Amaranth takes place in a world where the earth has been flooded by the wrath of the creator, and the remainder of civilization is surviving on the Ark. It has been a full century since the flood and dry land has yet to be found. Harsh class systems and outcast stowaways are causing simmering tensions among civilization on the ship. A prison interrogator Emily, whose own Mother was executed for treason, searches desperately to answers about her Mother’s ties to the rebel group known as the brotherhood.

Meanwhile a mysterious disease causing hallucinations and eventually death is spreading rapidly through the occupants of the ship. Skyler, a young up and coming doctor is eagerly looking for both a cure and a cause to this puzzling illness.

I had the joy of reading this ARC before publication, and loved every minute of it! It was action packed, and fast paced! I was fascinated by the dynamics of the passengers among the ship, especially the clash of the class systems. However what we really need to talk about were those TWISTS! I felt like I was blindsided again and again in the second half of the book. I couldn’t decide who to trust! THAT ENDING! 🙌🏼 I am left with so many questions and eager for the sequel!

THEY THOUGHT THE FLOOD WAS THE END.

I'm very happy to have received an ARC of Amaranth. I looked forward to reading his book the moment I found out about it, and it was worth the wait!

Amaranth is a dystopian novel set in an underwater ark and centered around two main characters who also happen to be best friends: Skyler and Emily. The people of the ark constantly tries to seek out land, but rebellion within poses a challenge to the ark's leaders.

Something about a story that takes place in a closed space just ups the tension. The writing style is haunting; it definitely triggered a sort of claustrophobia as I read it. There were times I had to put the book down to breathe and collect my bearings from the drama unfolding.

If you love dystopian science-fiction novels with a unique setting and an interesting cast of characters, this one is for you.

Ce que j’aime avec le fait d’être blogueuse littéraire, c’est que je découvre régulièrement des pépites incroyables, qui me rappelle pourquoi j’adore lire. Et aussi pourquoi j’adore partager ces romans avec d’autres personnes (aka vous, cher lecteur). « Amarante » fait clairement parti de ces romans. Je ne savais pas forcément à quoi m’attendre au départ, avec seulement la couverture assez énigmatique et le résumé qui en dit à la fois trop et pas assez (un résumé parfait, du coup ?). J’avais hâte de me plonger dans ma lecture… Je vous en dit plus ?
Le roman alterne les points de vue entre celui de Skyler Goldberg et Emily Bates, les deux héros de notre histoire. L’histoire se passe dans un monde apocalyptique, dans lequel la Terre est submergée et les survivants vivent désormais sous l’eau dans d’énorme cité sous-marine. Et pour améliorer le tout, un virus s’est déclenché pour lequel ils n’ont aucun remède. Et un virus…mortel. Au début du roman, le docteur Skyler s’occupe d’un patient, ce qui nous permet de découvrir les nouvelles technologies de ce monde et découvrir les effets du virus sur les gens. Ils ont donc des hallucinations, des petites voies nommées « les Fées » qui les poussent à se tuer d’une façon ou d’une autre. Aucun n’échappe à ce funeste destin. L’autre héroïne, Emily, fait partie de la police. Elle traque un groupe nommé les « Dissident », un groupe refusant l’autorité mise en place via des actes violents qui mettent en danger la vie des citoyens. Au fur et à mesure, cependant, on va découvrir que la réalité est bien plus sombre qu’il n’y paraît…
Niveau personnage, j’ai été surprise par le personnage de Skyler. Je ne m’attendais pas forcément à cette backstory, ni à avoir un personnage aussi touchant que sensible. C’est un garçon profondément brisé et même avec le twist de fin, je doute que sa situation s’arrange (car oui ceci est un tome 1 j’ai oublié de le mentionner). Il m’a fait de la peine et j’ai vraiment hâte de voir s’il va être capable de surmonter toutes les épreuves qu’il a traversé pour se reconstruire. Emily n’en mène pas large non plus, même si au quotidien, elle a une vie relativement tranquille (contrairement à Skyler) même si elle subit aussi une certaine discrimination puisque c’est la fille d’une traîtresse. C’est plutôt vers la fin du roman que la pauvre jeune femme s’en prend plein la tête, concernant sa famille et tout ce qu’elle pensait savoir sur sa mère, d’ailleurs. C’est une révélation assez choquante mais que j’ai grandement apprécié.
Ce n'est pas du tout ce à quoi je m'attendais. Dans un roman qui nous parle de virus, d'Humanité rescapée et de survie, il est vrai que je ne m'attendais pas à autant de retournements de situations. Les personnages sont fidèles à eux-mêmes du début à la fin, avec certaines prises de conscience qui leur permettent de grandir et d'évoluer. L'intrigue est très intéressante, avec beaucoup de nouvelles technologies que j'ai adoré... C'était vraiment une très belle découverte !

