Fae marry for love. Angels marry for politics.

Véa has dreamed of becoming queen of the Fae since she was a girl. But once she finally takes her throne, and her world is under attack by ruthless soul eaters, she's forced to watch it burn or marry a man she hates—Lux, king of Angels.

Nix is the half Elvan, half Angel bastard prince of both the Elvan nation and the land of the Angels. When he takes his place as hand of the king beneath his brother, it becomes his duty to guard the new queen, Véa.

Will Véa assimilate into a world where women are traded like cattle, or will she steal Lux's world out from under him with his brother at her side?

If you liked Game of Thrones and From Blood and Ash, you'll love the sexy, magical world of Origins of the Gods.

Intended only for mature audiences.

◆This series can be read on its own but is a distant prequel series to the urban fantasy Eluding Destiny series. (As in, thousands of years in the past.)◆

I received an arc of this book from the author for an honest review. Please check content and trigger warnings for this book. Which are available on the authors website.

I really enjoyed this book and I'm excited to see where the story continues in book 2. I was pleasantly surprised by my inability to put the book down, especially with some of the darker themes. I was so emotionally invested in the characters and everything they were going through I had to finish it in one sitting.

This story follows our two main characters. Vea and Nix. It has multiple pov's from several different characters, but mainly between these two. Vea is a powerful fae queen that has the ability to grant eternal life to her people. Nix is a bastard prince who is half-elven and angel who is the hand of the king. Vea has to marry Lux, who is Nix's brother, to save her people.

Can I just say I want to punch Lux in the face. Out of every villainous character in the book, I hated him the most. I cared so deeply for Vea and everything she was going through. I couldn't put the book down because I just needed to know she was going to be okay. She is such a strong and loving character it was hard to read everything she was going through. Even in that darkness, we see her strength and the love and light of the people around her including Nix.

I did find, at points, and especially in the beginning. The dialogue and sometimes descriptions were stilted. Which unfortunately would cause me to pull out of the story. It made sense at the beginning just because the main characters start as children. I'm not expecting the thoughts of an 8-year-old to be adult-like. However, it did continue to happen throughout the story. But it wasn't enough to really keep me from enjoying it. I did enjoy the pacing and the character development throughout the story.

What`s just happened?!

This book terrified me.

I felt like being trapped in a nightmare all the way (it did not help that I read it at night-the entire night, might I ad) while being too engrossed and fascinated by the horror of it all to be able to fully wake up screaming. I did not sleep last night, but I had my dream/nightmare, all right.

I feel like I was trapped in some kind of snare with this book. It looked innocent enough when I first saw it. I picked it thinking it will be a fluff read, just enough to help me fall asleep.

But it started with an entire childhood sequence that lasted a quarter of the book! It had lots of folklore and creatures to present and each with their kingdom/queendoms and their heirs/queens/kings. It was an entire thing!

I can best describe this as a combo between a 90s fantasy [ like [book:Daughter of the Blood|47956], The Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop, Archangel, Samaria series by Sharon Shinnor Kushiel's Dart, Phedre`s Trilogy by by Jacqueline Carey] and the latest trends in adult/mature fantasy.

WHAT DO I MEAN by 90s fantasy?

-there is a lot of back story to the characters (some of it can become really boring, as just a tiny fraction is relevant to the plotline)

-the heroine has enormous powers super unique just to herself and she is special and coveted by many and at the same time feared for them

-the heroine has a lot of sexual freedom. What do I mean by that? She is not restricted to just one main love interest (until the actual main love interest makes his appearance), she is free to explore her sexuality with whomever she wishes and with how many she wants

-there is always a war to wage, something to be found, something lost, someone in danger, and somehow all that is background noise for what is happening with the protagonists` arch.

-the main love interest`s perspective (usually a he) is very present and amorphous (almost as if he is omniscient in regards to everything, except her)

-but the word that best describes this type of book is: “heftiness”. They are really big. I saw that this one was 900 pages only now, as I am writing this review, after I finished the book. But they are big not only in pages but in details and in describing the world of the book.

I have been avoiding these types of books (fantasy from the 90s) because I have to give a lot of emotional fuel on my part. I feel like I have to get really invested in what`s happening and when I finish it, then I am left gapping, struggling to piece myself back together.

They have a sweet-sour combo that I haven`t seen in the contemporaneous books, until now.

This book felt like reading a 90s fantasy but with the added benefit of being a bit more expedient (not by much) and being a bit more honed for a 2020+ audience, used with some tropes (the love interest is very powerful, but he is sweet and caring, not insisting in asserting his dominance; there is not that much spent on describing each individual`s powers; the interest falls more on the characters` development than the plot itself.)

