The Aces' Sons #7

Craving Kara

Rate this book
Kara MacKenzie has known since she was fifteen years old that the only way to protect the people you love is by telling them nothing.

She’d gotten good at keeping secrets.

The day Draco Harrison got out of prison she knew she was in serious trouble. It was impossible to keep secrets from the person who knew you almost as well as you knew yourself.

Her plan was to avoid him at all costs.

For nearly a year, she kept her distance.

She’d gotten pretty good at that, too.

There was only one small problem.

Draco had different plans.

This makes my heart hurt...but it is what it is.

I didn't think there would ever be a Nicole Jacquelyn book I would ever like less than Craving Trix...And yet, here we are.

description

And while I originally hated that book with the fire of a thousands suns, at least it firmly held my attention. Which, sadly, this book did not.

It pains me to say this about a Nicole Jacquelyn book, but I was solidly bored for at least the whole first half of this thing. Aside from the wildfire backdrop, pretty much nothing really happened plot-wise.

description

Also, I've read every single book in this series multiple times (even Trix) and I still feel like I needed a magical decoder ring and a family tree to keep track of who everyone was and how they were related/affiliated.

description

And I feel like the constant need to pay homage to every previous series character with nonstop familial banter took over almost every scene. Which, while part of me appreciated the fan service, another part of me was low key annoyed by it after awhile.

Although, nothing annoyed me more than Kara's character. In fact, I disliked her almost as much as I disliked Trix in Trix's book. And being that Trix is Draco's mom, I feel like the poor guy got the short end of the stick all around.

And here is where we come to what I feel is the crux of the issues related to spin-off series such as this one...

description

Your original characters have some legit backstory. They've been through some shit. But now we are dealing with the children and grandchildren of those characters. So the choices of the shit you as the author can put them through for character development is limited. I mean, you can't really have them experience overly shitty childhoods and/or childhood trauma, etc., because then you'd 1) fuck up previous character HEAs a la Susan Fanetti (which is kind of what happened in Craving Trix) and risk people swearing you off, or 2) make previous book leads look like shitty parents. Which is just...not a good look.

description

In addition, this third generation is being written almost awkwardly close to the original series' characters (who are supposed to be the grandparents of this book's demographic); and because those original characters were legit in their 20's a couple years ago as far as I'm concerned...the main characters in this book all feel very NA/YA...and whiny.

Or maybe it's just me.

Furthermore, this series is supposed to be about a one-percenter outlaw motorcycle club. And yet they seemed very weak in this book, both in action and general representation. I mean, I get that there were limited options for Kara to have the trauma required for this...storyline...but if they were as badass as we have been led to believe in previous books, I just can't see any high school boys messing with Kara. Period.

But anyway...All that said, I fucking love Nicole Jacquelyn. And I will continue to read every single piece of paper she even just takes a crap on. The tail end of this book definitely picked up for me and I did enjoy the writing.

Also, for those who are Madeline Sheehan fans, standby...the next book in this series will apparently be co-authored by the two of them. I've personally never been able to tackle Sheehan's Undeniable and thus continue with that series, so I'm a little leery about this forthcoming team event. Still, I have faith in Jacquelyn.

Oh boy, where do I start? I wrote this as an update and after finishing the book it still stands - Kara is annoying, irritating, exhausting and driving me bat-shit crazy. Her constant pushing away, clamming up and then the doozy when she took off when her family and friends were in crisis. Curt and Draco summed her up perfectly:

"She seriously took off?" Curt said, leaning back in his seat. "Jesus, what a time to do it." "No shit," I spat as I started the truck. "Her best friend's family home just fuckin' burned to the ground and she took off without telling anyone." Pure Kara. And poor Draco who not only had that in a mother (I'm looking at you Trix Craving Trix, but now has that in Kara. The poor bloke really needed to walk away and stay away.

This book had very little MC in it, so much so that I can't even call it biker lite. There were so many characters thrown in the story that even though I've read all the books in all the series I was so bloody confused at times. It was all too much.

Some of the books in these series have been absolute gold, this one was a clunker and the stars are all for Draco. Without him this would have been a DNF. 🤷‍♀️

So far, this one is definitely one of my favorites in this spin off series. I think it shares the top 3 with craving Rose and craving Cecilia, which both kicked ass as well!! No idea which one would be number 1 or 2 or 3... That all depends on my mood at the moment of reading I think 🤔

Anyways... I definitely recommend this series (and any other series by this author) and I can't wait for more!!