L'humanité a survécu sous l'eau.


Nous faisons la connaissance de Skyler médecin à bord de l'Arche, une sorte de sous-marin où l'humanité à embarqué il y a 5 générations lors de la brusque montée des eaux qui a englouti tout le globe. Avec l'aval de son supérieur, il a créé des sphères de mémoires qu'ils utilisent lots de la mort de patient pour pouvoir offrir et garder leurs souvenirs.
Lui doit vivre avec le souvenir de la mort de son grand frère et doit vivre avec la dépression de sa mère qui l'accuse de la disparition de celui-ci, quant à son père, il s'enferme dans son travail d'océanographe.
Sa meilleure amie Emily, est une agent qui travaille à la prison dans l'extension d'aveux. Elle veut blanchir son nom de famille qui est associé au mot Trahison. Sa mission est de découvrir où se cachent les Dissidents, un groupe de terroriste en marge des Archéens. Lorsqu'un virus tue les survivants chaque camp en joue, et force chacun à les choisir car la guerre ne saurait tarder.
Au jeu des faux semblants, qui gagne qui perds. Qui est vraiment qui et surtout les gens morts le sont-ils vraiment avec les
sphères?


Dans l'ensemble je dirai que j'ai passé un agréable moment sous l'eau en compagnie de nos survivants.
Le seul bémol à été pour moi le trop grand nombre de personnages et d'informations distillés dans ce premier tome.
J'ai beaucoup aimé les intrigues différentes que l'on a ici, au final elles se regroupent toutes et nous offre une belle perspective pour la suite des événements.
Une découverte scientifique, une pandémie à bord qui est difficile à gérer et qui sort de nulle part à première vue ainsi qu'une lutte pour la survie et pour le pouvoir. Malheureusement on voit que malgré tout le temps passé sous l'eau n'a pas changé les mentalités et qu'il y a toujours des rapports de force entre les deux groupes distincts à bord de l'Arche.
Rebondissements, secrets, révélations, trahisons font de ce roman une aventure anxiogène et malgré les quelques éclairs d'espoir, d'humanité, d'amour que l'ont à par moment.
Le fait que désormais, l'Humanité vit sous l'eau à bord d'une sorte de sous-marin nous offre un huis-clos légèrement angoissant pour les claustrophobes.
J'ai beaucoup aimé le style d'écriture de l'auteur, les longueurs n’alourdissent pas le récit et au contraire nous plonge encore plus sous les eaux. Les personnages quant à eux sont intéressants, leurs psychologie est très bien travaillée et ils nous offrent tout un panel d'émotions que l'ont ressent à travers la lecture car naître et vivre sous l'eau change les manières de vivre. Les personnages secondaires suivent le même schéma que les principaux et permettent au récit de se mettre en place doucement.
La fin m'a clairement laissé un goût d'inachevé et j'ai hâte de lire le second tome pour découvrir se que cache ce fameux journal et surtout si nos personnages vont réussir à atteindre l'objectif suprême.


En bref, un SF thriller angoissant et anxiogène avec des personnages attachants. Des intrigues qui forment un tout et l'espoir de l'Humanité repose sur Amarante.

