The Path to Peace: Experiencing God's Comfort When You're Overwhelmed

Rate this book
Overwhelmed. Stressed out. Burnt out. Fried.

However we name it, all of us know what it feels like to deal with circumstances and worries that drag us down and wear us out. Many of us experience persistent anxiety. Peace can be hard to find.

But it is in the middle of our stress and fear that God extends his unshakable peace to us.

In this beautiful book that is part devotional and part Bible study, Ann Swindell shares how the biblical stories of eight women and men helped her realize that what she needed most in her own journey wasn't a stable job or healthy kids or good friends--it was God's peace. Through forty faith-stirring readings, Ann will help you:

· Experience God's peace in your daily life
· Respond to challenges with faith rather than fear
· Find hope in God's goodness and faithfulness toward you

The good news is that even if our situations don't change, we can still experience Christ's peace in our daily lives. The Path to Peace is for everyone who longs to experience a soul at rest.

One of my goals this year has been to read a devotional every month. I’ve specifically been looking to read books that point my heart to Christ more and stir my affections towards worship. The last few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of The Path to Peace by Ann Swindell in exchange for my honest review and it’s one of my favorite devotionals I’ve read so far.

In TPTP, Ann weaves together her personal experiences with biblical narratives to point to how you can find peace in Christ no matter what your circumstances are. Ann walks through the stories of Sarah (and Abraham), Moses, Ruth, Hannah, Mary (mother of Jesus), the disciples, Mary Magdalene, and Paul. She shows how we can learn from their every day life experiences (and some not so every day life experiences) and how God is faithful in these situations. From trusting God through financial hardship to relying on him through difficult relationships to rooting yourself in him while he transforms your identity, so much of life is covered in this book in such a way to make God’s name great and give comfort to those dealing with anxiety and emotional turmoil.

One thing I appreciated about this book is that Ann doesn’t make the mistake of glorifying biblical figures, but instead uses their stories as the backdrop of God’s trustworthiness and faithfulness in equipping both those in the Bible and us today. Each person addressed is someone that is a painfully normal human, but they are still an instrument in the hands of mercy. Each situation discussed is met with the comfort of the gospel. A good example of this is of 143, which talks about Ruth’s financial needs, but also shows her spiritual needs:

“All of us will face seasons of being in need, financially or otherwise. But far past our need for practical provision, we must all come face-to-face with our truest reality of being a people desperately in need of God’s grace.

Ruth needed God’s grace as she went to glean. Our family needed his grace with our medical bills. And all of us need God’s grace today and for eternity; none of us can make our own way into heaven. We need the favor of God through the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ in order to attain the miraculous gift of salvation and eternal life in him!”

In TPTP, Ann meets you in the depths of despair and challenges of life, she sees you, and encourages you with the truth and power of the gospel. The devotions are approachable and not overly long or cumbersome, which makes it great for individual study or a group study. This book is great for new believers and those more mature in the faith. If you enjoy reading Simonetta Carr, Melissa Krueger, or Hannah Anderson, you will love Ann’s writing style.

Ann connects our everyday struggle with accepting Christ's gift of peace with the struggles of the heroes and heroines of the faith we see in the Bible. This isn't another self-help book about being happy, but a real biblically-based guide to living out the peace of Christ.

From the first paragraph of the introduction, Ann Swindell had already drawn me in and I could hardly wait to jump into The Path to Peace. Part Bible study, part devotional, this timely book is exactly what I needed and what every woman I've had a heart-level conversation with over the past two years has needed: a deep breath along with a gentle reminder to move our gaze upward, off of daily circumstances on onto the God who is not rattled by today's news or tomorrow's unknowns. Thank you, Ann, for the gift of truth, confidence and PEACE in a world where we desperately need it.

The Path to Peace, by Ann Swindell, is an inspiring, helpful, relevant book that is easy to read, with short, daily chapters and applicable life lessons drawing the reader into the peace of Christ.

Each section focuses on a different person in the Bible, and each chapter centers on a particular theme. Ann shares the Biblical perspective in a personal way, bringing the story to life, and then shares a parallel personal experience. She ends each section with a reflection section giving the reader something to consider. The Biblical figures are clearly human and flawed, but also live lives that point to the power, presence and peace that Christ provides in a variety of areas.

