In Earth's decline, the drone keeper lives by his own rules...until someone notices and then he must depend on both beauty and death from the thing he loves most.
My reading contains a percentage of free books where the author is giving the book away for free in order to get reviews. This book is one of those. For these free books that I do not finish, I do not leave a review. I feel that if I did not finish the book, I really have no standing to leave a review. This book is the opposite of that, the book dropped me rather than me dropping the book. The story just stops. In a single paragraph the author kills the main character and writes 'The End' without his body falling over and hitting the ground. There is no wrap-up to the story line and the five secondary characters are left in the middle of the plot.
Secondly, this book needs an editor in the worst way. The numerous errors made the reading difficult at times and the errors are numerous in nature. I suspect that this short story was dictated and that the author trusted the computer to get things right. I was going to give this book a single star based on the lack of editing alone. However, while reading I was enjoying the plot so much that I was thinking that I would give it five stars regardless of the lack of an editor. Then the book just ended. It was like the author had decided to leave and do something else.
These chapters would make a wonderful introduction to a great story. The plot is well underway and I urge the author to carry on and build the rest of the story (but do not kill the main character, at least not so early in the story). Final note: I was unable to locate any additional books of the presumed 'Watch the Wreckage' series.
I'd read the Author's regular email installments of the Drone Keeper and was hooked! But that was a far different story from this one. This one was an addictive tale from the getgo. Dystopian thrillers are so intriguing to me and I just gotta read them all the way to get the "fix" of the ending. This one did not disappoint! Ms Shaw has a creative writing mind and seems to have a penchant for writing stories that seem (far) futuristic but really aren't. (Remember the China Pandemic?) Keep it coming!
The Drone Keeper: A Dystopian Crime Mystery Thriller (Watch the Wreckage Book 1), my first read from author A.R. Shaw, was a 3-hour 29-minute/143-page read that captured my attention and kept me reading until I finished it in 1 sitting. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author and in particular, The Graceless (Watch the Wreckage Book 2), when I get it. Jordan Gibbs’ narration adds to the enjoyment of the read. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Steve just wants to do his job and be left alone. But in the future, will there ever be true privacy? The Company wants n exclusive contract. Steve doesn't mind working for the Company, but wants to be able to choose his own customers. With his assistant Annabelle, he makes enough to live comfortably. When one of his jobs goes horribly wrong, his future and his freedom may be lost. A.R. Shaw writes amazing stories with thought provoking story lines.
A story about a person living on a dying earth whose only purpose is to do the bidding of the Company, the government, and select clients using on?y his proprietary drones. Sounds silly but it actual has promise for a interesting series. I am waiting for the next book.
Good basic premise, but very uneven execution. It seemed that as I got into the flow, the usage-spelling-extraneous-wrong words popped up and blew the thought train. This author needs a good proofreader to clean up the distractions.
Finally, there was the abrupt and unresolved ending. Did the main character die, did he give up the secret, why?
Not my favorite. Not the worst. I had high hopes. I love dystopian stories. This one was kind of flat and uninteresting. It also felt very like “oh and another thing,” if that makes sense. It was a quick listen so it only took me a few drives to get through it. I won’t continue the series though. At least it was free.
Lots of gadgetry, minimalism, scorched earth, literally. For me the story starts out slow but definitely gains momentum and finishes strong. Very futuristic. Now I have to wait, I hope not long, for the next book in the series.
Fascinating read that kept me engaged. A cliffhanger ending, very abrupt, that left me disappointed. I suppose I'll buy the next in the series to see where it goes, maybe... Also several typos and incorrect words that left me shaking my head...
Character development was pretty good. Found a lot of grammatical errors while reading. Nothing that spoiled the book, but I was sure to send the publisher a comment. Thankfully those things are easy to fix!
