TJ Joseph, a professor from Kerala, was accused of blasphemy in 2010. He was attacked and his hands were brutally chopped off by radical Islamists of PFI. In his memoir that has been translated to English recently, Joseph narrated how everyone, including his church, college, friends and neighbours, disowned him over the false allegations of blasphemy.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Joseph refused to accept that punishing the persons responsible will bring justice and asserted that religious fundamentalism is the problem.

Joseph’s memoir of the pain and suffering he endured over the false allegations of blasphemy was released in Malayalam 2020. Its English translation by Nandkumar has been recently released under the title, “A Thousand Cuts: An Innocent Question and Deadly Answers”.

Freedom of speech is one of the most important topics our world is discussing now after the attack on author Salman Rushdie. This is a book dealing with this topic.

This is the memoir of Professor T.J. Joseph, a Professor of Malayalam in a college in Kerala. The assault on him by religious fanatics is one of the most controversial events that happened in Kerala in the last decade. His hand was cut off at the wrist and thrown away to the front yard of a house on the allegation of blasphemy by a religious organization.

The author prepared a question paper for the students studying Malayalam literature in his college. He took a passage from the book Thirakathayude Reethisasthram which was mentioned as a reference book in the Malayalam literature syllabus. The book mentioned above is written by the famous award-winning film director Kunju Muhammed. He was explaining the scene in his movie Garshom where there is a conversation between an NRI person who returned from the Middle East and God. Kunju Muhammed said that he made this scene from the inspiration of a real-life Schizophrenic person who he saw talking to god. There was no name mentioned about this schizophrenic person in the book. Prof. T.J. Joseph gave him the name Muhammed.

The conversation dynamics and context of the conversation totally changed in front of many people after that. Some people interpreted it as a conversation between the Prophet and God.

We can view this situation from two angles. The first is from the angle of Prof. T.J. Joseph. He clearly mentions that he took the name from the author Kunju Muhammed name. Muhammed is also a commonly used name for Muslims in Kerala. He never thought and wanted to hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims. He also publicly apologized for his action if it hurt the religious sentiments of any people.

The second is from the angle of the religious people. We can't say they may be wrong when they criticize that a Professor with this much knowledge and experience should have thought more deeply and used a little more common sense while setting the question paper. But we also have to respect the freedom of speech of Professor T.J. Joseph in this context as he took the passage from a university-approved reference book. This was a tricky situation where the whole Kerala community took two sides and debated until some unfortunate events happened.

Whoever was right in that situation didn't matter after some terrible chain of events followed it. Professor Joseph had to go into hiding for a few days due to the threats from religious people. The police severely attacked his son to find out his father's hiding place; he was arrested by the police when he returned on account of disrupting the religious harmony. He was released from prison later. One day when he returned from church, religious fanatics attacked him. They cut his right hand. He also had to suffer multiple stab wounds. He went through multiple surgeries and physiotherapies due to it. He lost his job as a professor due to all these. He found it difficult to go for treatment as he lost his source of income. His wife suffered from severe depression after all these happened. She committed suicide. Almost all of Kerala supported him and protested against the problems he had to suffer. Many innocent people, including young kids, supported him both morally and financially with whatever they could.



My favorite three lines from this book.

“ മനുഷ്യരെല്ലാം ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്. സ്വന്തം കണ്ണിലെ മരക്കഷ്ണം കാണില്ല. അന്യന്റെ കണ്ണിലെ കരട് കാണുകയും ചെയ്യും.”

“പരിചരിക്കാനായി ഡോക്ടർമാരും നഴ്സ്മാരും മറ്റു ആശുപത്രി ജീവനക്കാരും എന്റെ അരികിൽ വർത്തിച്ചപ്പോൾ ലോക സ്വഭാവത്തിന്റെ വൈരുദ്ധ്യാത്മകതയെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് ഞാൻ ഓർത്ത് കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്. വളരെ നാളുകളുടെ പരിശ്രമത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായി ഒരു കൂട്ടം ആളുകൾ എന്നെ അപായപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇപ്പോഴാകട്ടെ വേറൊരു കൂട്ടർ എന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കാനായി തത്രപ്പെടുന്നു.”

“യുദ്ധം ജയിച്ചു പക്ഷേ രാജ്യം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. നഷ്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയവർ അതു തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞെങ്കിലെന്ന് ആശിക്കുന്നു. മതഭ്രാന്തൻമാരുടെ മനം മാറ്റത്തിനായി പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്നു.”

This book was recently awarded the Kerala Sahitya Academy award in the autobiography section. In these recent times, where freedom of speech and attack against writers is one of the most important topics of discussion, this is a book that you should never miss.

Touching memoir of his strange and painful ordeal .. !!
വാക്കിലോ, ചിന്തയിൽ പോലുമോ കടന്നുവരാത്ത ഒരു ആരോപണത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ സ്വന്തം ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതവും ഒടുവിൽ പ്രിയ സഹധർമ്മിണിയേയും നഷ്ടപെടേണ്ടിവന്ന ജോസഫ് മാഷിന്റെ ഉള്ളുലയ്ക്കുന്ന എഴുത്ത്. ആ ദിനങ്ങളെ ഇങ്ങനെ നിർമമതയോടെയും ഒട്ടൊരു ഹാസ്യാത്മകമായും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് എങ്ങനെ സമീപിയ്ക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു എന്നത് അദ്‌ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ഒപ്പം കേരളസമൂഹത്തെ കാർന്നു തിന്നുന്ന തീവ്രചിന്തകളുടെ ആധിക്യവും നമ്മെ ഞെട്ടിക്കാതെ കടന്നുപോവില്ല.

Kerala leads other Indian states on several parameters, including literacy, general education, health infrastructure and rural development. On some factors like life expectancy and sex ratio, it comes even close to western nations. However, its society is deeply divided on caste and religious lines. Kerala tops the list of people who fled India to join the Islamic State terror movement. It is also an open secret that Islamism in India is mostly financed by organizations in Kerala. However, Kerala itself has not witnessed much violent Islamist action. Like the tens of thousands of its people toiling for their livelihood in the Middle East, Kerala exports jihadi elements to other parts of India to create havoc there. It is in this background that the events mentioned in this book occur. It is the story of how Islamists physically attacked a college professor and chopped off his right palm accusing him of insulting the Prophet through a question he had set in an internal test paper. The incident is not a novel one as we continue to see similar happenings – sometimes even more serious – almost on a daily basis in many parts of the world. What is shocking in this case is the union of the state government machinery with the Islamists in hunting down the professor who had absconded for his safety and the Christian management which dismissed him from service to please them. Having lost the sole livelihood of the family and driven to despair, the professor’s wife committed suicide. This pathetic act persuaded the management to revoke the dismissal and reinstate him two days prior to his superannuation. T J Joseph reminisces on those events in this book.

Joseph explains in detail the thought process that went in for the selection of the question in dispute. He wanted to present some matter for adding punctuation marks for B.Com students studying Malayalam as second language during their second semester. The author selected a book titled ‘Thirakkathayude Reethishastram’ (Methodology of Screenplay) by noted filmmaker P T Kunju Muhammad which was suggested as reference material by the university. There is a dialog in the book between a mad man and god which ran thus:

Mad man: “Creator, Creator”
God: “What is it, sonofabitch?”
Mad man: “A mackerel – if one cuts it – how many pieces will there be?”
God: “You dog, how many times do I have to tell you it’s three?”

Now, Joseph wanted to add a name to the mad man. Since the man calls god padachon (Creator in Malayalam) it was obvious that he was a Muslim. The professor thought of a common Muslim name that was also carried by the film maker and named the protagonist Muhammad. And all hell broke loose!

The Muslim community of Thodupuzha, where Joseph was teaching at Newman College, came out in droves to protest against what they perceived as an insult to the Prophet and blasphemy on the words attributed to god. The agitation turned violent and the college authorities suspended the professor, in effect accepting the mob’s charges as true. The police also filed a case against him for fomenting enmity among communities. Joseph left his home and remained a fugitive for a few days by which time he had hoped to arrange anticipatory bail. His plans did not materialize as his friends did not want to be seen as associating with a tainted person. He then surrendered to the police and the court remanded him to judicial custody for a few days before granting bail. His ordeal was just beginning when he came out. Three months later, a group of Islamists armed with knives and machetes waylaid his car while coming back home after attending a church service. They hacked his right palm off and inflicted several cuts on other limbs. The chopped off palm was later surgically reattached. At this point, the management dismissed him from service. When it became evident that he will not be taken back even after four years, his wife committed suicide in a fit of depression. The management of the college, which was manned by Christian priests, then relented and allowed him to rejoin on a Friday while he was to retire on Monday with the intervening days as holidays for the college. The author has made a touching narrative of the incidents that devastated his family.