“Because he was my best friend. He was the smile when I didn’t have one, and the laugh when I needed to hear one, and the fun in life I craved as much as I craved blood in my body.”

Why am I saying that this book was MY NIGHTMARE?

For this part I Have to draw the spoiler curtains.

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A MONARCHY

It also occurred to me that this book was an excellent example of why one should do away with monarchy, even in fantasy.

The majority of fantasy books tilt towards showcasing the benefits of being royal. This one goes straight into its woes.

Build a social program and instaurate a half-functioning government, for goodness`s sake! Why sacrifice your lives in the name of a "people" that are ending up poor regardless of your royal piety? (because the system is in such a way built for a handful to funnel all the wealth).

“I’m sorry, Nix,” she said. “I really do wish we lived different lives. But in this one, we must do what we have to in order to survive.”

this, coming from the all-powerful Queen

But, boy/girl/NB, I gobbled this book down in no time. It took me four to five hours in one sitting to finish it all and not to add, that I have already started book two, so keep me luck. My heart already cries for me to stop.

Whaaaaat? I thought this was a standalone, I mean it has 900 fucking pages and it still didn't give me a proper ending? This book made me suffer enough while reading, and now I'll have to suffer until there is more?
Painful.

Wow I’m utterly floored by how amazing this was. I cried, felt pain, joy, anger and heartache all thanks to Charlie Nottinghams amazing writing.
This can easily be read stand alone but if you have been following the amazing Eluding Destiny series you will know of these characters already.
This is Epic High Fantasy Romance at its absolute best.
Two worlds so vastly different. The beautiful Morduaine where the Fae live and life is beautiful, where all people live a free and happy life. Kind queens rule and nobody goes hungry in fact the hungry eat first even before the royals. The climate is warm like all it’s people.
Then there Matriaza where the climate is ice cold just like the rulers. Females are nothing more than property even the noble women are mocked. If you have had sex before marriage you are a whore. Poverty and slavery including sex slavery no mater the age is as acceptable. Fathers sell their daughters to despicable men who are allowed to cheat and abuse yet if their wife/property seeks comfort elsewhere the men have the right to kill.
Vea queen of Morduaine has no option but to accept a marriage proposal (haha proposal is the wrong term here) from Lux king of Matriaza. Her world is under attack and his people have access to magic that will save her world. He is obsessed with her and would happily let her people and his own people die just to own her. Vea is the only person who has the power to grant eternal life to the worthy and he is addicted to power.
Vea is a fighter with powerful magic, but she also has the kindest heart and loves all life. Maybe she can make a difference and change how life is on her new husbands world.
This epic story was so emotional. The tears were often as was the pain in my chest from what Vea has to endure. The injustice is painful and you will feel it all in your soul. She is determined to make a difference but her status is nothing more than the whore queen who people are allowed to openly mock. The feels you will experience reading this are insane! She is faced with political battles and physical battles but she is no meek girl. She is fierce and independent.
The shining light is Nix who is the kings brother and you will love him. I fell head over heals for him as the story progressed.
At its core this is a romance and it’s beautifully written. Even in the darkest of times there is happiness. The journey is absolutely stunning and will make your heart beat. The spice factor is right up there and the chemistry is hot as hell.
Could not recommend this more if you love spicy high fantasy romance with an alpha female. Absolutely top marks on this and wish I could give more 5/5

I adore mythology type stories but this was truly something that surpassed all of them. It begins on the battlefield. We have an angel, a fae and a elf but it doesn't stop there. Cue an arranged marriage. A cruel husband and a woman who desperately wants to save her people.

Warning this contains miscarriage, brutal death and moments of torture and abuse but still an amazing read. Ps I hate Lux. 😒

This book made me feel so many feelings. Made me skip times of studying because I couldn't put it down. Had me thinking about it when I had a concussion and could not read. Had me reading while on breaks at work and while spending time with family. Had me reading through the night skipping sleep I desperately needed because it's just that good.

This book was provided to me free of charge by the author but my opinions are my own.

The world of the fea is in danger and the only way to save it is an arranged marriage between Véa (queen of the fea) and Lux (King of the angels)

The angles are safe from the Maalaichte cnihme on Matriaza but that's about it. Corruption rules the world and women are nothing but property. Véa is willing to do anything to same Morduaine and that includes marriage to a monster.

She's miserable, alienated and her only friend on this new world is her guard Nix, Lux's half brother who also happens to be half fea. Their interactions have warmed even my cold heart. I'm living for them.