Une belle découverte déconcertante et je remercie l’auteur de me l’avoir fait découvrir.
Après un cataclysme qui a ravagé la terre, les survivants vivent désormais sur une arche sous-marine. Entre post apocalyptique et dystopie, l’auteur nous fait découvrir une société qui a su se recréer.
Nous faisons la connaissance de Skyler médecin et d’Emily sa meilleure amie, qui se trouvent confronter à une drôle de maladie se propageant aléatoirement. Dans le même temps une machination se trame entre le commandement du navire et les dissidents archéens.
Au fil de la lecture on comprend mieux ce monde, les règles, on apprend également ce qui s’est passé. C’est une histoire pleine de rebondissements, d’actions, moult trahisons et des questions laissées sans réponse, l’auteur y insuffle un rythme soutenu et on ne peut pas lâcher sa lecture.
C’est très bien construit, les personnages principaux sont intéressants, leurs psychologies bien dessinées. Il y a beaucoup d’émotions et je me suis attachée très facilement à Skyler et Emily. Les dissidents disséminés un peu partout sont un mystère relativement opaque, on les suit sans les suivre et ils nous intriguent fortement.
L’univers entièrement créé par l’auteur est foisonnant, bien travaillé, riche en détails mais ce n’est pas lourd, ça facilite la compréhension du récit dans sa globalité.
Les révélations au fur et à mesure des pages nous emmènent au nœud de l’intrigue et lèvent peu à peu le voile. Mais ce qui est bien c’est que tout n’est pas mis à nu et ça guide le lecteur vers le tome suivant. Non seulement l’auteur a beaucoup d’imagination mais il maitrise aussi avec brio le thriller SF ! C’est angoissant limite anxiogène. C’est un huis clos du fait que l’histoire se déroule sur une arche au fond des mers, il y a cependant beaucoup de personnages et d’informations à assimiler, c’est ardu au début ensuite on est tellement pris dans le récit qu’on veut connaitre la suite. L’auteur est quand même un peu « sadique » car il nous laisse macérer et distille les informations au compte-goutte.
Les chapitres sont courts offrant une force indéniable à la narration, la plume est fluide, addictive. David M. Snow possède un vrai talent des mots, le tout s’imbrique parfaitement bien et propose une œuvre complète où les thèmes principaux, le pouvoir, la manipulation, le dogme et l’asservissement reflètent la lutte antédiluvienne entre les Hommes.
J’ai apprécié ce roman car la trame est originale et l’auteur a l’art et la manière de nous amener où il veut sans que le lecteur ne sache à l’avance ce qui se trame, c’est un tortionnaire des mots. L’effet vérité est bien mené et quand les masques tombent ce n’est pas toujours joli joli. La fin nous laisse sur notre faim si je puis dire et mon appétit aiguisé va me conduire tout droit vers le deuxième tome !
Si le mélange thriller, science-fiction, dystopie saupoudré de post-apocalyptique vous tente je vous conseille de vous plonger dans les eaux troubles de « Amarante ».

This book takes place more than 100 years after a flood so big that all the world is covered with water, people live inside the ark, a kind of a city submarine that will bring the people to the promised land, or so the legends tell, and you know what, this book has a great story, good characters, even if sometimes they are ill advised, no one is 100% right all the time, and a great world building, I couldn’t put the book down and now I want to read the north star, that is the second book on the series. People inside the Ark are know for their family name and most still live in the same social category that they (family) had when they embarked, so there’s people living way better than others so a revolution is slowly brewing… yes, we could say that there’s a beast in the belly of the Ark. We have two main points of view, Skyler and Emily, Skyler comes from a good family, not on the top of the Ark but also not on the bottom and he works as a doctor in the ark, Emily in the other hand she is a daughter of a traitor, and she has to work twice as hard, she works as an interrogator for the prison. They both have a friend (Chris), that if only for Skyler opinion I would think he was a jerk, but through Emily eyes we can see much more of him and even like him. I really want to know more of him in the second volume, and I hope to have someone come back again.

In this book made me remember some games that I enjoyed a lot before, you have memory spheres that work almost as the ones in final fantasy 10, but in here we are lead to believe this only works if done soon after death, to keep people memories, so that is something that will connect with fans of video games and another detail, took me to resident evil code veronica, but I wont spoil, well if you played the game perhaps you will guess what I mean, when you do get there in the book hahah.

