I listened to this on audiobook and I loved the narration by Amin El Gamal. His voice is so pleasant and he really brought the characters to life.

The story itself was just ok for me. It definitely felt summery, which I liked, and it did have some cute moments. I can't say I liked Harry that much. There were some situations when I found him to be rude and quick to jump to wrong conclusions. He was also a bit self-centered, but I guess most teenagers are. His relationships with other characters felt superficial at times, but at least I liked one of them and I was interested to see how the story would end.

The screenplay chapters were kind of hard to follow and they were just taking me out of the story, so I started skipping them halfway through.

Este libro pintaba ser el perfecto para mi por dos razones principales:
1) Puro queer chaos y hot boys.

¿amateur?

En general mis críticas hacia If You Change Your Mind son meramente por gustos personales. Les recomiendo mucho el libro si les gustan las comedias románticas, porque este es una oda y homenaje a todas esas historias de los 90 y 2000 que nos han enamorado.

“…and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be around someone who feels familiar and makes you feel loved.”

I picked this up because a young person in my life picked it up at the library and I wanted to know what she was reading. The cover art is very “summery” and I could see why she was taken in. She was smarter than me. She abandoned it 40 pages in. I finished it.

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND is sloppily executed. In the Forward the author insists he is mimicking the rom com movie genre with this book. The problem is is that as a writer he is not skilled enough to pull that off. What we get is clichéd, trite, and poorly written and developed. It is a young adult book, I get that I’m not the target audience, but just because it is a YA book does not mean that it should feel like a teenager wrote it as well.

A few quotes:
• “I don’t spend too much time imagining what could be, though. I mean we only really have what is.”
• “You can go off and see it all-whether you’re running to or from something-but eventually you realize home is pretty special.”
• “Sometimes people come into our lives for a little bit, but they don’t stay for a long while…or at least not forever.”

My biggest problem with this book is that a 12/13 year old might like it. The world it creates is not something I want someone of that age thinking is okay or realistic. This novel is about being obsessed with body image and pop culture, normalized underage drinking depicted as okay and consequence free, and social media obsessed nitwits.

Not for me, and I hope not for most.

This has an interesting enough concept and it's charming enough but, like I experienced with Jay's Gay Agenda, it's just not the book for me, which, again, I cannot be more thrilled to experience. Being able to set aside a queer book I'm just not that into because there are so many more to read! What a time to be alive! This seems like it'll do exactly what it says on the tin, I'm just not quite compelled enough to stick out a voice I find a little bit off-putting.

Thanks to Inkyard Press for the ARC!

With June coming up, I've been in the mood for some LGBT books. So, it's safe to assume that I didn't hesitate one bit before jumping into If You Change Your Mind. Mostly because I never knew it existed until yesterday but also because it's a new author for me.

In this, you will meet Harry, Grant, and Logan. Harry just wants to escape Citrus Harbor but has to jump over one last hurdle before he can. Since he completely messed up his SATs, he has to focus on winning a writing competition so that his college application to USC stands out from all the rest. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned because he is still trying to nurse a broken heart and might be falling for a new guy too.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of love triangles, this somehow worked for me. I think it's because I could easily ship Harry with whoever. I wasn't on one person's team this time around and just wanted the kid to be happy. They were all still trying to figure things out so I couldn't really get mad at the mistakes they were making. I did get a little annoyed but that's bound to happen.

In the end, I'm so happy that I came across this book randomly. Not disappointed by anything that happened and secretly can't wait to get my hands on another one of Robby's books. Seriously, I volunteer as tribute.

I can't say that I expected to love this one, but I definitely expected to like it a little bit... Instead, I found it unbearable and spent the entire time rooting for it to end. Even though I've spent 3 days of my life reading it, I can't tell you anything that happened. It was all completely unremarkable. The characters were bland, the love interests were irritating, and the structure was a disaster. Seriously, who approved the screenplay segments?? They were horrible. Took me out of the story, didn't make sense, and just served as yet another obstacle. Not my type of book.

Robby Weber's debut is a funny and charming holiday rom-com in a small beach town of Florida!

The book is paying tribute to famous rom-coms, with multiple references of them and uses most of the classic tropes, including the most prominent one: a love triangle.

Harry is dealing with a lot this summer: after his grades plummetted last year when his boyfriend Grant moved away without even bothering to tell him in person and left him heartbroken, his last shot for getting accepted to his dream university for screenwriting, USC, is winning a screenwriting competition this summer. Problems: a) he hasn't finished his script, b) Grant is back in town, c) he befriends charming Logan, and might be feeling things for him.

Usually, I'm not the biggest fan of love triangles, but in this case I make an exception, because it was obvious with whom Harry had the best chemistry and the healthiest relationship, thus I could read the scenes with the "other one" without rattling my teeth most of the time.

