Ingrid Seymour has brought us back to the Sunderverse, first, there was Toni Sunder in the Mate Tracker series, now Lucia Sunder (Toni's little sis) stars in the Demon Hunter series and now we have Jazmin Bronte in the Wild Packs series. All three series are set in the same world but feel very different. Howl of the Rejected was one rollercoaster ride of crazy, excitement and was totally intriguing, I loved it.
Jaz lives in a place called Lux City and goes to the Lux Academy where they train to fight wildlings. Wildlings are supernaturals, witches, werewolves, vampires, and the like. The city is very off the beaten path, they aren't like the rest of the world who view Skews (supernaturals) and Stales (non-magicals) as equal and co-mingle. This society is very toxic, they view skews as unnatural beings that shouldn't exist, and the Academy is what's perpetuating those ideas. The school gives off cult vibes, raising orphans to think one way, shaping their world to be so closed off and narrow-minded.
The Academy is made up of orphans and Jaz, being one of those orphans, grew up with those twisted ideas but after she finds herself separated from the school, she realizes the lies she was being told and started to change her way of thinking. Not gonna it takes some time she keeps reverting back to the things that the Academy told her, it's hard to break the habit. What's most frustrating is that while Jaz knows the school was lying she still believes some of the things they told her about wildings even when she sees differently.
After a very traumatic event, Jaz stumbles across a pack and they aren't what I expected. They are nothing like the other packs I've seen in this world, they don't have homes they are wild (at least compared to the others) and use magic more than I thought they would. The Chieftess is more than a little complex and I can't get a read on her but I know that I don't fully trust her.
Things between the wildings and Jaz aren't great, the Chieftess is up to something, things are being kept from her and a good chunk of the pack are giving glares and calling her "city rat". So Jaz's rudeness isn't all on her but after learning things, the history of the Academy, and the pack she is starting to understand things a little more. Jaz has been taught one way but is determined to change, to learn the truth for herself, and is determined to survive. She has a lot of growth to do and I think she will do just that by continuing to learn the truth about things and making decisions for herself, she's already started changing.
I loved that the way the packs are in this book was different than what I'm used to. There's the pack then there's the triad who are some powerful alphas in the pack and serve as a little pack on their own. They have powers, can share power, and communicate very easily but triads need a female alpha to lead them, this bit makes the story very interesting. This packs triad is made up of Kall, Novuk, and Maki. All are gorgeous, Novuk is nice, Maki is kinda a jerk and Kall is interesting. One thing is for sure something is most definitely going on with them and Jaz no matter how much she wants to deny it. Too bad this isn't a reverse harem, I feel like it's a missed opportunity. A small pack of all alphas and the top alpha is a female while the other alphas are her mates, it would've been good. If Seymour ever decides to write a reverse harem version of this book I would read it.
The story is mind-blowing, Seymour has written a storyline that was so unexpected yet intriguing, with plot twist after plot twist that has me wondering what was gonna happen next. I've never read a story about a cult, seeing them in action was crazy. How they justified their actions by blaming people and going along with tradition. The lengths they were willing to go to and may go to still. It seems very hard to break the control they have over the others and I wonder how all that is gonna work out.
Howl of the Rejected had betrayal, a character's entire belief system being upended in the most devastating way was intriguing. Murder, blackmail, threats and so much more. I have so many questions about the academy, about this pack and Jaz's place in them. I'm most definitely will be continuing this series.
