A man is murdered at a carnival. For Zane Clearwater, witnessing the crime is a dark reminder of a violent past he had hoped to put behind him and his teenage sister Lettie. But the fear on her face tells him one thing: she's somehow involved and as her guardian, he must protect her at all costs. Even if it jeopardizes his future as a police officer.
Zane has a lot of questions, but so do the police...and the FBI. Zane had seen his sister's genius computer skills as an asset to get her into college and out of the hand-to-mouth life he was living as security guard and janitor. But Lettie had decided to use those skills in some questionable schemes on the dark web. And now trouble had come looking for them in real life.
When Lettie takes off for California, Zane embarks on a journey of discovery that even unbreakable bonds may have their limits. Can he stay one step ahead of trouble and protect Lettie? Or has trouble finally caught up with them for good?
Lynn Lipinski is a writer who channels an overactive imagination into fictional worlds where justice rules, karma is real and the good person comes out on top. Her second book, "God of the Internet," was named to Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2016 list and IndieReader's Best of 2016 list.
Her Zane Clearwater Mystery series is set in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which also happens to be her favorite place to write about even though decades of living in L.A. have worn away the Okie accent. She earned an M.F.A. in creative writing from Mount St. Mary's University in 2018.
Zane Clearwater is working as a security guard at a carnival when he and his sister, Lettie witness a murder. Seeing someone killed in front of you is troubling enough, but seeing his sister's reaction, Zane knows that his sister is somehow involved. Zane hoped to leave his troubled past in the past. But this murder has brought his past to the forefront.
Zane, along with the police have questions, but when Lettie leaves, Zane vows to do whatever her can to bring her home and get to the bottom of what she is involved with. His quest to find his sister takes him to new places, uncovers harsh truths, reveals secrets, and puts them all in the path of danger.
I was first introduced to Zane Clearwater in Bloodlines. Although, this book would work nicely as a stand-alone, Bloodlines a great book and I highly recommend reading that book first.
This proved to be a fast read for me and I appreciated that the author did not have long drawn-out scenes. The pacing was spot on, and I could feel Zane's desperation to locate his sister jumping off the page. There is tension, a sense of dread and a fair amount of action in the book. There are some twists and turns, and nothing felt as if it came out of left field.
If you have not read Lynn Lipinski, you are missing out!
Well written, dark, and well thought out!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Serpent Loop is the third novel by American author, Lynne Lipinski, and is a sequel to Bloodlines. In an effort to support his fifteen-year-old half-sister, Lettie, Zane Clearwater is working two jobs: maintenance at the zoo in Tulsa, and security for the xx carnival at yy. It’s at the latter venue that he is too late to prevent the stabbing murder of Wally Zittman. It reminds him rather too much of his father’s death, but what worries him most is that Lettie seems to know the victim.
After a bit of internet searching, he sees a clip of the knife attack that shows the murderer, so goes to see the only cop he trusts, Detective Angus Poster, who recognises him as a known felon. When it becomes clear that said felon is looking for Lettie, Zane whisks her away to safety, wondering all the while just what she has gotten mixed up in, and feeling guilty for not raising her better.
When Lettie goes missing, Zane teams up with her boyfriend, Angel in a chase through the seedier areas of Los Angeles that entails encounters with characters benevolent and malevolent in equal measure, the exposure of the façade presented by a past friend, being tailed by a killer, and making a deal with the FBI that could be quite dangerous.
Lipinski’s characters have depth and appeal, with Zane’s Cherokee heritage adding interest. Her plot is imaginative, with plenty of action leading up to a tension-filled climax. While there is sufficient recap of events in the first book to allow this book to stand alone, there are necessarily many spoilers for Bloodlines, so reading the books in order is recommended. The ending leaves plenty of scope for further books featuring this cast. Enjoyable crime fiction. This unbiased review is from an uncorrected proof copy provided by NetGalley and Majestic Content LA.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Serpent Loop is the second installment of the Zane Clearwater series. Just like the previous book, we are still following the lives of Zane and his sister Lettie. With his new job being a security guard at a carnival, the last thing he would ever expect to happen is witnessing a murder. On top of that, his sister was also there and is somehow involved. Or that's the train of thought immediately being created within Zane's mind. Either way, he needs to figure out what's happening and a way out of it fast.
