From the moment I saw him, I knew he was trouble... but I kissed him anyway, and now I'm here. My fault.
Oh, where's here? It's definitely not the Blind Raccoon, one of Seattle's grungiest, dirtiest, most prestigious dive bars. No, that beautiful stranger at the bar is the reason I'm plucked out of the human world, where most things make sense, and brought to a place called Arcadia - the world of the Fae.
A world of monsters.
He brings me to a mansion called Emerald Hall, and while it's breathtakingly pretty, I'm a prisoner here, stuffed into a cell and warned not to be seen by the other Fae. I have to try to get out of here, using every trick I learned growing up, but I can't help wanting to know more about the man who stole me from my home and brought me all the way to his.
You know, after he tried to kill me.
There's something about him, about this place, and about me. Secrets just waiting to be unraveled, if only I cared to pull the threads. But who has time for that when there's escaping to do?

You ever start reading and immediately smile and then start giggling like crazy? The more you read the more you cant stop and the giggles turn to full blown laughing bursts. This is that book!!
This is the most down to earth book ever!! The tone is real, light, funny and care free. But dont let that fool you, is still very magical and deadly! It's a smash where contemporary meets urban fantasy - at least at the beginning because of the characters! You can see yourself in some of the situations and cant help falling for the MC. From the moment Avery starts talking i fall madly in love with her! Her character is EVERYTHING!! The way she talks and describe things will have you rolling on the floor!! Get ready, Arcadia is not ready for Avery!
I have always enjoyed this author’s books, so I was excited to see another series in a universe I’d been introduced to and loved. I noticed immediately that this one was slightly different. Avery is more jaded and cynical about the world than most of the author’s MCs, and she was very intriguing. The Fae world we are introduced to is also less happy, and everyone is more out for themselves and full of deceit and lies. There isn’t much romance as of yet, but I do see it coming. I loved this set-up book for this engaging world, and I am looking forward to what happens next! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I loved the previous series set in Arcadia so was super excited to read this new series and although I did struggle with Avery our female mc to start with by the end I absolutely loved her story. The storyline is exciting and so entertaining and the characters are extraordinary from Elaith the au pair to Rell the Drake and then the hot and sexy Viscount known as haircut guy! There’s twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, there’s sass and snark to have you laughing out loud and there’s secrets and mystery to be solved! The author draws you in with her writing so much so that you feel like you are right there alongside Avery on her adventure into the land of the fae and I look forward to the next book!
2 stars Dnf at 87%. No suspense or drama. I felt no connection with any of the characters or the world. Everything felt very shallow and it always went perfectly right. I can’t imagine it will get better.
🌱🍃Welcome back to Arcadia, in a whole new court 😉....
For fans of our fearless authors THE COLDEST FAE series...this new series takes place within the same kingdom of Arcadia but within the Spring Court. Anyone thinking they might be any kinder than their previous Winter cousins can think again. Once more we find what we believe to be a human (though I have my doubts) land herself in this new land in the most unusual of ways (no spoilers😉). My goodness do I love this character LOL. she is filled to the brim with spirit, wit, fiery passion, determination, and flat out refuses to give up. I am truly looking forward to what's up next for her in this series. There are twists and turns, A few surprises....but mostly book one lays the groundwork for the story. The characters are well crafted....I cheered and laughed out loud many times in relation to our main gal. All in all a really fun read! I cannot wait for book two to come out!!!
What is with this author and heroines being kidnapped by bad guys that they find hard to resist? Seriously?!?!? A woman attracted to someone holding her against her will is unhealthy, and the guy turning out to be good is a highly unlikely fantasy, the kind that should not be encouraged. Bad guys are bad guys, period. I want to enjoy this author’s books because they are creative and I enjoy fantasy romance, but I don’t know if I can because this approach bothers me.
Although entertaining, I thought it lacked a bit of depth. The story was solely centered around Avery wanting to go home, her plans for escape, looong descriptions of her escape attempts and tactics, with no weight to them as you don’t really wish her to succeed and already know she won’t succeed (there would be no book, after all). There is nothing at stake, and you know nothing will happen when she fails, at most she’ll get scolded by “tall dark and handsome”. The Viscount.