This devotional is biblically sound, practical, interesting and encouraging. It’s also a lovely book in physical form and would make a wonderful keepsake, or gift for others. I look forward to more from this author.

Ann's first book, Still Waiting, has been a tremendous encouragement to me, so I was thrilled when I heard about her latest offering, The Path to Peace. Spanning everything from difficult relationships and financial struggles to personal loss and unmet longings, Ann's new book speaks into the desire we all have for a peace which will transcend the wounds of our broken world.

In Ann's characteristically approachable style, The Path to Peace is a beautiful blend of Biblical retellings, personal memoir, and Bible study/devotional. In each day's reading, Ann points readers to a passage from Scripture, offers a creative retelling of the event in question, shares authentically about her own struggles and suffering, and ultimately points readers back to the only true source of lasting peace: Jesus Christ.

The Path to Peace doesn't shy away from suffering and hardship, nor does Ann offer sugarcoated answers or easy solutions. Instead, she reminds us—gently, compassionately, and powerfully—that nothing satisfies our hearts like God. A lovely and timely read for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed (which, I imagine, includes most of us these days ;D).

This easy-to-read devotional is sure to encourage and uplift anyone who reads it- especially those who feel anxious, overwhelmed, and crave peace in their life. Ann Swindell combines scripture, Bible stories, and pieces of her own story in daily readings that prompt readers to explore how God faithfully provides peace in the midst of difficult situations. Over and over again, I find myself nodding along - feeling both seen and thoughtfully challenged to press deeper into the Lord who offers peace.

This would be a good gift for anyone. The readings are short, sweet, and full of life giving encouragement.

Devotional-style, Ann writes beautiful narratives of pivotal people in Scripture and encourages readers to find inner peace in God, even amid outer turmoil. I confess, I enjoyed most when she wrote memoir-style about her own life

I enjoy reading devotionals, if they are done well and solid biblically. I enjoy reading short chapters that are meaty, give me something to ponder on. There are not that many new ones out there that have been published recently that I would recommend, there few and far between. However, this new devotional The Path to Peach ~ Experiencing God’s Comfort When You’re Overwhelmed by Ann Swindell, was recently published and is one I would recommend!! So, if you are dealing with sadness, anger, disappointment, and/or overwhelm, this is one to pick up. The author does share that what we truly need is to read our Bibles most. I am thankful she the pointed that truth out. Sure we can read about the Bible, but we need to actually be reading the Bible to get the most out of knowing who God is and what faith as a Christian is all about.

The devotional is set up for 40-days, broken down into eight sections, however you don’t necessarily need to read it in order, but by section based on the topic if you prefer. Each reading gives you the Scripture to read for the devotional she shares, which is her providing a summary, what we can learn from it, and some of her personal experience that she has gone through that is very relatable. The Bible stories are featured around Sarah, Ruth, Noah, Abraham, Hannah, Mary, and Paul. Saints who had trouble, fears, trials, tribulations, etc… similar to us today. You will see these saints knew whom they should turn to for peace and comfort, where to find contentment/rest, even in circumstances that seemed impossible. Of course, not always perfectly! At the end of each reading is a question to help you reflect upon the reading to act upon what the Word says. Which is what we need to do, not just read it, but apply it!

Here are a few of my highlights:

-Difficulties are everywhere. Trials abound. This life, as Jesus promised, has trouble…but Jesus also gives this beautiful assurance: Take heart; I have overcome the world, from John 16:33

-Throughout the Bible you find God offered healing and wholeness, hope, and peace, at just the right time.

-We can choose our response to the life we have been given. By loving God’s Word and obeying Him, we can experience His peace, regardless of the circumstances. Easy? Hardly.

-The worst that can happen here on earth will be redeemed in and through Christ.

-The longings that we feel here on earth for things to be well and right and good are longings that will never be fully met in our days on this soil. Why? Because what we are truly longing for is heaven. We long for unity with Christ himself.

This devotional points to where peace is found! A great and encouraging truth that we all need reminding of!

