Unlike other women her age, Anna MacDonald has never set much hope in finding herself a husband. Far more important is the task of finding a position of employment... in a society that is untrusting of female doctors and that has so far proved challenging, to say the least. So, Anna resigns herself to replying to a collection of advertisements from men seeking mail-order brides. Who knows? Maybe one of them might even live in a town that would welcome her as a doctor— But what man would ever want a wife who places her career above family? Alec Jenks knows all too well the challenges that come with choosing a career of your own design. He was supposed to be a doctor like his father, but instead he chose the life of a blacksmith—much to the dismay of his mother. Now that his career is established in Iron Creek, Alec has come to think that it might be time for him to start a family of his own—but there is just one problem. With his overprotective mother still living with him, things might get a little complicated if he were to bring home a new wife. Alec knows that he needs to find the right woman—someone who will love him regardless of his meddlesome relatives. And when he receives Anna’s reply to his advertisement for a bride, he thinks maybe she could be just the one for him… If only she can survive his mother. The Blacksmith’s Mail-Order Doctor is a charming story of the challenges that come with life and love. With time, distance, and Alec’s meddling mother standing in their way… will Anna and Alec find a way to be together? Or is this just the beginning of the end?
Karla Gracey was born with a very creative imagination and a love for creating stories that will inspire and warm people's hearts. She has always been attracted to historical romance including mail order bride stories with strong willed women. Her characters are easy to relate to and you feel as if you know them personally. Whether you enjoy action, adventure, romance, mystery, suspense or drama- she makes sure there is something for everyone in her historical romance stories!
I enjoyed reading this novel. The characters were very interesting and well matched. Parents often impose their dreams on a child’s mind, making their decisions difficult if not impossible. These two were able to reach their happy ever after, thank you, Jack.
I found the title intriguing in this Kindle Unlimited offering. The book opens via a prologue with a date of May 1872 and a young woman, Anna Macdonald, determined to being admitted to Harvard medical school in Boston. (Curiosity made me do a quick search and the first attempt for women to even attend a medical class was in 1847. BTW, the answer was "no". For more, see https://jcsw.hms.harvard.edu/history.)
She is, of course, turned down. Anna is a farm girl; her parents are not wealthy. Anna has always wanted to be a doctor. It's not that she wouldn't like to be a wife & mother but not if it means giving up being a doctor. A bit of luck occurs ... she is admitted and graduates four years later, but must pick up her diploma at the office. No woman is going to be in a graduation ceremony even if she is number three in her class.
As hard as she fought to get her degree, she finds getting a position as a doctor even harder. She is turned down from Boston to Florida. She starts reading notices for doctors in the West.
In January 1876, Alec Jenks' introduction takes place at his father's graveside. His father, a doctor, leaves Alec and his mother who seems to have lost the will to live with her husband's death. Alec did not reside in Grand Marais, Minnesota with his parents. Despite their plans for their only child to be a doctor (first choice) or lawyer (only other choice), Alec is doing what he loves. What he has a passion for. He is a blacksmith in Iron Creek, Minnesota.
Alec only knows two things: he must return to his business and he cannot leave his mother alone. He tells her he needs her to help him. That he has little time for cooking, keeping his home neat and asks his mother to come home with him. She does. And never returns to Grand Marais. And by August, she is coming to the forge multiple times a day to check on him. Plus wanting a detailed report every evening on what happened during his work day.
How Dr. Anna Macdonald becomes a mail-order bride and how she deals with "mother" should be enjoyed by the reader, not divulged in this review.
"The Blacksmith's Mail Order Bride" is the second book in the Iron Creek Brides series. I enjoyed this easy read but was hoping for more "doctoring" by Dr. Anna. More focus was on the relationships between Alec and his mother. "Mother" and Dr. Anna. However, the author took a quite different approach to a mail-order bride story which made it an interesting read.
Anna McDonald had always wanted to be a doctor. Even though women were discouraged from attempting to go to medical school, Anna attended and did really well. When the time came to get a job as a doctor, she was discouraged because potential employers overlooked her. Most people thought women should not be doctors. She had also been overlooked as a potential bride in her hometown. She decided that she might have better luck in getting a job and a husband if she looked elsewhere.
Anna chose a prospective groom in a matrimonial publication and chose a man who seemed right for her. She wrote many letters but never heard from the man. Meanwhile, Alec Jenks had no idea that anyone was writing to him. No one wanted to consider him as a bride. What he did not know was that his mother made sure she collected the mail every day and she placed the letters in a box under her bed. Will Anna and Alec ever get in touch with each other?
Read this book to find out how they finally met! Did they find a match in each other? Read this book to learn about their finally meeting and the outcome.
I enjoyed this sweet book and I hope you enjoy it also.