What we find alarming in the whole episode is that the law enforcement of Kerala cozied up to the Islamists and made their path smooth for inflicting the punishment prescribed by Sharia law for blasphemers. When a militant organization initiated violent action on the streets, the police chased the professor without asserting facts. Joseph’s leaving the scene is also culpable since nobody was then present on the ground to explain his side of the story. The mob’s interest got weightage over anything else, even if those interests were born out of ignorance, against truth and flagrantly unethical. In addition to this, the police took the innocent professor’s son into custody and brutally tortured to make him divulge his father’s hiding place and also to force him to surrender. When Joseph was released on bail after preliminary investigation, they did not accord him any guards for protection. However, after he was assaulted and right hand hacked, he was given round-the-clock police protection in a classic instance of closing the stable door after the horse had bolted.

The police’s slovenly attitude is expectable even though it cannot be pardoned. What is totally embarrassing is the college management’s vengeful attitude. This was a Christian minority institution and the professor was a member of the same congregation. Even then, they joined the protestors in declaiming the author, became their mouthpiece and abused him. It ensured that the case was filed solely on his name and worked to create evidence by scouring the wastepaper basket and retrieving the crumpled written copy of the question paper in the author’s own hand. The management even convened a press conference and apologized to the Muslim community for wounding their religion and sensibilities. This in fact added fuel to the fire and protestors turned rioters. The author does not mention any antecedents that might have prompted the priestly management to behave in this fashion. Joseph claims that his actions as a professor was impeccable and he had engendered no issue for the relationship to fray. However, in the second part of the book in which he reminisces on the events prior to the incident, he does not speak anything about his experience with the management. There is a chapter on his interview for the post of lecturer, but a deep silence ensues thereafter. The author does not seem to be very forthcoming on this point.

The book is very absorbing to read and reminds the readers of the disastrous consequences attached to seemingly trivial mistakes. It also provides warning signs on the radicalization of Muslim youths and the government’s tacit acceptance and passive encouragement in the hope of securing vote banks. No cultural leader or intellectual in Kerala voiced his or her protest. No author has used the name ‘Muhammad’ for their characters thereafter. The author’s deep roots in farming and his family’s early espousal of agriculture is a model to all. The translation by Nandakumar is a very fine example of conveying the ideas without missing any of the nuances though on a few occasions, it appears too pedantic.

The book is highly recommended.

നെടുവീർപ്പുകളോടെ വായിച്ച്‌ അവസാനിപ്പിച്ച ഒരു പുസ്തകം, ഗദ്ഗദങ്ങൾ ചിലപ്പോഴെല്ലാം കണ്ണീരായി വീണിരുന്നു. സ്വന്തം കഥ, അതും ഒരു പാട്‌ യാതനകളുള്ളത്‌ ഇത്രയും ലാഘവത്തോടെ മാഷ്‌ എങ്ങനെ എഴുതി എന്നതാണ്‌ ഞാൻ ചിന്തിച്ചത്‌.

As the story progresses you really start to wish all this was fiction and such cruelties were a figment of one’s imagination. But the autobiography is a real and painful tale of Prof. T.J. Joseph whose innocent questions indeed led to deadly answers. The Malayalam professor wouldn’t have expected his genuine efforts to make a literature paper interesting by quoting from a stage play would be misinterpreted and trigger the extremists who went to the extent of chopping his hand. One could only imagine the trauma he had to relive while penning down his tragic story for us.

Reality hits hard when we realise Prof. T.J. Joseph was just a normal man like us, going on about his day-to-day life, taking care of the family, giving his best to the students and being a model citizen, and how an accusation of blasphemy ruined his life forever. And how we could be also one such victim for no fault of ours.

It begins to haunt us when we put ourselves in his shoes. How would you react when everything from your life is snatched away and you have to run away from home just to keep your loved ones out of the trouble. It’s a harrowing tale of how his family suffered along with him, and how despite the evident threat to his life, the police chose to ignore. And all this could’ve been prevented if the police protection he got after the horrible incident had been provided earlier. This can give you a picture: All he had to his protection was a machete used to cut jackfruit.

The Professor with his humour-laced storytelling, decided to have a Part Two in the book that takes back to his life pre-incident, and shows us the contrast in his life, from a farming background to a renowned professor. What’s more saddening is as you traverse with the professor’s along the story is when you learn that he stood against everything that he was accused of, as every person in academia should be.

The book has so much to offer, you get to learn how the diocese functions, the state of our jails, the true colours of the men in khaki, how an institution can throw you to the wolves in order to protect themselves, and how the world is not really a cruel place. His words are not one that seeks pity, but an upfront narration of all that he went through. To quote himself, the one thing that he kept him going and the book was his sense of humour.

തൊടുപുഴ ന്യൂമാൻ കോളേജിൽ പ്രൊഫസർ ആയിരുന്ന tj ജോസഫിൻറെ കഥ കേരള മനസാക്ഷിയെ തന്നെ ഞെട്ടിച്ചതായിരുന്നു. അദേഹത്തിന്റെ തുറന്നെഴുത്താണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. ഒരു ആത്മകഥയെ വളരെ മനോഹരമായ രീതിയിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. പക്ഷെ ഇതിലെ കഥാഭാഗങ്ങൾ നമ്മളെ കണ്ണീരണിയിക്കും.

വളരെയധികം വിശദമായി ഒരോ കാര്യങ്ങളും ഒരോരുത്തരുടെയും പേരുകൾ പോലും എഴുതിയ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ അക്രമകാരികളുടെ പേര് പോലും ഒഴിവാക്കി അവരോട് കരുണ കാണിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ. പക്ഷെ കൈവെട്ടിയ അക്രമകാരികളെക്കാളും കൈവിട്ട സഭയാണ് അദേഹത്തെ നന്നായി കരയിച്ചത് എന്ന് നമുക്ക് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെ കാണാം. അക്രമകാരികളെക്കാളും അക്രമം ചെയ്താൽ ഞങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും തന്നെ ചെയ്യില്ല എന്ന് ഉറപ്പ് കൊടുത്ത കോളേജ് മാനേജ്‌മെന്റ് ആണ് കൂടുതൽ ക്രൂരത കാണിച്ചത്.
തീർച്ചയായും വായിക്കേണ്ട കൃതി. ഒരു നർമ്മ ബോധം ഈ കൃതിയുടെ ദുരന്തപരാവശ്യത്തെ മയപ്പെടുത്താനായി ബോധപൂർവമോ അല്ലാതെയോ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഭാര്യയുടെ വിയോഗം വിവരിക്കുമ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൂടെ നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സും ഇടറും.

Professor T.J.Joseph’s poignant & heartrending chronicles, A Thousand Cuts, brings to life the horrors of religious fanaticism of how it invades & shatters every aspect of an ordinary man’s peaceful life due to minor controversy over a name. After being wrongly accused of blasphemy, he faces social rejection to dismissal to brutal terror attack to angst-ridden family to financial fatigue. Finally to gain what was his last hope he pays a price to dear to him. The book is proof of T.J.Joseph’s unflinching courage to still speak out against such extremism. When fundamental rights of its citizen are violated the very system which had the authority to protect its citizen seemed more inclined to appease its religious fundamentalists leaving him with a million cuts which even time can’t heal.Voicing such records is imperative towards building freer societies. A must read!!

പ്രതിസന്ധികളെ നമുക്ക് എങ്ങിനെ വേണമെങ്കിലും നേരിടാം , ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് , ഭയന്ന് കൊണ്ട് , കരഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് , എന്നിരുന്നാലും ഏതറ്റം വരെ ...?? ഒരു സമയം കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ നമുക്ക് നമ്മളെ തന്നെ നഷ്ടമാകില്ലേ , അതും നാം ഒരു തെറ്റും ചെയ്യാതെ അനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്ന പ്രതിസന്ധികൾ ആണെങ്കിലോ ....

മത ഭ്രാന്തന്മാര് കൈകൾ വെട്ടിയരിഞ്ഞപ്പോളും അദ്ദേഹം ആ അതിജീവനത്തിൽ പിടിച്ചു നിന്ന് ജീവിതം നയിച്ചു . പക്ഷെ ഈ പുസ്തകം തുറന്നു തന്ന നേർകാഴ്ച എന്നത് കൈകൾ വെട്ടിയപ്പോൾ അല്ല അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ജീവിതം നശിച്ചത് ,ഒരുപറ്റം മതഭ്രാന്തന്മാർ കൈകൾ കൊണ്ടുപോയെങ്കിലും ജീവിതം കൊണ്ടുപോയത് മറ്റൊരു പറ്റം ശുഭ്രകൂട്ടർ ആയിരുന്നു

മതഭ്രാന്ത് നശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സാഹിത്യ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം , പ്രതിച്ഛായ സംരക്ഷണത്തിന് വേണ്ടി എന്ത് നെറികേടിനും സംരക്ഷിക്കേണ്ട മതലയങ്ങളും മതാചാരങ്ങളും , ഇവയെല്ലാം നേര്കാഴ്ചയുടെ ഓരോ കണ്ണികൾ ആണ് , എല്ലാം കഴിഞ്ഞു സ്വന്തം ഭാര്യയുടെ മരണം , നിർവികാരമായ അടക്കി പിടിക്കാനും , തന്നെ എല്ലാ വിധത്തിലും വ്രണപ്പെടുത്തിയ സർവരോടും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ക്ഷമിക്കാനും കഴിഞ്ഞു എന്നത് ചിന്താതീതം ആണ് , അതിലൂടെ നാളെയുടെ തലമുറകൾക്കു അൽപ്പമെങ്കിലും വെളിച്ചം പര്കാരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം .

A book that everyone should read.

A true account of how the religion and it's blind followers and clergy destroyed a normal religious man and his family. The passive terrorism towards Joseph and family by Christian clergy made me more frustrated,sad and angry than the actual act of terrorism by Muslim extremists.

ചോദ്യപേപ്പർ വിവാദം ഉണ്ടായ കാലത്ത് ജോസഫ് മാഷിനോട് വെറുപ്പ് തോന്നിയിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ കൈവെട്ട് കേസ് നടന്നപ്പോൾ ഒരു ശതമാനം പോലും ആ പ്രവൃത്തിയെ അംഗീകരിക്കാൻ മനസ്സനുവദിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. ഇന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആത്മകഥ വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ ആണ് യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിവാദ ചോദ്യം യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഇത്രെയും മതസ്പര്ധ ഉണ്ടാകാൻ പ്രേരകമ��യിരുന്നോ എന്നു ചിന്തിക്കുന്നത്. സ്വന്തം കൈവെട്ടിയ പ്രതികളെ അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നത് മത തീവ്രവാതികൾ എന്നാണ്. അതു ഞാൻ കൂടി ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന മുസ്ലിം സമുദായത്തിലെ തീവ്രവാദികൾ ആയിരുന്നിട്ടും അദ്ദേഹം ഇസ്‌ലാം മതത്തെയോ മുസ്ലികളെയോ ആക്ഷേപിക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹം ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. മാത്രവുമല്ല പലരിൽ നിന്നും ഉണ്ടായ നല്ല അനുഭവങ്ങളും അദ്ദേഹം പങ്കുവെക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

സമാധാനമായി മുന്നോട്ടു പോയിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ഒരാളുടെ ജീവിതം ഒരൊറ്റ ദിവസം കൊണ്ട് തല കീഴ്മേൽ മറിയുന്നത് നിസ്സാരമായ ഒരു ചോദ്യത്തിലാണ്. തുടർന്നങ്ങോട്ട് അദ്ദേഹവും കുടുംബവും അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന വേദനകളും കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളും കുറച്ചൊന്നുമല്ല ഞാനെന്ന വായനക്കാരനെ അസ്വസ്ഥനാക്കിയത്. ഒടുവിൽ കുറെ കാലത്തെ കേസും നിയമയുദ്ധയും കഴിഞ്ഞു നിരപരാധിയായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെടുകയും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട ജോലി തിരികെ ലഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ഭാര്യയുൾപ്പെടെ പലതും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വാക്കുകളിൽ,
"യുദ്ധം ജയിച്ചു, പക്ഷെ രാജ്യം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു"

ഇന്നത്തെ കാലത്ത് മത വികാരം എന്നു പറയുന്നത് ശെരിക്കും ഒരു തീകൊള്ളിയാണ്. ആളുകൾ മത വികാരം മാറ്റിവെച്ചു മത ബോധം ഉള്ളവരായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഈ ലോകം ഇത്ര സുന്ദരമായേനെ.

ഇതാണ് മതനിന്ദ ആരോപിച്ച ചോദ്യം. ഒരു അധ്യാപകന്റെ ഇരുകൈകളും ഛേദിക്കൻ മാത്രം ഇതിൽ എന്താണ് അപാകതയെന്ന് ഓരോ വായനക്കാർക്കും ചിന്തിച്ച് നിഗമനങ്ങളിൽ എത്താവുന്നതാണ്. ശരീരം വെട്ടിമുറിച്ച മതഭ്രാന്തന്മാരേക്കാൾ ക്രൂരമായി പെരുമാറിയത് മാനേജ്‌മന്റ് ആണെന്നാണ് എൻ്റെ പക്ഷം. വേദനയോടെ അല്ലാതെ ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു തീർക്കാൻ നിങ്ങൾക്കാവില്ല. എല്ലാം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിട്ടും ആത്മവിശ്വാസത്തോടെ തുന്നിച്ചേർത്ത കൈകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വീണ്ടും സമൂഹത്തിലേക്ക് തൂലികയിലൂടെ കൂടെ കടന്നു വരാൻ അദ്ദേഹം കാണിച്ച ആർജ്ജവത്തെ നമിക്കുന്നു.

ജീവിതത്തെക്കാൾ വലിയ ഫിക്ഷൻ വേറെയില്ല എന്നു ഒരിക്കൽ കൂടെ തെളിയിക്കുകയാണ് ഈ കൃതി. ഒരു ചെറിയ സംഭവം ജീവിതത്തെ ഒന്നാകെ എങ്ങനെ ദുരിത പർവ്വത്തിലേക്ക് തള്ളിയിടുന്നെന്നതിന്റെ ആവിഷ്കാരം. അങ്ങേയറ്റം വേദനാജനകമായ അനുഭവത്തെ നർമ്മത്തിന്റെ മേമ്പൊടി ചേർത്താണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. അത് വായനക്കാരനെ പുസ്തകത്തോട് ഏറെ ചേർത്ത് നിർത്താൻ സഹായിക്കുന്നു. എങ്കിലും എഴുത്തുകാരന് ഇതെങ്ങനെ സാധിക്കുന്നു എന്നത് ആശ്ചര്യം ഉളവാക്കുന്നു. കിരീടവും, ചെങ്കോലും ആകാശദൂതും ഒക്കെ നർമ്മത്തിൽ പൊതിഞ്ഞ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ എന്ന് സങ്കൽപ്പിച്ചു നോക്കൂ. ഈ രചനാ ശൈലി ടി ജെ ജോസഫ് എന്ന മലയാളം പ്രൊഫസർ മികച്ച ഒരു എഴുത്തുകാരൻ കൂടെ ആണെന്ന് അടിവരയിടുന്നു. തന്റെ കൈ വെട്ടി മാറ്റിയവരോടല്ല , തന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തെ മുറിവേല്പിച്ചവരോടുള്ള എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ പ്രതിഷേധം കൂടെയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. തീർച്ചയായും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട പുസ്തകം

A Thousand Cuts by Professor T J Joseph is a horrific yet heroic autobiography describing the question paper controversy which started with an innocent question which was prepared by Professor Joseph for the internal exams of students of his college at Kerala. This book is a detailed account of the background of that controversy, events which started when the question paper was leaked outside and which can be said an inadvertent mistake was termed and turned into blasphemy. His innocent question, which should not have been gone outside the college building, somehow got leaked and what followed was a horrible events which created a havoc in the life of the professor and his family.
The book goes into detail how the controversial question found its place in the internal examination and how the professor become the target of religious fanatics who without understanding the question or context termed it as an insult to their religion. The matter could have been dealt with if the professor was given chance to make his stand clear and if the management was brave enough to give this chance to the professor. An explanation with an apology and some common sense were the simple solution to this issue which went out of control due to gross mishandling by the college’s management.
The professor acted on the advice of the management and decided to go underground, this made the already bad situation a worst one, especially for the professor and his family. They were being harassed by the fanatics, police and media. The fanatics wanted his head, both literally and metaphorically and the management which should have supported the professor turned against him and dismissed him from the service. The whole family suffered unbearable losses during the long period of struggle. The professor has tried to mix this horrific tale with some black and dry humour which shows his maturity. The professor and his family had to undergo a lot of physical pain, mental agony and financial troubles for a very long period of time. A Thousand cuts is a very apt name for this autobiographical account.
When we complete this book, we feel ashamed to be part of a society which has lost common sense and which resorts to violence at a drop of a hat. This book also shows us the danger of religious fundamentalism and bowing to fanatics. Let’s hope that what the professor had to suffer must be an exception and does not become a rule in our Indian society. I will conclude by saluting the spirit, wisdom and courage of the professor. He really has inculcated and lived by the values which are propagated by the likes of Jesus Christ and Mahatma Gandhi.

മികച്ച ആത്മകഥയ്ക്കുള്ള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി പുരസ്കാരം ലഭിച്ചതിൻ്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലും ആയിടയ്ക്ക് സലോമിയെയും ഉദ്ധരിച്ച് കൊണ്ടുള്ള ചില ഇൻസ്റ്റാഗ്രാം പോസ്റ്റുകൾ കണ്ടതിൻ്റെ കൗതുകത്തിലുമാണ് ടി.ജെ.ജോസഫ് സാറിൻ്റെ കഥ വായിക്കാൻ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്. കേരള ചരിത്രത്തിൽ തന്നെ ഇത്ര തന്നെ വിവാദപരമായതും കേരളീയരുടെ മതനിരപേക്ഷബോധത്തെയും മതസഹിഷ്ണുതയെയും ആകമാനം പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലുമാഴ്ത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞ ഈ അതിദാരുണ ജീവിതാനുഭവങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി മുൻപേ അറിവില്ലാതിരുന്നതിന് സ്വയമേ കഷ്ടം തന്നെ തോന്നി.

