The plan is simple. Get to the weretiger realm where a wise woman will be able to help Sarroch and I get a mating bond in place, thus saving me from execution.

Easy peasy, lemon squeasy.

Of course it ends up going more like difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

Which is why right now I’m standing in the stunning forest of the weretiger realm, facing Sarroch in tiger form.

Except that it’s not Sarroch any more. Something has taken control of him. Something that for some reason doesn’t like me one bit and is clearly determined to destroy me.

Little old me with my weak magic, facing off against one of the oldest and most powerful weretigers in existence.

Anyone care to place a bet on the outcome?

Or you can just read Chained by Memory now to see how it all goes down

Celine Jeanjean is French, grew up in the UK and now she travels the world as a nomadic writer. That makes her a tad confused about where she is from. During her travels she's watched the sun rise over Angkor Wat, lost her shoes in Vietnam, and fallen off a bamboo raft in China.

Celine writes stories that feature quirky characters and misfits, set in wondrous worlds.

Apiya and weretiger Sarroch are on a mission to form a mating bond. Which is going to prove very difficult because of something in Sarroch’s past. Centuries past. The longer you hold onto something, the harder it is to get rid of. Sarroch didn’t even know he was holding on. You may wonder what he is holding on to, but I will let you read the story to find out.

In order to complete the mission, Apiya and Sarroch will go globetrotting: from Panong to Bhutan to London to somewhere not on any map. With a traveler’s eye for detail, the author sets the story in exotic and wonderful places. In London, the reader will meet Pree, Apiya’s friend, who is an absolute stitch!

There are many things I like about this book and series: the quirky barber to magical beings (Apiya), her artist friend (Chai), the Asian influence and setting, the magic, and Apiya’s nerdy father are just a few of them. But my favorite thing has to be Hunter, Apiya’s dog. Hunter is barely in Chained by Memory. But, at a crucial time, Apiya needs the ability to forgive and love. In order to do this, she thinks of Hunter and his unfailing unconditional love. Oh my, this moment touched my heart so!

Chained by Memory is a short novel at about 200 pages. I have been gobbling up the Razor’s Edge Chronicles as soon as I can get my hands on each book. I recommend you start at the beginning, but if you really want to jump in here with #6, that’s okay too.

Many thanks to the author who provided a copy of her book in exchange for my honest review.

I love this series! Taking place in Panong, a fictitious Asian country where Mundane Humans and Magical Mayak live together with many or most Mundanes never realizing the existence of their magical neighbors, there is a fine line between peaceful co-existence and all out war - Especially when quite a few of the Mayak are vampiric predators who consider the Mundane Humans to be their favorite food source.

Apiya is not your usual heroic protagonist. Her magic is not epic or even reliable. The hero part is pretty accurate though, as she will risk her life to help a friend and continuously finds herself in harm's way.

Not accepted by the Mayak, as one of them, her life is in jeopardy for killing a Mayak in self defense, unless she and her friend, Sarroch, a shifter, weretiger, (who she has a huge crush on) can successfully complete the mating bond, which will grant her full Mayak status. The biggest problem is that Sarroch's tiger seems more likely to kill her than accept her as Sarroch's mate.

Chained by Memory is the 6th book in the Razor's Edge Chronicles and continues where book 5 left off, so they are definitely best read in order from Book 1.

I highly recommend this whole series!

I love this latest installment. Especially the interaction between Apiya and Sarroch, and how the story shows both their vulnerabilities as well as their strengths. For those that like a bit of drama and excitement in their reading, and a happy ending, this is a great continuation of this series. In previous stories, we learn about Apiya as we go along on her adventures. In this one, we learn more about Sarroch, his past, and how he’s viewed and treated by others – and the importance of forgiveness.

Hopefully, in the next installment, we’ll find out how the rest of the Mayak are going to react. So many possibilities. For those new to the series, I do think reading the series in order helps a lot. For a taste / intro, to the series, sign up for the newsletter on the author’s website. She also has another series called the “Viper and the Urchin” which is also very entertaining.

Book 6 of the series, it must be read in order to make sense. This book continues right where book 5 left off and really could have been combined to be the same book. I understand that the author is writing smaller books so as to release them quicker and I actually like that. I also enjoy the quick read that these books are.
The story is enjoyable and to the point, but that also means that some things are just skimmed over. I would have liked to read more of the interaction with Apiyas parents but I get that that wasn't really what the story was about.
Don't expect this book to be more than what it is, it's written in the same style as the previous books and since we already know the characters, well most of them, there's not much time spent on the things we already know.