Honestly, so much happened in this. I think things probably would have gone down a bit easier or smoother if Lettie didn't somehow get away. Her leaving while the police are questioning was not a good sign. On top of that, Zane starts freaking out trying to figure out where she actually went. So, while trying to find her he doesn't expect to uncover so many things along the way.
With each twist and turn, I was completely hooked. The overall mystery and pace were pretty good in my opinion. I never felt bored or lost when it came to certain situations and just wanted to know what was going to happen next.
In the end, I'm very happy that I came across this series. Not sure if these two are going to walk into another unfortunate murder situation but I wouldn't be mad if they did.
Book Blurb) Witnessing a murder at the carnival he works for was a painful reminder of Zane Clearwater’s dark past. He had hoped all that was behind him, but one look at the fear on his sister Lettie’s face and he’s right back in the thick of it. Even if means jeopardizing his dream of becoming a police officer, he’s desperate to protect her at all cost.
But Nettie has a secret .. one she's keeping from her brother. She's been working on the dark web in questionable schemes that have landed her in serious trouble.
There's plenty of action, a murder, a cross-country chase, with cops and FBI following every step of the way. Bedlam and confusion keeps all the characters on the move ..... with resulting twists and turns leading to a most interesting and satisfactory conclusion. The characters are finely drawn. Although 2nd in the series, this can easily be read as a stand alone.
Many thanks to the author / Independent Book Publishers Association / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and review voluntarily, opinions expresses here are unbiased and entirely my own.
When I started reading this book I kept thinking about another book I’d read, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. At first I couldn’t think why and finally I realized they were both about more or less abandoned kids with the older brother trying to take care of his younger sibling and they both take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Amazing how my subconscious can dredge up memories and there’s the connection.
Anyway, this is a well written portrait of young lives on the edge of surviving and not surviving. No parents, two menial jobs, no family other then a grandmother who lives thirty miles away and a fifteen year old sister who seems to be always be at risk and there you have Zane’s life summed up
This is the second book in the series and I have not read the first book. Although the past history was explained as the story unfolded I still felt as though I would have had a better understanding of Zane and what he and Lettie went though if I had read the first book.
The author has written an interesting story of two kids in a struggle to survive their circumstances and maybe finally find some happiness but first they both are at the mercy of some not so nice people and that is what this book is all about.
I won this book in a First Reads giveaway. Thank you to the author Lynn Lipinski.
I am so happy for a sequel of Bloodlines - there is something about down-on-his-luck Zane and innocent Lettie that invested me in their lives and kept me wanting more. I was even excited to see Old Spice, although he takes an understandably lesser role than in Bloodlines.
When a fight at Zane’s work ends up with one person dead and the other loose and unidentified, Zane has more questions than answers. What connection does Lettie have with these lowlifes? What else has Lettie been hiding from him? Zane attempts to stay ahead of the investigation to protect Lettie, but loses the advantage when Lettie takes off. Can Zane find her before anyone else does? Can Zane keep her safe?
It can be a bit nerve wracking going into a sequel of a murder mystery - will the second book follow the same pattern as the first or blaze a new trail? I was relieved it was the latter. Serpent Loop hooked me quick and kept me guessing until the end. I loved being able to take the twists with surprise and I had forgotten how much I missed rooting for Zane and Lettie, even when they make questionable choices.
It’s so hard reviewing a mystery because I’m dying to share my “OMG”, “WTH”, “Whhhhhhy” moments, but I can’t without spoiling anything. It’s fair, but… not… so let’s just say that when things unfold, they keep a little bit of unpredictability to keep you guessing. You may be right, but you will catch a few surprises.
Since Serpent Loop is a sequel, I recommend reading Bloodlines first. Serpent Loop will definitely spoil the mystery of Bloodlines AND I adore Zane and Lettie so.. 2 books = 2 times the time spent with them = more time you can adore them too. But… if you absolutely can’t wait, Serpent Loop can be read as a stand-alone. The plot of Bloodlines flows into Serpent Loop via flashbacks so anyone not familiar with the first book gets a good picture of what Zane and Lettie have been through.