Ann Swindell has written the most unique and intriguing devotional I have ever had the pleasure of reading! She begins the with a sort of Christian fiction portrayal of the emotions and communication of the biblical character and then she seamlessly transitions into her own life stories of God's continual faithfulness. Ann continually challenges your heart attitude, while giving you a hug of empathy, as she gently expresses her own humanity and God's unwavering grace. I was so pleasantly surprised by this devotional. I think that this is perfect for women in all stages of faith. The fictionalized verses at the beginging opens up the heart of the biblical character in a way that makes the verses come alive to someone who maybe struggles in the Word, or is not a Christian yet. It has a soft rawness to it that allows truths to sink in and absorb before you realize it because you're caught up in her life story, but God is there all along.

Have you felt overwhelmed over the past few years? In The Path to Peace, Ann Swindell guides us to experiencing God’s comfort when we’re overwhelmed.

Spiritual Strength

At 250 pages, this devotional book is a treasure trove of spiritual strength. Swindelll is a gifted writer, and she weaves Biblical stories with her own testimony to speak of God’s goodness and faithfulness.

By looking at the lives of Sarah, Moses, Ruth, Hannah, Mary, the disciples, Mary Magdalene, and Paul, you’ll experience a roller-coaster of emotions while finding stability and comfort in Jesus. You’ll learn their stories better and see where you’ve been missing out on God’s blessings and presence.

Open and Honest

What I most appreciated was how Swindell remained open and honest while sharing her stories. She speaks of her journey and desire to be an author, while finding peace in not forcing God’s plan to come through her own hands. She speaks of health and financial struggles in her family, and finding peace in following and obeying God’s plan. I was challenged to trust God in my own situations and to stick with his timeline.

The story of Hannah resonated deeply as Swindell shared her own story of miscarriage. Grief mixed with comparison and not fitting in with friends is a dangerous combination. It will steal our peace and joy. We must look to the Lord for our identity and purpose – meditating on his word and trusting in his promises and plan.

Our Great Treasure in Christ

I was most interested to see Swindwell speak on the disciples. She shows them as being connected through their relationship with each other, but ultimately tied together with Christ. Being friends, needing forgiveness, people leaving, and grasping for greatness are dynamics at play in our relationships today. The disciples, as a group and in their interpersonal relationships, experienced God’s comfort in Christ.

The book ends with a plea to find our greatest treasure in Christ. Swindell admits that we will leave this world with unfulfilled longings, but she promises that they will be met when we see our Savior face-to-face. After reading this book, I look forward to that day, and my heart is not troubled or afraid.

I received a media copy of The Path to Peace and this is my honest review.

In The Path to Peace, Ann Swindell has written a brand new 40-day devotional. She divided the book into eight different key Biblical characters and how they discovered their peace. These included Sarah, Moses, Ruth, Paul, the Disciples, and much more. As we are all aware, they didn’t live all carefree lives. They like us had things to face and deal with. She explained how each had faith and they learned the importance of peace. She looked at how having a soul at rest in God brings us true peace. She shared throughout the book how she gained peace and had a changed heart. In the book, she opened about her own story. Her and her husband had been married for about 13 years at the time. Her husband lost his job and this caused financial struggle worries. She explained how she had a lack of security about the future. She remembered how she went off on her husband about how this wasn’t what she signed up for. She didn’t want a life filled with loss and pain. She didn’t want three miscarriages and for her son to have major health issues. They moved four times within 4 and a half years. They lost their friends and were abandoned. She touched on how her husband went into full time ministry and challenges this brought. Readers will be able to see how she was able to still have peace.

I would recommend this awesome devotional to anyone is ready to rediscover peace and they are tired of living in fear and anxiety. I immensely loved how she shared different Biblical characters and their life stories. I liked how she made the story appear like you were hearing about it for the first time. She made it seems fresh and new. I loved how she mixed in her own personal life stories in the book and how she handled the changes that happened in her family. It was awesome to witness how she remained hopeful and at peace.

