Paige MacKenzie isn’t convinced there’s anything “sweet” about the small Gold Rush town of Sweet Sierra Gulch when she arrives in California to write an article for the Manhattan Post. But there’s plenty of history surrounding the gold fever that drew prospectors from afar in the mid-1800s, as well as the anticipation of romance when her favorite cowboy, Jake Norris, joins her later.Everything seems to be falling into place until the owner of the local cafe goes missing, a gruff guest checks into the hotel, and an odd humming sound prevents a peaceful night’s sleep. Determined to get to the bottom of the mysterious events, Paige begins to follow clues. Will her search uncover a dangerous secret in the town’s old mining tunnels, or will her curiosity land her in over her head?
Deborah Garner is an accomplished travel writer with a passion for back roads and secret hideaways. Born and raised in California, she studied in France before returning to the U.S. to attend UCLA. After stints in graduate school and teaching, she attempted to clone herself for decades by founding and running a dance and performing arts center, designing and manufacturing clothing and accessories, and tackling both spreadsheets and display racks for corporate retail management. Her passions include photography, hiking and animal rescue. She speaks five languages, some substantially better than others. She now divides her time between California and Wyoming, dragging one human and two canines along whenever possible.
Ah, Paige, it’s so good to see you again! I’m really glad you’re back. You’ve matured a bit, which is to be expected, but you still have that target on your back for trouble! Oops. It’s a book. Sorry. I’ve followed Paige through so many adventures that she almost seems real. This is one of her best adventures. Buy the book. Enjoy!
An intriguing mystery with a little history thrown in
Deborah Garner has done it again. I absolutely loved the book and couldn't put it down. While it is a series, it can work as a standalone. I highly recommend the whole series.
Yes, Paige is back and certainly didn't disappoint. She has been dispatched by her newspaper to write a story somewhere in California. She picked the small town of Sweet Water Gulch (pop. about 1,000) to start because of its history during the Gold Rush. As is her usual practice, Paige befriends townspeople to gather local history for her story. And as usual as well she starts to pick up vibes about something strange going on and can't help digging for information. In the meantime one of the well-loved business owners has gone missing.
Jake arrives from Wyoming as preplanned and the two of them do some exploring of wine country but end up back in town determined to get to the bottom of the mystery disappearance.
I really love this series and hope it doesn't take too long before Paige returns!
I don’t understand the higher ratings. I love cozy mysteries; however, this one is extremely slow and very lack-luster. I strongly disagree with leaving storyline details. Yet, in good conscience, I feel potential readers should have another avid reader’s viewpoint. Boring facts of the book’s main highlights (from the 39% of the book which I have read): Freelance writer staying in old gold rush area’s small town, sweet people, 49er’s museum, pizza, 1 tourist trap, cowboy boyfriend coming to join her for mini-vac, and a cafe owner’s disappeared w/o any reason/evidence. No true hoopla even about that!
Paige MacKenzie is back in Sweet Sierra Gulch by Deborah Garner and I am thrilled. Paige's latest adventure is filled with the history of the gold rush days and I enjoyed reading about the miners and merchants who founded the small towns dotted around northern California. Paige has quite a mystery to solve when a local cafe owner disappears. A well crafted plot with only a few suspects and a community that Ms. Garner brought to life as Paige talks to the residents for her magazine article. Ms. Garner's descriptive writing allows me to take a vacation through Paige's adventures.
The Paige Mackenzie mysteries are softball reads and I’m here for them! The usual formula with an easy to digest story line, they are not my usual genre but somehow I’ve got hooked on these books.
Per usual, Paige gets herself in a jam as a result of her sleuthing while following her intuition that something is amiss. Lots of quirky characters, little bit of history, romance , and mystery solving. Can’t wait for the next one.
Excellent installment in this series about a travel writer who is writing a series of articles about the Old West. This time Paige is in a tiny town that was established during the California gold rush. While investigating the disappearance of a cafe owner, Paige finds herself involved in other suspicious activities and ends up in trouble. Boyfriend Jake, who flies in from Wyoming, adds a fun element to this story.
Loved the characters, the descriptions, the strange feelings interjected to set up for the mystery. Paige has good instincts and is a great detective. The mystery was also a hard one to solve. Enjoyed the book immensely and would love to visit Sweet Sierra Gulch!!!
Things aren't always as they appear at first glance. Sweet Sierra Gulch presents as a dusty back woods settlement but once the dust comes off, things are far from serene. People aren't whom they appear to be and circumstances begin to unravel. One mystery after another evolves into a true viewing of the little town and her citzens.
Love the descriptive history and location of this mystery! It is in a town that has seen many changes over the years due to the Gold Rush and the ensuing history that followed. I not only found it an intriguing mystery but an intriguing view of a town that was created during the Gold Rush.
Panning for gold is Paige 's newest adventure. This little town could not hold any mysteries. Paige 's intuition says wait a minute. Two girls not happy in their jobs, Red is a little bit of a mystery. Jungle disappeared. Can Tommy find him. Will Paige get in trouble again.
As always Deborah Garner spins an entertaining story filled with interesting characters. I love the history she adds. I look forward to another Paige MacKenzie story.
Paige takes an assignment in California in the small Gold Rush town of Sweet Sierra Gulch. I loved all the characters in this story and all the history of the California Gold Rush. Of course, Paige just cannot stay out of trouble! I really enjoyed this adventure! Deborah, I need more Paige!
I enjoyed this series not only for the the fact that they were quick enjoyable reads but the historical content. I also like that the series was short only 6 books. Ten is generally my limit.