Thank you to Lynn Lipinski for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to the release date in exchange for an honest review.
Serpent Loop is the sequel to Lynn Lipinski’s Bloodlines, which I read in June.
Zane is trying his best to raise his sister Lettie, after their mother was murdered. Things settled down and luckily Zane was cleared of the charges, as he was a suspect.
They no longer live at the trailer park but life is still hard and Zane has to work two jobs. He is finding it very difficult to be a good guardian and being able to provide for them.
While working at a carnival a guy gets knifed/killed and Lettie is somehow involved. Apparently she’s in the wrong (criminal) crowd and Zane will have to do everything he can to protect his little sister.
Will he be able to stay one step ahead and get her out of the trouble she’s in? Or has trouble finally caught up with them?
Loved this book! The characters are relatable and go through difficult/hard times, just like we might have. It has suspense and is an easy read.
One thing is clear, family is important and wouldn’t we all want to protect those we love at all cost?
“Serpent Loop” is a cutthroat, gripping ride where everything proves to have a price. Caught in a world between hazy trailer park mysticism and underground identity crime, Zane’s midwestern life of carnival security shifts and cleaning animal cages at the local run-down zoo to make ends meet is derailed after he witnesses a twisted murder. When his little sister goes missing, Zane uncovers a trail of organized internet crime that he must reach far enough into to pull his sister out, and is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice to prove himself to be a worthy guardian. Throbbing with suspense and desperation, Lipinski once again weaves an electrifying plot into a brand new, can’t-miss thriller.
It was such an honor to read this ARC. I absolutely fell in love with Bloodlines, and Serpent Loop was a fantastic dive deeper into these characters lives after what happened. An intriguing mystery following Lettie with a strong arc as Zane comes to terms with his guardianship over her. I fell into this world and fell more in love with these characters. The feel-good ending had me satisfied yet wanting even more.
Lipinksi’s natural gift for storytelling shines in Serpent Loop. The characters and scenery jump off the page to pull you in. Zane’s relationship with Lettie will be felt by anyone who ever had responsibility for a young, misguided teen. The journey he finds himself on is exciting, intriguing, and will keep you hooked to the end. Lynn Lipinski will quickly become one of your go-to authors for suspense.
The author did a fantastic job of grabbing the reader's attention with a gripping opening scene. While this book seems to be a continuation of the author’s first book, Bloodlines, this narrative does an amazing job of connecting the two books while still allowing new readers to jump into the story headfirst without having read the first book. The suspense and atmosphere are adrenaline-fueled as the reader is treated to twists and turns galore and the original crime spirals into something the protagonist could not have seen coming.
What was captivating the most was the balance the author found with this twisted narrative with the emotional and realistic journey the protagonist went on. Between trying to solve the mystery of what caused this violent altercation to turn into murder, to trying to bond and figure out the complicated issues his little sister has gotten into in her teenage years, and the struggle to find his life’s purpose all at the same time is something many readers are going to be able to identify with and makes for truly engaging reading overall.
The Verdict
A marvelous, entertaining, edge-of-your-seat thriller, author Lynn Lipinski’s “Serpent Loop” is the must-read crime thriller you have to be reading this fall. Beautifully written and highly creative, the author has delivered a narrative that feels real and magical all at once and brings a true depth of emotional development for these characters that readers won’t be able to help themselves from feeling a bond with them.
Wow, I was so shocked when Lynn asked me to be one of her AR's. Of course I was aware of Lynns talent after reading her first book's Bloodlines and God of internet. But hear faced me in serpent loop broke all my expectations!
Serpent Loop may be the sequel of Bloodlines but it can 100% be read without knowing what happend before.
We join bake into the life of Zane and his sister lettie, who no longer life in their childhood home. He is working hard to provide a future for both of them, but hes struggling to juggle work, life and guarding his sister.