The Blacksmith's Mail-Order Doctor is the second book in the Iron Creek Brides Series by Karla Gracey. This is an historical, western romance series with lonely bachelors, mail-order brides, adventure, challenges, sweet scenes, heartwarming moments, drama, and angst. Each book contains its own ‘romance’, following its own couple as they find their HEA. A mountain man, a blacksmith, a sheriff, and a stagecoach driver all have their own mail-order-bride adventures. And as the stories play out, we get to witness life in the ‘old west’. I did find it hard to fully connect with the characters and their stories because the characters inner dialogue/thoughts were quite frustrating at times, and then the stories lagged and dragged in parts making for more frustration. There was also a lot of repetitive information which kept pulling me out of the story in frustration. And while the stories have sweet and heartwarming moments, they are entirely predictable. But if you love Historical Western Romance, and don’t mind a little predictability, then this is definitely the series for you. Happy Reading…

There is very little mention of prayer or of God. There is mention of church, but not favorably. There are societal expectations related to Christianity, but nothing else. That said, this is a well-written story with engaging characters that keep me interested enough to continue the series. The story and plot aren't expressly original, but the details are. Female doctor in the old west, blacksmith who declined med school for his passion with metalworking and a lost, meddling mother make the center of the characters. There is a list of characters at the beginning which turned out to be preparation for who would be involved in the book. Each of them fulfill their respective this very well. Overall, a good clean romance, but not in the "Inspirational" category. Unless I've misunderstood, and clean = "Inspirational," not faith. That's the only reason I docked a star. -ncv
When Two Hearts Fall in Love....! Sometimes a guy just needs to be given a gentle (or maybe not so gentle) shove in the right direction. Funny how at times they can think up every excuse under the sun not to ask right question. What was going on between the Blacksmith, Alec Jenks and Dr Anna MacDonald gives us a rather delightful story which almost doesn't happen because of a meddling potential mother-in-law and a son who doesn't want to hurt her. The characters are quite real and well formed and you can clearly get the picture of what was happening. I'm happy to say that good communication finally resolved the problems and led to a happily ever after. I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of the book and this is my voluntary review of it.
Loved this book! Once I started reading, I was lost in it and finished rather quickly. This is the 2nd book in the Iron Creek Brides series. Alec Jenks is a blacksmith, and a tall bear of a man, who lives in Iron Creek. Anna Macdonald is studying to be a doctor in Boston. However, she is a woman in a time where only men are accepted as doctors, so she has quite a fight on her hands. Ultimately, she answers Alec’s ad for a mail order bride, and even though they are interested in each other, things happen to cause problems for them communicating. This is an exciting, twisting story with such wonderful characters. Very much worth reading. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.
This is fun mail order bride love story written by Karla Gracey. She has done a great job with this story. Anna has wanted to be a doctor since she was a child. Finally she is able to gain entrance in medical college and now to graduate as a doctor. The only problem is that none of the hospitals will hire a denial doctor. She considers being a mail order bride to a blacksmith only yo have that hindered by Alec’s mother. Alec goes to meet her in person with the town doctor along to offer her a job in the same town as he lives. She accepts to position. You will enjoy discovering how they find their happily ever after.
I read this book as an ARC and was so intrigued from the beginning. Life is not easy for women now but it was so much harder back in the 1800’s. Women were no more than third class citizens with no respect and no rights. Then they tried to show they could be so much more and people (not just men) were not pleased. This book is such a good representation of that struggle while also showing strength of spirit and character and fighting for the right to live your dream. An amazing read if you want a feel good book with some twists and turns along the way.
The Blacksmith's Mail-Order Doctor from Karla Gracey is a well-written book based on Christian principles. It is a fascinating story about 2 courageous people who go their own way. It is difficult in this historic time to be a woman in a profession and certainly want to become a doctor in a man's world. To find a woman who has her own profession and who does the household chores if necessary is very unusual among the lower class. Two very special people who have their own hearts find each other through a mailorder bride advertisement. A touching story to read.
Well written with some decent conflict. Not necessary to read the previous book.
My only complaint is I got a little bored with the "I'm a woman doctor and my profession is everything" talk. It was overkill.
The hero is a mamma's boy, but he stood his ground for the most part. He past relationship with his other could have been fleshed out to help the reader understand his point of view, and make him less wimpy (when it comes to his mother, otherwise he is not wimpy).
Overall it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend.
This book was very nice to read. Karla Grace wrote it very well. Anna only wanted to be a doctor nothing else. She attended medical school and became a doctor. Then realised she was not going to be able to get a doctors position close by and she was to go west. She answered an ad for a mail order bride from Alec. He was a blacksmith in a small town that needed another doctor. She was offered a position there. Then Alec’s mother did not like Anna. But Anna only wanted to be a doctor or did she? Very enjoyable read.
This was another quick enjoyable read by author Karla Gracey. It had many similar elements to the first book in the series but features a feisty female doctor who has worked hard to achieve her career goals in an era where women rarely took on such a role. In contrast, her future partner, though strong, caring and supportive of her career, came across as weaker due to a mother who was unwilling to let go of her boy. Fortunately all worked out in the end. It was nice to meet up again with familiar characters from the first book.
There is an unexpected twist in the last chapters.
