His death was ruled a suicide... but could it be murder? After two recent murder cases, Chalk Gap is shook again when the body of local teacher Jackson King is found at the foot of West Chalk Cliff in the usually quiet seaside village. While his death is ruled a suicide, Jackson’s wife is convinced it’s foul play and convinces local murder mystery enthusiast Edward Crisp to help prove it. Can Edward solve THE MYSTERY OF JACKSON KING? And can YOU? ______________________ This book is a novella about a ¼ length of the full Edward Crisp novels. It can be read as a stand-alone story or as part of the series (the timeframe is between book 2 and book 3). Please note that this ebook is also available for free on joining Peter Boon’s mailing list; please see Peter’s social media accounts or website for details. The Edward Crisp Mysteries are cozy mystery novels aimed at adults, but are usually also suitable for young adult members of the family. However, please note that this particular story contains themes of suicide which some may find distressing. _____________________ PRAISE FOR PREVIOUS EDWARD CRISP 'This book is a little treasure to be shared.' 'A happy place book.' ‘Wonderfully written with great characters, I can’t wait to read the next one.’ ‘it took me back to the days of watching Miss Marple.’ 'The perfect novel for a rainy day.' ‘I laughed, I cried, I shouted aloud and made more than a few wrong guesses.’ ‘A fantastic traditional whodunnit brought to modern day.’ ‘A real page turner and one I couldn’t put down.’
3.75* A novella. I usually prefer something bigger to sink my teeth into, was persuaded to read this while I’m waiting to read the next Edward Crisp mystery. I do enjoy the light easy going nature of the writing. You can just tell that you are in for a pleasant comfortable journey. There’s an easy relationship between Edward and his gossip loving mom, and his foster brother, who are both enjoying that relationship. Jackson King has died, with the coroner’s verdict being suicide. Despite a history of mental health problems his wife is certain that he didn’t commit suicide, and asks Edward to investigate the death. There was less humour in this book, which is what I enjoy about the books. It felt a bit like an episode of death in paradise with the final reveal. An enjoyable read.
Didn't realize, when I started this that it's a novella ... almost a short story. But that's o.k. I was looking for something light before bed and it fit the bill -- and I finished it in one sitting.
Though short, it has Boon's usual humor and style. Jackson King is a 'supply teacher' -- sort of a permanent substitute -- who fills in as needed in the surrounding district. He's found dead at the bottom of one of the cliffs and it's ruled a suicide as there was an eyewitness: one of the volunteer "chaplains" (apparently based on a real thing) who patrol the cliffs with a goal of preventing such suicides.
But his wife isn't convinced and wants Edward (and, of course, Noah) to investigate.
As usual, it's a tight mystery, and doesn't suffer at all from being short. Impressive really, as writing good short fiction is a different skill to writing novels. Kudos to Mr Boon.
What a treat to have this Novella published whilst waiting for book 3 in this fabulous series.
This is a short story which took me an hour to read which was a perfect way to start my Saturday whilst having my coffee. Here Edward is asked to investigate a suicide and prove it was murder. I loved that Reverend Flowers had more of a role in this story and pleased that Edward's mother was also back.
Yes the story was short, but it was full of action and entertainment with a really good storyline. I really do love this series, the characters, setting and storylines are all wonderful. For me this is the perfect cosy crime series. Looking forward to book 3.
I am a big fan of the Edward Crisp mysteries so I was very excited when Peter Boon sent out a free novella!
We are back at Chalk Gap, Jackson King has recently died at the cliffs, the police have said its suicide but his wife believes he was murdered! She asks Edward (and Noah) to investigate.
I honestly love the characters in these stories, Edward the anxious one, Noah with his quirky ways and inappropriate one liners and then when you add in their mum 🤣
I loved it! I patiently await the next installment!

Really enjoyed this compact murder mystery! This was my first novella that I’ve ever read and it was a great place to start. I was worried the characters and storyline would loose the essence which made me love them, but I had nothing to worry about!
It’s a great little teaser ready for the next Edward Crisp Mystery🙌
When a teacher at the local school dies after a fall from the cliffs, rumors fly that it was a suicide. When his widow announces that her husband was murdered and that Edward would find the killer, what choice does he have but to help?
This series has everything. Likeable and relatable characters, mystery, and even humor.
A quick read with our fave characters. Edward and Noah are asked by a widow to investigate her husband's supposed suicide. Did he jump? Or was there something else going on? A great story if you are looking for a quick whodunit
This novella, plot-wise set between books 2 and 3 in the series, was a quaint little story that returns the reader to Chalk Gap. The same cast of characters. The same premise: solve a murder. The same triumphant ending in which Edward solves the day. I have really come to enjoy these homey murders...if you can ever really call murder homey. I read this in less than one hour.
Only a few weeks ago the village of Chalk Gap were in the midst of the 'Snow Day Murders' and now the village is reeling from the suicide of Jackson King - a substitute teacher, leaving behind his wife Mary and baby son, Joshua. Mary does not believe her husband committed suicide and ropes in our favourite librarian, Edward Crisp and his iconic sidekick, Noah, to prove it. Edward and Noah are using their detective skills to work out if Mary's suspicion is a product of grief or if her husband really was murdered.
Another triumph for Peter Boon! I love Edward and Noah - they are one of my favourite crime fighting duos and I know I will always have a giggle while I read some of their dialogue - especially where Momma Crisp is involved! In this short novella I found myself trying to work out what happened just as I had with Boon's previous novels Who Killed Miss Finch and The Snow Day Murders but as always, like an episode of Jonathan Creek, I never get it right!!
If you want a light hearted mystery then this is the novella for you!