The author did a fantastic job building a world two really, the characters are amazing and well written. I went through all the emotions reading this:
Anger ✅
Grief✅
Giddy squeals of laughter✅
Crying for a fictional animal✅

And after almost 600 pages I know one thing Lux must die.

I was not certain about this book, I was afraid of missing Laila and Jeremy, but I absolutely loved it. The new worlds are great, the descriptions are rich and efficient. I love Nix and Véa as much a Laila and Jeremy. Again great book. It explains a lot of the question about the origins of the characters. Not to mention, we finally get to get to know Lux. I think the measure of a great author is how well written the villain is, and by that measure Charlie certainly proves once again that she is a great author.

Somewhere between 2* and 4*… And it’s officially my last. fantasy booktok rec.
The main characters? Wonderful, from all perspective. The world? Ok. The worldbuiding and action… were not horrible but there was something off. What made them fae/angels/elves? Nothing of notice. Why were separate planets mentioned? Not sure. The intergalactic threat and massacre? Never led anywhere, they were just triggers for the treaty.
This book could have used some heavy editing and it would have been a soldi 5*

This book was really rough to get into. It definitely was worth it once I got into it, but the time jumps and lack of exposition in the beginning had me considering DNFing. I am SO glad that I pushed on, however, so if you are in my position, I would say to try to keep going; once it picks up speed, I could not put it down. I definitely stayed for the characters; some of the worldbuilding was confusing and not nearly explained enough for my liking. It took me almost half of the book to realize they were from completely different planets, rather than neighboring continents on the same world.

Back to the beginning!

How can I adequately describe how excited I have been to finally get to the origin story of my favorite characters? This was everything I wanted and then some! I loved the slow build up of Vea and Nix’s relationship and seeing how they fell in love. And my hatred of Lux was confirmed a million times over. I knew he was evil but holy wow, he’s a true villain. This book was chonky and absolutely filled with the backstory I had been dying to read more of and I loved it so much!

Wow just terrible. Didn't make it past 30%.

I'm sorry I did try with this book, but got so utterly bored I just stopped. Not sure how others rated this book so highly. The world building was good don't get me wrong but at times you were left wondering what are anyone's power? As you go through the powers seem to change, also the amount of different paranormals change. Also slow burn romance we are talking turtle paced romance. So not the book for me.

I'm pretty sure this books could be read without reading the entire eluding destiny series but either way it's freaking perfection! So many questions answered that I didn't even know I needed answers to!! Nix and Vea are the ultimate star crossed lovers!

Overall this was a good book. There were some parts that read a little weird. The first 40% started to drag a bit with all the world building, but once the action started the book went fast.

I loved reading this. It was a little slow to start but then really picked up later on. Charlie has created a beautiful beginning to her MCs that provides more context behind the main Eluding Destiny series. I cannot wait to get into the next one

This series should be the next fantasy epic!!

Angels, fae, immortality, and war, OH MY! You know the magic system and world-building is on point when you are telling your not-bookish father about the book, and he goes “sounds very Tolkien”. YES!! The amount of detail about the people, their lands, and their magic is OFF THE CHARTS, and the love story had me laughing and crying along with the characters. This is by far one of my favorite reads of 2021.

The story starts out with a flashback to the past, showing a great mistake that sets events in motion for Véa and Nix—two children that are destined to grow up and sacrifice their own happiness for the good of their kingdoms. Forbidden love, old rivalries, prophecies, and ancient magic make this tale perfect for anyone who loves an epic story of destiny and power interwoven with a slow burn romance.

This book is also a long-distance prequel to another of Charlie’s series… and we know how satisfying it is to read interconnected stories!!

If you’ve read From Blood and Ash, Lord of the Rings, or A Court of Thorns and Roses, you should give this a shot. I have no regrets except that I can’t force all of Booktok to read this :)

Cannot wait for the sequel in January—counting down the days since that cliffhanger at the end!!

Tropes you’ll love:
- Fated mates
- Forbidden love
- Do not touch her!

I'm SO glad I read this after Blank Slate (Eluding Destiny book 14) because I spent so much of this book with my jaw open and eyes wide because SO MANY THINGS SUDDENLY MAKE SENSE.

Also there are sky puppies in this. I love them.

I hate Lux though, I have never wanted to knee a fictional character in the groin so much.
5\5 stars. I'm 100% a Charlie-verse fan. And I already have the next book downloaded and ready to go.

The world building is impeccable and I don’t think I have seen better in any book.  The female main character is strong and fierce while being kind.  My 2 mini complaints are the book is very long and there is repetitive phrasing.  I would encourage anyone to read this book. Side note: there is an organizational chart in the back that explains who each character is.