A well deserved 5 stars from me... So sad I am done..

sadly somewhere closer to 2.5 stars, Craving Kara just did not seem completely necessary to me... and no one wants to admit that less than I do :/

Don't get me wrong I love this Ace's world. It feels like a warm hug and something I know I will always pick up/return to. However, as I have been saying since book one of this spin-off, I am constantly having the circling thought process of "I never want this series to end" and "would it be better to say goodbye to these characters where they are at?". I know I don't want #2 to come true but I seem to be having the same problem in all of these spin-offs: confusion of who belongs to who (every time I pick up a spin-off book I feel like I was supposed to have reread the entirety of both series beforehand), poor plot development where we are typically just dropped into the story and expected to remember what happened to these couples four books prior (again left with the feeling that I need to reread), and a strong sense of longing for the heart, passion, and angst the og series brought. Do I like reading these books? absolutely!! but I know something is missing and I usually come out of this spin-off series feeling more disappointed than satisfied :/

I loved Draco and I loved Kara but I read and read and read and was never totally convinced of their connection or why they wanted to be together. It felt convenient to the greater story rather than something I really bought into.

I do not want to sound too negative here because this wasn't bad I just have such a high standard for this series that I can't help but get a bit disappointed. Nicole Jacquelyn is one of my favorite romance authors. This series/universe is one of my all-time favorites and I know *despite my irritations* I will never stop picking up the new releases. All of these things can be and are true but this spin-off series still feels like it is missing something... in the case of Craving Kara, it was missing character, couple, and plot development from my perspective. I just wanted more :/ I am hoping the next in the series is more of a success for me but I think this is pushing me to go back to what I know I love and start a reread of the og series soon ♡

I'm sorry to say two stars is being generous here. What on earth was this? And what is happening to this series? It seems to be on an infinite downward spiral of sorts. I was expecting so much more from Draco, and especially Kara. Kara is kinda taking the cake for loathsome FMC lead in a book. One word to describe her? Insufferable. Worse than Trix! Can you believe it?! Draco deserved better and I don't say that often because I'm careful with the FMCs I read in romance. I'm only hanging on here because I've made it this far and I'm hoping for a miracle. Kara has made it into the top 3 disliked FMCs for me atm. Well, she did have Rose as a role model growing up so. 🙄 I was waiting and waiting for some huge thing that happened to Kara and why she's treating everyone like the shit on her shoes. Lording over everyone like some dictator queen. She's not even blood related to any of them and she's talking back, disrespecting her elders, flicking everyone off etc. Anyways, back to what happened to her. By the time we got there I couldn't have cared less. That's how much she made me dislike her. To be honest. All the FMCs suck at this point in this series. Sorry for this review. This is just my disappointment coming out and being petty as hell.

NO, No,No. I usually love this author but this book was NOT good. Plot- terrible, heroine- irritating, Boring boring! Also, read the prior books, the author spent the whole book reminding us who was a dad, cousin, aunt. I don’t care!!!!

2.5 - 3 stars

I'm a huge fan of this series as a whole (1st, 2nd & 3rd Gen). But I have to say that Craving Kara fell short for me big time. Good lawd this chick gave me a headache. If it wasn't for Draco I would've left it at 2 stars.

Not nearly as good as the others in the series

Minus the epilogue, the book was a total letdown. The plot was that she was bullied? Seriously? The sex scenes were under developed as was the character development. And it was super hard to keep straight who is who without constantly consulting a family tree (that isn't included in the book).

I was pretty excited for this book after reading the Christmas book. But I ended up not liking Kara as much. I felt like this book didn’t have enough detail in it. I’m excited for the book that was mentioned after the epilogue!

Craving Kara was definitely a page turner! I couldn’t put the book down until I finished it around 3 am! I have been intrigued by Kara and Draco since their parents books who were Mack and Rose and Cam and Trix.

It’s been a little while since I’ve read the series so I was busy trying to remember who was who which did get a bit confusing at times because there were so many of them and although I’ve read the rest of the series it was still a bit insane to see Grease, Callie and the others be addressed as grandparents while Poet and Amy were great grandparents! Like holy shit, time fly by!! I can’t believe there’s a 3.0 generation now.

Now that it is 11 am and I’ve kind of processed the book. I am still not entirely sure how I feel about it. It’s a bit strange because I don’t remember Draco being older than Kara but like I mentioned it’s been a while since I’ve read these books. All I remember was her being 12 in Mack’s book.