I have enjoyed the first and second of Ms Gracey’s books about Iron Creek Brides. They have been hard to put down. This one about the Blacksmith and the Doctor was very good. It really brought out how hard it was for women back then to be doctors. I enjoyed Alec’s thinking about Anna’s abilities and her passion for a career in medicine. I like to try and figure out the endings of books but this one threw me. It didn’t end the way I thought it would. It was a better one! I really enjoyed reading this book and the first one in the series.
I enjoy mail order bride stories from the 1800’s. This storyline was entertaining however, I did not enjoy the main male character being represented as a mama’s boy. Every other aspect of this character was portrayed as a strong confident man, so the mama’s boy traits were confusing. I’ve noticed the way of the world today is to have a strong independent woman main character but why does the main male character need to be portrayed weaker?
I enjoyed the characters, Garrett and Anna, the story was moving along very well until about the last three or four chapters when out of his inaction, she became distant. I understand was due to his mother interfering, and his desire to please her. But when he finally did propose, I expectedmore in-depth feelings, and a romantic scene which seemed to fall flat. I still love the characters, but I felt like more could have been done with the conclusion of their romantic climax. Will continue the series. Good clean romance with historical accuracy and beautiful description of the area.
The Blacksmith's Mail-Order Doctor by Karla Gracey ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a lovely story about how to determine to follow your heart or your head with lives decisions. Anna struggles with wanting a to a Dr in a man's world. She is faced with many obstacles because she wants to be a Dr but also wants to be loved as much as she loves. In a time when a wife must quit her job to become a wife and mother, but why can't she do both.
Hope you decide to read this wonder book. I'm glad I did. I loved it.
So true. A woman who does not 'fit the standard mould' must fight for every inch of gain. This book shows clearly how true this is. Add to that a son's devotion to his widowed mother, which often destroys other relationships. This book shows how all this plays out in these character's lives. A thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish. Have found another author to follow! Recommend her work. Well done.
This was. Sweet and entertaining story. Anna graduated Andy became. Doctor, but she was not allowed to attend the graduation exercises because she was a woman. Alex was wanting a wife, someone to share his life with, but someone who would be satisfied with her own career and not be demanding he leave his work that he loved. Mail order bride was the solution.
Dr. Anna MacDonald is my ideal heroine, feisty, intelligent, independent, loving and loyal. Alex Jenks is almost the perfect hero, handsome, strong, independent, intelligent, talented, but he is also too nice and dependent on his mother. Okay he is a mother’s boy. That isn’t necessarily bad, but it also isn’t necessarily good. I enjoyed the battle of wits and determination between Dr. MacDonald and Mother Jenks. This book by Karla Gracey was fun to read and very enjoyable.
This was a 3 star rating until the H kept prioritizing his mother over his own courtship/future marriage. Heck, she even ended up getting remarried. Meanwhile, his relationship just fell apart because it took too long to get his mom "settled/taken care of", and he suddenly couldn't communicate while that was all going on. Psycho! Also, the author got a little too preachy about feminism, and it felt way too forced/regurgitated. It detracted from the story, and I ended up just skimming those parts.

I just finished this book and it was just as delightful as book one! I appreciated Anna's choice of wanting to become a doctor and still be able someday to be a wife and mother; that she wouldn't have to choose between the two seemingly contrary callings. She could have both, a career and a family. That is not uncommon now, but back then it certainly was. Even though it is fiction, I applaud the bravery. Another clean read that I would recommend.
Anna is a doctor, a profession not normally held by women in those days. Alec wants a wife, starts corresponding with her to have his mom interfere with it. Can he make it right. Will she forgive him and his mother. Will his mother accept her in her son's life? Great story.
This story had all the elements of a good mail order bride story, yet it is so much more. Anna's perseverance, Alex's need to please, his mother's stubbornness and Dr Lancelot's patience bring round characters to this story a d make it an interesting enjoyable read.
This book is quite different from other Mail order bride romances. In this one the bride USA doctor and wants to continue working and being accepted. I enjoyed that too he man she chooses has a mind of his own and loves his work. There are challenges read to see how they worked thru them. Enjoy, I did!!!
When one of the first women Doctors started looking for a job, she's ready to become a mail-order bride if the man is agreeable to accept her vocation as part of the marriage. When she finds the perfect person and place there's one huge problem... His mother! Good story. I really enjoyed reading it.
Great to read a story of a woman's struggle for acceptance in a man's world.
What a great character in Anna. With her fire and determination she shows her strength in going for what she wants and won't settle for less. I wish Alex was a stronger man not one to be ruled by his mother. But it wouldn't be a good story without the ups and downs.Enjoy!
This series seems to be a good read. It is interconnected but is a standalone. I can say I enjoyed it.
A blacksmith and a doctor at first glance but both are passionate about their work and Alec thinks that Anna could be a good choice as a wife. Bumps occur that almost break them apart.
A wonderful story about a mail order bride that has fought so hard to become a doctor. The characters were intriguing and entertaining. I was just a little disappointed in Alecs behavior a time or two, but it just added a little tension to the story.
