Andy Carpenter #20

Dachshund Through the Snow

Rate this book

This Christmas, lawyer Andy Carpenter and his golden retriever, Tara, can't say no to helping six-year-old Adam and his dachshund, Simon.

Christmas is the time for giving. Lawyer Andy Carpenter and his wife, Laurie, generously give back year-round, but they always try to do a little something extra around the holidays. Andy’s local pet store has a Christmas tree, where instead of ornaments there are wishes from those in need. This leads Andy to six-year-old Adam, whose selfless plea strikes a chord with Andy and Laurie. Adam asked Santa for a coat for his mother, food for his dachshund, Simon, and for the safe return of his missing father.

It turns out Adam’s father doesn't want to be found . . . he's on the run from a murder charge – a murder that Adam’s mother swears he didn’t commit.

With his trademark humor and larger-than-life characters, Rosenfelt never fails to deliver as Andy and his eccentric crew dash to reunite a family in time for Christmas.

I am a novelist with 27 dogs.

I have gotten to this dubious position with absolutely no planning, and at no stage in my life could I have predicted it. But here I am.

My childhood was relentlessly normal. The middle of three brothers, loving parents, a middle-class home in Paterson, New Jersey. We played sports, studied sporadically. laughed around the dinner table, and generally had a good time. By comparison, "Ozzie and Harriet's" clan seemed bizarre.

I graduated NYU, then decided to go into the movie business. I was stunningly brilliant at a job interview with my uncle, who was President of United Artists, and was immediately hired. It set me off on a climb up the executive ladder, culminating in my becoming President of Marketing for Tri-Star Pictures. The movie landscape is filled with the movies I buried; for every "Rambo", "The Natural" and "Rocky", there are countless disasters.

I did manage to find the time to marry and have two children, both of whom are doing very well, and fortunately neither have inherited my eccentricities.

A number of years ago, I left the movie marketing business, to the sustained applause of hundreds of disgruntled producers and directors. I decided to try my hand at writing. I wrote and sold a bunch of feature films, none of which ever came close to being actually filmed, and then a bunch of TV movies, some of which actually made it to the small screen. It's safe to say that their impact on the American cultural scene has been minimal.

About fourteen years ago, my wife and I started the Tara Foundation, named in honor of the greatest Golden Retriever the world has ever known. We rescued almost 4,000 dogs, many of them Goldens, and found them loving homes. Our own home quickly became a sanctuary for those dogs that we rescued that were too old or sickly to be wanted by others. They surround me as I write this. It's total lunacy, but it works, and they are a happy, safe group.

This was my second Andy Carpenter series book.... and I’ve got to say I’m growing quite fond of this character!
Andy is a defense attorney who would like nothing more than to retire! But alas, poor Andy keeps getting pulled into helping people out of the “pickles” they presently find themselves in.

This time it’s Andy’s wife Laurie who asks him to assist in a murder case, one that is fourteen years old. They need to help a man who steadfastly proclaims his innocence! Even though his DNA was found under the victim's nails. Oooops! Good luck Andy! You’re going to need it!

I love a character with attitude! And boy does Andy have that in spades! He is one of the funniest, and snarkiest (is that even a word?)🤔 characters’ I’ve come across. Early on I thought he was over the top. But as the story played out I grew to love him (who would have thought?)🤷🏻♀️

This book is number 20 in the series but will also easily read as a stand-alone. Highly recommend if you’re searching for a fun laugh out loud light read!

As for Andy's dogs...🐶
I was a tad disappointed in the previous release as the dogs only had a minor supporting role. Mr. Rosenfelt must have heard me🤭 because they were front and center in this release!

A super-fun buddy read with Susanne!

This is a Christmas Mystery, and It is the 20th book in the Andy Carpenter series. I really enjoyed this book. In this book Andy (A lawyer) had two cases. One about a police dog and one proving someone did not do the murder that happen 14 years before. The ending I did not see coming. The characters in this series I really love, and I love the new characters that was in this book. Great read.

Every Dog has its Day - in Court that is!