Review originally posted on A Keyboard and an Open Mind 4 October 2021:

In this installment of the Razor’s Edge, we depart the island nation of Panong and head to Bhutan, to the weretiger realm. I really enjoyed seeing this new aspect of the world, and I LOVED it. It sounded so beautiful and safe. I would have quite happily read a whole book set here, but of course, things don’t go smoothly for Apiya. I really enjoyed the way Jeanjean mixed European and Asian folklore without it seeming forced.

I felt like the stakes in this book were higher than in some of the previous ones, with the revelations about Apiya’s true identity that came about in the last couple of books really causing problems here.

Of course, this being a light-hearted urban fantasy series, you can guess how things wrap up, but the journey is still a lot of fun!

The final novel of The Razor’s Edge Chronicles by Celine Jeanjean has just been published. At the end of the last book, Apiya had been threatened with execution by the Mayaks and only a mating bond with Sarroch can save her. There is no doubting the close relationship they have when he is in human form but when he changes to a weretiger he turns against her.

The story begins with a terrifying but amusing flight across the Himalayas in an old rust bucket piloted by the handsome Sarroch. He does his best to protect Apiya but as usual she must be brave and creative to solve their problems. I think I enjoyed this volume most of all but I am really going to miss the characters including the cat and the dog who relate so well to Apiya.

In every other book in the series, Apiya has found herself in increasingly dire situations, but at the end of this one, it seems she has finally landed on her feet. Although there are still a lot of unsettled issues, Yue for one, at least for now it seems that things have been resolved.

The werecat realm was very interesting, although the book doesn't spend a lot of time there. We also learn of a reason that might explain Sarroch's on-again-off-again attitude towards Apiya. The meeting of Apiya's childhood friend seems a little fortuitous and makes you wonder if "the powers that be" might have been at work.

Sadly, for me at least, there is almost no Tim of Chai in this book.

I absolutely loved the first few books in this series but I've struggled to get through the last two and especially this one.
The relationship with Sarroch is just so forced, literally. They don't seem to have any chemistry, more like good friends. The fact that he's still married makes me uncomfortable, I know she's an awful being but he played a part in that, but yeah go you mate with someone else mate.
The books are very short so obviously don't go into any great depth which is disappointing as the world and characters deserve better.

Apiya confronts Sarroch dark past....

Apiya this time tries to solve Sarroch dark pasts confronting his inner demon...with a deadline from her trial...
A funny story full of adventures that made me enjoy it from the start till the end. If you enjoyed the Viper and the Urchin stories you'll enjoy this one too and be on your toes waiting the next installment.

Very Satisfying Book

Oh loved this one. Great storyline with a great ending. And I loved Apiya's best friend, Pru. I was hoping Pru would go to Panong with Apiya. I feel sad that there are no more books out in the series for me to read. Oh well, the author has other series I can look into.

worldly travels and near death…

Well, Apiya is in the soup for sure. In her efforts to rescue her Baku friend, things go horribly wrong and she is placed on trial by the Mayan Elders. Some subterfuge just barely allows her to escape a death sentence, but only until the next full moon. Can Apiya and Surrach pull off a miracle? Find out in this volume.

The best paced and my favourite of the series so far. Lots of relationship build, some good protagonist action, and good development of the series arc. A quick, fun read, and a great launching point for the next book.

Fun fantasy

Loved Apiya and all the characters actually. Quite imaginative
I didn't appreciate how short each book was. It felt like a greed ploy.
Despite enjoying these stories quite a lot, I won t ever buy another book by this author

The romance was anticlimactic, I’m glad there was progress but the buildup didn’t interest me. I loooved the tour we took in this book. The introduction of Bhutanese culture and the were-tiger realm made this book for me. I also found the airplane scenes hilarious.

This series is so good now! The characters work well together (or they may not on purpose!). The story is progressing nicely and we are wondering exactly how the human race will deal with the newest (or really old) arrivals.

A great book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was hair raising action almost from beginning to the end. The plot is easily followed and the story is a good one. I definitely recommend this book.