I… felt bad for what Kara had to go through and I loved that Draco had always been utterly obsessed with Kara but… I don’t know. I honestly didn’t really like either character. I felt like the storyline lacked something more epic. It was a bit dull with what I felt like was unnecessary drama/details.

I wasn’t a fan of the people in their lives. It was like they couldn’t decide whether they actually wanted Draco and Kara together or not. It was like "oh yeah with the way Kara’s treating you, you should drop her cause it’s not really worth it.” When some of them kind of knew that there was something going on with Kara, that he knew something was wrong with her. I feel like when someone goes through some sort of trauma like that, they should only talk about it when they feel ready to talk about it rather than being forced to or having someone go through their shit to find out what it was. That’s an invasion of privacy and trust.

But then Kara was also super flighty so 🙃

I didn’t like Charlie at all but who knows maybe when her book comes out I’ll change my mind like I did with Cecilia.

Curt was… I don’t know I didn’t like him at times either. I mean I guess his feelings were completely valid back in high school, he wasn’t handling his twin brother being away that well and he was grieving that Kara no longer had a crush on him. He also didn’t realize the seriousness of the things that Kara went through during that time either or what fucked up stuff he said to her while he was blacked out drunk. I didn’t like how Trix handled it either but she also wasn’t handling Draco being gone well either which is completely valid and she apologized…it was still fucked up I guess.

Anyways that’s all of the points I can remember at the moment and will maybe update more as the day goes by as I continue to process the book.

I wish there was some sort of updated family tree! Tommy and Heather were my favorite couple and I wish we got to know how many kids they ended up having.

And I wonder who's book is next! Charlie and Bishop? Curtis?

I had such big expectations for this book but I was left so disappointed. The Christmas novella made me so excited for Draco and Kara's story but Kara was insufferable. Draco's been in love with Kara since they were kids but she had a crush on Curtis, Draco's twin brother. After Draco spent 4 years behind bars, you would think that Kara would want to be with him and spend time with him but she keeps avoiding him. My frustrations with her were the fact that she grew up around bikers who would do anything for those they love yet she kept suffering in secret. I understand that she was traumatized by Draco going to jail and the bullying from school but come on, the Aces' are ride or die kind of people. Charlie, her best friend who's 5 foot nothing is always ready to fight anyone who disrespects her family and Kara wouldn't even open up to her. Draco, was a great young man, he gave Kara her space in the beginning but then he decided that enough was enough and tried to get her to open up and face her demons. Draco dealt with a lot when he went to jail but he came out ready to be with the woman he loves. It was great seeing how everyone was doing, Farrah, Callie and Brenna were still around causing trouble. Amy and Poet were always there to give advice and love. I hate how everyone is everyone else's business but it's always like that in MC families. Draco fought his own twin brother because of Kara and was even mad at his mother Trix because of her. My last straw was when Kara left the state while the entire MC was dealing with wildfires that burned down her best friends' house. The epilogue was pretty great and I was so happy for Draco and Curtis and seeing a newer generation of Aces' coming up. But that ending had my jaw on floor because I didn't see that coming and I'm so freaking excited! My mind is going in so many different directions and I know this next book is going to be the craziest story. I really hope that I'm not getting my hopes up for nothing.

Not for me but the storyline was okay

This is the first book that I read in the series. It had an interesting blurb. It starts off good with Draco and Kara. They are high school sweethearts. Draco finds out that some guy made a video of Kara without her permission. Draco, even in youth, gets a bad judgment and has to go to prison. Kara has secrets, serious secrets that she has been hiding. Chapters go on and on, never is there a hint of these secrets. Kara keeps referring to these secrets over and over. Kara says multiple times that she feel guilty and doesn't want anyone to know about what happened, not her parents, her family, Draco, or Draco's family. Kara is wrong for not reaching out for help. Kara should have been sent to counseling after the video was sent out by students in her school. All the students should have been spoke to about unacceptable behavior and Cyber Bullying. It seems that they have such a larger family, someone should have seen Kara needed support after Crack went to prison. I really wanted to stop reading, but I was like what are these secrets? I will not spoil it in case you do want to read the story. Kara alludes to her secrets for 80 percent of the story before the author reveals what is happening to Kara. I did not enjoy this read.

I have a new MC man and his name is Draco. Ugh!!! This book was everything. I have been a fan of Nicole Jacquelyn’s writing since Craving Constellations. There are a few new Generation books I haven’t read but I am righting that little mistake ASAP.