When Simon, a K-9 companion needs representation, it’s Andy Carpenter to the rescue! When Simon’s handler decides to retire, he asks Andy to file a suit allowing Simon to retire early due to disability, instead of having Simon transferred to another handler for a year. Simon, you see has arthritis and bad hips - and if he were human, he would be granted early retirement but given the fact that he is a dog, he is not granted such accommodation. Seeing as Andy has a love for dogs, he jumps at the chance.

Meanwhile, Andy’s wife Laurie gets them involved in a one heck of a case. The representation of a man accused of murdering a woman who went missing years ago. The case leads them down paths the team never could have imagined. Here, Andy’s courtroom style is brilliant and just plain fun to watch.

What makes the Andy Carpenter series so great (besides Andy’s sarcastic dry humor - which I love!) is that solving the crimes is always a team effort and the way the crimes are solved is complete genius and takes McGyver-esque moments that just made me smile. This is only my second novel by David Rosenfelt and I enjoyed it even more than the last and can’t wait to read more books in this series!

This was another awesome buddy read with Kaceey!

Thank you to Joseph Brosnan at Minotaur Books and David Rosenfelt for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Well, this started off as a case of deja vu. I recently listened to Deck The Hounds and the beginning of this book was so similar, I started thinking I had somehow already read it. No, Mr. Rosenfelt is just recycling his opening lines. But I’ll forgive him. Because when I need something light and refreshing, Andy Carpenter is my go to.

Rosenfelt has tapped into the current use of DNA websites by the police to find links to UnSubs. In this case, Andy’s client is accused of a fourteen year old unsolved murder when his brother’s DNA comes up as a relative to the DNA found under the fingernails of the victim. There’s also a subplot about a police dog seeking early retirement.

These are books you love for the characters. And I love that Laurie is able to twirl Andy around her little finger and he knows it.

While these aren’t serious books, they’re always well constructed and designed to keep you guessing. And almost every page has a bit of Rosenfelt humor. Very few authors are equally successful in combining humor with a good mystery.

Kudos to Mr. Rosenfelt for keeping me engaged through 20 books.

My thanks to netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance copy of this book.

Dachshund Through the Snow reminded me why I completed 22 books since discovering 'Open and Shut' (Andy Carpenter, #1) in 2016. Mr. Rosenfelt's books are timeless, and I hope he continues writing his witty and very endearing Andy Carpenter series well into the future. I am always educated on something new concerning court procedures and the law. In addition, I will never tire of Andy Carpenter's delightfully dry - often self-deprecating- sense of humor.
Narrator Grover Gardner is (like no other) extraordinary as the voice of Andy Carpenter. - Why I have listened to every episode he has narrated (to date) in this series.
Rosenfelt + Gardner = Winning.

This book which contains legal drama and high stakes criminal investigation is the 20th in the Andy Carpenter series. This is only the 5th I have read, but I intend to read more. Narrated by Andy, I always enjoy his witty, sardonic sense of humour and his sarcastic thoughts and conversations.

Andy Carpenter is a defence lawyer. He prefers to spend time with his dog rescue foundation and with family and his 2 pet dogs Being independently wealthy, he only accepts legal cases if there is somehow a dog involved. The author. David Rosenfelt, the author of the series, also runs a dog rescue service, has over two dozen pet dogs, and has rescued 4,000 animals.

It is hard to resist the adorable dogs pictured on the covers, but be aware these are not relaxing, cozy mysteries, but are intricately plotted crime thrillers. They involve difficult and dangerous investigations by Andy, his wife, and friends and conclude with courtroom drama. The stories I have read feature mob violence, drug trafficking, criminal conspiracies, smuggling, gang-related murders and terrorism, crimes involving technology, and a most wanted international criminal by Interpol, all within complicated plots. A team of Andy's friends help with the investigations and court trials.

Fourteen years previously, a teenaged girl was murdered. She was meeting a teenaged boy secretly as she was involved in another relationship. ( That boy is now a man and is the father of the boy who wants him home for Christmas.) There was an argument where she clawed at his face and he left her sitting there. DNA was found under the girl's fingernails and at the murder site but it could not be matched with anyone at the time. Now years later it has been traced to him, and he is in hiding to avoid arrest for murder. He insists the girl was alive when he left the scene, and always feared he would be blamed for the murder.

