The Endless Song: The Soul Thief

Rate this book
“There is magic in the very soil on which you walk. In this world, it can gain the power to corrupt the innocent and create chaos. The Devourer could once again become the Destroyer.”

The Race Wars waged on for a thousand years, nearing the annihilation of all three species before three powerful leaders, a witch, a vampire, and a human, realized that they were in a struggle that none could win. On Ethereal, nature had created a perfectly interdependent system; a balance of light and dark magic was required for a witch or a vampire to survive. Humans needed it too, for the magic that leaked through the pores of paranormals fed the flora and fauna and gave humanity their creative spark—their ingenuity.

That world was in peril from an invading entity known as the Devourer. It ravaged worlds by siphoning off huge quantities of magic, drawing it from every source, people, animals, and plants until it was depleted, but that wasn’t the worst threat it posed.

Its true name was Soul Thief, and it fed on souls. The soulless ones were zombie-like, ravenously grasping at anything that moved to fill the void, but there was usually nothing left in that world to fill it.

It had also released upon the world a new drug called Shifter, which had the potential to destroy the Peace Alliance and once again plunge the world into war.

Now a powerful witch, her vampire lover, and a godlike figure from another world must combine their forces to prevent Ethereal from falling to such a terrible fate.

Mariah McClain's story puts a new twist on the relationship between vampires, humans and witches. The romance between Minerva and Nathaniel is exciting and heartfelt. The rich cast of characters keeps the story intense and interesting. I especially enjoyed the character of Eric Sterling (his connection to Minerva is that of a son and protector) and love the role of magic as a power that requires balance between light and dark. The ending is satisfying, and leaves this reader looking forward to the rest of the series!