You have kind of an open ending, and there's missing people, things that you’ll want answered in a next volume, but that didn’t put me off of the story I really recommend this one.

Amarante est la saga idéale pour ceux qui aiment les univers de SF post-apocalyptique. Dans cette trilogie, nous allons suivre les personnages de Skyler et Emilie, leur lieu de vie est assez particulier car ce qui reste de la population humaine vit dans une arche, sous l'eau. La vie de nos chers protagonistes au sein de cette Arche est loin d'être paisible puisque les habitants faut face à un syndrome qui se répand et qui tue la population. Mais d'où vient ce Syndrome ? Comment l'éradiquer ? La population serait-elle en train de devenir folle à force d'être enfermée dans cette Arche ? En plus de cela, un groupe de rebelles semble vouloir changer l'ordre établit sur l'arche et souhaite un retour à la vie extérieure. Ce rêve est-il seulement une utopie ou bien peut-il devenir réalité ? 🤔

L' auteur nous plonge dans un univers où le monde a été engloutit par l'eau, on a d'ailleurs un petit aperçu de la vie urbaine d'autrefois à travers les protagonistes qui voient par exemple des bouts d'immeubles. Je vous avoue que je trouverai ça vraiment étouffant, angoissant de devoir vivre constamment sous l'eau !

En plus d'avoir une population sous-marine, nous pouvons aussi voir l'évolution scientifique / technologique avec un concept que j'ai beaucoup aimé : celui des sphères de mémoire. Celles-ci servent à préserver les souvenirs d'une personne décédée et permettent aux proches de revivre certains souvenirs à travers leurs yeux. J'avoue que j'aurais bien aimé pouvoir revivre certains souvenirs de cette façon, c'est très original !

En tout cas, j'ai vraiment beaucoup aimé cette lecture tout comme j'avais adoré celle du préquel, les pages défilent sans que l'on s'en rende compte ! J'ai bien aimé avoir la possibilité de suivre deux points de vues, car bien qu'ils soient meilleurs amis, les personnages prennent des chemins tellement différents et nous permettent d'en savoir plus sur cette fameuse Arche. Je me demande ce qu'il va se passer par la suite...

Pour ce nouveau Service de Presse, j'ai pu découvrir un genre que je ne lis pas trop : la science-fiction, et en plus : sous l'eau ! Pour quelqu'un qui n'aime pas se baigner si elle ne voit pas le fond, c'était osé.

Ce qui m'a attirée en lisant le résumé d'Amarante, c'est le côté huis clos dystopique, puisqu'on se retrouve à bord de l'Arche, un vaisseau un peu futuriste où se retrouvent les survivants du Déluge.

On suit plusieurs personnages comme Skyler, jeune médecin ou encore Emily, qui travaille à la sécurité. Eux n'ont jamais connu la surface mais ils mettent tout en œuvre pour faire perdurer l'équilibre très fragile à bord de l'Arche, ce qui n'est pas un long fleuve tranquille (hahaha t'as vu blague aquatique rapport au fait qu'ils sont sous l'eau 🙈)
Entre un virus mystérieux qui rend les gens fous et suicidaires, et les Dissidents qui souhaitent renverser le pouvoir en place, nos personnages principaux se retrouvent, malgré eux, à devoir choisir un camp.

J'ai passé un super moment, malgré un début laborieux car il a fallu se faire à l'univers post-apocalyptique et aux divers éléments nouveaux (les sphères de mémoires, Emily et son "pouvoir"...), mais j'ai été prise par le rythme et les retournements de situation !
C'est assez difficile d'en dire plus sans spoiler, mais la fin nous donne juste envie de continuer pour comprendre ce qui arrive à chacun.

🐟 À la fin de ma lecture, je me retrouve avec pas mal de questions sur le fonctionnement de l'Arche et les débuts de cette société, questions auxquelles je trouverai peut-être des réponses dans le prequel...