Incidentally, the day I received the book, was the 12th anniversary of the incident, around which the book is based. I read a twitter thread on it, in the day, towards the end of which I got this book.
I never heard of it before, if I say in a nutshell, it shocked me, made me ponder a lot about where are we heading as a society.

At the risk of giving spoilers, it is pertinent to mention, that this book is an autobiographical account of a professor whose hand was severed by fanatics, blaming him for blasphemy. He talks of how his life was before, how he saw this incident and how it changed his life forever. Interestingly though, it is not written to gain sympathy, it is written to bring to light, you will feel empathetic of course, but would also appreciate how the professor dealt. Forgiveness, acceptance and moving forward being one of the key messages, yet it emphasizes how as a society, we must reflect.

Read, for knowing a common man's life, his struggle, for a detailed account of life changing journey, for a gripping memoir.

വായിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ജോസഫ് സാറിനെ ഒന്നു പോയി കാണാൻ തോന്നുന്നു.
തീർത്തും നിർവികാരമായി സ്വന്തം അനുഭങ്ങളെ ജോസഫ് സാർ വിവരിക്കുമ്പോൾ എങ്ങനെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അതു സാധിക്കുന്നതെന്നു അതിശയപ്പെട്ടു പോകുന്നു. അതേസമയം അനുഭവങ്ങളുടെ തീഷ്ണതയെയും തീവ്രതയെയും മനോഹരമായ ശൈലിയിലൂടെ സഹൃദയരിലേക്കെത്തിക്കാനും മാഷിന് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. നര്മബോധവും ആത്മവിശ്വാസവുമാണ് പല വിഷമഘട്ടങ്ങളെയും തരണം ചെയ്യാൻ സാറിനെ പ്രാപ്തനാക്കിയതെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു.

ആത്മകഥയാണെങ്കിലും ഒരു നോവൽ വായിക്കുന്ന വായനാനുഭവം ഈ പുസ്തകം തരുന്നുണ്ട്. Sub heading തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നതിൽ കാണിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ശുഷ്‌കാന്തി സ്തുത്യർഹം തന്നെ. വായനക്കാരനെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്നതാണ് ഓരോ സബ് ഹെഡിങ്ങും. ഒന്നാം ഭാഗം വായിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ പുസ്തകം മുഴുവനായി വായിച്ച ഫീൽ ഉണ്ടായതിനാൽ 100 പേജുകളോളം വരുന്ന രണ്ടാം ഭാഗം വായിക്കാൻ അധികം താല്പര്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. അൽപം മടിയോട് കൂടെ വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയെങ്കിലും രണ്ടാം ഭാഗത്തിലെ പല സന്ദർഭങ്ങളും ജോസഫ് സാർ എന്ന മനുഷ്യനെ കൂടുതൽ അടുത്തറിയാൻ സഹായിച്ചു.

മലയാളസാഹിത്യത്തിന് വളരെയധികം സംഭാവന ചെയ്യാൻ ജോസഫ് സാറിനു കഴിയട്ടെ എന്നു പ്രത്യാശിക്കുന്നു.

A Thousand Cuts is an honest memoir by a man, a college professor who went through a lot in life because hardliner Muslims felt Mr. TJ Joseph set a blasphemous question for his student's midterm literature question paper.

Without seeking to know the meaning or interpretation of this question extremists and religious fanatics created a huge brouhaha that led to arrest and prison time for this hapless professor who has been a lawful citizen throughout his life. This book makes the reader frustrated with Kerala's law enforcement system, the police try to receive a bribe from a jobless professor by not offering the basic kit for an inmate, and the bigger suns of beaches are the management who did not stand by the professor during the ordeal or not even help him by reinstating him as a professor at the end of this trial.

This book makes all of its readers think about being a staunch follower of faith and how we all should be kind to others in times of trial. And most important point is that a little bit of humor helps while maneuvering through the vicissitudes of life.

The extent to which humans are ready to hurt each other and feel justified for it scares me more than horror stories. This well written novel portrays one such incident. I haven't read the original Malayalam version (Attupokatha Ormakal), so I can't say whether the translation did it justice but it was pretty good in my opinion. This one tells a bloodcurling true story which is shocking but sadly not surprising considering the fact that Religion owns people in India. I'd recommend this book any day.

When Islamic fundamentalists chopped off the hands of Prof. T.J. Joseph for allegedly insulting the prophet of Islam in a question paper set by him, this Malayalam professor from a nondescript Kerala town was catapulted into global infamy. What followed the question paper controversy were a series of catastrophes that can only be compared to a Greek tragedy. A case was registered against him for disturbing communal harmony; he was arrested and put into jail. The college authorities suspended him and after a farcical inquiry expelled him from the job. Meanwhile the religious fanatics chopped off his hands. Ostracized by one and all and facing severe financial crisis, the professor's wife fell into depression and committed suicide. After nearly half a decade of legal struggles, Prof. Joseph was exonerated and got his job back. Through all these struggles Prof Joseph displayed tremendous courage and equanimity. This book graphically reconstructs his struggles. Prof. Joseph nurtures no malice or ill-will towards anyone. He has only charity towards all his antagonists. The message apart, this is a beautifully written book and is an asset to the genre of Malayalam autobiography. Reading this book, one can understand, what a worthy teacher, Prof Joseph was.

കഷ്ടകാലത്തെ ഒട്ടും വികാരാധീനനായി സമീപിക്കാതെ യുകിപരമായും തർക്കപരമായ അവബോധത്തോടെ എടുക്കുന്ന പ്രൊഫസറെ നമുക്ക് ഈ പുസ്‌തകത്തിൽ കാണാം. അപൂർണനായ മനുഷ്യനായ തന്റെ പോരായ്മകളെയും ദുര്ബലതയെയും ഒട്ടും മറയ്ക്കാതെ തന്നെ തുറന്നു കാട്ടാനും അദ്ദേഹം ശ്രെമിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പല കാര്യങ്ങളിലും നർമത്തിന്റെ വശങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്താൻ ശ്രെമിക്കുകയും അതുവരെ ദുർഘട അവസ്ഥകളെ നിഷ്പ്രയാസം തരണം ചെയ്യാനും ശ്രെമിക്കുന്നത് വഴി നമുക്കും ആ ഒരു ചിന്താശൈലിയുടെ സാധ്യത പകർന്നു തരുന്നു.

വളരെ വിഷമത്തിലും മനംമടുപ്പിലും എന്നെ എത്തിക്കും എന്ന് പേടിച്ചാണ് ഈ ��ുസ്തം ഞാൻ വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ, എനിക്ക് അതിനേക്കാൾ വിഷമഘട്ടങ്ങളെ മറികടക്കാൻ ഉള്ള ഒരു മാനസിക ധൈര്യവും യുക്തിയും പകർന്നു തരുന്ന അനുഭവം ആയിരുന്നു ഈ പുസ്‌തകം.

This is probably the darkest and the most depressing book that I have read in the last few years(excluding the Rape of Nanking).


At the heart of this book lies the horrific incident of a professor's hand being brutally severed.

However, through this personal tragedy, Joseph paints a much broader canvas or Pain, Anger, Hope and Consequentialism. Religious extremism, intolerance, political machinations, and the failures of the justice system intertwine within the pages of this book.

It goes without saying that Mr Joseph represents hope and probably the best of what humanit is capable of.