Craving Kara just made me want to go back to the beginning. This book was amazing.

Also, that last page…. 2 of my FAVES?!? Omg. Omg. Omg. That’s all I got!

Love this series

Draco and Kara... Wow, what a story! Hard to believe everything Kara went through and that almost no one knew about any of it. Glad Draco made it home without too many scars and that he and Kara were finally able to find their HEA!!!

And that hook at the end.... OMG!!!!!

4.5 I haven’t read a book in this series in forever. I flew through it and really enjoyed it. I would of loved more explanation for her actions and what she went through. I was actually surprised she would be so bullied since her family is the mc. I also can’t believe how old the originals are. Ughh I hate that haha that’s why I don’t always ready the next generation books.

Angsty. A lot of history. You catch glimpses of these two in other books as kids. Their story is big drama. And it’s just so hard to understand why Kara kept him at arms length for so long.

I'm so disappointed. Kara was the worst type of heroine. Selfish, runs away when things get tough..a lot of times for no good reason, puts her own needs above others. The drama in this was so silly and melodramatic. She apparently had a thing with Draco's twin, but nothing was really explained well. I was left wondering "WTF"

I reread this again because I’m going through the entire series, starting with Brenna.
Oddly, I may be the only one who didn’t hate Trix, mostly because I understand ptsd and where she was coming from when she found about her pregnancy.

I however, could not stand Kara. She was horrible and indecisive. She was brutally idiotic and I hated her. Worst FMC ever.

Loved Kara & Draco.

I loved Kara and Draco's story, but was also incredibly frustrated by it. As you go through it you slowly learn the details of their relationship prior to him going to jail. This felt a little disjointed to me since it seemed like their relationship was one thing, only to then realize it was different from that and some of their actions didn't match up to that. There was also a bit of a dichotomy for me with the surrounding details of the story as well - on the one hand I loved the mentions of the fires, and catching up with all the past characters, but on the other hand it detracted somewhat from Kara and Draco's story. I would much rather have had a short story with the fires with all the characters, then had it be the backdrop for Kara and Draco because it felt like so many pages were spent on things that didn't move their story forward or relate at all to them as a couple.

I also found it incredibly frustrating that Kara's best friend, Charlie, seemed like the WORST friend ever. Again - a strange contrast between someone who had her back and defended her, but also embarrassed her and in a way that reflected someone I would want to avoid having to spend time with. She also didn't have her back when it mattered the most with Draco, and she never was held accountable for those behaviors, actions or words.

Kara's reasons for avoiding Draco may have been misguided intentions, but her fears and concerns were very valid considering her past and it seemed like no one fully acknowledged those concerns or really worked to help her through them versus just brushing them off and those who had already done her a disservice continued to do so by their words about her and how she was with Draco.

I cannot believe we are at the third generation of the Aces MC. I had mixed feelings about Craving Kara and I found it difficult to rate this second chance romance.

I didn’t really like Kara. It was exhausting and frustrating to see how she pushed everyone away and ran off when things got complicate. I didn’t understand her logic at all. She was selfish, inconsiderate and cowardly. Fortunately, Draco scored some major points in the likability of the main character. He was an Aces biker through and through. He was loyal, honourable, and reliable.

One of my favorite parts of the story was the familiarity and cohesiveness of the big Aces family, but it became too much. I felt like I needed a visual family tree in front of me to clarify the relations between all of the side characters mentioned in this book.

This book clearly missed the mark. If you were looking for some dangerous MC action, you would be disappointed. The only thing that got me excited again was the announcement that the next book in the series will be a cross-over with Madeline Sheehan’s Undeniable series, which is my all time MC favorite. I cannot wait to see what sparks they would create in this cross-over.

I volunteered to provide an honest review of an advance complimentary copy of this book.

Couldn't put it down !

I just couldn't put this book down ! From the first page I was hanging on every word. I loved Kara and felt heartbroken for her, and even mad at a couple of my favorite characters. And don't get me started about what a worthy hero that Draco turned out to be. I fell in love with him.

My point is that this was an absolutely wonderful book. As always the characters were amazing, and the story was compelling. This author isn't afraid of digging into sensitive issues in her stories. She has done so time and time again with the Aces, so Kara and Draco went through some hard stuff in this book. It was some real life stuff and while it was a rough ride in the end they got through it together. The love and the bond that they had for each other was absolutely wonderful.

I enjoyed everything about this story. Can't wait for more.
