A somewhat disappointing adaptation of the somewhat disappointing movie. J.M. Dillard is definitely one of the best Star Trek authors out there, but unlike Vonda N. McIntyre (who adapted the first four movies), Dillard has never added that much to her novelisations – perhaps because this was vetoed by the publishers or Paramount. I seem to remember adaptations of Star Trek 5 and Generations was the last time Dillard was able to add her own material. As such, Nemesis is a fairly entertaining light read, but adds little beyond the superficial script level. The plot itself has been much debated in Trek circles – all connected with the production seem to think Logan is a genius who has fashioned a masterpiece, but it’s quite clear that although he has the right ideas and fannish enthusiasm, Nemesis does not quite convince, perhaps a bit too operatic and theatrical in nature, and the inclusion of B-4 was arguably a mistake.