2010 ലെ ഒരു ഓർമയാണ്..കോട്ടയത്ത് കാരനായ ഒരു സുഹൃത്തുമായിട്ട് ഞാൻ സംസാരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ സാന്ദർഭികമായി മുഹമ്മദ് എന്ന പേരിനെ പറ്റി എന്തറിയാം എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞ മറുപടി മുഹമ്മദ് എന്നാൽ സാർവ്വത്രികമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഒരു മുസ്ലിം നാമധേയം ആണെന്നും സാധാരണഗതിയിൽ

ഒന്നാം പേരായിട്ട് മുഹമ്മദ് പൊതുവേ കാണാറുണ്ട് എന്നുമാണ്.. അവർക്കിടയിൽ ജോസഫ് എന്ന പേര് ഇതു പോലെ ആണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു ..
എന്നാൽ മുഹമ്മദ് എന്ന പേര്‌ പ്രവാചകന്റെ പേര് എന്ന ബഹുമാനത്താൽ ആണ് കുട്ടികൾക്ക് രക്ഷിതാക്കൾ നാമകരണം ചെയ്യുന്നത് എന്നു ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം തിരിച്ചു ചോദിച്ച ഒരു ചോദ്യം 'പ്രവാചകന്റെ പേര് മുഹമ്മദ് നബി എന്നല്ലേ , മുഹമ്മദ് എന്നത് സാധാരണ പോലെ ഉള്ള ഒരു ഒന്നാം പേര്‌ അല്ലെ.. പ്രവാചകൻ എന്ന്‌ കൃത്യമായി സൂചിപ്പിക്കണമെങ്കിൽ നബി എന്നു കൂടെ കൂട്ടേണ്ടേ എന്നായിരുന്നു മറുചോദ്യം . അങ്ങിനെ ആവശ്യമില്ലെന്നും മുഹമ്മദ് എന്ന് പേരിൽ ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ അതാണ് പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട പേരെന്നും ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ പിന്നെ എന്ത്‌ കൊണ്ടു അല്ലാമാ മുഹമ്മദ് ഇക്ബാൽ എന്നതിൽ മുഹമ്മദ് എന്ന പേര് പറയാതെ അല്ലാമാ ഇക്ബാൽ മാത്രമായി എന്നു തിരിച്ചു ചോദിച്ചു . മാത്രമല്ല അന്ന് ബി.ടെക് പഠിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികളിൽ മുഹമ്മദ് എന്നു ഒന്നാം പേരുള്ള കുട്ടികൾ എല്ലാം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത് അവരുടെ രണ്ടാം പേരിൽ ആണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം സൂചിപ്പിച്ചപ്പോൾ ആണ് പേര് കൊണ്ടു വിശ്വാസത്തോട് ഐക്യദാർഢ്യം കാണിക്കുന്നവരുടെ വിശ്വാസ മാനങ്ങൾ ആ വിശ്വാസികൾക്ക് മാത്രമാണ് സുപരിചിതമെന്നും മറ്റു വിശ്വാസക്കാർക്ക് കേവല പേര് എന്നതിൽ കവിഞ്ഞു അതിന്റെ വിശ്വാസപരമായ മാനങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചു അറിവില്ലായ്മ ഉണ്ടെന്നുമുള്ളതാണ് യതാർത്ഥ വസ്തുത എന്നും ഞാൻ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയത്..
ജോസഫ് എന്ന പേരിന്റെ വിശ്വാസ മൂല്യങ്ങളും അതു പോലെ തന്നെ ആണ്..
ഇസ്ലാം മത വിശാസിയായ എനിക്ക് യൂസഫ് നബിയെ അറിയുന്നത് കൊണ്ടും ആ അറിവ് ബൈബിളിലെ പഴയ നിയമത്തോട് ഏറെ കുറെ ചേർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്നത് കൊണ്ടും ആ പേരിന്റെ വിശ്വാസമൂല്യം ഞാൻ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിരുന്നു. കാരണം വിശ്വാസ ധാരകൾ കിടയിൽ വന്ന ഒരു ഏകീകരണ രൂപം കൊണ്ടു മാത്രമാണ് ഈ ഒരു അറിവ് എന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ ഉണ്ടായത് എന്നു എനിക്കുറപ്പാണ്..അല്ലെങ്കിൽ എനിക്കും ജോസഫ് സാധാരണ കാണുന്ന ഒരു ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ നാമം എന്നതിൽ കവിഞ്ഞ ചിന്തകൾ ഉണ്ടാവില്ലായിരുന്നു..

ഈ സംഭാഷണത്തിന് നിദാനമായത് ആ കാലത്തു കേരളത്തിൽ കൊടുമ്പിരി കൊണ്ട ചോദ്യപേപ്പർ വിവാദം ആണ്. ചോദ്യ കർത്താവായ ടി ജെ ജോസഫ് ഒളിവിൽ ആയിരുന്ന സമയത്താണ് ഈ സംസാരം ഉണ്ടായത്. നേരത്തെ ഞാൻ സൂചിപ്പിച്ച സുഹൃത്തിന്റെ ചിന്തകളുടെ അതേ രീതിയിൽ തന്നെ ആണ് പ്രൊഫസർ ടി ജെ ജോസഫ് തന്റെ ഭാഗം പിന്നീട് വിശദീകരിച്ചത്. .അതു കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിശദീകരണം ആദ്യം തോന്നിയ മുഷിപ്പ് മാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തു. പ്രവാചക നിന്ദ അദ്ദേഹതിന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ പോലും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല എന്നത് ഞാനറിയാതെ തന്നെ എന്റെ ചിന്തയിലെ ബോധ്യമായി മാറി. എന്നാലും അധ്യാപകൻ എന്ന നിലയിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജാഗ്രത അല്പമല്ലാത്ത രീതിയിൽ ഇല്ലാതെ പോയി എന്ന് ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോഴും വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്..(അല്ലേലും ചിലതങ്ങനെ ആണ് .ഒരു കുഴിയിൽ വീഴണം എന്നു നമ്മുടെ തലവരയിൽ ചേർത്തിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ കുഴിയുടെ വക്കിലെത്തിയാൽ എത്ര ബുദ്ധിമാനാണെങ്കിലും കുഴിയിൽ വീഴാണുള്ള വിഡ്ഢിത്തം ആ സമയത്ത് ചെയ്തിരിക്കും..).പിന്നീട് രണ്ടു മാസത്തിനു ശേഷമാണ് പ്രൊഫസർക്കെതിരെ ഉള്ള ആക്രമണവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൈപ്പത്തി വെട്ടിയതും എല്ലാം...സങ്കടത്തോടെ ആണ് ആ വാർത്തകൾ അന്ന് വായിച്ചത്...

കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസമാണ് പ്രൊഫെസ്ർ ടി ജെ ജോസഫിന്റെ അറ്റുപോകാത്ത ഓർമകൾ വായിച്ചത്. 430 ഓളം പേജ് വരുന്ന ഒരു ആത്മകഥ ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായാണ് ഒറ്റ ദിവസം കൊണ്ട് വായിച്ചു തീർക്കുന്നത്..അവർക്ക് ശ്രദ്ധക്കുറവ് ഉണ്ടായി എന്നത് സത്യമാണെങ്കിലും (അതു ഓർമകുറിപ്പിൽ പലയിടത്തായി പ്രൊഫസർ തന്നെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.എന്നു മാത്രമേല്ല കോളേജിൽ മൂല്യ ശിക്ഷണ (value education)മേലധികാരി എന്ന നിലയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം നബിയുടെ മാനവികതയെ കുറിച്ചു എഴുതിയ ലേഖനത്തെ കുറിച്ചും പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. 11ആം നമ്പർ ചോദ്യം ഇടുമ്പോൾ പ്രൊഫെസ്സറുടെ മനസ്സിൽന്റെ വിദൂരതയിൽ പോലും പ്രവാചക നിന്ദ എന്ന ഒരു വികാരം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ലെന്ന് അതിൽ നിന്നും മനസ്സിലാകും) കേരളം ചർച്ച ചെയ്ത അത്രേം പ്രശ്നം ഒന്നും ഇലയിരുന്നു.പക്ഷെ കേരളത്തിലെ മീഡിയകളും രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരും അതു ഒരു സുവർണവസരമാക്കി. അവർ കിളച്ച വിഭാഗീയതയുടെ മണ്ണിൽ വിത്തെറിഞ്ഞു പ്രൊഫെസ്സറുടെ കൈവെട്ടി അതിന്റെ ഫലം കൊയ്ത തീവ്രവാദികൾ അതു വഴി അവർ ആഗ്രഹിച്ച ഒരു വർഗീയ ധ്രുവീകരണ അന്തരീക്ഷം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതിൽ വിജയിച്ചു.. ഏറ്റവും അത്ഭുതകരമായി തോന്നിയത് കോളേജ് അധികൃതരുടെ ഇടപെടൽ ആണ്.. ടി ജെ ജോസഫിന്റെ ഓർക്ക്‌റിപ്പുകളിൽ പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്ന പ്രകാരം ആണെങ്കിൽ, ഒരു പക്ഷെ കോളേജ് അധികൃതർ വിചാരിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഈ പറഞ്ഞ ഏടാകൂടം ഒന്നുമില്ലാതെ പ്രശ്നം പരിഹരിക്കാമായിരുന്നു..