But of course knowing the siblings Clearwater life will never be easy.
So when Zane is informed about the fact that his sister is somehow involved in a murder. Will Lettie get in trouble? or can get brother save her?
I guess you have to read the book to figure out more!
I couldn't put this book down so trust me and GO.BUY.IT
We all love Zane & Lettie that’s why we are are here right??? This book was a crazy ride! Zane once again is just in the worst place at the worst time. This boy is like a danger magnet!!! The whole book was and up and down and back and forth of who did it. Also can I just say Angel is the sweetest!!! I am praying for a book 3 about these 3 characters I am so not ready to leave their lives yet!
A strong follow up to 'Bloodlines', although I only knew it was a sequel after being intrigued by references to an interesting back story, so off I scuttled to read that midway through this one! Zane is developing into a lovely complex character, with a desire to do the right thing, mixed with understandable desire to protect his family. The story builds to an inevitable ending, and leaves the door open to further glimpses into the lives of the main characters. Definitely worth reading
A wonderful read! Had me intrigued from the first few pages! Serpent Loop follows a young man named Zane who has guardianship of his teen sister, Lettie. Unknownst to Zane, Lettie gets herself into trouble after following a path of not so good choices. This read hooks you instantly, following a murder, an investigation, and then following Zane's path to help his sister out of the mess she's found herself in. The characters are relatable, and they gain so much growth as you read. If you're a mystery thriller fan, this read is for you! Or if you want to become a fan, this book is a wonderful start!
I read this in less than 24 hours because once I started reading I couldn't stop until I found out the truth. Zane, a 26-year-old recovering f***-up has guardianship over his 15-year-old sister, Lettie, and it is clear that she is falling down a bad path. Cue, a murder, an investigation, and a cross-country chase. Lipinski's characters are dynamic and relatable, and I was was hooked by page 2. If you like mystery, thriller, and also a little chaos, you've gotta read this! Beautiful language, and very fun ride.
I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.
Lipinski has done it. Why has it taken me this long to read a mystery/suspense book? This is not my normal genre but I have to say I loved the pacing and the storyline of this woven tale. I am a sucker for any sibling dynamic and I really connected with Zane as a very real character with charming flaws but lots of grit and determination. The lush landscape of Lipinski's world is fantastic as she tells you a tale that will pluck at your heartstrings as you root for the good guys to win!
I was given the amazing opportunity to read Serpent Loop before it came out! Let me make something clear first. I used to not read much. If, when I did read, I would not always make it through the book, or it would take me a long time to finish it. I read the first book in this series, Bloodlines, and that book made me fall in love with reading for the first time. This book is amazing! I'm not just saying this because I was able to read it before it was released. I really enjoyed the way Lynn described some settings in the book, it helped give me a clear image of where Zane (the protagonist) was. You also learn more about his little sister, Lettie. I will admit that there was a plot twist somewhere in the middle that literally made me throw myself off of my bed. If you like more intense books, this (series/book) is definitely one to check out!
This read was SO fast paced. I almost struggled to keep up with how fast this plotline was because things were happening left, right and centre! It's action packed, clever and flows nicely, and despite how quick and short this read is, you as the reader still feel as though getting to know the characters wasn't too rushed and you had a good sense of them.
Short quick chapters make reading this a breeze where there are no boring info dumps, rather action, action, action. However where you'd expect at the end, a huge crime and bloody battle that spans for pages, you really just get a closing scene that lasts a page. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. I think I would've preferred a more elaborate ending.
First, a note to the author. If you don't provide more of Zane, I WILL throw books at you.
Again madam Lipinski shows how to tell a story. Without lots of extraneous padding but still enough detail to make it all seem too real, I was right back in the mess with hapless but happening Zane. You'd have thought he had enough wacky adventure in the last book but that would be too easy. Zany Zane is still struggling with jobs, money, and being the parent and provider for his little sister. Whom he's gonna take care of no matter how many zoo keepers, carnies and high-tech bad guys get in the way.
Again, part of what I do enjoy is these folks are just like us. I expect they even get constipated (but thankfully we don't have to hear about it.
