Welcome to Horror Heights: can the children who live here conceal the strange goings on behind closed doors? GOOSEBUMPS for a new generation, by award-winning comedian and CITV presenter, Bec Hill.
Connie hasn't found her talent yet, but at least she has her slime collection - if it's gooey, she's got it! She hopes that by adding a few extra ingredients to a simple recipe she will uncover a talent for slime-making, but alas, all she uncovers is a hot, stinky mess which ends up in the bin. It's shaping up to be another uneventful weekend ... until her failed slime experiment wakes her up the next morning. It's alive! And can talk! And is named... Big.
Big adores Connie and wants to protect her from everything at all times, which is very sweet. At first. But when it gets bigger, grows teeth and threatens to eat her friends and father, can Connie uncover her TRUE talents in order to protect everything from THE SLIME?
Great for fans of Goosebumps and anyone wanting entry level horror stories for kids. An easy to read, graphic novel style, chapter book about Connie, dubbed 'Queen of Slime'. Everyone in Connie's class has a talent. She doesn't feel she has one, so every week when she is out shopping with her dad, she buys slime and takes it to school. One week, she has no slime so decides to make her own. A little creativity in her slime making leads to her making a sentient slime that at first seems cute and biddable, but quickly turns sinister. Funny, mildly scary and very gross. Perfect for readers aged 6 plus.
Welcome to Horror Heights, the brilliant creep-tastic new series from award-winning stand-up comedian, television writer and all-round entertainer, Bec Hill.
Eleven-year-old Connie is the ‘Queen of Slime’, a title she has earned by impressing her friends with new tubs of the gooey stuff on a regular basis. However, when her dad has an accident and is unable to go to the supermarket Connie has to get creative to make sure she has some new slime for school on Monday.
But Connie doesn’t create slime, she creates a living thing that rapidly evolves into something far bigger. Soon, it’s not just Connie’s ‘Queen of Slime’ title that is under threat, her life, her friends lives and the whole of Horror Heights could be in danger if Connie cannot put a stop to her creation…
Unlike Connie, who doesn’t quite have the correct ingredients to make home-made slime, Bec Hill has all the right components for the perfect comedy-horror. It has rightly been labelled as ‘Goosebumps for a new generation’ and just like the classic horror books from R. L. Stine garnered their own fan base, Horror Heights will no doubt be hooking in its own mass following of readers who will be sticking with the series much like home-made slime sticks to your fingers.
Set in a normal suburban neighbourhood, it could be yours, and with likeable characters and relatable everyday situations, The Slime is a cracking blend of funny and frightening moments that have you laughing along one minute and then checking that those tubs of slime you have stashed away haven’t taken on a life of their own the next.
Slimy and gooey, exciting and creepy, kids will love the unfolding slime-fest as the at first adorable Big Yikes, who is helpful and friendly - we all need a blob of slime that tidies the bedroom and is more than happy to do homework - evolves into a creepy monster who has its eyes set on eating its creator and her friends.
I loved main protagonist Connie, she is a brilliant young girl who, like many children, is trying to figure out her purpose and where her talent lies. Her close knit group of friends are so typical of girls that age, there are doubts and there are fallings out but when the time comes they all band together.
Horror Heights is a seriously cool book; the funky front cover draws you in, slime oozes across the pages throughout and the dyslexia friendly font means every reader can enjoy it. With an ending that sets up perfectly for book two which is due in April 2022, and with book three publishing in September 2022, readers will be left desperate for the next in the series, in the meantime they may think twice about making their own slime.
With huge thanks to Bec Hill, Hachette and Hodder Children’s Books for this brilliant story.
Perfect for any slime fans. Easy, fast paced read at just under 150 pages. Connie is the queen of slime and after making her own which comes to life and starts to turn to evil and ruin her friendships she doesn’t know what to do or how to stop this slime monster she created named Big. Full of imagination. Different. Who will win the slime or Connie? A well deserved four stars from me.
Purporting to be the opener to a series of thirteen linked novels, this takes us for the first time to the district of Horror Heights, where our author has allegedly found evidence of the baker's dozen of bizarre and nightmarish events. This one proves to be a slow-burning drama of a girl who is forced to create her own slime – and finds it coming to life. At first it's a cutesy little thing, but that's only when it's a baby – when it grows, learns and finds out about its world it's not just going to be pizza leftovers it wants to be eating…
This was a success, in my mind. Gentle toilet humour, a quickly sped-through narrative, and more or less a relatable lead character all add to the immediacy, and whether or not the slime fad has passed already this "The Blob"-like horror judges its genre well and provides perfectly suitable entertainment. Kudos, too, for being presented for dyslexic and similar audiences yet with all the shelf appeal of a mass-market paperback.
This wasn't my cup of tea. I heard it would be a new Goosebumps but as a kid who read Goosebumps I can appreciate that the content was written specifically for children of this generation so I just felt a little bored.
I am sure that younger readers reading it now would probably love it especially children that own 'slime'

This book is utterly brilliant. Easy to read, hilarious and just creepy enough to tingle the toes of the youngest (and oldest!) readers. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!
In Horror Heights slime comes alive and ghosts haunt your phone. If you love the Goosebumps series, you'll love these! Perfect for spooky middle grade readers.
Horror Heights is a strange town. Odd things keep happening to the students in one particular class. Bec Hill has collected their creepy stories and is trying to see if their terrifying encounters are linked, or maybe everyone just had an unlucky weekend.
Connie isn't logical like her friend Nat, or athletic like her friend Allyce, all she has is her slime collection...well, okay, her teacher has confiscated most of the collection, but still Connie is known as "The Queen of Slime" at school and that is something, at least. When a home slime making goes wrong Connie dumps it in the bin and worries that her title might be slipping away from her but it turns out Connie has more skills than anyone realised because the next morning her slime greets her from her pillow! She has accidentally created walking, talking, sentient slime...and it loves her! It wants to spend every moment with her. She won't be needing any other friends now...
