An entertaining comic-book anthology developed from some of best authors and artists all around the world and set in their respective countries.

There are some real gems here and I'm probably going to visit the Ianus original drawings exhibit here in Rome as soon as possible.

Sadly a few of the stories included were just not my cup of tea, but that's more a matter of personal taste than anything else.

Happy Batman Day!

The World is an anthology book of Batman short stories set in multiple countries, written/drawn by creators from those countries. And it’s pretty terrible!

Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo kick things off in ‘murica with Bruce giving a weird love soliloquy to Gotham City that he personifies as a woman/lover - ugh! Bermejo’s splash pages are excellent though.

Then we’re off around the world for what basically amounts to two kinds of story: one where Batman punches a bad guy and one which is a mash note to the character. Paco Roca is the one creator who broke that trend by producing a story of Bruce getting some R&R in Spain. Granted, the creators don’t have that many pages to work with but none of these stories were at all interesting.

I learned that there’s a city/province/river in Turkey called Batman. So that’s… something. I was thoroughly bored by this series of instantly forgettable Batman shorts - not a single standout worth reading!

A Batman anthology from 14 different creative teams around the world. Each story takes place in the same country as its creators.

Global City (United States) by Brian Azzarello & Lee Bermejo - ★★★
Batman talks about his love of Gotham as if its his mistress. Bermejo's art is the star.

Paris (France) by Matthieu Gabella & Thierry Martin - ★★★
Batman chases Catwoman around the Louvre but Catwoman has an ulterior motive. Martin's art is very cartoonish and lumpy with some Manga influences.

Closed for the Holidays (Spain) by Paco Roca - ★★
Schlubby Bruce Wayne goes on vacation and develops a belly. Not great.

Ianus (Italy) by Alessandro Bilotta & Nicola Mari - ★★
A confusing story with Batman fighting a villain based on the God Janus in Rome.

A Better Tomorrow (Germany) by Benjamin Von Eckartsberg & Thomas Von Kummant - ★★★
The Joker empowers some ecoterrorists before Batman shows up to save the day.

Red Mass (Czech Republic) by Stepan Kopriva & Michal Suchanek - ★★
Batman fights a psychic during the Cold War. Kind of odd but good art.

My Bat-Man (Russia) by Kirill Kutuzov, Egor Protov & Natalia Zaidova - ★★★
A young Russian boy is given a Batman pen from his grandfather who then makes up stories about what Batman does with his friends. As he becomes older, he's influenced by the articles the Russian government releases about the Evil Empire of America. The story was a clever take on Batman.

The Cradle (Turkey) by Ertan Ergil & Ethem Onur Bilgic - ★★★
A nifty story about a secret organization Batman is tracking down across Turkey.

Defender of the City (Poland) by Tomasz Kolodziejczak & Piotr Kowalski - ★★★
Batman notices Warsaw is being protected by an Oracle type and heads there to bring her into the fold.

Funeral (Mexico) by Alberto Chimal & Rulo Valdez - ★★★
Batman sees La Atormentada, the ghost of a murdered woman and finds justice for her.

Where Are the Heroes? (Brazil) by Carlos Estefan & Pedro Mauro - ★★
Batman investigates the corruption in Brazil. There's not much of a story here, it's more of a plea for help from Brazilians to help get rid of corruption.

Muninn (South Korea) by Inpyo Jeon, Jaekwang Park & Junggi Kim - ★★
A weak story about some software that reads memories.

Batman and Panda Girl (China) by Xu Xiaodong, Lu Xiaotong & Qiu Kun - ★★
Batman helps save some businesses after Wayne Enterprises buys up all the real estate. Some of this didn't make much sense.

Batman Unchained (Japan) by Okadaya Yuichi - ★★
The Batman of Edo era Japan inspires an artist to draw newspapers about him. The cops try to shut him down because the Batman stories show him doing the cops' job of catching criminals. It's pretty poorly written.

Another great collection of shirt Batman stories. Different teams of writers send artists all with their own take on Batman. I am really glad (as the title suggests) about the international flavour to the Batman stories. It is interesting for me to see how people from different cultures and parts of the world see Batman and also what makes a hero.

