I will make them pay. The demons who sealed my fate and betrayed me. I may be just a witch, but I will revel in their ashes.
Waking up in the underworld left me reeling, tricked, enraged… I confronted a prince of hell and believed I had won. It was all a lie—all because I refused to lift a blood curse. The demons who betrayed me will bleed for their treachery.
Forming an uneasy truce and unlikely alliance with a teacher who is willing to help, I will do whatever I need to get out of this infernal pit. To seek revenge on those who ruined me. For hell hath no fury like a witch scorned…

Eve L. Mitchell is a USA Today Bestselling author who writes contemporary romance and urban fantasy.
Being an avid reader from a young age, Eve still considers herself to be a reader first. She believes there is nothing better than getting that new book either on your e-reader or in your hands, and the fact she may bring that excitement to a fellow reader, fills her with wonder. She writes under a pen name because otherwise her Secret Agent status will be revoked.
Eve lives in the North East of Scotland, with her three coffee machines and her significant other, Mr. M. She enjoys NFL Football, music and having long conversations with the voices in her head, which sometimes turn into the stories she writes.
Betrayal, anger, uncertainty, revenge and oh so much more, as we return to the world of the Watchers Series, with A Flame of Stars & Midnight by Eve L. Mitchell.
I reread the first book, A Glow of Stars & Dusk before beginning the second book and I still don’t think that it fully prepared me for the powerful storytelling that was to come in the second book.
We are immediately thrown back into the world of the Watchers and Star. The raw emotion and world building will have you so thoroughly consumed that it was like we never left…and you won’t want to.
The storytelling is out of this world and when I think of epic fantasy novels this writing is exactly what I think of. Eve L. Mitchell’s ability to craft this tale is mind-blowing and a little mesmerising.
The words will lift off the page as it wraps you up in the story and the world around you once more disappears and all you are left with is the ability to visualise what you are reading. Nothing else will exist whilst you read and as you turn the last page you’ll realise that once again you’ve been holding your breath, as the story will have so vividly encapsulated you.
Once again Eve L. Mitchell throws plot twists at us, and oh good golly you won’t see them coming. At some points I was cheering so much with the path the story took and the revelations, and I definitely had a few squealing moments and shouting ones as well. Plus the attention to detail with key elements to the story that you might have briefly forgotten whilst you’ve been consumed with the current events of the story, once more become forefront in your mind.
And the relationship between Star and Sam is like one of those epic love stories that are told throughout time. The ones that capture your heart and soul, as you are immersed in their tale of love and hate and everything in between.
There’s so much more I want to say about this book, but I won’t spoil it. I will say that if you thought the first book was mind-blowing, then you are going to explode with what’s install for Star and the Watchers in A Flame of Stars & Midnight.
I was left gobsmacked with this epic adventure from Eve L. Mitchell, and I’m personally glad that we have time to breath before book three comes out. Because whatever is to come, I’m not ready.
Jesus this second installment is full of deceit, revenge, angst, sorrow, love, sacrifice, twist and turns left right and centre... i could go on!!!
Without giving away anything i really didnt know who was being genuine, who could be trusted- it was intense... so much went down- this book was jam packed- there wasnt a moment where i was bored- it had me gripped all the way through, i lost count on how many shocked gasps i did 😄
Book 1 showed a naive Star who didnt have a clue. Book 2 showed a bad a** Star finally finding herself.
Well played Eve 👏 that ending was perfect- i cant wait for book 3 to see how it all plays out.
This book was everything I hoped for and more! I was not ready for it to end, especially right where it did!! I need to know what the hell is going on!! Oh I’m going to be thinking of this series and characters for a very long time. Fingers crossed book 3 isn’t far behind.
I have never loved an fmc as much as I love Star! She is quirky, mouthy, a little naive, questions every damn thing, but stands up for herself, makes the most out of every unexpected situation, and has more power than she knows what to do with! She makes me laugh out loud so much!! Her banter with the Watchers, and all the inappropriate thoughts that cross her mind, I’m telling you…she is absolutely hilarious!
Demons? Oh yes please! They’re my new favorite kind of book boyfriend. Sam is the most possessive, jealous, bossy, alphahole, did I mention possessive? Oh lord it’s hot as hell!! He’s so slick and underhanded too. He’s always “winking” in on Star, which is funny as hell because she’s always caught off guard!
Together they are f*cking explosive!! Couple goals! The spicy scenes are so detailed and make you want a demon for yourself. Just saying. They do have their moments, but there was also some pretty good twists & turns, secrets, and loads of betrayal. This book seriously has it all! If you haven’t read it, I recommend you do, and quickly! You can thank me later for the recommendation!
