Chad has escaped government prisons and half-angel fanatics to join with the Hospitallers, an ancient order dating back to the Crusades. But he's barely gotten started before he crashes (literally) into a plot involving strange mercenaries--Nephilim like himself--hunting down the Skofnung Sword, an ancient weapon of legend with amazing powers that could change the balance of power in Eastern Europe.
Thrown in with friends old and new, Chad soon finds himself falsely accused of kidnapping when he rescues Freyja Norjavik, a crippled arms heiress under threat of assassination. Chad's party must race across Europe pursued by the authorities, Russian commandos, and Freyja's two formidable sisters, as they seek to find the sword's elusive blade before it's too late. But there is a traitor in the party.
The second book in The Solomon Code series, this book follows on directly from the conclusion of The Nephilim Protocol. The Solomon Code series is an Young Adult/New Adult urban fantasy series centered on the legend of the half-angel Nephilim, which weaves together the folklore and history of countries around the globe
Urban fantasy / Steampunk author from Kalamazoo Michigan. Writer of "The Solomon Code" series.
JD Kloosterman spends his days teaching high school students and his nights writing the adventures of Chad Dickson, a half-angel teenager caught up in a millenia-old war. He also enjoys drawing and video games in his spare time.
The Hospitaller Oath is the second book in The Solomon Code series by J. D. Kloosterman. I haven't read the first book but managed to enjoy the story.
The main protagonist is Chad, who is a half-human, half-angel (Nephilim) who has only recently discovered his powers. This is an action packed fantasy with Chad having to fight his way out of trouble on many occasions.
The Hospitalers offer him some protection, and there is a magic sword able to cut through anything which adds an extra dimension to a story with many fascinating details.
Readers will particularly enjoy this if they like action packed fantasy stories which are humorous, well researched and led largely by engaging dialogue and fast paced interaction.
Personally, I found the characters a little difficult to relate to, and I prefer a different style of fantasy writing but the many entertaining aspects of the storyline kept me entertained. I am sure that the story will appeal to many fantasy fans.
The Hospitaller Oath is the second book in The Solomon Code series by JD Kloosterman. Although it follows on from the end of the previous book, there is enough information to understand the synopsis, so new readers will enjoy the story. The narrative is told by Chad, a half-human, half-angel (Nephilim) who has only recently discovered his powers. He also learns that some people want to destroy the Nephilim, and he finds himself fighting for his life many times. During his flight from danger, Chad meets the Hospitalers, who offer him some protection, before sending him out in search of a magic sword that can cut through anything.
The story contains all the elements of a typical Young Adult fantasy novel. Chad, a tall, gangly lad, is the unexpected hero, whose sidekicks are slightly annoying but faithful companions. Naturally, the author includes a love interest, which often distracts Chad from the task at hand. There are also the "bad guys" and people with ulterior motives, which shake up the narrative.
Unlike other fantasy novels that incorporate mythical and fictional beings into the story, Kloosterman uses real organisations in his work. Whilst the Nephilim are based on ancient stories, the Hospitalers are a real charity based in Malta, that are descended from the Knights Hospitalers who were charged with guarding the hospital in Jerusalem during the crusades. Although The Hospitaller Oath is not a religious book, many aspects stem from Roman Catholic beliefs.
Kloosterman also incorporated Scandinavian folk tales within the narrative, as well as aspects of science. One character, Freyja, suffers from a rare condition called Fibrodysplasia, which causes tendons, muscles and so forth to ossify (become bone) when injured. This illness plays a significant part in the storyline.
Throughout the story, the author references several other fantasy stories, such as The Hunger Games and The Mortal Instruments. Whilst this sets the story in the present day, some readers, particularly those in the future, will not understand the references, especially because the author only mentions characters from these books: Katniss and Clary. Referring to classic novels instead would make the story more accessible to all readers.
There are many printing errors (in the Kindle version), which are probably not the author's fault, but this does not detract from the gripping storyline. JD Kloosterman is an author to watch for all fantasy and science fiction fans. The author brings new dimensions to the genre by including items of historical relevance. The Hospitaller Oath is, therefore, both entertaining and educational.
If you like Percy Jackson and other books that show supernatural adventures for teens this book is right up your alley fantastic writing interesting action-packed absolutely a great teen novel.
Unfortunately I didn't like this book nearly as much as the first one. While the plot is still a very original and interesting idea, I didn't relate to the characters this time, and their individual speech mannerisms became very annoying very quickly. Destro/Gideon saying 'That is what I think' after every sentence, Levin's medieval speech and Freya's 'Um, ahh, sorta, I guess, kinda' etc all just seemed unnecessary and far too over the top. I was also disappointed that Chad didn't seem to have much character growth at all, still completely clueless by the end of two books. But saying that, I do appreciate all the historical knowledge and research put into the book and it was still a fast-paced adventure - It just didn't grip me as much as the first book.
I could not stop reading. The book is fast paced and packed full of amazing knowledge of old. It seems that Chad is more than he realizes. His journey is conflicted many times when friendships are tested, new and old. Will he ever find peace? That is yet to be answered. I highly recommend this book for teen to adult. I received a free ARC copy of this book for an honest review.
I completely fell into this book and could not put it down. A fast-paced supernatural action thriller that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next.
