At first I liked the story and where it was going and it just got weird. Her relationship with the reverend is where it just went downhill. It was awkward and made me uncomfortable. Then the way she agreed to marry Mr. Donovan was annoying. I would have preferred her waiting on going back to him than her weird stipulation. Why be married if you obviously have no intentions are truly being in the relationship.

‘Winter of the Heart’ by EG Parsons is a good old-fashioned romance about bad choices and second chances involving a heroine who is afraid to love again, a widower grieving for what he has lost and a violent husband, set in post-Civil War South Carolina.
In 1876, Megan Connors starts a new life as a schoolteacher on a ranch at Willow Creek. Finding the children eager to learn, she hopes her dreams of a good life are coming true. Except for her boss, the rude ranch owner Charles Donavan, glamorous neighbour Alicia who expects to marry Charles, and a ghostly presence. When romance starts to blossom, Megan must admit she is not free to marry. When her former husband William arrives to claim her, Megan must leave with him and return to their home in Clearwater, Virginia.
The second half of the novel is a tale of survival. Megan plans her escape from William’s house but with winter approaching she gets lost and wanders into the mountains. Encounters with a bear, bandits and snow leave her almost dead. Meanwhile Charles realises his behaviour to Megan was harsh. He leaves his ranch and with the help of confidential investigator James Marshall, investigates Megan’s story. Marshall sends a man into the mountains to search for Megan but, growing impatient, Charles follows. Is Megan dead, or is she sheltering in one of the remote homesteads cut off by snow until spring comes.
I read this quickly on a plane and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Captivating story

This book has a little bit of everything in it, love, romance, a strong female character, gentlemen, and rogues unworthy of the love of a good woman, and best of all a little suspense and drama.

In Winter of the Heart Megan Conner escapes from her brutal husband in Virginia to take a job on a ranch as a school teacher in South Carolina. Charles, bitter widower and the owner of the ranch falls for the beautiful Megan until her husband shows up to claim her.

After a week with no food and locked in a room, Megan is determined to escape again and she heads for the mountains on a horse. Charles has hired a Pinkerton man to find her and his search begins.

She faces hardships on her trip into the mountains when she looses her horse, has her coat with her money stolen, is chased by a bear, falls in a river when she can't swim and is finally rescued just as winter is starting.

Will Charles find her and the happy ever after he wants or will she find a new life in the mountains? Winter of the Heart is historical fiction with great characters and an interesting storyline with lots of twists and turns.

Yay.
I finished the book.
It took me forever and a couple days because I had to finish it. I only rarely put something as a DNF and I couldn't find it in my heart to do this. Let me tell you I had two problems: The Twist and the Twist one I was like Seriously?!?!??!?!? and the other I was like REALLY?!?!?!??! No spoilers but it was the same twist that had my head spinning. I don't know whether I loved it or hated it but, anyways I finished the book :)

I'm not sure why i read this whole book. I really wanted to like it, but kept hoping for more regency romance less "swollen pants" and nipples. Not for me, but maybe for you? The ghost of Rachel surprised me, i didn't expect that aspect and I enjoyed that twist- which i think kept me reading. and then at some point you just have to finish what you start reading- so i did.

What an adventure

Megan sets an adventure for herself, and finds a new life. Then the past finds her, and she runs again, and Charles gains her back, but how and at what price. This was an interesting excellent book and one that all should have in their libraries.
