My best friend is basically my dream girl. Too bad I can’t have her.

As a Marine who jumps out of perfectly good airplanes for fun, you could say I’m fine with taking risks. But not when it comes to Shelby.

For years, I’ve been firmly in the friend zone, right where she wants me. And since I won’t risk our friendship, that’s where I’ll stay. But I can’t pine over her forever.

When I propose to my girlfriend and get rejected in front of the whole town, the joke’s on me. Turns out proposing to the wrong woman because you can’t have the right one is a bad idea.

Shelby’s always had my heart. Can I convince her to trust me with hers?

The Proposal is the first book in a sweet, small town, military romance series. Each book is a standalone romance but they are fun to read in order!

Oh my goodness, there were so many parts in this book that touched my heart and made me want to break out the tissues. An excellent start to a new series with a great cast of characters I can't wait to read about. Plus, you get to see some old favorites from previous series. This book had everything I have come to expect from Jess Mastorakos and made for a 5 star reading experience.

*I received an ARC copy from the publisher. My review was not required nor influenced.

Adorable historia de amistad y amor.

The Proposal de Jess Mastorakos serie Brides Of Beufort libro 1

Argumento:

Me gustó...

No me gustó...

The Proposal by Jess Mastorakos is the first story in her Brides of Beaufort series. It is a delight. Paul is a Marine currently stationed in Beaufort, South Carolina, and Shelby is a dance instructor who has HCM, a heart condition. Shelby and Paul have known each other since middle school, and both believe they will always be in the friend zone with the other.

“There was nothing but friendship between us. Case in Point, the fact that she’s set me up with her coworker when I was home for Christmas “. Paul.

Oh, what a lovely romance between two best friends who are trying to navigate something different. The author does a great job with the alternating POV’s and had me rooting for Paul and Shelby from the beginning. This story has sweet romance, airplane jumps, and flash mobs that will make you smile. I loved the ending and can not wait for the other books in this series. I highly recommend it!

I was given a complimentary copy and not required to write a review.

A New Series!

Another fun story by this author, filled with all the things I look for in an escape reading session. There was attraction and moments that made me smile. With the great cast of secondary characters, I know that there will be more great stories on the way. I enjoy this author so much!

I have mixed feelings on this story. The friends-to-lovers trope was sweet. I love Paul’s care for Shelby. Romance aside, he’s the kind of friend you want in your corner…he’s a touch overprotective at times, but it’s sweet.

As someone who deals with chronic illness, I related to Shelby on many levels. It’s a major life changer and affects so many things - dreams and relationships - and it’s easy to live in fear. Mastorakos represented this aspect well.

The things I didn’t care for…Shelby proposes to Paul. To me, it was just weird. And there was some language…not swearing just not all polite words, I guess.

Overall, there was some sweet moments and parts I enjoyed, but it wasn’t my favourite novel written by the author.

Content: mentions of swearing but words are never used; alcohol consumption; kissing and physical attraction mentioned

Slightly disappointing (considering my high expectations - this is Jess Mastorakos, after all). I did like the relationship, its depth and growth, and also the fact that there were some heavier issued tackled. The secondary characters were also well written and I am looking forward to the next installment(s). What put me off was the ending, which was based on a scenario I hate (can't really help it).

Anyway, a good book, worth reading, just probably not re-reading as far as I am concerned.

This was the perfect beginning to what will be an amazing series! Even though this book was completely sweet/clean Jess was able to make sure we knew these two had chemistry. I loved both Shelby and Paul. It’s weird, but sometimes I personally don’t feel like the names match with what I imagine for the characters, but not with this book. Paul was this amazing, thoughtful, caring, hunky marine who was head over heels in love with his best friend. Shelby had some major challenges in her life that made her feel less than ideal for Paul. Her love for him was so evident. Please excuse me while I now go binge read all of Jess’s books now that I’ve finally read one of her books…what took me so long?

Jess Mastorakos has started yet another new series on such a high note. Admittedly, it did feel weird having to get to know a new group of people but that's part of the fun of starting a new series. Some familiar faces popped in from other series by this author, which always feels like a family reunion for a reader who's been around from early on. But don't worry, you won't feel lost if this is the first book you've read by Jess Mastorakos, though I'd highly recommend adding more of her books to your TBR in that case!

Paul and Shelby have been friends for a long time. With Shelby's life altering health condition, Paul has seen her at some low points but there's nowhere else he'd rather be. But because of the unknowns that come with her health, Shelby has him squarely in the friend zone. He deserves better doesn't he? Things certainly take a turn though when Shelby helps him plan a flash mob proposal (for someone who is not her which she is not a fan of) but the lady in question says no! This leads to them facing some long buried feelings.

