I very much enjoyed this sweet, and sometimes humorous, historical romance set in England in 1763. The heroine, 23 year old Sophie Andrews, is much more interested in botany than any of the other "appropriate" upper class society pastimes or suitors that her parents try to interest her in. When she finally meets a man who makes her heart beat uncontrollably, and thinks of her as an intelligent peer and not just a decoration on his arm, she is overjoyed, but soon realizes Ian Blackpool is not the man she originally assumed he was. As the author's note states at the end of the book, this book is "about following your heart, wherever and with whomever it takes you". It's also a reminder to be true to you. :-)

Lost a star because the beginning was a bit slow and scattered, taking me awhile to get into the story. But the rest was fabulous. Ms. Archer has such a great voice.

This book had potential, but it got lost somewhere in the plot. The hero started off as one thing, but he was really another. It didn't really make sense why he had left home. The heroine loved botany and thought she was this great botanist. Of course, back in those days women were not allowed to do anything. LOL. The way they met was pretty cute, but as the story went on I just thought it was silly. The author tried to put some intrigue into it by inserting a deadly, dastardly villain. I wasn't really intrigued though. So, it wasn't a bad book. I liked it, but I guess I expected a little more.

Zoe Archer is a romance author that is new to me, and I WILL be buying another of her books. That is probably the best testament to enjoyment -- the willingness to shell out $$$ to buy another book. In this book, I particularly liked the fact that the heroine refused to give up her "career" interests in order to capture true love (In earlier years, dear younger readers, this was not always the case.) and I liked this description of the hero's smile: "(He) truly seemed to enjoy life, as though it were a merry gift that kept unfolding in surprising and delightful ways." One could do worse than to fall for a man like this! _

Unlike Archer's other books I have read so far, this book made me drag through it. The plot was minimal and flat up until the last 30 pages or so when the climax made its presence known.

Ik heb de nederlandse vertaling gelezen ( Liefdesdrank - Candlelight historische roman 685 ). Het is een origineel verhaal maar niet super romantisch en de liefdes scene was maar zozo .