The Path to Peace by Ann Swindell was a book I happened upon and ended up enjoying. Although I previously was unfamiliar with Ms. Swindell's writings, I appreciated her writing style even from just her introduction to this work. Ms. Swindell has a very straightforward and genuine conversational writing style, allowing her readers to easily understand her points and applications of Scripture. I also appreciated the focus of Ms. Swindell on peace and resting in God for that peace. This is a topic that is timeless, yet especially applicable for this time in the modern world. We could all use the reminders in this book that Ms. Swindell shares to find true peace.
I appreciated the organization of this devotional. Ms. Swindell has divided this book into eight sections, each with a focus on a particular Biblical hero. Each historic character in this book was presented with Biblical context as well as bringing out that person's perspective in a very thought-provoking way. Each of the eight sections has five brief devotions, which could be read in a week. Every devotion or chapter has scripture at the beginning with further readings that the author encourages the reader to read in order to have more context of the devotional. At the conclusion of each devotional Ms. Swindell has included some questions of reflection and challenge as well as space for the reader to write some responses.
Overall, The Path to Peace was a good devotional with simple messages that were understandable. I appreciated the focus of Ms. Swindell on the Bible first, rather than her own opinions. This was a refreshing and wholesome read. I hope you have the chance to read it for yourself! Happy readings!

A path to peace is a devotional style book that leads readers on a journey of finding peace in difficult circumstances. Ann brings to life the stories of several characters from scripture including; Sarah, Moses, Ruth, Hannah, Paul, Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. These followers of God certainly knew a thing or two of hard times. And yet they clung hard to their faith, trusting in the love of God to get them through.

Ann gently weaves each scriptural account with her own difficult circumstances. Her life, though filled with many hard times, is a testimony to Gods goodness. Her bravery in sharing the hard times is like a breath of fresh air. I was encouraged that we needn't cover up our hard times and be ashamed, but rather live surrendered and open handed, trusting that God has a plan even in the painful life experiences we all experience in our lives. Our lives are a living, breathing testimony to Gods goodness and redemption.

The Path to Peace will be a blessing to many as it encourages quiet time with our loving heavenly father and His son, Jesus. The biblical retellings will encourage you to be in the word, the personal memoirs will feel like having coffee with a friend, and the journal questions will help you quietly deliberate your path to peace today.

This lovely book has encouraged me to pray for peace in my heart and home each day no matter what life's circumstances throw my way. On the days when I can't feel peace, I have been encouraged for eyes afresh from my God, who is my strength and refuge, and very much at work in my life. A simple prayer, "Lord, help," has been my path to peace so many times since reading Ann's latest book. I highly recommend.

I really loved Ann Swindell’s The Path to Peace: Experiencing God’s Comfort When You’re Overwhelmed! In The Path to Peace, Ms. Swindell has written 40 devotional entries that are divided into 8 sections (meaning each section has 5 devotional entries). Each section focuses on different Bible Stories or Bible Passages (for example Hannah or Moses) and has a corresponding Bible Passage and Reflection. Pulling from her own life experiences and what Ms. Swindell has learned from the Bible Passages mentioned, each entry is written with sound teaching, experience from someone who has been there, and a deep love for Christ.

I used The Path to Peace: Experiencing God’s Comfort When You’re Overwhelmed as part of my devotion time. I could relate to the stories that Ms. Swindell shared and the lessons she learned. I like that Ms. Swindell was real with the reader regarding her experiences and that doing things God’s Way is hard at times because of our human nature. I love how the Bible Passages and Ms. Swindell’s experiences are easily woven together into each entry. I really enjoyed reading this as part of my devotion time. The Path to Peace: Experiencing God’s Comfort When You’re Overwhelmed really ministered to me and challenged me in my walk with Christ. If you are looking for a devotional for your devotion or quiet time, then I highly recommend The Path to Peace: Experiencing God’s Comfort When You’re Overwhelmed by Ann Swindell.

Ann Swindell begins her book with her story of how she found God’s peace after thinking - and saying - “This is not what I signed up for”.

I have felt this way MANY times throughout my life, having faced trials and hardships beginning when I was a little girl and continuing throughout my life this far. I have a feeling that the trials and hardships will not end, they will just be different. So, finding this peace that Ann found is essential.