Andy urged by his wife reluctantly agrees to defend him, but to do so he must come up with an alternate suspect to raise doubts in the minds of a jury. He has put himself in danger. After being attacked by two small-time criminals, they are found shot dead the next day. Another shady character dies after informing Andy of a most- wanted international criminal who may be involved. As bodies start piling up, Andy feels a conspiracy is somehow involved in the girl's death. Will the jury believe in such a complicated plot? It is Andy's task to tie together a complex thread of killings in order to defend his innocent client. This task seems impossible since he has no idea of the motive, why the girl was their victim, and what others may have participated in her murder. He must convince a jury that a gang of criminals with seemingly with no connection to the girl caused her death. Did she have a dangerous secret which led to her death, and was she was killed to silence her? Can he place his client's guilt in doubt and restore him to his family?

He is also involved in another trial. A policeman is retiring, but the Department insists his arthritic police dog must work another year regardless of the dog's physical condition. Andy sues the Police Department for species discrimination.

I wish to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this delightful book in the Andy Carpenter series in return for an honest review. They are told with great humour and contain serious criminal cases and courtroom drama.
I look forward to more books in this enjoyable series. Highly recommended!. 4.5 stars

Possibly the best of Andy Carpenter! I can't be certain because I still have a handful in the series I haven't read. But if you haven't read any of them you can jump right into this holiday one.

Once again Andy failed at retirement when his wife Laurie asked him to take on two cases without pay it's the right thing to do as Christmas is approaching. Like any Christmas loving folks, Laurie's Christmas started right after Halloween and wanted to make wishes come true for a young boy looking for his dad and a retiring K-9 police officer.

There's a surprising twist as story comes to an end. Entertained!

Well plotted mystery with enough twists to make it a page turner? Well-developed, relatable characters? Satisfying conclusion? The right touch of humor? Dogs?
It’s like a flow chart, and when I go through all of the steps, I know I’m reading a book by one of my favorite authors, David Rosenfelt. In this newest novel, Andy has 2 clients, one biped, and one quadruped. Andy takes on Simon the German Shepherd as a client when the police department engages in what Andy calls “species discrimination.” The second case starts when Laurie is trying to fulfill a child’s Christmas wish, and one of .the items on his list is to get his dad back. The dad is in danger of being convicted of murder, and what he needs is a good defense attorney, which is where Andy Carpenter comes in. Entertaining and enjoyable reading, not just for dog lovers.

Andy Carpenter's wife Laurie loves Christmas. She starts the holiday early and finishes it way after the season is over. She has decided on a new holiday tradition. Local children leave wishes on a tree at the local pet shop. Laurie plans to fulfill as many of those wishes as she can. One wish particularly gets her attention. Danny asks for a gift for his mom, a sweater for his pet dachshund.....and that santa find his missing dad. Turns out his dad is on the run from a murder charge that he didn't commit. Can Andy Carpenter and his family/friends solve the case and bring this family back together for the holiday?

I enjoyed this book....but I jumped into this series on book #20....so it took me awhile to understand the characters and their personalities, relationships, past history. I think I would have enjoyed the story more or gotten sucked into the action faster had I already been familiar with the series. As it is, I liked the characters and the nice dose of humor, plus action and great investigation. Very enjoyable story!

I think my favorite character has to be Andy's wife. She is intelligent, sassy and a bit extra. Bigger than life. She put a lot of fun into the plot. I love the front cover art. The cute dachshund on the front is what first made me want to read this book! :)

**I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**

First Sentence: It has been almost fourteen years since Kristen McNeil's body was discovered.

A tag on a Christmas charity wish tree leads attorney Andy Carpenter and his wife Laurie to a young boy wanting his father Noah Traynor to be brought home. The murder, for which Noah has been arrested, was a cold case until his DNA is identified on the victim's body. In the meantime, K-9 officer Sergeant Corey Douglas is about to retire, but his dog, Simon, still has time left to work. Corey wants Andy to help him get Simon released to retire with him. Andy agrees to represent Simon on the basis of species discrimination.