Robby portrays the insecurities and indecision of teenagers very accurately, who have to make life choices at such a young age without even knowing what exactly they want. He also captures the summer holiday vibe perfectly, with the surfing, the ocean, the beach club.

I loved the little ABBA cosplaying of the Kensington siblings (although I expected more ABBA in this book judging from the title to be honest), and the little sister Lottie was a scene stealer. I also liked Foster a lot. The best friend on the other side, Hailey, was the character I was invested the least.

All in all, this is a book that will make you smile and an exciting first novel by Robby Weber!

This book is the perfect summer read. Set in sunny Florida at the summer break, it's about Harry who wants to become a famous Hollywood screenwriter and who is struggling with his love life. It's so refreshing to have a main character who, for once, is not deeply introverted and riddled with anxiety. He's not exactly an extrovert either, but whereas in almost every other YA book the main character is secretly pining for their crush the whole book long, Harry has problems on a completely different level. There are at least three guys interested in him and he has a hard time sorting through his feelings for them.

In the preface the author writes about how he grow up loving rom-coms, but also the lack of gay ones. So he decided to write one himself. I'm glad he did, because this a really great one. It's such a pleasure to read and the world really needs more of that. Books, where people are just gay and it's not the main theme, where people are gay just like others are straight.

This book is an amazing debut and I really hope to read more from Robby Weber in the future. I really would like to see this book on screen. Heartstopper has just been released on Netflix and having such a huge impact. We're all desperate for uplifting queer content like this. So, Netflix, please pick up this one. I'm begging you.

🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride Month everyone 🏳️‍🌈

2.5?

Siri, play Let Me Down by Kelly Clarkson.

I credit my ability to actually finish this book with missing my Christmas flight home and sitting in the Salt Lake airport for 6 hours. There is NO PLOT. And while I am the first person to sign up for a character-driven story, the characters don't really grow a whole lot either.

TW: cheating ex (side character), side character with Alzheimer's, vomiting

A main part of this book is a love triangle, something I find so tiresome, ALTHOUGH there's more like 4 love interests... kinda? I do appreciate the authentic portrayal of what it's actually like to crush on people in high school, and how it's less about the commitment and more about who is paying attention to you at the moment. And another positive for this book is that it's about queer joy! The sexuality is simply there, not a source of conflict in the story.

There's also a superhero screenplay that somewhat parallels the events of the story running between chapters because the main character wants to go to screenwriting school (I think?), but I was so bored by those sections. It made for too many characters and felt like an addition made after the editor told him it would be fun. It definitely could be fun! If it wasn't like a half-baked cake with a soggy middle.

I genuinely remember very little else from this book, except the single POC is the best friend character and that it takes place in Florida. Really wished I liked this more because I love Robby's content, but there are only so many "TSwift"s I can handle.

ETA: The chapter titles referencing romcoms was my favorite part of the entire book 🤭

Thank you to the publisher for the early copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

If vanilla were a book, this would be it. Very safe, non offensive, acceptable gays do safe non offensive acceptable gay things and everyone holds hands and gets along. If you like low angst, this is fine. I really don’t have a problem with it, especially if you’re a teen new to LGBT books. If you like What If It’s Us, you’ll like this.

However, please, for the love of god, when you write your entire character around the fact that they’re a super awesome playwright/author/musician, can you make sure they’re actually good? Each chapter ended with an excerpt of Harry’s screenplay, and it got to the point where I just skipped them. I did not root for this boy to make it in Hollywood, I’m sorry. It was so bad.

Heads up: this review is one massive abba Joke, this may not be suited for pun haters.

If You Change Your Mind was a book that seemed really fun. Even the cover was a super trouper. From the romcom and Abba references to the fun story I was the first in line. But mamma Mia, after reading a few pages in I could predict every plot line. The main character was young, sweet, seventeen, and even though he wasn't looking for a king, he knew any guy could be that guy. He decides to take a chance on this guy visiting from out of town for the summer and possibly his ex in a casual love triangle hoping one of them will take a chance on him.

Honestly I felt the stakes were put to the test and failed. We hear things are happening but the author doesn't lay all his love on the character's emotional stakes, rather we get something that feels fun but just a filler read. There were fun moments and as a whole it was enjoyable. But it is true, and everything isn't new, and all I've learned is this was a beat for beat romcom that was way too predictable for me to get invested in the romance or any subplots. Honestly, the only thing that made me feel bad for the main character was that he lives in Florida, and of course he wants to go to LA because he's made up his mind it must come to an end.

In conclusion, thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing. Thanks for all the joy they're bringing. Who can live without it? Me, in all honesty it was fine but I didn't feel I gained anything out of this.