She reminds us “Holding onto faith in the Lord in the face of fear and trial is always worth it” and that “Peace comes from our souls being at rest in God rather than in our circumstances…Peace means being at rest - being content - exactly where you are because of who God is and because of your relationship through Christ”.

She takes us on a journey to discover this peace by showing us lives marked by the peace of God: Sarah, Moses, Ruth, Hannah, Mary, the disciples, Mary Magdalene and Paul. She gives scripture to read, narrative about each person’s journey and each day (40 days) provides a reflection prompt such as “Where does obedience to Christ feel hard right now? Ask him for the strength to persevere and the peace that you need to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Through these vignettes and reflection prompts, she shows us: “The same God who sustained our brothers and sisters in the Bible is doing the same for you - even right now - even today”!

Title: The Path to Peace
Author: Ann Swindell
Genre: Christian Living/Devotional
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Synopsis: “Yes, peace includes emotions of tranquility and wholeness and harmony. But…peace means being at rest—being content—exactly where you are, because of who God is and because of your relationship with him through Christ.” Peace. It’s something we all wish for, are all searching for, but life’s circumstances tend to try and rob us of it. But peace isn’t unattainable. Through her 40-day devotional, Ann Swindell walks through the lives of 8 different Bible characters and how they experienced peace even in difficult circumstances. Peace isn’t just for these ancient people; it’s for us too.

Review: At the recommendation of, I dove into this beautiful devotional. First off, the cover drew me in because it’s gorgeous and who isn’t looking for peace in their lives? With short scripture passages and daily readings, this devotional is easy to follow. Reflection questions at the end of each day help you to really think and apply scripture to your daily life. I also loved the way each daily reading is set up: Ann Swindell starts with some biblical fiction and then how she’s learned these things in her own life. It makes for a very conversational and enjoyable read. Whether you’re looking for peace now or just need to soak up truth for later, this is one you’ll want to add to your shelf.

Ann Swindell, in her new book, The Path to Peace, winsomely leads her readers to one timely truth: We can have peace. In short devotional chapters she delves into the stories of Biblical characters Sarah, Moses, Ruth, Hannah, Mary, Paul and others. Despite their fears, difficulties, insecurities, and needs they are able to walk in peace and victory by entrusting themselves to the Lord in the midst of uncertainty and pain.
No matter the challenges or hardships, the author uses the examples of these faith-filled heros to help her readers understand that "having peace means having a soul at rest in God...Because he (God) is unchanging, we have unchanging access to peace through the shelter of his presence, no matter what we are facing. And so, peace is possible in any circumstance."
The author also vulnerably parallels her own struggles along with the Biblical narrative to help readers apply timeless truth to our modern lives. She leads her readers to hope. The same peace God gave these Biblical characters and the author herself, is available to each of us. The Path to Peace beautifully invites us to experience that unshakable peace.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Path to Peace by Ann Swindell. Ann shares eight Bible characters and looks at their journey. She imagines what life what like for them which adds to the storytelling perspective. Scripture reading is suggested to go along with each day. Ann then weaves in her own story to each character and relates a life experience to each character.

Ann offers some amazing insight. These include:

Ask God for peace.
Obedience to God leads to peace with God.
Ask God to remind you of his ability.
Know that any fear you experience is meant to strengthen you to get the help you need
Fear is actually a gift to us, for it can help us when we respond to it rightly
We must learn to trust that God is at work and his way and on his schedule and we must live our lives even as we wait on him
I throughly enjoyed the Path to Peace. I would highly recommend. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review which I was more than happy to do!

The Best Devotional I’ve Ever Read

I’m not usually a fan of devotionals because I think they tend to be shallow, but this one is definitely not shallow. Ann is a gifted writer and has faced challenges in her faith during her life. I know this not only because she shares a piece from her own life in each reading, but also by the way she talks about knowing Christ and how that can influence our lives. I will be returning to this book again, I’m certain.

The only thing I didn’t like was that she included a fictional story following each day’s Scripture passage. She never claims that the made up events actually happened; she’s just using her imagination to think about what the people may have thought and experienced beyond what’s recorded, but it makes me uncomfortable when people add to the text that way. However, since I found so much value and encouragement from the devotional readings themselves, I can easily skip the short stories each day.