I was so excited to start a new series by Jess Mastorakos and it didn't disappoint. I don't think I will ever get tired of these books. I love getting to know the new characters and getting glimpses of familiar faces. The chemistry between the characters is just written so fantastically. I can't wait to see some of the other couples we've received hints of and to see what is next for Paul and Shelby.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.

I absolutely loved this book. The fierce and genuine connection Shelby & Paul share and the absolute beauty of their friendship provides a rock solid base to build this engaging story off of. This book has it all, romance, best friends, family, and vulnerability. Once you start reading you won't want to put it down, the pages will just call you right back! I didn't just read this story, I lived it and completely understand both sides of their fears. Heart disease runs in my family on my dads side and two of my dads sisters practically owned their own wing in the cardiac unit of a local hospital of our hometown in SC lol. While I don’t have HCM like Shelby, I do have IHSS and deal with extreme shortness of breath and constant fatigue (and was actually supposed to have a pacemaker put in 16 years ago but getting rid of the major stress in my life took care of the majority of the issues I was having at that time.) The research that went into Shelby’s HCM was as if Jess or someone she is very close with has it. Jess combined life's events with medical occurrences in a masterful manner. I can’t wait for the rest of the books in this series!! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Um yes, this book was amazing! I have been in such a bad reading slump that even the books I love take a couple of days to finish, but I finished this book in one day! The Proposal is the first book in Jess Mastroakos new series, Brides of Beaufort. It was such a sweet and fun read!
Paul was ready to take the next step in his relationship with his girlfriend and propose, but when she rejected him, his plans went down the drain. Thankfully he has a best friend who will stand by him, Shelby. Shelby has been in love with Paul since high school but because of her heart condition, she has kept him at arm's length. But when they are drawn back together, they throw caution to the wind and decide to try and make a relationship work. Will their relationship survive or are they destined to just be best friends?
Shelby was so cool! She was strong and she cared about others deeply. She was kind but she was also more closed off, she let few people really into her life. However Paul was one of those people who would stand by her against anything. She had some health issues so she was worried about life. It was interesting to read about Shelby as she was navigating life with her health condition, it did not define her but it was still a part of her. I loved reading about Shelby as she learned to let Paul into her heart and how to learn life to the fullest. She was just a wonderful character.
Paul was a sweetheart. I adored his relationship with Shelby and how he cared for her, he was so sweet. I also liked reading about his interactions with his family and friends. Paul just wanted the best for Shelby and he was trying so hard to be a good friend. It was differently cute to read about him caring for her and just being a great friend. I loved reading about them falling in love. Paul had to figure out what it meant to be in a relationship with Shelby and how to make her feel loved.
Shelby and Paul were such a sweet couple together and I loved that they were friends first. They had a comradery and it was just so cute to read about them interacting. I also adored the side characters. Paul’s sister was so much fun and the other friends were also great! I think I have an inkling of who the next book is going to be about, I don’t know how I am going to wait to read it. :)
The Proposal was everything that I had hoped for and more! I adored the characters and the storyline. Shelby and Paul tugged at my heartstrings and I would totally recommend it! The Proposal was just an amazing book!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.

Oh my heart! Y'all! I can't even with how much I loved this book! I think I had the world's largest goofy grin on my face and I lost count of all the dreamy sighs I let out while reading.

If I had to describe this book in one word, for me, it would be perfection! I found myself reading late into the night and waking up way before the sun even thought about rising just so I could dive back in.

Shelby and Paul are the best of friends and have secretly been in love with each other since high school. However, difficult circumstances beyond her control has Shelby putting and keeping Paul strictly in the friendzone.

However, a rejected proposal will have Shelby and Paul finally opening their eyes to see what's been right in front of them the whole time. But in order for them to get their HEA, they're going to need to learn how to face and deal with a hard situation, together.

My advice to all who read this book is sit down, buckle up, and enjoy the ride that you're about to embark on. There's a good chance you'll find yourself laughing, shedding a few tears, giggling, swooning, and letting out little dreamy sighs. But one thing I know for sure, you will not regret immersing yourself in all things Shelby and Paul!

This is such an amazing start to what I'm sure is going to be another phenomenal series by Ms. Mastorakos! I cannot wait to see what she has in store for the rest of the Brides of Beaufort stories!

