Trevor Bostic and Mathew Brooks work freight for a living. They make the same trip once a month from the railhead at Bristle Buck to the town of Clear Creek. The trip this November though is anything but normal. Something on the wagon has a high value, a value that will be measured in bodies. Trevor and Mathew find themselves, and their eight mule hitch, alone and days from the nearest town. Can the two old teamsters find a way to survive long enough to finish the job they started?
Close to 4 stars. Reading this book is like eating meat and potatoes. Straightforward and satisfying. There is zero romance, which makes a nice change for a western.
The start was slow, but once you get to the two old guys arguing, it becomes entertaining. Easily the most entertaining character is Satan the mule, who punishes the wicked, like his namesake.
The number of characters involved was a bit confusing, and the plot was mess. The ending was abrupt, and a flop. But still worth reading.
In "The Trail," Nathan Wright has created a wonderful, unusual, western fiction tale. He has joined my new, favorite authors. His characters are really unique and unforgettable, laced with humor. The storyline is complex and engaging with all revealed in the end. I have already acquired another Nathan Wright tale with great anticipation of another unputdownable read.
Lots of twists and turns in this book! Very clever plot, especially at the end!
My idea of a good book is one with a good plot, interesting characters and believability. No curse words plays a tremendous part also. So you really delivered. I especially enjoyed the teasing back and forth between the teamsters. Especially the line about Billy needing protecting and being scared of the dark. I like how your mind works Mr. Wright. Keep up the good work!
This reads like a Western, but is a detective story, set in the West, well after the Civil War. It's a good story, even with some characters' unlikely luck, but the writing could be better, and it could use a good proofreader and editor. It wasn't a waste of money.
I thought this was a wlll crafted novel. Wright did a good job combining two complex stories that came together in the end. The finale was well hidden and I appreciated the part Judge Wicker played in the ruse. I did find it difficult to accept the plan put several people, e.g., the teamsters, in jeopardy to complete the ruse. I hope other Wright novels will prove to be as intriguing.
This is not a typical western. It is a well written story of corruption in Chicago, and the journalist who uncovered and wrote the story of two mob bosses. The setting is a small western town, in the late 1800's. Highly recommended. Love the mule.
This story began in a whirl wind and never let up. The characters are solid. This is a very good western. I enjoyed the way the author writes. This is my first book written by Nathan Wright. On my way to get another one. try if you won't be disappointed!
Sorry won't say anything except it's a fine story worthy of a read. All around good western detective short novel . Should have had texas rangers but would of been shorter
If this is the first Nathan Wright book you have read then you need to read them all. Every one of his stories has plenty of rowdy, get the job done characters, both good and evil, with sit on the edge of your chair suspense and action!!! You won't be sorry!!!
This was a pretty good read. Although I don't like books with no chapters. The two old freighters were good characters as was the sheriff, deputy and Walker. All and all three stars.
If took me a bit to realize that I was reading my very first western. I truly enjoyed all of the twists, turns and mystery that it offered. Take a chance. I am glad I did.
This is a story about grit and determination, and not giving up when things are bad. I don’t mean the book, I mean ME for finishing this slop. I should’ve stopped in the beginning when I knew what I was in for. I really like westerns, I really wanted to like this, but I couldn’t overcome the grammar or spelling errors and the poor writing. Sir name instead of surname, etc. I don’t think he had an editor, but I could’ve overlooked a LOT if the story was good, and it wasn’t. I finished it late at night and thought the ending made no sense so I re-read it the next morning making sure I wasn’t just tired - nope, it wasn’t me.
Excellent and very interesting read. I would highly recommend to anyone who likes a good western read. Great and interesting characters (my favorite was Satan- The Super Mule)
I enjoyed this book . It was quite different form most western stories. Did not no who to trust or believe. Anyway I hope to read more books by mr. Nathan wright.