I have been a fan of Ann’s for quite some time. She is a genuine writer who is anchored in the Word. I’m not going to lie, when I first started the book, I was worried that maybe Ann was going to use the Bible stories to point us to how “great” these biblical “heroes” were. But instead, Ann points us to a merciful God who, in-spite of the Biblical characters’ sinful choices, remains faithful to his people and providing peace for us. She shows us the humanity of those God worked through and how we can see ourselves in them and see how God is our peace, just like he was for them.

The style of the book is appealing. Ann allows the reader bite-sized chunks for the each day that are filled with biblical truth, leaving you wanting for more. I’d recommend this for the new believer who may be in an uncertain season or for the long-time believer in search of a reminder of God’s character.

True confession: I picked up a copy of this book because of the cover. (And Kristy Cambron posted about it in a Facebook group of hers I'm in; Cambron is a fantastic author, so I often take note when she recommends something!)

Book cover and recommendation aside, though, this little devotional is a gem. Swindell's skill particularly shines as she shares about her own story, though I did enjoy the imaginative retellings of biblical stories. They defo got my own imaginative juices flowing as the stories came to life!

I'm excited to spend time in each of the 40 daily devotions, and even more importantly, in the Word. This book is a welcome addition to my devo collection.

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I was a fan of Ann’s first book, Still Waiting, and I am a fan again now! I haven’t been able to stop sharing about the Path to Peace since I started reading it! Through the characters of the Bible, Ann highlights many examples of people who found perfect peace in the One true God in the midst of tumultuous, unpredictable, terrifying, lonely, seemingly impossible situations. Ann’s is another story that can be added to that list and it is beautiful to see how God met her with his peace in the midst of a variety of difficult situations throughout her life. Her vulnerability allowed me to look back on various situations in my life and see God at work, ushering me into His peace, even now as I face heartache and unexpected transitions.

Ann Swindell has masterfully woven the stories of well known Biblical characters, sometimes referred to as the heroes of faith with her personal experiences to create a 40 day devotional that touches on all aspects of life. From trusting God through financial hardship to relying on Him through difficult relationships, to rooting yourself in Him while he transforms your identity, Ann reminds us that with God we can find a peace that surpasses all understanding and circumstances thrown our way. These Biblical characters are not glorified within the pages of A Path To Peace, instead their stories are used as a backdrop to display God‘s trustworthiness and faithfulness in equipping those who follow Him, then and today!

The soft colors and the tender words full of wisdom sprang from the pages, making the biblical stories come to life in a relatable way. I could easily relate to Ann’s personal story and felt her authentic voice to be comforting, fresh and truly reminded me of the treasures of peace as our portion as children of God. I adored soaking in Ruth's story from a perspective of peace. Great Devotional When Feeling Overwhelmed and Needing to Find Peace!

A great mix of scripture and life experiences that can help you find tools to help find a path to peace in your life. The reflection help you to ponder and wrestle through some areas you might be struggling with.

A few similar experiences that I could really relate to and actually really helped me reframe them and hopefully God will work on my heart more. It really helps to hear someone talk about their experiences in a humble and real way that allows you to open those areas that we’ve been hurt in and grow. I’m thankful I found this book.

Our only true source of peace is God, and that's who Ann points us to again and again. Divided into easy-to-digest chapters and sections, The Path to Peace reminds us that God is trustworthy and that he cares for the details of our lives. I love the way Ann made Bible stories come alive by considering how the characters would have felt in their situations. The devotions are interwoven with the author's own struggles and stories of how God shows up in hard or unexpected circumstances. An encouraging read for anyone who is struggling to understand how God can promise us peace when our circumstances feel anything but peaceful. Highly recommend.

I love how the author tells stories of people in the Bible in addition to the battles that she has faced. With each story, you get a deeper understanding of the problems that we all deal with. She gives clarity to our emotions that can feel cloudy. Then she takes scripture and gives hope and direction in each case. This book peels back the layers in our Christian life and helps wash away the things that don’t help us, in order to bring in the truth from God’s Word that will help bring us peace. I also like that this book has different sections based on different needs for peace. Super practical and relatable!