End of book 1, and we know nothing about him, his personality, his story. In fact, he just makes random appearances at just the right cliché moment, looking “handsome”. I didn’t feel any romance, and I fully expect this will be one of those series where the male interest appears and disappears for long stretches of time, a couple of random slow burn moments take place between the MCs with no true dialogue between them, and then suddenly they realise they are in love.
Not to mention that I saw that book 2 will involve “trials”, which is one of my most disliked tropes. Using Avery’s escape attempts as reference for how those may go, I will refrain from reading the next installment.

This was a good start to a trilogy, it's not an overly long book so u whip through it pretty quickly...
Avery doesn't really have a lot going for her, her bands songs are mediocre at best and the best park is it pays for her drinks afterwards. When she steps out back of the bar trying to find her roommate she finds a little more than she bargained for and wonders if maybe her drink was spiked? Because in front of her is a lizard looking creature that can talk. Rell said lizard convinces Avery to help him escape someone after him, at this point she's just playing along with what ever alcohol induced fantasy is playing out. But when the man she tried to pick pocket at the bar turns up in her loungeroom telling her roommate she has to come with him she attempts to help her but instead she's sucked into a world called Arcadia where everyone refers to her as 'human' because they are not. Avery's only goal is to escape but when she attempts to run it nearly costs her her life. Believing her roommate Kady is her only chance at escape she trusts her to help her but when Kady steals her identity and escapes back to the human world Avery is left in Arcadia unable to physically tell anyone who she really is thanks to Kady's spell.
I had a bit of a rough start with this book. Avery is so unlike me, so unlike anyone I know, I had a difficult time grasping on to her motives. She’s independent to a fault, abrasive, and so completely anti-establishment that reading her felt to me how I imagine a cat feels with their fur stroked the wrong way. On the other hand, I immediately connected with Rell. The sass and snark in this drake-kin are perfectly epic. In my mind I’m largely picturing Mushu from Disney’s Mulan, and even heard most of his lines spoken in Eddie Murphy’s voice. Theirs is an uneasy alliance. But I kept reading, and I found the cracks in Avery’s ‘tough girl’ armor that I could connect with. By the end, I was fully invested in her situation and I’m already eagerly looking forward to finding out what happens next. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
I really liked the previous series set in Arcadia so was excited to read this new series. Although I did have some problems with Avery, our female mc, to start with by the end of the book I really liked the story. The storyline is exciting and very entertaining and the characters are extraordinary, from Elaith the au pair to Rell the Drake and then there is the mysterious and sexy Viscount! There’s twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, there’s sass and snark to have you laughing out loud and there’s secrets and mystery to be solved! The author draws you in with her writing so much so that you feel like you are right there, alongside Avery, on her adventure into the land of the fae. I look forward to the next book
Avery is having an interesting night when she finds out there is more to humans. She will have her life upended. Avery will have to rely on her wits and her survival skills to help her get through what she was brought into.
I absolutely love the character of Avery. She is will keep you entertained and rooting for her during the entire book. You will be introduced to some interesting characters. The twist and turns of that the author took had me floored. I couldn't stop reading. I can't wait for book 2. This author never disappoints with her books, I highly recommend reading. This is an is a must read book.
As always, Katerina Martinez lures you into her universe like a goddess! The stories she tells make me feel like I am in the scene, watching it unfold before my eyes. Characters become friend or foe, I can feel the breeze and smell the air. Her unique brand of author magic never fails to awe and entertain. Enter the Katerinaverse and become enchanted, wishing you never had to leave.
This book opens the view into the Spring Fae way of life. They are devious, cunning and liars. Beware who to believe and who to trust. Your life may actually depend on it!