And of course I can't forget my casting! What do you think?

Wow! What a way to start off a new series. This starts in a small town back east/south. Shelby and Paul have been best friends since high school. When Shelby was diagnosed with a life threatening condition at 15 years old, she was determined to never give anyone her heart. She was secretly in love with Paul but she didn't want him to give up his dreams for her when she couldn't give him what he had always wanted.

When Shelby firmly put Paul in the friend zone at their high school prom, he tried to move on and was even ready to propose to another woman but when the proposal didn't turn out how he envisioned it, he couldn't get Shelby off his mind and what if he could convince her that he still wanted her more than anyone else? Would she finally be willing to give him a shot?

This book was engrossing and kept me reading well past my bedtime to finish it. I love a strong woman and I love a man who can protect without being overbearing. This story had all of that and more. It is a clean, wholesome read with a happy ending and a wonderful story to tell.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

THE PROPOSAL is #1 in the new The Brides of Beaufort series. It is a standalone read with a happy ending. There are no sexy scenes or colorful language so any age can read and enjoy. It is a great love story with a few good informational lessons. Not preachy, just part of the story. It is set in N. Carolina with scenes at the Marine base.

Shelby, 29 has a heart disease, HCM. She was diagnosed at 15 and all of her lifelong dreams of dancing in New York were over. She was naturally devastated and only shared her condition with Paul, who became her best friend. Paul was the weird guy in school, just different but we all know how that goes. He was with Shelby from the very first and they became very close best friends. He knew how to help her when she couldn't help herself. He saved her life a time or two. As they aged Shelby knew she was in love with Paul but she wouldn't burden her best friend with a girlfriend that was so damaged. She let him know best friends was all it would ever be.

Paul, a paratrooper in the Marines left home because he knew he couldn't see Shelby every day knowing he could never have her in his life permanently. Eventually he moved on and was prepared to settle for Roxie even going so far as to propose to her. But best laid plans don't always work out.

This is a very good story that includes information and lessons in HCM. Personally I never knew it existed until reading this story. Now I am better informed and aware that some suffer from this disease that effects them emotionally as well as physically. It is a very good read and a great start to a new series. I found it to be very entertaining and informational. I definitely recommend it.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 12/21/2021

The Proposal is the first book in the Brides of Beaufort series by Jess Mastorakos. Paul Bristol has been friends with Shelby Thompson since grade school; however he fell in love with her in high school. However, she firmly placed him in the friend zone. He settled on being her best friend. Now as a Marine who jumps out of airplanes for fun, he is not afraid to take risks, except where Shelby is concerned. When his public proposal to his girlfriend ends with rejection, he learns that proposing to the wrong woman because you can’t have the right one is never a good idea. However, Shelby is hiding a secret. She loves Paul as well but living with a life threatening condition, she doesn’t want to be a burden. Shelby has always had Paul’s heart, can he convince her to trust him with hers?
The Proposal is a clean romance with plenty of drama, banter and deep issues. From the very beginning, I enjoyed Shelby and Paul’s characters. Shelby is learning to deal with a life threatening condition. I had never heard of this condition and the author does a great job explaining the condition without being overly technical. I loved Paul as a man who knows what he wants. I love how he shows that he wants Shelby and that supporting her as she deals with her condition is not a burden. Together, they were sweet. I also enjoyed their supporting characters and hope they get their own stories in the future. The great gesture at the end is very sweet and romantic. Overall, I enjoyed this story and I look forward to the rest of the series. If you enjoy clean military romance, I highly recommend The Proposal.

The Proposal is available in paperback, eBook and audiobook

A Wonderful Friends to Lovers Romance!

Reading The Proposal by Jess Mastorakos was like being on the journey from friends to lovers along side of her main characters, Paul and Shelby. Buckle up as this book is an emotional, spiritual roller coaster that had me in tears one moment , laughing and swooning another. It was great feel good, happily ever after, book that captured my attention from page 1!

As a retired nurse who has lived and worked with people with chronic life threatening illness, I was especially enthralled with how Jess Mastorakos weaved the issues of living with chronic condition, into the lives of her main characters. I had to wonder if Jess had sat in on some of my support groups! Shelby and Paul were the perfect voice for the fears, the vulnerabilities of both the person with the condition and the people who love them. Shelby and Paul's struggles were so real, I could easily relate. And to have them come together with their personal happily ever after at the end, filled me up with hope and love. The Proposal made me believe again, that dreams really can come true!
The romance was sweet with just enough heat to make you tingle a little. While part of a series there are no cliffhangers. But as the setting is a small town, Jess Mastorakos, skillfully introduces you to possible future love matches as part of The Proposal story.