I don't think I read a vad story in the whole book, and I did enjoy seeing other sides to Batman and other characters especially Batman and Catwoman in Paris. A great introduction story of Batman's warning to the world, though it is that art work that makes that one really special for me. There are many more great stories even a vacation story and the book finishes strong with a Batman Ninja/manga style short story.

I have been very lucky with the last few collection of short stories I have read as I have enjoyed them all. Every story starts with a introduction to the writer and artist and finishes with the issue cover. Great to see different prospective on a great and complex character.

Batman'in uluslararası piyasada ilk defa Türkiye'de maceraya atılması müthiş.

It's a good idea, but is it a good piece of work?

It's nice to see Batman in different styles and cultures. Artists from each country tried to reflect the mood of their own country. But most stories feel inadequate and superficial. Of course, although the small number of pages affects this, I did not like some ideas very much.

But there are good works in them too. Despite the small number of pages, the story of Turkey tried to tell a more layered story and used the country's presentation and visuals very well. The story of Russia was different and sweet. Germany's story makes you feel the Joker effect. It's also nice to see Batman in a manga-style Japanese story.

I don't know if Batman world is a good antology or a marketing strategy, but it's a good idea and experiment.

This anthology, as is usual, is pretty uneven but definitely features some stunning art and stories throughout.

Some of the issues seem to have been co-written by the author's countries' Tourism Boards, but I guess that's what one gets in a globe-spanning initiative like this.

One of the better entries in the current overly-saturated Batman area of the comic scene.

This book takes the Batman Mythos around the world, showcasing Batman and his mythos in entries by a diverse group of artists and writers from around the world.

As expected with an anthology book this large (~200 pp), it could have potentially been a mixed bag, but happily that is not the case; almost every story is inherently intersting and readable (though I enjoyed some more than others) with artwork that complements each stories.

The best thing is the different art-styles they drew batman in, the worst thing… it got absolutely no story whatsoever. Every country have 20 pages or less to tell a story; that most of the time its not that interesting. I liked only 3 or 4 from a total of 14! Nice concept, nice art, nice “batman inner-monologue-ing” bits, but bad bad plots.

Not that there is anything to spoil here. Rancid in concept and rancid in execution. Yet another symptom of the current plight of modern comics. Seeking 'diversity for diversity's sake, at the expense of any and everything of interest to the reader. Sorry, but I couldn't care less about a Chinese creative team doing a Batman story set in China, or a Mexican team, or 'insert country here'. I care about great batman stories, (unlike DC). I don't care if the artist is from Mongolia, Iceland or Timbuk- fucking-tu. I just want good stories. And this book doesn't have them. There are over a dozen here. I started all of them and finished two. Nothing here is exemplary. A couple are good, Most are awful. But hey, someone in DC editorial got to break their arm patting themselves on the back. I guess it was all worth it, then. 2/5

For over eighty years of the character’s existence, Batman has been through multiple interpretations more so than any other super superhero. Everyone from all corners of the world has their own Batman story, including a Japanese manga that was published in the late 1960s, so DC has decided to publish this hardcover anthology that features stories from the Dark Knight’s past and present told by creative teams from across the globe and taking place in their home countries.

As always in the tradition of anthology books, the collection of stories is a mixed bad, as evident from its opening American story “Global City” by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo. Apart from Bermejo’s stunning art, which is done through lavishly painted splash pages, Azzarello’s writing is awkward with Batman narrating the story and describing Gotham as his wife, which I wouldn’t think of him that way. Honestly, Batman sounds more like Frank Miller’s The Spirit, in that he sounds like a jerk who can’t commit to a serious relationship.

A lot of the storytelling in these shorts isn’t the most compelling (apart from one that I’ll come to) and feels more like an exercise for these global artists, each with their style that is uncommon in American superhero comics. And yet, there are a few cases where you can the influence of those American Batman comics in some of the various art-styles, such as the cover of the French story resembling one of David Mazzuchelli’s covers from Batman: Year One. The Turkish story “The Cradle” by Ertan Ergil and Ethem Onur Bilgiç is a tribute to Scott Snyder’s work throughout the numerous Bat-titles, evoking the Court of Owls, whilst the artwork evokes the style of Jock.