How refreshing when characters defy stereotype. Laurie, Andy's wife, is the type of person one aspires to be; kind, generous, compassionate toward people. She is an ex-cop, and very capable of taking care of herself and Andy. Andy, on the other hand, is a lawyer who keeps trying to retire from the law and is passionate about dogs. As a self-described weakling, he depends upon Laurie and the indomitable Marcus to protect him. There are interludes of Andy at home with his family and friends, yet they avoid the over-sentimentality such interaction can bring about.

Rosenfelt's courtroom scenes are a pleasure to read. They are well presented and honest, even when the client is decidedly unusual. He creates an excellent analogy likening a court case to a mountain climb such as Mt. Everest, and through it introduces the rest of Andy's quirky and memorable team.

It is always tragic when someone young dies. It is appreciated when Rosenfelt acknowledges one of the great sorrows of such a death--'It also once again highlights the terrible loss that occurred when her best friend died; Kristen might have gone on to bring other people into the world or cure some disease or just do kind things for people that needed kindness."

The story includes alternative POVs but only when needed to move the plot forward by characters other than the protagonist. Rosenfelt creates a plot which seems simple but grows into something more complicated and more dangerous as it progresses. Be aware; despite the cute dog on the cover, this is not a cozy. Rosenfelt does like his body count, but the scenes aren't particularly gory. He is also very good at the unexpected, and very effective, plot twist, and a fun mention which lightens the situation.

The dialogue is so well written, the courtroom exchanges come alive. Along with the on-going outside investigation, in which there is a very nice escalation of suspense, plot twist, and an excellent red herring, one feels the anticipation of awaiting the jury's decision.

"Dachshund Through the Snow" is a well-done legal mystery with plenty of twists and suspense. A very nice aftermath hints at the future of the series.

This was a fun cozyish mystery that my wife selected for us to hear on a recent long drive. It's about a wealthy young investigative lawyer who professes a desire to retire, but his wife keeps finding him cases to take on. First, he represents a German shepherd police dog who wants to take early retirement along with his partner, and then he represents a man who's the main suspect in a fourteen-year-old murder case. It's quite clever and amusing in spots. The titular dachshund doesn't have much influence on the story and there were a few things that I thought were unconvincing (such as the idea that a letter from the deceased would remain undiscovered after so much time, and a mistake in the NFL scheduling practices, and the technological McGuffin wasn't believable, etc.), but it was a fun and well-performed listen.

Note to Laurie: You will never get me to start celebrating Christmas the day after Halloween, ha!

I love that this series has so much heart. I laughed when I read where Laurie and Andy were searching a bad guy's hotel room:
Andy says "We go through the entire room, which is not difficult or time-consuming because he traveled very lightly. Just some clothes, and not much else, certainly not anything interesting. He also has two books on the night table, including a thriller by David Rosenfelt, who I hear is terrific. I’m tempted to grab it, but I don’t." Funny!!

I most enjoy reading about Andy when he's in the courtroom and this book was no exception. I recommend it!

After reading several dark novels, I decided it was time for another warmhearted Andy Carpenter story, this time book #20 in the series, ”Dachshund Through The Snow”. Andy Carpenter novels always cheer me up, and they don’t need to be read in sequence. Some are slightly more enjoyable than others, depending on the complexity of the plot line.

Dachshund Through The Snow” has a reasonable number of twists and turns and thus is one of the better entries in the series. Andy finds himself defending a man who was arrested for a cold case murder based on a familial DNA match to evidence found at the murder scene. The only physical evidence obtained from the crime scene is the DNA that can be used to convict Andy’s client. Consequently, Andy and his team are forced to follow a convoluted trail that includes international spies and domestic gangsters, none of whom appear to have crossed paths with the murder victim.

Corey Douglas and his terrific K-9 German Shepherd, Simon Garfunkel, are also initiated into Andy’s team in this book, and Simon plays a small but important role.

But it is Andy’s sarcastic dry humour that makes this series worth reading.

4.25 stars for “Dachshund Through The Snow”.

