It was just a weekend reunion among old friends. How did it turn so deadly?
Dr. Lacey Elrod is the first-ever medical examiner for her hometown, a place that should be safe from serial killers. But when someone murders one of her high school best friends on the morning of the wedding of two other friends, Lacey must trust U.S. Fish and Wildlife Officer Matthew Flick, the man she left fourteen years ago, to keep her safe and help her find the Dunes Killer before he strikes again. After more murders among their friend group, Lacey and Matt suspect one of their old friends of being the Dunes Killer. But when that friend turns up dead too, they must work together to rid their town of the killer.
Can Matt move past his hurt with Lacey for how she handled their unwanted teenaged pregnancy and how it ruined his plans to go into the ministry? Will Lacey be able to forgive herself? Both struggle with their faith and with each other as they track the Dunes Killer before he succeeds at killing them.

This twisty story kept me up way past my bedtime. Johnson did a great job of drawing me in with interesting characters and a great location. Her characters are well-rounded and the romance was sweet. And the mystery kept me guessing to the end!
WOW!! This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is full of action, danger, suspense, and drama. This is an outstanding Christian Romantic Suspense and a *Must Read* book! I loved it. I received a complimentary copy and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book offered a large selection of suspects, and it became evident early on that Lacey, the medical examiner, might know the Dunes Killer personally. When her friends gathered for a remarriage of two of their friends, the tension increased as discord among the friends became evident.
Lacey and Matt had a relationship in high school, and now are forced to reevaluate what happened as they struggle to determine who is friend and who is foe. Will they become more than friends now that they're older and wiser?
Lots of twists and turns with a surprise ending I didn't see coming.
I enjoyed the book and will be looking to read this author's other books.
Desolate Escape was a thrilling read! I found myself drawn into the story pretty much right away and the book just kept getting better and better as I continued reading. I enjoyed the characters and how the romance was a second-chance story.
The mystery was very good. I wasn't able to guess who the killer was - not even right before the reveal. I didn't know how the ending was going to all play out - it was insane and very suspenseful.
All in all, Desolate Escape was a great read and I definitely recommend it to fans of this genre.

I love how God gives two people a second chance even when they don’t think it could work. Maybe He might even get to the bottom of a dangerous problem.
Desolate Escape is a suspenseful, thrilling read involving danger and a mystery. It drew me right in from the start and kept me guessing who the killer was until the end. This is also a story of second chance at love.
In this action-packed story, you’ll be watching over your shoulder. A variety of suspects kept me guessing.
One evening, eight old high school friends are happily reuniting for a wedding weekend. Hours later, one of them is dead, washed up on shore.
Lacey and Matthew, the heroine and hero, are complex, three-dimensional characters who have been estranged for over a decade. Their previous relationship with its falling out complicates their efforts to uncover the killer—who keeps on striking.
If you like clean romance and second chances blended with ongoing suspense and a strong faith element—along with a strong sense of setting—give Desolate Escape a try. Start reading early enough in the evening so as not to disrupt sleep.
This story grabbed me from the beginning and didn’t let me go. It’s a well written story with amazing characters. It will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. It has plenty of drama, suspense, twists and lots of suspects. It is so well written that you don’t know who the killer is until it’s actually revealed- unless you peek ahead. Don’t do it, it’ll ruin the surprise. This is definitely a must read.
I love the story line! This is one of the books I couldn't put down. Up very late wanting to know if they were going to survive! The only issue I have with this book is some how it came all color coded with different colors of font and highlights. I got some pages with regular font and the the next few were blue and I would have to change my background to read it.
Honestly, I'm not sure why I finished this book. Clueless characters who kept doing the same things over and over. Lacey and Matt had fourteen years to recover from a teenage pregnancy which separated them but still felt unforgivable. Lacey's character was overbearing and Matt was a wimp who did not display the strength of Christian men. I was glad to leave the Alabama coast. Lol
I loved this book. I admite my theory for the killer was way off but I liked the result nonethless, it was unexpected. Lacey was stubborn and wouldn't give up knowing who was killing all those people. Matt just wanted a second chance and to protect, it was cute. They deserved a second chance after the way their first ended
This was an engaging story set by the beach. You can feel the heat and tension and storms coming at the characters as they navigate their past and... hopefully... their future. Really looking forward to finishing out the series!
This book had me guessing all the way to the end. The plot kept twisting. I felt every emotion and all the anxiety of each character. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a combination of Christianity, romance and suspense.
If you are looking for a suspense where you can guess the ending, this is it! I had things totally wrong. This book was action packed and different then many others I have read. I definitely recommend.
Good story!! Very suspenseful! If you like authors like Lynette Eason, Lynn Blackburn, etc., you should like this story. There are some errors in the book, but overall, I really enjoyed it.
Its refreshing to read a novel free of foul language and explicit sexual scenes. This "who done it" kept this reader guessing until the ending. I highly recommend.