Grunge-loving Avery will win your heart (and your funny bone) in another Five Star book by Katerina Martinez. A human stuck in the Spring Fae realm of Arcadia, Avery is thrown into a world she never dreamed existed. A place where mermaids and half sprite/half drake's (on his father's side) exist. Under the protection of the Viscount, she's stuck with no way out. Acadia will devour her whole if she tries. I'm so loving this series. Cannot wait for book two!
This girl, she was amazing! I loved her! She was totally hot! She just kissed the guy and was like I’m going to steal his wallet no wait so distracted, wow can he kiss… what wallet again?? And that was just in the beginning!! She was such a delight, completely true to character and form. No deviations I really just loved her. I loved Rell! I can’t wait to see where this story goes. I want to hate the Viscount so much, but I know he has his own part to play, I’m sure. This was so well done.
Devious fae is a 100% great representation of this book! The fae in the spring court are more calculated than the winter fae were in the coldest fae series. You will find Betrayal, deceit, and action in the book! I like Avery she is a snarky strong willed MC and loyal to a fault. This is a good beginning of a series book and wouldn’t say it ends on a cliffhanger but it def a wtf moment! I also like the POV from the viscount at the end too. I Can’t wait for the next book!
This is a great story with so many unexpected events taking place that I was Blown Away! Avery is a great MC and Rell is a wonderfully interesting. Viscount is full of surprises, Kady"s mom is something else. I got to the end and went nooo! I loved it! This is another great story in the world of Arcadia that I highly recommend!!! I received an ARC from the Author and I am Leaving this TOTALLY HONEST Review because I think that this is a great beginning to a wonderful series!!!
This book is just as kickarse as Coldest Fae! This book has one hell of a sassy FMC and I love her she's pretty amazing! This world of Arcadia keeps getting better or twisted with each new book. This pulled me in and didn't let go untill I was finished. I can't wait to read the next book! If you haven't read Coldest Fae yet go do so because it's just as good as this! I highly recommend this series.
This was awesome! Avery is a bit of a surprise! She seems to be able to adapt and conquer quite well. Kady is actually awful. I also have some thoughts about Avery’s humanity. I did like Rell, I think he and Avery are going to wreak some serious havoc amongst the fae. Should be entertaining. I truly enjoyed reading this and look forward to reading what happens next!
It was so great to be able to go back to Arcadia again! This was a quick, fun read! Thorns was very fast paced ! I like how this is more adult than The Coldest Fae series was. I love the setting in the Spring Court. I’m obviously crushing on the Viscount! I can’t wait to see what happens next with Avery in the next book, Roses!
I read this thru KU. It was a DNF for me. I liked the writing. The h was flawed & interesting. BUT it was super violent & depressing so I dipped out. I actually felt relieved when I skipped to the review. Not saying it's necessarily bad, just not for me (as a romance book).
Dislikes Unsympathetic heroine Casual use of foul language for no purpose except to reveal the foul character of the heroine, which makes it difficult to care what happens to her.
It’s disrespectful to the reader and I have other things to do with my time. I do not recommend this book.
Was excited when i came across this book as a suggestion and fell in love! Funny banter, shocking plot twist and a storyline that is easy to follow. Only feel that the Viscount should maybe have a name to put to the handsome face. Can not wait for the next book!
Ok it was funny and you cheered for the main character but then you just want to smack her in the head for not listening ... I loved this story and now starting on the next book. I wait to see where it goes
I loved the story but the main character made me want to throw this book so many times. She is so naive and trusting even with her background. She also has absolutely no smarts whatsoever. Great plot. Bad MC.
I had such a hard time finishing this book! The story was kind of all over the place and with not a lot of background in Avery I didn't understand her reactions towards situations she found herself in. So I guess the story was just missing depth

Thorns, by author Katerina Martinez, is the first installment in the authors The Devious Fae series. This story is set in the same world as the authors previous series called The Coldest Fae, except, instead of Winter, the author takes us to the Fae court of Spring where readers are introduced to an entirely new cast of characters. Avery Rose is just finishing up a set with her band, when she not only kisses a strange man, but finds something alive in a dumpster. Rell is a part drake, part sprite, and all attitude like Mushu from Mulan.