What a great holiday mystery! This is the first Andy Carpenter mystery I've read but I'll be catching up on the series! I'm this book, Andy (a lawyer) and his wife, Laurie (a former police Lieutenant and now an investigator for Andy) have a decade old crime to solve. Their success could bring a family back together or shatter it forever. With many twists and turns - one concerning a retiring police officer and his older canine partner - the book keeps you on your reading "toes"!

I enjoyed the witty dialogue and the relationship between Andy and Laurie. Also, the supporting characters were as well written as the main character's and all added a layer of mystery, humor and humanity to the book. The book is the perfect holiday read. While it's not a cozy mystery, it has a "cozy" feel. I'd put this on my holiday TBR!

I received an ARC from NetGalley for a fair and honest review of this book.

“Dachshund Through the Snow” by David Rosenfelt is the latest Andy Carpenter adventure, and an adventure it is. New readers will be immediately pulled into the story through the compelling opening. Regular readers will find the whole familiar gang Andy Carpenter, wife Laurie, son Ricky, and of course dogs Tara and Sebastian, all anticipating the upcoming holiday/football season.
Rosenfelt’s characters are affable, relaxed, likeable, and yet focused and diligent when necessary. The first person narrative by Carpenter is a little self-deprecating, a little sarcastic, very humorous, and always focused on his dogs, other peoples’ dogs, and, actually, just the wellbeing of dogs in general.

This is an absorbing detective story with a challenging client, and complicated adversaries, however, when the chips are down, Carpenter rises to the occasion with excellent intuition, focused investigative skills, and brilliant (in his opinion) legal tactics to save the day for all.

The entire Andy Carpenter series is just entertaining to read, and “Dachshund Through the Snow” is no exception. Rosenfelt includes plenty of Carpenter’s trademark humor and dedication to justice with a dash of violence but without buckets of blood and gore. There is also a fun product placement for Rosenfelt’s other books; “He also has two books on the night table, including a thriller by David Rosenfelt, who I hear is terrific.”

I received a review copy of “Dachshund Through the Snow” from David Rosenfelt and St Martin’s Press. It is compelling, suspenseful, and makes me wish that Tara and Sebastian could just save everyone.

Dachshund Through the Snow (Andy Carpenter #20) by David Rosenfelt.

Happiness began with the news of a new andy Carpenter being released. A smile started when I received this new release in my hands. And then I began the latest Andy Carpenter book (on CD).

Andy & Laurie have a Christmas tradition recently started of wishes from the needy on their tree rather than the usual decorations. One request was from Danny requesting a coat for Mom, a sweater for his dachshund and for his Dad to return since he had gone missing.
This request from Danny leads Andy (and Laurie) back to an old (cold) murder case of a young woman who had been found murdered 14 years ago. Danny's Dad had been arrested for that murder and has taken off since then. So finding the Dad was andy's first step in this scenario. The second step will be to find his newest client not guilty of that cold case murder.

I so enjoy spending time with Andy, Laurie (yes & even Marcus)and of course Tara and Sebastian. This story, however, had an ending that left me questioning the results. Highly recommended.

An enjoyable holiday read as well as my very first Andy Carpenter Mystery. I may just have to go back and read others from the series. With this being #20 I've got some catching up to do, ha ha!

I found Dachshund Through The Snow to be well written with a solid storyline, likeable characters and a satisfying conclusion. It definitely kept me guessing throughout. Plus let's be honest, the dogs in the book are such a fun addition to the storyline!

I'm sure I missed some background by starting with book 20 but I still enjoyed it.

This book was pretty much just what I wanted to read, and what I expected from this series. An interesting story with lots of Andy Carpenter's special brand of humor. Now I'm ready for a few more serious books.

One interesting little joke was when Andy was searching through someone's stuff and saw a book by David Rosenfelt, which he was tempted to take. Guess he's familiar with the author.

Also in this book, we get an introduction to The K Team, which is made up of his investigators who decided that since Andy has been trying so hard to retire, they'd better think about their future, since they'd all be out of a job. So, good to know that after finishing this series, there will be some more coming.