The Proposal is magnificently written and well worth your time to read it. As part of Kindle Unlimited it was also very economical! Most importantly, it was a very entertaining!

I think what I enjoyed most about this book is how easy it was to see the main characters together. Friends-to-lovers is one of my favorite tropes and this book is exactly why. It was easy to picture them together and frustrating when neither of them realized they were meant for each other. The way the story started was really frustrating to me, because I couldn't stand to see these two apart. Of course, like any couple they have things they had to work out together before they could find their HEA, but even those challenges felt so natural.

They weren't my only favorite characters in the story. No, Aria and Will both had a strong presence in this story and I know they will be in the next book, but I don't want to wait to find out what happens with them. I enjoyed how they both brought a lot to this story and made it all seem like one big family.

I did find the story to drag on a little bit at the beginning, then at times, everything moved a little too quickly. I think some of the later moments in the book I would have liked to see drawn out a bit more. Other than that, I really did enjoy the story and fell in love with these characters. Getting more about them in the later books is a must, because I have to know everything about them. I'm really excited to see where things go in the town, with all of the characters.

I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

UGH!!!! This book was such a SNOOZEFEST!! The amount of times I got distracted reading this book is actually really sad. I was counting the pages until the end. There was just nothing about this story that held my interest. It was waaay to ... vanilla. And don't get me started on Shelby's heart condition. I feel like they talked more about that than their actual relationship. Like I get it, but that still doesn't make it more enjoyable to read about. The only reason I gave this book 2 stars is because, while it was very boring, it was still readable and I was able to finish it. There were some good moments in there, but even those good moments fell short.

These were some of my thoughts while reading:
- I wonder if this authors rambles a lot in real life because her characters sure do
- maaaaaan what a snoozefest - it's so boring and slow so far
- there should have never been more than 1 chapter before the failed proposal
- theres too much backstory, the synopsis told us everything we needed to know, lets get on with it already!!!!!!!
- it's sooooo obvious the next book is about Will and Aria, it's kind of annoying - maybe their story would've been better than this one. Literally just finishing it for completion
- HATED that the epilogue was just a preview for Aria and Will's story. But at the same time Paul and Shelby's story was so dry there was nothing I wanted to know about in an epilogue

MY TAKE
Man. The feels. Mastorakos made me feel the pain both Paul and Shelby were going through after all these years of loving the others. And she did a great job of keeping him in the friendzone. She had decided years ago that he deserved someone who didn't carry a timebomb in her chest, a woman he could be sure to have a future with. And she convinced herself that if he could find happiness with his current girl friend that Shelby would support it all the way.

Except he gets turned down. Then he makes a comment that more than implies that he has feelings for Shelby. And a friend tells her she doesn't have the right to be making the decision for him. Which sets a ball in motion to a possible happily ever after. Maybe.

Lovely ending that just made me smile!

The Proposal by Jess Mastorakos is the first in the new series of small town military romances, Brides of Beaufort. Shelby and Paul have been best friends since school but after finding out about her heart condition she tells him they are just friends so he is not subjected to living with her situation. To avoid living in the same town, he joins the military and finds a girlfriend. Shelby gives up her dream of dancing and gives dance lessons instead. She arranges a dance proposal for Paul and his girlfriend, but when he is rejected, Shelby is there to be a friend.

This is a well written fun story to read. This is a sweet romance story that focuses on chronic health situations and how they affect not only the person with the condition, but others in their lives. This story also shows that true love does endure and last despite distance and hard situations. I enjoyed reading how Shelby was able to live with her health condition and how she managed to live independently with limited resources because of it.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, this is my honest review.

I loved, loved, loved this book! I hated for this book to end! What a great start to a new series! This is a stand alone HEA. Paul and Shelby have been best friends since high school when she confided in him about her heart condition. The both had feelings for each other when Shelby made the choice for both of them that they would just be friends. Paul is a marine who is now back in town and has Shelby setting up s flash mob for his proposal to another girl. He is rejected and they both start to acknowledge the feelings they have for each other. Of course, the whole town has seen their feelings for each other before them! You also get to see some cameos from the authors other books which is great. There were tears and laughter in this book and I just wanted it to keep going. The setting was great and the characters strong. The author is descriptive that you are pulled into the story as if you are right there. I highly recommend this book! I can’t wait for the next one! I was a volunteer ARC for this book for an honest review. You can never go wrong reading any of this author’s books!