Good lord.....THIS BOOK!!!!! Trying to put into words how this book has made me feel is proving to be impossible.....delete, rewrite, delete, rewrite *why is it so hard to explain* delete, rewrite *for crying out loud its a bookreview not world peace* delete, rewrite, delete, rewrite ...yup that was me for the last 24 hours!!!! For the love of everything holy or unholy READ THIS BOOK!!!!!! If you like twists and turns, mystery, intrigue, confusion, romance, emotional highs and lows, humour, anger, heartbreak, wtf moments, bouncing your kindle/book off the wall (yup this happened....can I claim damages?!?) and just simply outstanding writing THEN READ THIS BOOK!!!! You do need to first read book 1 (A Glow of Stars and Dust) as this is not a standalone but be prepared for the ride of your life
And that ending!!!!! What the hell!!! Seriously drop jaw happening here ..no way in hell I even saw THAT coming.....now I'm off to go rock in a corner quietly and somehow recover from the mother of all reads.....send help, chocolate and copious amounts of coffee
This has to be the best paranormal series out there at the moment.... why are you still reading???? Go... go.... run and get this book!!!
I have been eagerly awaiting this second installment in the Watcher series, and boy was it worth the wait. Star is in h3ll and she's got some interesting companions. Plus she's got a huge case fury and the need to stab certain Watchers. Not to mention she keeps being told she has all this power but she just can't seem to grab a hold of it. Oh, and she's pretty sure she's in love with the one she wants to stab the most.
This story is by turns hilarious and suspenseful as we navigate the maze the Star must figure out to get back where she belongs. Along the way she makes and acquires new companions, teachers, friends, and enemies. Serious enemies. What is great is watching the snarky Star grow into her powers and confidence. Plus Star and Sam are everything.
Once again, you can't say much more at this point without giving the story away--and yes, once again Eve has left us with one heckuva cliffhanger. With this great story, witty dialogue, and fantastic adventure I am sure the next installment will be more than worth the wait.
(p.s. Please tell us you have plans for the other Watchers, pretty please?)
A Flame of Stars and Midnight is the 2nd book in The Watchers series and was another highly engrossing tale that had me hooked unable to put down. The story continues where book 1 left off and takes us on another unexpected journey with Star the FMC and the Watchers. I loved everything about this story, it gave us emotion, suspense, action, unexpected twists, humor, anger, betrayal, steam and so much more. The world building was spectacular and mind blowing and I loved how easy it was to picture it all and get lost in this story. The love hate relationship with Star and Sam continues in this story and the progression of their relationship will consume you. I will admit I did not care for Star in book 1 but she totally redeemed herself in my eyes in this book and I loved seeing the growth in her character. This novel continues with its cast of unforgettable characters and introduces some new characters who you will fall in love with.....yes Cross and Hound I am talking about you. This story was a phenomenal page turner and another top read for me from this year. It ends in a cliff hanger I did not see coming and I can't wait for book 3. I would highly recommend this novel to lovers of paranormal romance.
Words elude me at this point! This book was just wow! This series is now my official favorite! The last book left you with a cliffhanger and gave me a serious book hangover this book leaves you with a cliffhanger but not as bad as the first. Definitely another book hangover which is why I am going to go read it again. I hate giving away spoilers but I have to tell you that this book literally has everything you could want in a book. Star is my favorite she’s witty and funny and tough. I love Sam and the other watchers and Cross I think Hound may be my second favorite, his interactions with Star are hilarious and you will just have to read and see what I mean. There are so many levels to this story it is impossible to be bored or even attempt to put it down.
Holy sh*t I was cursing when I reached the end. I honestly didn’t want it to end. The evolving of the FMC into such a bada$$ heroine. Chefs kiss. Well played, Eve. There were so many twists, turns, not foreseeable changes … it really kept me on my toes. Devoured this book in 2 days. Can’t wait to get my hands on book 3. Again, well done Eve, well done.
I absolutely loved the second book in this trilogy. Star is a firecracker as she deals with the betrayal and heartbreak caused by her sexy demon. This book is full of the best twists and turns and I loved reading every bit of it. You won't be disappointed by these witches, demons, and hell hounds.
Of all that is holy and also not.....this book!!! This series!!! I cannot recommend that you read this highly enough....this is absolutely one of my top series of 2021....so freaking good....I'll be the one sitting in the corner sulking until the next book comes out!!!!
I have been a fan of Eve L. Mitchell since the beginning... I've read ever book she's ever published, and loved all of the characters that she's created (Aaron, you are and always will be the love of my life!). But every now and then an author creates a series that just hits you in the right spot, ticks all your literary boxes, and leaves you wanting more.
Welcome to The Watcher Series.
Everyone who knows me, knows that I am, first and foremost, a fan of fantasy and sci-fi. I love any stories that can take me out of my everyday life and transport me somewhere new and exciting. Better yet, I love a series that takes place in my world, but plays with the thought of "but what if THIS were possible...?"
That is The Watcher Series.
I'm not into writing spoilers for my reviews, but what I can tell you is the following:
Star is my girl--this woman has been to Hell and back (haha, get it?). Her entire world has been thrown for a loop, she's been betrayed, murdered, and played like a pawn, and yet she still maintains her sense of self, her sense of humor, and her undeniable snark. I would have a beer with this woman any day of the week.
Sam... wow... just wow. I was so ready to hate him at the start of this book, but as is Eve's way, she throws in a twist that makes me curse out loud and renew my love for him.