എഴുതാനുള്ള ശേഷി വലതു കയ്യിന് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട ശേഷം ഇടതു കൈ കൊണ്ട് എഴുത്തു ശീലിച്ചു എഴുതിയ ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകൾ ആണ് അറ്റുപോകാത്ത ഓർമകൾ..
ഉള്ളടക്കത്തിലേക്കു വന്നാൽ ഈ പുസ്തകം നിങ്ങൾക്ക് നല്ല വായനാനുഭവം നൽകും..എഴുതിയത് ഒരു മലയാള അധ്യാപകൻ ആയതിനാലാവും വാക്കുകൾക്കും പ്രയോഗങ്ങൾക്കും അഖ്യാനരീതിക്കും അതിന്റെതായ ഭംഗി..അതിൽ പറയുന്ന പല കാര്യങ്ങൾ വായിക്കുമ്പോഴും ഒരു പക്ഷെ എല്ലാ കോളേജ് അധ്യാപകനും ഒരേ അനുഭവങ്ങൾ ആണെന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പോകും.. വിവരിക്കുന്ന ഓരോ ഘട്ടങ്ങളിലൂടെയൊക്കെ ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും ഓരോ അധ്യാപരും കടന്നു പോയിക്കാണും.
ഒരു തിരക്കഥ പോലെ ,ഒരു മുഷിപ്പും തോന്നാതെ സമ്മിശ്ര വികാരങ്ങളോട് കൂടി ആണ് വായിച്ചത്..എന്നാൽ ആധ്യായം മുപ്പത്തിനാല് കഴിയുമ്പോൾ അറിയാതെ കണ്ണു നിറഞ്ഞു പോയി .എന്തോ മനസ്സിൽ ഒരു ഭാരം കയറിയപോലെ... തന്റെ പാതി വെള്ള പുതച്ചു ശവമാഞ്ചത്തിൽ കിടക്കുമ്പോൾ , ആ നിർജീവമായ നെറ്റിയിൽ അന്ത്യ ചുംബനം നൽകുമ്പോൾ ആ മനുഷ്യൻ അനുഭവിച്ച വേദന ഒറ്റ വരിയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതി നിര്ത്തിയെങ്കിലും ആ വരി കൊണ്ടു അനുവാചകരുടെ മനസ്സിൽ നൊമ്പരത്തിന്റെ ഒരു അണക്കെട്ടാണ് തീർത്തത്.. പിന്നീട് ദി ഹസ്ബൻഡ് ഓഫ് ലേറ്റ് സലോമി എന്ന ആധ്യായം കൂടി വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ , ഏതോ ടെലിവിഷൻ ചാനലിൽ വന്ന ടി ജെ ജോസഫിന്റെ ഒരു അഭിമുഖത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം താൻ അനുഭവിച്ച ഓരോ പ്രയാസങ്ങളും എണ്ണി എണ്ണി പറഞ്ഞു അതിലൊന്നും ഞാൻ കരഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലെന്നും എന്നാൽ തന്റെ സലോമി എന്നെ വിട്ടുപോയ ദിവസം താൻ കരഞ്ഞു പോയി എന്��ും പറഞ്ഞു വിതുമ്പുന്ന ആ മുഖമാണ് ഓർമയിൽ വന്നത് .. അവസാനം താൻ നിരപരാധി ആണെന്ന് കേസ് വിധി വന്നപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞത് ഞാൻ യുദ്ധം ജയിച്ചു.. പക്ഷെ എനിക്കെന്റെ രാജ്യം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു എന്നാണ് ..

പിൻകുറിപ്പ് : വായനക്ക് ശേഷം അറ്റുപോകാത്ത മുഴുവൻ ഓർമകളും ബോധ്യങ്ങളും എല്ലാം കൂടി കൂട്ടി വെക്കുമ്പോൾ കൈവെട്ടിയ ഭ്രാന്തന്മാരും അയലയുടെ മൂന്നു കഷ്ണങ്ങളിൽ പിതാവിനെയും പുത്രനേയും പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിനെയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു അപരവത്കരണത്തിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു പാത വെട്ടി തുറന്ന ഇടയന്മാരും എന്തു നേടി എന്ന ചോദ്യമാണ് ബാക്കി ആകുന്നത്..

ഒപ്പം മുമ്പ് ഞാൻ പഠിച്ച ഒരു പ്രവാചക ചരിത്രം കൂടി..
നാല്പത്തമത്തെ വയസ്സിലാണ് നബിതിരുമേനിക്ക് പ്രവാചകത്വം ലഭിച്ചത് . അതിനു ശേഷമാണ് മക്കയിലെ ജനങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പ്രബോധനവുമായി ഇറങ്ങിയത് .. അതു വരെ അൽ അമീൻ (സത്യസന്ധൻ)എന്നു വിളിച്ചിരുന്ന ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ആന്ന് മുതൽ മുഹമ്മദ് (സ.അ)അനഭിമിതനായി.. കാരണം അവരുടെ വിശ്വാസങ്ങൾക്കെതിരായിരുന്നു പ്രവാചകരുടെ പ്രബോധനങ്ങൾ.. പ്രവചകർക്കെതിരെ ആക്ഷേപവും ആക്രമണങ്ങളും പതിവായി. പ്രവാചകരെ വധിക്കാൻ വരെ ആസൂത്രണങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായി .ആ കാലത്തു പ്രവാചകന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിയരികരിൽ ഒരു വൃദ്ധയായ സ്ത്രീ ഒറ്റക്ക് താമസിച്ചിരുന്നു..എന്നും വൈകുന്നേരം വഴിയരികിൽ അവർ പ്രവാചകരെ കാത്തു നിൽക്കുമായിരുന്നു.. നിൽപ്പിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശം പ്രവാചകരെ ചീത്ത പറയുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു.. ഒപ്പം തന്റെ വീട് വൃത്തിയാക്കിയ മാലിന്യങ്ങൾ പ്രവാചകരുടെ ദേഹത്തു വലിച്ചെറിയുമായിരുന്നു.. തുടർച്ചയായി ഇതു ചെയ്തിട്ടും പ്രവാചകർ അവരോടു തിരിച്ചെന്നും പറയറില്ലയിരുന്നു.. അങ്ങിനെ ഒരു ദിവസം അവരെ വഴി വക്കിൽ കാണാതായി .. ഉടനെ അവർക്കെന്തു പറ്റി എന്നു അന്വേഷിച്ചു പ്രവാചകൻ അവരുടെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു പോയി നോക്കി .. അസുഖം ബാധിച്ചു അവശയായ വൃദ്ധയെ ആണ് ആണ് അവിടെ കണ്ടത്. അവർക്ക് വേണ്ട എല്ലാ പരിചരണവും നൽകി അവരുടെ വീട് വൃത്തിയാക്കി ആണ് പ്രവാചകൻ തിരിച്ചു വീട്ടിലേക്കു പോയത്.. പിന്നീട് അവരുടെ അസുഖം ഭേദമാകുന്നത് വരെ പ്രവാചകരുടെ ദിനചര്യകളിൽ ഒന്നായി ആ വൃദ്ധക്കുള്ള ശുശ്രൂഷകൾ..

ഈ കുറിപ്പ് എഴുതുമ്പോൾ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ സൽമാൻ റുഷ്ദി ഒരു തീവ്രവാദിയുടെ ആക്രമണത്താൽ ജീവനും മരണത്തിനും ഇടയിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുകയാണ്..
പ്രവാചകന്റെ പേരിൽ കൊലവിളിയും ആയി ഇറങ്ങുന്ന അരാജക വാദികൾ ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും സ്വന്തം മനസു കൊണ്ട് പ്രവചകരെ മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ എന്നു ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു പോകുകയാണ്..

