The Occidental Tourists: and other subcontinental sojourns

Rate this book
Read about the frightening consequences of being mistaken for a dead despot on a day out at the beach. Eating ‘crazy’ cookies for dessert in the desert? A back room brutalisation masquerading as massage. Walking barefoot on rodent faeces and a temple dedicated to Bach

When was the last time you lost a camel, let alone two? Saw architectural pornography? Upstaged Gandhi in his own house, or were made king for a day?

Read of horizontal rocket launches, the woman with two brains, enforced idol worship, extreme body piercing, burning corpses, mysterious skulls, threats of deity violence, hordes of naked men, and a nice cup of chai?

The Occidental Tourists - not your average collection of Indian travellers’ tales. Give it a go.

As the son of popular crime author R.D.Wingfield, Phil Wingfield carries on with the family tradition of successfully transferring thought to paper.
How many of us tourist have visited India and only just touched the icebergs tip of this mystical continent. How many of us have really strapped on goggles and held our breath to dive under the surface to experiance the hidden depths. and treasures that lay beneath. Phil has travelled to his India many times over a twenty year span.
A friendly word of caution - just be prepared to take that long, deep, breath before you plunge into this books fathoms as seriously your going to need to.
As you descend through the chapters Phil describes detailed accounts of the places he has visited and the people met. Join him as he reveals his anguish and emotions at the disparity between its peoples, its riches and its poverty. He makes us laugh at the absurdity and logic of us people as we wrestle with trying to understand this great continents culture. Phil has also included many pointers, information and photographs to sign post your way.
All to soon as your breath runs out and you finish this gem of a book you realise that you never quite descended to the very bottom..........and that my friends is Phils India.
I would defy anyone to read this book and not feel changed nor wish the book to end............. Take the PLUNGE, I dare you!

Not just a journey through India but a full-on, emotional and fully immersive experience travelling side by side with the Author.
Hilarious, sad, uplifting, shocking, thought provoking but beautifully written and observed. Packed with amazing photos of the wonderful and vibrant people met along the way.
Can’t believe a publisher has not snapped this up! A brilliant piece of work and a fantastic read!

An eye opening read!

I found this book to an eye opener to the realitities of India. The caste system was explained through the words of an eye witness across the decades. It has made me dig for more information on the societal issues of this country.