Shelby has had a dangerous heart condition threatening her life since her teenagerhood.
When she first learned the diagnosis, she skipped a class to cry on a bench: she was a good student, a dancer athlete and she had to put a lid on her dreams... Bad boy Paul was, on the other side, used to ditching. He found Shelby on this bench that same day and they became inseparable. The best kind of friends ever. Even if they were so different, he helped her a lot through the rough changes in her life.
More than a decade later, he’s become a Marine and wants to propose to Roxy, his girlfriend. Shelby became a dance teacher when she couldn’t pursue her dream to become a professional dancer due to her heart condition. She organizes Flash Mob Proposal on the side to make a little more money.
When Paul plans his proposal, he asks her to choregraph a flashmob to help him in this life changing moment…
I loved the story, I loved the characters. I just finished the book and I can’t wait to read #2 in the series because I already miss the characters. I’m never disappointed with Jess Mastorakos’ books!

Shelby has always wanted to be a professional ballerina. In high school, she is diagnosed with a heart condition. Her dreams are shattered. She knows that she will deal with this the rest of her life and determines that she shouldn't marry. Paul finds her crying at school and she tells him her story. They become good friends. Paul has been in love with her for years, but knows he can never have her.

After high school, Paul joins the Marines. It's 10 years later and he's back in Beaufort. He's been dating long distance and decides to propose. Shelby has a flash mob proposal business. So she plans the proposal. She's happy for Paul, but heartbroken too. When Paul's girlfriend turns him down.....the videos go viral. He's not that heartbroken. He was "settling" anyway.

Finally he and Shelby realize what they've been denying for years. They finally take the step to more than friends, but then Shelby's heart issues flare up again.

Such a great book! I won't spoil the end, but the end it the best!!!

Super excited for this new series from Jess Mastorakos, who is one of my favorite authors!

Paul enlists the help of his best friend Shelby to propose to his girlfriend Roxy using a flash mob. Only problem is, Paul isn't 100% certain Roxy will say yes. When she doesn't, Paul doesn't feel as broken-hearted as he expects, because he slowly is realizing that he is actually in love with Shelby.

Shelby put Paul firmly in the friend zone after high school due to a medical condition involving her heart. What she's never been able to admit to him is that she's actually very much in love with him. Once they finally admit their feelings, they ease out of the friend zone and into love.

As always, I loved it, and I can't wait until Aria and Will's book! (Not gonna lie, I started thinking midway through Paul and Shelby that Aria and Will might be next, and I'm so excited that they are!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Oh, what a great story! I loved Paul and Shelby's story. They meet at school when she is upset over the news of a heart condition she's been diagnosed with and he is skipping class. They become best friends and he is always there for her. He begins to feel strong feelings for her and she does for him but feels that with her condition that she wouldn't be able to give him the life that he deserves. So she tells him that she really likes him as a friend and he's like a brother. Paul joins the Marines to get away but comes back when he stationed close by. They pick up as friends where they left off. After some situations and time, she finally admits that she loves him too and they decide to face things together as a couple than apart. It is truly a great start to another series. I can't wait for Will's story now!

Love Overcomes

Shelby and Paul have been friends since they were teenagers. Paul has always been there for Shelby, who was diagnosed with HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) when she was 15. She has always loved him and placed him in the friend zone, so he could marry someone healthy and have children some day.

Shelby arranges a flash mob dance proposal for Paul so he can propose to his girlfriend, Roxie. It doesn’t go as expected. Paul decides to let Shelby know how he really feels about her.

Paul and Shelby have to deal with her heart issues and what that may mean for the future.

The story deals with a chronic illness and the effects of that illness on Shelby and those she loves. It is a sweet romance between a Marine and a woman he loves. I am looking forward to the next book in the Brides of Beaufort series.

Paul has just had the worst day ever, not only did his work day go bad but he had a whole flash mob proposal planned and his girlfriend said no! His best friend Shelby arranged it with her business. In The Proposal, Shelby and Paul have been friends forever and Paul would love things to go further but Shelby doesn’t think she could ever give Paul the life he deserves. She has major health issues involving her heart and it has curtailed her life! Maybe it’s time for the two of them to finally admit to each other true feelings and set the health issue on the back burner! Love watching friends become lovers! What a fun book and great start to the series. This is the first in the Beaufort series and I can’t wait to see what happens when Paul’s sister Aria has to deal with her crush Will, Paul’s best friend!