ഓരോ മനുഷ്യനും ഓരോ ഇതിഹാസങ്ങളാണ് എന്ന് ഒരിക്കലൊരിടത്ത് ഒഎന്‍വി എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എനിക്കും പലപ്പോഴും അങ്ങിനെ തോന്നിയ അവസരങ്ങളുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്. സഹജനെ ആഴത്തിലറിയുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരു വന്‍കടലിന്‍ നടുവില്‍ പെട്ട് ആടിയുലയുഞ്ഞ അനുഭവങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ എല്ലാ ഇതിഹാസങ്ങളും സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ വഴിവിളക്കാകുന്നുമില്ല. പല ഐതിഹാസികതകളും ആരാലുമറിയപ്പെടാതെ ആറടി മണ്ണില്‍ അലിഞ്ഞു ചേരുകയാണല്ലൊ ചെയ്യുക.
എനിക്ക് പ്രൊഫ. ടി.ജെ. ജോസഫ് ആരായിരുന്നു? അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തകത്തില്‍ പ്രതിപാതിച്ച ആക്‌സമികതകള്‍ നടന്നില്ലായിരുന്നുവെങ്കില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഞാന്‍ അറിയുകപോലുമില്ലായിരുന്നു. ഇനി പരിചയക്കാരനാണെങ്കില്‍ത്തന്നെ ആരാകുമായിരുന്നു എനിക്ക് ടി.ജെ. ജോസഫ്? ഒരു സാധാരണ കോളജ് വാദ്ധ്യാര്‍, ആമിയുടെയും മിഥുന്റെയും അപ്പച്ചന്‍, സലോമിയുടെ ഗൗരവക്കാരനായ ഭര്‍ത്താവ്, എല്ലാ ഞായറാഴ്ചയും മുടങ്ങാതെ പള്ളിയില്‍ പോകുന്ന ഒരു സത്യക്രിസ്ത്യാനി. ഇതിനപ്പുറം ഈ ഇതിഹാസത്തെ ഈ മലയാള മണ്ണ് അറിയുമായിരുന്നൊ...?
2010 മാര്‍ച്ച് 19 ന് തന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ബികോം ഒന്നാം വര്‍ഷ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളുടെ രണ്ടാം സെമസ്റ്റര്‍ മലയാളം പരീക്ഷയ്ക്ക് ചിഹ്നകത്തെ സമ്പന്ധിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ചോദ്യം തയ്യാറാക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഈ മനുഷ്യന്‍, ഭ്രാന്തിന്റെ കൊമ്പില്‍ തൂങ്ങിയാടുന്ന-താന്‍ ജീവിക്കുന്ന സമൂഹമെന്ന വൈതാളിക രൂപത്തെ തെല്ലും സംശയിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല? ശരിയായിരിക്കാം; സാഹിത്യത്തില്‍ പിശാചും പരുഷ വാക്കുകളും, വൈരുദ്ധ്യങ്ങളും ജുഗുപ്‌സയുമൊക്കെ കഥാപാത്രമാകുക സ്വാഭാവികമാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് അദ്ദേഹം തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ചോദ്യഭാഗത്തിലെ ഭ്രാന്തന്‍ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തിന് ഒരു പേരുനല്‍കണമെന്നു തോന്നിയതും അത് താന്‍ പകര്‍ത്തിയ ചോദ്യഭാഗമെഴുതിയ പി.ടി.കുഞ്ഞുമുഹമ്മദിന്റെ 'മുഹമ്മദ്' എന്ന പേര് സ്വീകരിച്ചതും. അടുത്തവീട്ടിലെ ശിവനെ നമ്മള്‍ പട്ടി ശിവന്‍ എന്ന് വിളിക്കാറുണ്ടല്ലൊ ചെറ്റത്തരം കാണിക്കുന്ന രാമനെ ചെറ്റ രാമന്‍ എന്നും വിളിച്ചാല്‍ തെറ്റില്ല. കാര്യമൊക്കെ ശരിതന്നെ പക്ഷെ പലപ്പോഴും അതി മാരകമായ രീതിയില്‍ ഒരു യുക്തിയുമില്ലാതെ തിരിഞ്ഞു കടിക്കാന്‍ സാധ്യതയുള്ള ഒരു ക്രൂര ജന്തുവാണ് സമൂഹമെന്ന് പ്രൊഫ. ടി.ജെ. ജോസഫ് ചിന്തിച്ചില്ല...!! ഈ പ്രബുദ്ധ സമൂഹത്തെ ജോസഫ് മാഷ് കണ്ണടച്ചു വിശ്വസിച്ചു?! ജീന്‍സിട്ടതിന്റെ പേരില്‍, തലയിലെ തട്ടം അല്‍പമൊന്നു മാറിപ്പോയതിന്റെ പേരില്‍, ആര്‍ത്തവത്തിന്റെ പേരില്‍, ചുക്കിനും ചുണ്ണാമ്പിനും കൊള്ളാത്ത കാലഹരണപ്പെട്ട ആചാരങ്ങളുടെ പേരില്‍ നിരന്തരം കൊല്ലും കൊലപാതകങ്ങളും നടത്തുന്ന ഈ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രബുദ്ധതയെകുറിച്ച് ജോസഫ് മാഷ് തെല്ലും സംശയിച്ചില്ല?!
തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ഈ ചോദ്യം 32 വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളടങ്ങുന്ന ഒരു ചെറു സമൂഹത്തിന് സമര്‍പ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടതോടെ ടി.ജെ. ജോസഫ് എന്ന മനുഷ്യന്‍ തന്റെ ജീവിതേതിഹാസത്തെ താനറിയാതെ ഒരു വലിയ സമൂഹത്തിനു മുന്‍പിലേയ്ക്ക് കയറൂരിവിടുകയായിരുന്നു.
ഭ്രാന്തന്‍ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തിന് 'മുഹമ്മദ്' എന്ന നാമകരണം ചെയ്തതിന്റെ പേരില്‍, ജീവിതത്തില്‍ നാളിതുവരെ ഒരു സഹജീവിയെപോലും നോവിക്കാതെ ജീവിച്ചു വന്ന മനുഷ്യന്‍ ഇരുട്ടില്‍ പാത്തും പതുങ്ങിയും ജീവിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു. ഒളിവില്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു. ജയിലില്‍ കിടന്നു. പോലീസിന്റെയും സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ആട്ടും തുപ്പുമേറ്റു.... നമ്മളെല്ലാമടങ്ങുന്ന ഈ സമൂഹം പ്രൊഫ. ടി. ജെ. ജോസഫിനെ 'മണ്ടന്‍' എന്ന് വിളിച്ചു പരിഹസിച്ചു. 'ഇദ്ദേഹത്തനറിയില്ല... ഭ്രാന്തനെ നിങ്ങള്‍ മുഹമ്മദാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ ഈ മുഹമ്മദിനെ പ്രവാചനകാക്കാനുള്ള ഭാവന ഈ സമൂഹത്തിനുണ്ട്. അതിന്റെ പേരില്‍ താങ്കളെ വെട്ടി തുണ്ടമാക്കാനുള്ള കാട്ടാള ബുദ്ധിയും!'
2010 ജൂലൈ നാലിന് ഈ സാധാരണക്കാരനായ പ്രൊഫ. ടി. ജെ. ജോസഫിനെ നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹം തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. കൈകാലുകള്‍ വെട്ടി തുണ്ടം മാക്കി. പക്ഷെ ജോസഫ് മാഷ് പൊരുതി.... അതി മാരകമായ ഈ സമൂഹത്തോട് ഇഞ്ചിഞ്ചോടിഞ്ച് പൊരുതി... മുഹമ്മദിനെയും ജീസസ്സിനെയും പോക്കറ്റിലിട്ടു നടക്കുന്ന മതമേധാവിത്വത്തോടുപൊരുതി. അത് പ്രത്യക്ഷ സമരങ്ങളായിരുന്നില്ല. മറിച്ച് നീതിമാനായ ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതസമരമായിരുന്നു. തന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ആകസ്മികതകള്‍ തന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ സാധാരണക്കാരന്റെ ഉള്ളടക്കത്തെ അസാധാരണമാക്കുകയും അതിനെ വലിയൊരു ജീവിതേതിഹാസമാക്കി സമൂഹത്തിന് തിരിച്ചുകൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്യാനുള്ള ഒരു ചരിത്ര ദൗത്യം പിന്നീട് പ്രൊഫ. ടി.ജെ. ജോസഫിന് ചെയ്യാനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആ ഇതിഹാസമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയ ആത്മകഥ 'അറ്റുപോകാത്ത ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍'.
തന്റെ രാണാങ്കണത്തില്‍ തന്നൊടൊപ്പം തോളോടു തോള്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നു പൊരുതിയ പ്രിയ പത്‌നി സലോമിയെ ജോസഫ് മാഷിന് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. അദ്ദേഹം വിശ്വസ��ച്ച തിരുസഭ അവരെ കൊന്നു. തന്റെ കാല്‍പനികമായ ജീവിതം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു, വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളും കലാലയവും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു, തൊഴില്‍ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു, അംഗംഭംഗം വന്നു.... പക്ഷെ അദ്ദേഹം പൊരുതി... പൊരുതിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. പ്രൊഫ. ടി.ജെ. ജോസഫ് എന്ന മനുഷ്യനെ മലയാള സാഹിത്യം ഏറ്റെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.
അറ്റുപോകാത്ത ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍ എന്ന പുസ്തകം നാളിതുവരെ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുള്ള ആത്മകഥകളുടെ ഗണത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് വളരെ വ്യതിരിക്തമായി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഒന്നാണ്. അമ്പരപ്പോടെ അതിലധികം വിലാപത്തോടെ, വിയര്‍ത്തുകുളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടല്ലാതെ, ഭീതിപൂണ്ട്-വിറച്ചുകൊണ്ടല്ലാതെ... ഒടുവിലിത്തിരി സമാശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ ആനന്ദാനുഭൂതിയോടെയല്ലാതെ വായിച്ചവസാനിപ്പിക്കാനാവില്ല ഈ പുസ്തകം. ഈ പുസ്തകം തരുന്ന ആത്മീയ വെളിച്ചത്തിന് ഒരു വലിയ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ കനം ഉണ്ട്.
ആരാണ് പ്രൊഫ. ടി.ജെ. ജോശഫിനെ ആക്രമിച്ചത്? പ്രവാചക നിന്ദ ആരോപിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ആരോ എവിടെയൊ ഇരുന്ന് കല്‍പ്പിച്ചതനുസരിച്ച് ഇറങ്ങിപ്പുറപ്പെട്ട ചിന്താ ശേഷയില്ലാത്ത കുറെ മൃഗങ്ങളാണോ? സലോമിയെ വിഷാദ രോഗിയാക്കി കൊന്നുതള്ളിയ കോതമംഗലം രൂപതയും, സഹപ്രവര്‍ത്തകനെ തള്ളിപ്പറഞ്ഞ് അദ്ധ്യാപക സമൂഹവും, ചാട്ടുളിപോലുള്ള വാക്കുകള്‍ കൊണ്ട് നിരവധി അവസരങ്ങളില്‍ കുത്തി നോവിച്ച സര്‍ക്കാരും, നീതി പാലകരും, ന്യായാധിപന്മാരും, മതസംഘടനകളും, ഈ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ പരിച്ഛേദമല്ല. മറിച്ച് ഒരു സമൂഹംതന്നെയാണ് - ഈ സമൂഹം മുഴുവനും കുറ്റക്കാരാണ്.
'ഒരു മീന്‍ മുറിച്ചാല്‍ എത്ര കഷ്ണം?' എന്ന് ചോദിച്ച ഭ്രാന്തന്‍ മുഹമ്മദിന്റെ ചോദ്യത്തിനുള്ള പടച്ചോന്റെ മറുപടി മൂന്നു മുറിയാണെടാ നായിന്റെ മോനെ എന്നായിരുന്നല്ലൊ. ഈ സമൂഹം ഭ്രാന്തിന്റെ മൂന്നല്ല-മൂന്നൂറു മുറിയാണ്.... ഭ്രാന്തിന്റെ, ക്രൂരതയുടെ, നിര്‍ദ്ദയമായ കഷ്ണങ്ങളാണ് എന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവിന്റെ വേദനയോടെയാണ് നമ്മള്‍ വായനക്കാര്‍ ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു മടക്കിവെയ്ക്കുക.
പ്രൊഫ. ടി. ജെ. ജോസഫ് എന്ന അദ്ധ്യാപകന്റെ രക്തവും മാംസ്യവും മാത്രമല്ല ഈ പുസ്തകം. ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്‍ എന്തായിരിക്കണമെന്നതിന്റെ യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ ദൃഷ്ടാന്തമാണ് ഈ ജീവിത പുസ്തകം. ഒരിക്കല്‍ തൊടുപുഴയിലേയ്ക്കുള്ള യാത്രയില്‍, ബസില്‍ ഡ്രൈവറിനടുത്തുള്ള മുന്‍സീറ്റിലിരുന്ന സഹയാത്രികയായ ഒരമ്മച്ചി ഛര്‍ദ്ദിക്കാന്‍ മുട്ടി ഓടി പിന്‍ സീറ്റിലിരുന്ന ജോസഫ് മാഷിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്കു വന്നു പുറത്തേക്ക് തലിയിട്ട് ഛര്‍ദ്ദിക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമത്തില്‍ മാഷിന്റെ മേല്‍ ഛര്‍ദ്ദിയഭിഷേകം നടത്തുന്നു. മാഷ് ആ ഛര്‍ദ്ദിയഭിഷേകമത്രയും ക്ഷമയോടെ ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി. ഇത്രയധികം യാത്രക്കാരുണ്ടായിട്ടും ഈ ഛര്‍ദ്ദില്‍ വന്നുവീണത് തന്റെ മാത്രം ദേഹത്താണ്. ഇന്നത്തെ താരം-ഭാഗ്യവാന്‍ താനാണെന്ന് മാഷിന്റെ നര്‍മ്മ മധുരമായ ബുദ്ധി ചിന്തിക്കുന്നു! ആകസ്മികതകളെ ധീരമായി എതിരേറ്റവനാണ് ജോസഫ് മാഷ്. കൊക്കിന്റെ വായിലകപ്പെട്ട തവളയായി മാറുമ്പോഴും 'Don't Ever Give Up' എന്ന മനോഭാവത്തോടെ ജീവിതത്തെ നേരിട്ട ജോസഫ് മാഷ് സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസകാരനാണ്. തന്റെ വിധികള്‍ക്ക് സ്വയമെറിഞ്ഞുകൊടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് തന്റെ ജീവിതേതിഹാസം സൃഷ്ടിച്ച മനുഷ്യന്‍-യോദ്ധാവ്.
പ്രൊഫ. ടി. ജെ. ജോസഫിന്റെ അറ്റുപോകാത്ത ഓര്‍മ്മകളെ ആര്‍ക്കും അറുത്തുമാറ്റാന്‍ സാധിക്കില്ല. ഈ ജീവിതേതിഹാസത്തെ മലയാള സാഹിത്യം ഏറ്റെടുത്തു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഈ പുസ്തകം ഉയര്‍ത്തുന്ന സൗമ്യമായ കൊടുങ്ങാറ്റിനു മുന്‍പില്‍, ഉയര്‍ത്തുന്ന ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പില്‍ സമൂഹം കൂച്ചുവിലങ്ങിട്ടു നില്‍ക്കുന്നു.
വായിച്ചു തീരുമ്പോള്‍ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തെ, എന്നിലെ വായനക്കാരന്‍ ഹൃദയത്തോടു ചേര്‍ത്തു വയ്ക്കുന്നു. വായനക്കിടയില്‍ പലപ്പോഴും കരഞ്ഞു, ഭയന്നു, സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങളില്‍പോലും ഇതിലെ അക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ കടന്നുവന്നു... വേട്ടയാടിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു...
ഇത് അക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെ വിജയമാണ്. നീതിയുടെ വിജയമാണ്. ഇത്തരം ചില വിജയങ്ങള്‍ ഭൂമുഖത്ത് സംഭവിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഈ ഭൂമി ഈ നിലയ്‌ക്കെങ്കിലും അതിന്റെ അചുതണ്ടില്‍ തിരിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.