I got the ARC off of Netgalley and these opinions are my own. I absolutely loved this book! I enjoyed Harry so much! I liked that he had such a strong idea of what he wanted to do after he graduated! I also enjoyed Hailey, Lottie, Milly! I can see what drew Harry to Grant even though he is kind of douchey, I think overall he’s not a bad person! Logan was the perfect amount of awkward, nerdy, confident, and cute! I enjoyed Harry and Logan’s interactions so much! And then there is Foster, he kind of stole the show for me I loved him! I feel like he needs his own story! I enjoyed the build up to the climax and the resolution was perfect! I like that Robby Weber does an excellent job of show casing how even the best plains can change and how things are rarely simply! And Harry’s movie You’re My Hero absolutely needs to be a movie! Rory, Jenson, and Skip’s story was every bit of captivating as Harry’s was! I can’t wait to get my hands on the physical copy of this!

I went into If You Change Your Mind expecting a fluffy, summery read, and in some respects, that's what I got. But this novel is deeper, more involved, and more emotional than that. Factor in that Harry is a highly likeable character and Logan is an incredible one, and it all adds up to a solid debut novel for Robby Weber.

This was a pretty painful read for me, I want to start off by saying that I feel like this book is targeting a pretty niche audience and It really just wasn’t for me.

I didn’t really get most of the pop culture references. Even though I don’t usually reach for a lot of romcoms I can usually get through them and appreciate the genre when it’s done well, sadly this one missed the mark for me. I also found the screenplay parts at the end of each chapter to be really obnoxious and it took me out of the story at the end of EVERY chapter.

Love triangles can be either really great or really bad and I think that generally is determined by how good the characters are. Harry is a really boring main character and we really don’t get much of his personality through the entirety of the story, what you get from the synopsis is pretty much all you’re going to get in terms of development. He isn’t likeable and his decisions are questionable at best. The love interests in this story also have very little development, who they are when you meet them is pretty much who they are at the end of the book.

Story wise it’s very generic and we don’t even get prominent side characters or any real progression to a story because there isn’t much more than the romance and forced comedy.

I’m sad I didn’t like it as much as I was expecting to. I actually enjoyed the MC character’s development and how well the author wrote it, but overall I caught myself having troubles liking him in general. On the other hand, I loved the side characters: from his family, hailey, logan, to his boss at the book store. They were so cool and well developed in personality.

I had some problems with the script part as well because I couldn’t care less about it, but I changed my mind at the end of the book where everything made sense to me. The last few chapters were what I wanted to read since the beginning and I couldn’t put my kindle down, which made everything better.

So maybe the problem was me? Lol. It’s definitely not a bad book, it’s good and I recommend it. Only adjust your expectations and go for it!

This is full of humor, pop culture references and summery vibes. This was a pretty light-hearted read and solid YA romance!

Trigger Warnings: Break-up, bullying, underage drinking, divorce, cheating, sick family member, Alzheimer’s, vomit

Representation: Gay, Queer

If You Change Your Mind takes place in the summer before Harry’s senior year of high school. He is still recovering from heart break and trying to finish his screen play to better his chance of getting into college. Harry’s world changes when he meets a new boy. Together we watch Harry work at his new job, get to know Logan, keep a secret from his best friend, and help his mom entertain his sisters.

This was an incredibly easy and quick read! This book gives great summer vibes and perfect to read at the beach! I loved all of the characters and the storyline was so cute! I felt the author did a great job developing layered characters, who have the room to grow, make mistakes, and learn from them.

I love when books have extras like Harry’s screenplay! I also really enjoyed each chapter being the name of a famous movie. While the book is being promoted as a love triangle, and I guess it could technically be one, I think the story is much deeper and really shows the maturity of these boys while so young.

Omg I loved this book so much!! A YA beachy summer rom-com? Sign me uppppp 💛 This is a great lighthearted read, and absolutely perfect to bring with you to the beach! I really liked our MC Harry. He starts off not in the best headspace and is a bit of an adorable mess, but he learns a lot and I loved all of the growth that happened with him throughout the summer! I loved Logan. Grant obviously wasn't my favorite. Foster though?! We need more Foster content ASAP!! (Please?!) Near the end of the book I wasn't sure which way it was going to end up ~ but I was so happy with how it did! Overall, this book was wellw rotten, heartfelt and I loved it! It is definitely one I will read again.

This was such an adorable debut and I am so happy I was able to get to read it this June!! Robby Weber knows how to write a contemporary love triangle because for the most part, I had no clue what team I was on: Team Logan or Team Grant! But obvi Team Logan had my heart for a majority!

Also love, love, love the rom-com movie references!!! That really spoke to me because I loved a classic 80s/90s/early 2000’s rom-com!!

This is definitely a beach/summer read, so take advantage of the hot sun and cool water and read this lovely novel!!!