One story stands out above all the rest the Russian one, “My Bat-Man” written by Kirill Kutozov and Egor Prutov, and drawn by Natalia Zaidova. It centres on a Russian boy who received a memento from his grandfather, in the shape of a Batman-themed pen. As an aspiring artist, we see this kid grow up using the Bat-Man as inspiration for his illustrations, whilst learning more about the light and dark of this character being a cultural figure and an actual vigilante living among us. It’s a meta narrative that discusses how Batman has been interpreted over the decades, particularly how darker he’s gotten and is still worthy of being a hero for children. Ending on a very hopeful note, “My Bat-Man” reminds you why Batman can be everyone.

Like I said before, this anthology is a mixed bag and only a handful of stories (especially “My Bat-Man”) are enough to show a variety of different Batman stories that are worth checking out.

Batman: The World is a collection of fourteen comic vignettes that celebrates Batman Day. This anthology collects fourteen vignettes written and illustrated by a myriad of writers and pencillers from around the world, which is centered on the Dark Knight as Batman has become a world phenomenon. Since today (18 September 2021) is Batman Day, I thought it would be apropos to read this book.

This anthology is divided into fourteen vignettes of Batman in a specific city in a different country of the world: North America, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Turkey, Poland, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, China, and Japan featuring writers and pencilers from those regions of the world.

Global City (★★★☆☆) takes place in Gotham City and is written by Brian Azzarello and penciled by Lee Bermejo. It kicks off the anthology by revisiting the origin story of Batman and how he views Gotham City as his wife. However, lately he feels conflicted as crimes started in Gotham City has spread throughout the world, which he feels responsible for.

Paris (★★★☆☆) takes place in Paris, France and is written by Mathieu Gabella and penciled by Thierry Martin. It has Bruce Wayne as Batman trying to prevent Selina Kyle as Catwoman from stealing something from the Louvre Museum, but when Wonder Woman shows up, Catwoman’s real plan comes is revealed.

Closed for the Holidays (★★☆☆☆) takes place in Spain and is written and penciled by Paco Roca. It has Bruce Wayne taking a holiday away from Gotham City and Batman and is mainly narrated by Alfred Pennyworth.

Ianus (★★★☆☆) takes place in Rome, Italy and is written by Alessandro Bilotta and penciled by Nicola Mari. It has the Italian authorities contacting Batman to capture a villain by the name of Ianus, who as a child, could have shared a similar origin story to Bruce Wayne, but he managed to save his mother, but not his father, which created his alter ego of Ianus.

A Better Tomorrow (★★★☆☆) takes place in the Bavarian Alps region of Germany and is written by Benjamin von Eckartsberg and penciled by Thomas von Kummant. It has Bruce Wayne as Batman tracking The Joker, who is trying to convince a couple of environmentalist to turn into eco-terrorist by killing a President of a corporation who is polluting the Earth.

Red Mass (★★★☆☆) takes place in Prague, the Czech Republic and is written by Štěpán Kopřiva and penciled by Michal Suchánek. It takes place in the eighties during the height of the Cold War, which has Bruce Wayne as Batman tracking down Kim Koval – a psychic that has escape from Arkham Asylum to the Czech Republic.

My Bat-Man (★★★☆☆) takes place in Russia and is written by Kirill Kutuzov and Egor Prutov and penciled by Natalia Zaidova. It has an unnamed Russian artist who took the name of Mr. Brick, who was inspired by Batman all his life and draws him from the news and rumors that escaped America to Russia.

The Cradle (★★★☆☆) takes place in Ankara, Sivas, and Istanbul, Turkey and is written by Ertan Ergil and penciled by Ethem Onur Bilgiç. It has Bruce Wayne as Batman following a trail of clues, which leads him from Gotham City to various cities in Turkey to discover that there is an ancient group known as Court of Eagles, who is the European counterpart to the Court of Owls.

Defender of the City (★★★☆☆) takes place in Warsaw, Poland and is written by Tomasz Kołodziejczak and penciled by Piotr Kowalski. It has Bruce Wayne investing Warsaw Tech, a company led by Anna Wadowska that Wayne Enterprises would like to be partnered with as their security systems has made the crime rate of Warsaw lower than a city of their size.

Funeral (★★★☆☆) takes place in Mexico City, Mexico and is written by Alberto Chimal and penciled by Rulo Valdés. It has Bruce Wayne in Mexico City on a business trip as he witnesses a spectra of La Atormentada – the ghost of a woman whose being attack and pleads for help, but she can never be reached – Bruce Wayne as Batman tries.