അറ്റുപോകാത്ത ഓർമ്മകൾ ഒരു ആത്മകഥ മാത്രമല്ല, അതിക്രമത്തെയും അനീതിയെയും നേരിട്ട ഒരാളുടെ സത്യസന്ധമായ സ്വരമാണ്. പ്രൊഫ. ടി. ജെ. ജോസഫ് തന്റെ ജീവിതകഥ തുറന്നു പറയുന്നത് വളരെ ലളിതമായ ഭാഷയിലാണ്. അധ്യാപകനായുള്ള യാത്ര, 2010-ലെ കൈവെട്ട് ആക്രമണം, അതിനു പിന്നാലെ കുടുംബത്തിനും തനിക്കുമുണ്ടായ വേദനകളും നഷ്ടങ്ങളും, ഓരോ സംഭവവും ഹൃദയം തുളച്ച് കടന്നുപോകുന്ന സത്യങ്ങളാണ്.

ഒരു പരീക്ഷാ ചോദ്യത്തിലൂടെ തുടങ്ങിയ വിവാദം, പിന്നീട് ഭീകരാക്രമണത്തിൽ എത്തിയത്, അതിനുശേഷം സമൂഹവും സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും നൽകിയ അനീതി, ഇതെല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹം നേരിട്ടത് അത്യന്തം ശാന്തമായും തുറന്നുപറഞ്ഞുമാണ്. ആക്രമണത്തിന് പിന്നാലെ അമ്മയുടെ വേദന, ഭാര്യയുടെ ദുരന്തകരമായ ആത്മഹത്യ, സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തിനുള്ള പോരാട്ടം, ഇവയെല്ലാം പുസ്തകത്തിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.

ഭാഷയിൽ അതിശയോക്തികളൊന്നുമില്ല, പക്ഷേ ഓരോ വരിയും രക്തം ചിന്തുന്ന അനുഭവമാണ്. ഏറ്റവും ഇരുണ്ട നിമിഷങ്ങളിലും ആത്മബലത്തോടെ മുന്നോട്ട് പോയ ഒരാളുടെ ജീവിതസാക്ഷ്യം. അറ്റുപോകാത്ത ഓർമ്മകൾ വേദനയുടെ കഥ മാത്രമല്ല; അതിജീവനത്തിന്റെ, ആത്മസംയമനത്തിന്റെ, മനുഷ്യസ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ കഥ കൂടിയാണ്. വായിച്ചുതീർന്നാലും ഏറെനാൾ മനസ്സിൽ മുഴങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും ഈ കൃതി.

It doesn't make sense to give a rating for this book, as it would be like rating the professor's life - a harrowing account of being a victim of religious fanaticism in India. I had heard this news vaguely when it happened but the horrifying details of extremism, abandonment by authorities and even friends, and the fact that this happened in the state where I lived most of my life kept me awake at night while reading this book and many days after. However, the professor's act of forgiveness, acceptance with grace and a positive attitude even after being through all these makes his life worth a 5 star rating.

Prof T J Joseph has written his autobiography, an unparalleled tragedy, in a surprisingly humorous way, which made me laugh and cry at the same time. Our society did a great injustice to this man. A must read.