This journey for Zane and his sister, Lettie, is one of crime, secrets and learning. Raising your teenage sister was never going to be easy, but when bad luck seems to follow you about, it gets even harder. A crime ring and bad guys following you around is just the start of Zane's life. Being a recovering alcoholic and trying to keep your sister in check isn't going to be easy. Zane's loyalty to Lettie is seen all through this story, and what he will do to keep her safe is immeasurable. not sure who to trust, Zane struggles with authority in work and from the cops. This is very fast paced and keeps you on your toes, so many twists and turns.
In this sequel to Bloodlines, Lynn Lipinski continues the saga of a brother and sister duo that seem to be magnets for trouble. The twists and turns to figure out who's truly involved in the mystery that's landed them in danger yet again, is masterful. Happily the siblings find their way out of the darkness to begin a new journey through life.
At first, I had a hard time getting into the book. But after the first chapter or so, I started getting invested in the story line. I really liked the characters and the way things really turned out. I would definitely recommend reading this book.
The sequel to Bloodlines, Serpents Loop follows Zane and his sister Lettie as they find themselves wrapped up in trouble once again. I really enjoy the character Zane. He is out into situations that a lot of people can't overcome, but his drive to keep his sister safe helps him to continue to grow and mature into a wonderful man... even if he doesn't recognize it yet. Zane is working two jobs, his primary job at the zoo and a side job he picked up at the carnival that came to town and trying to stay on top of Lettie and her school work, which she seems to have lost interest in. Lettie has gotten mixed up in some illegal activity and other problems her brother has yet to find out about. Zane fights to keep her safe as she continues to blindly throw herself into the wrong path. As her illegal dealings start to catch up to her and her life is in danger, Zane and her boyfriend Angel are in for an adventure as they race to keep her safe. As those in the illegal ring Lettie was working for close in on them and the carnival readies to leave town, get ready for a nail biting, edge of the seat ride as the pieces of the puzzle start sliding into place!
Lynn Lipinski's novel, 'Serpent Loop', is a jewel discovery. It unites the tense thrill and suspense of a dark thriller, with the genuine heart and simplicity of a pure human drama. Zane's search for his sister Lettie submerges us into the dark web of cyber world crimes. While all along, the novel's underlying human thread is their special bond, and Zane's unconditional love and fear for his sister, as he navigates his own grief and the déjà-vus of his dark past. And most importantly, as he accepts his colossal, impossible role as Lettie's young guardian. Along the way, we get to meet a gang of delightful, loyal, profound and charmingly despicable characters with unforgettable names. Here's the wonderful bonus: the novel is a sequel to Lynn Lipinski's 'Bloodlines', but can stand on its own. And in the end, it's about the power of our greatest value and compass: love. I recommend it to all my dear fellow readers. Zhenya Matt
This is like a Scooby-Doo mystery on steroids! It's got the carnival at night babes with a murder in front of a crowd of people. The scenes of action are placed in the engaging cities of Tulsa and Los Angeles. In Zane's world, Tulsa is seedy. L.A. is seedy. Everybody is seedy! So who can Zane trust to help him find his sister, and figure out the kind of trouble she's trying to avoid? It's a guessing game throughout this story, and I could not put this book down. I love a fast-paced tale. The author is full of deep descriptions that leave you with the smells of pit barbecue in Tulsa and street tacos in L.A.. Lipinski shows Zane's determination to make a better life for himself and his sister, but he's always in the middle of a dead body showing up at the worst times. Make this story into a T.V. series. It's that real and gripping.
I won a copy of this book through Goodreads, and actually had not read the first in the series. Even though I didn’t have any backstory, the author did a good job of bringing the reader up to speed.
With that said, i thoroughly enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. It was a fairly quick read for me, but it held my attention and kept me interested in the lives of Zane and Lettie.
The characters were well developed, and the portrayal of real, human emotion displayed by the characters was palpable. Having read the second book in this series, I’m now finding myself eager to go back and read the first, as well as the third.
If you’re into mysteries, thrillers, and stories about non-traditional family dynamics, I definitely recommend this series.