Amaranth is a story about after the world ends and the survivors are living on arks. After years of living on this Ark, things start coming to a head. There is a mysterious illness and feuding among different groups of people and that’s when this story really picks up.

I don’t want to say too much about the story because after a short introduction, it really takes off and does not stop. This is my favorite kind of science fiction because we are in one location and everything is unfolding and secrets are being revealed. You don’t know who to trust or what is about to happen.

This book is written from two perspectives and in third person present tense which lends itself to being a quick read where you aren’t sure if even the main characters are safe!

I really enjoyed this book, especially for a debut! It is a very solid four star book for me. The only issue I have is there is just so much going on that sometimes, it gets a little confusing. I’m sure the second book will help explain more so I am excited to continue on!

The family secrets, political drama, and factions within factions give Game of Thrones a run for its money.

100 years after a global flood inundated the world, the last inhabitants of Earth live in a giant submarine called the Ark, traveling the world ocean until they can live on the surface again. But things are breaking down. Not just the city ship, but the government, the belief systems, their whole way of life. The Paragon tries to hold things together, led by a Creator-fearing Commander Hawk who only wants to save Believers, while the Brotherhood rebels want to save everyone. And then there are the Mavericks, illegals who live in the bowels of the ship. All are vying for control of the Ark.

Emily, Skyler, and Tessa are well-thought-out main characters, and there is a good supporting cast as well. And not everyone is who they appear to be.

Talk about a captive audience…

I read the prequel, yet I still wasn’t prepared for the enormity of the situation.
Can you imagine being submerged underwater? For generations?
With people dying from some kind of fatal yet unknown medical disorder? Named the ‘Fairy Syndrome’…?
With passengers split between staying below and going to ground? Based on religious principles (which are personal rather than communal)?

If you’re into Sci-Fi with a difference then this one for you, it’s like Noah’s Ark modernized with a lot more passengers. Sub-mariners as opposed to surface vessel crews, part dystopian and part post-apocalyptic. Having read it I’m still unsure who the good guys are as there are a lot of conflicting events. Hopefully the next in series might clear that one up for me.

A great discovery!

Received as a review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Amaranth continues the vast complex puzzle that begins with Memory of Flower as life aboard The Ark is never one of peace, especially as Skylar Goldberg is chasing an illness wrecking the lives of those aboard. Emily Bates is a lovely, colorful character to follow as here past is a haunting piece of narrative brilliance that shapes her future aboard the ship as she needs to unravel why stowaways on the Ark matter as they do. Survival is everything... and it's always means having challenge reality and illusions that can make an world of isolation bearable. Author David M. Snow pulls out all the stops with his adventure series, as this characters shine against the darkness and its vulnerabilities. Highly recommended.

I did enjoy this short story! Much more than the prequel! I did literally read it in one sitting. Quite a good pace, interesting ideas for end of the world & end of life! I am curious to see where this will go! I hope to read the next part do recommend this quick read!

Inside the huge underwater Ark, the very young doctor Skyler Goldberg watched his patient dying.
He watched the computers carefully.

Skyler was ready to collect the last moments of the dying man's life in a glass sphere.
The experiment was in progress...

An excellent dystopian universe that tells the incredible story of a group of survivors locked in a gigantic underwater Ark that has been roaming the oceans for over a hundred years.

The author's writing is precise and detailed.
It takes the reader, with a slow rhythm, into a very confined and oppressive mysterious universe.

We follow the adventures of Skyler and Emily in an uncompromising dystopian universe.

Personally, I was the first surprise to find myself totally immersed in this very gripping story.

I can't wait to read the sequel and I recommend it!

A story of what happens when climate change ravages our Earth, and the people invent a huge ship to save many citizens, the relationships and a mysterious pandemic strikes as mavericks take over the ark!
With many different families , some founders have more privileges and benefits than others, jealousy and anarchy ensues!
A very fascinating look at a society that's crumbling with seemingly nowhere to go to save themselves; makes me wonder if it will come to pass!

Excellent storyline

I couldn’t believe how great this book is and how fast I got through it. Full of action, intrigue, drama, suspense and deceit throughout the book.