Where are the Heroes? (★★★☆☆) takes place in Brazil and is written by Carlos Estefan and penciled by Pedro Mauro. It has Bruce Wayne investigating some investments that Wayne Industries had made in Brazil only to find that his money is being wasted and he wants to know the cause of the drain of his money.

Muninn (★★★☆☆) takes place in Seoul, South Korea and is written by Inpyo Jeon and penciled by Jaekwang Park and Junggi Kim. It has Bruce Wayne as Batman visiting Waynetech Korea to help a Doctor Min, clear her brother's good name, who killed himself in Gotham City after allegedly killing his wife and the main suspect is Saba.

Batman and Panda Girl (★★★★☆) takes place in China and is written by Xu Xiaodong and Lu Xiaotong and penciled by Qiu Kun. It has Bruce Wayne visiting China on vacation, only to hear that his company has bought up the land of the humble community to turn it to the next mega-city. However, an optimistic waitress disguised as Robin and Batman stop the strongmen his company has hired to evacuate their family businesses.

Batman Unchained (★★☆☆☆) takes place in Japan and is written and penciled by Okadaya Yuichi. It takes place in Edo era Japan, where the police are persecuting writers and artists about reporting on Batman and the police doesn't like that a vigilante is taking their glory as they try to silence off the artist drawing Batman in the reports.

All in all, Batman: The World is a mediocre collection of vignettes that celebrates Batman in all his glory and his influence around the world.

Batman: The World is an original DC Comics graphic novel composed of short stories written and drawn by 14 international creative teams where each team composes a story that takes place in their home country.

I love the concept of this book but I believe it was hampered by the short story format. There were some fun stories in here (I personally loved the stories set in France and Germany) but I wish there were some longer tales in here because some of the stories felt so rushed they became confusing. I would love to see a sequel where each story was as long as traditional comic issue. And I think it would have been a really cool experiment to try to tell one cohesive story with Batman travelling the world with the creative team tackling their home country. I also think would be a really cool format to explore for Superman and Wonder Woman.

I really like this idea of a Batman anthology with stories from different people around the world. You get to see different art styles, and my favorite was in the first story. No ground-shaking events, but fun stuff, like the story where a kid looks up to Batman and draws him, and then he grows up and sees that he got the overall idea of Batman right.

Batman fighting crime all over the world and local artists from the countries he visits giving their personal and local twists on the Cape Crusader sounded quite exciting on paper, but the overall feeling is disappointment at so many unfilfilled possibilities. Although this anthology has plenty of visual merits (particularly when the illustrators move away from the stereotypical mainstream American superhero style and embrace a style closer to home, so to speak), the stories themselves are way too short and there's a lack of character development, while the way several of the cities are portrayed is way too close to a tourism brochure (with the notable exception of Paris... no Eiffel Tower in sight, for once in pop culture).

Many other reviewers have taken a episode-per-episode look at this anthology and I agree with most of what they have said, so I will only focus on the one that actually justify purchashing this book (and even awarding it a five-stars rating). Visual-wise, "Closed for the Holidays" (Spain) and "Munnin" (South Korea) are outstanding and draw you on immediately into their worlds, even if the stories are not that amazing. The former looks at how Bruce Wayne would struggle with a laid-back vacation and the latter includes one of the most dynamic two-pages fight scene I have seen in ages (and which could only be realized in the printed medium). "A Better Tomorrow" takes a deep look at the straightforward-not-quite-straightforward Batman-Joker duality and imagines how it would function beyond Gotham and actually manages to be unsettling and cerebral. However, my favorite episode was "My Bat-Man" (Russia), a very unique and heart-warming look at how the influence and image of Batman, the American pop icon, has spread across the world and even beyond ideological barriers. It even makes a tongue-in-cheek critique at the dark, intense, brooding Batman of today.

Anyway, I 'm glad I manage to get hold of this anthology at half-price and will gladly share it with friends, so they can enjoy the handful of remarkable stories that make this anthology a keeper.

Z hlediska DC skvělý marketingový tah a sourcing talentů.

b) rveme do komiksu co nejvíc našeho města a památek, do toho tam něco dělá Batman

Čekal jsem krapet odvážnější sborník.
