I can’t leave a review like this and not explain why. I like Candace. She’s adorable, and I’ve even met her! But not everyone who is famous should be out there providing content. Women deserve more than fluff. We deserve more than scripture being taken out of context. We deserve more than paraphrases listed in the same place as translations.

For example, from Powered to Lead…she quotes Proverbs 12:24 at the beginning but she tears it out of context. And then she uses 1 Peter 5:2-4. This is specifically written to the elders of the church.

And then in Powered to Rejoice, she uses The Message (paraphrase). In Galatians 6:1, it says “Be creative, friends.” I mean this kindly…what in the world does that have to do with what Galatians 6:1 actually says?! (Please seriously. If someone can explain…this is keeping me up at night…)

This was gifted to me, so I wanted to read it. But I would never recommend this. It felt like I had to have my discernment on an extra high level just to get through it.

I pray that women will move away from books that ask the question, “What does this same about me?” And move towards books that ask the question, “What does this say about God, and what does that, in turn, say about me?” If we don’t, we’ll continue to have a selfish interest in the Bible, and we’ll never get past cherry picking whatever verse fits our own selfish hearts.

Fantastic devo! I loved reading this in addition to my other devos/Bible and seeing how the same passages of Scripture would come up.