Cross... oh Cross... I love you more than anything.
Hound... I want a book devoted to you.
I am not exaggerating when I say that I read this book in a day. I literally could not put it down. I had no idea where it was going, but I am so happy I got to see the journey and go along for the ride.
The ending? Holy heck I had NO IDEA... did NOT see that coming.
And now I just need Book #3 to come out.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Read the series and lose yourself in this world--you will not regret it.
This was sooo cool. I mean WOW. So intense, in every possible way. There is love, sacrifice, revenge and so much more.. and do not start me on all the twists and turns, completely unexpected. Mysteries, confusion, romance (well.. kind of), heartbreak… there is just so huge fan of emotions and situations. The words did wrap me totally in the story, I was not able to put it down, so engrossed in this unique world.
Relation between Sam and Star is explosive, the constant push and pull, so much chemistry, and so many contractual feelings. Love and hate, steam and betrayal, sacrifice and forgiveness.
Cross made me have conflictual feelings, I like him however he is quite a “player”, and to be honest I still have some mixed feelings about him and some doubts left. I loved Hound, honestly his exchanges with Star was just enlightening of this book. All the Watchers was crazily intense and Star have unique relation with each of them; friendship, hate, resentments. Not an easy lot, all of them.
And Star, our wonderful Star. Witty, badass and as well compassionate, loving and hard working. She grown a lot in her powers, understood many things and take grasp of her life (well.. . kind of). She took risks, she gave up so many more snd she stand for herself. Yet she is still a bit naive and giving her trust easily. It might be my favorite heroine ever.
Don’t make me start on the cliffhanger, it will kill me to wait for continuation. All in all it’s wonderful, unique and highly emotional story that I could only love. Each word, each twist and each emotion did kept my heart on hold. I finished it 3 days ago and to be honest it was still difficult to find words to describe all I felt and thought about this book. What are you waiting for, go grab it already.
I am really loving this series. Star came into her own with this tale. It took her a while but she gained control of her power. Not sure if she fully accepts who she is yet but she is getting there. Cross was a great character. Kind of like Yoda in that he often doesn't answer directly Star's questions. He has his own agenda but he needs Star and wants her with him. The others seem to only really need her for their own means. Yes they care but to what extent do they care about her? I know, Cross sounds a bit the same and yet, I still prefer Cross over the others. I'm still angry at Sam and what he and his brothers did to Star. Not sure if I would have given in to Sam physically like Star did after his actions in the previous story. Even with the connection that Star has with Sam, I really want her to be with Cross. Might seem crazy but I like them together. Hound is a great ally and really cares for Star. Just when I thought things might settle down, especially after all that Star sacrificed, I was not expecting that bombshell at the end. I'm not sure what Sam plans to do. He is a difficult one to figure out. It will be interesting to see how the next book plays out. But I'm looking forward to it. I'm hoping the wait won't be long.
Star, Sam, and the brothers are back and in the pits of hell they are trying to save one of their own, but with betrayal and mistrust between them will they be able to destroy Amadeus and the others. With the help of Cross(Death) Star is learning to control her powers and being in soul form helps as well. When the time comes and they are set for battle who will stand victorious and who will lose the most? This book pulled me right back and had me floored with every page I found out something new and boy did it blow my mind. The emotional twist will have tears in your eyes, laugh some and by the end you will lose your mind when the truth comes out you won't believe it. Absolutely amazing read and waiting for the next to see what happens next.
If you love PNR but your looking for something just a little different book two confirms this series is definitely for you. Fast paced action, with plenty action and laughs. Star is a great female lead character and her character growth throughout book two just increases that sentiment. The pack of demons Sam included at times I feel sort of disconnected with them like maybe I could have done with a few less. But that's just me and who am I to turn away fun!? A couple to many demons wouldn't stop me from reading this series in the slightest and I'm sure I'll be rereading books 1 & 2 while we wait for book 3. I have voluntarily left this review.
Who knew that demons, the underworld, and death himself could be so enticing! Mitchell rocked my world with this second book in the Watcher series and I am expecting book 3 to do the same.
Star continues to be one of my top 5 female characters an author has written. While others continue to try to move her around as a pawn on a chessboard Star 🌟 moves to to be the Queen! Michell is becoming really good at the sleight of hand trick where I think I figured the story out only to be blinded by a move that throws everything I thought I knew out.
Don't get me started on all the Alpha male demons we have in the book with Sam still trying to take center stage in Star's mind and heart. She really comes into her own in this book and is not afraid to call any of these demons out.
I have been hooked on this amazing series from the moment I started reading the first book ( a glow of stars and dusk ) I’m not sure I even have the right words to express what a truly amazing and intriguing story this is . Eve L Mitchell is not only one of my very favorite Authors, but she has a gift of knowing just how to grab onto all your emotions, suck you into the story completely and take you on the ride of your life . I refuse to give any details about this spectacular story away as it’s one that needs to be read ASAP . I cannot wait to read the next installment. Eve blows me away every single time . A flawlessly written storyline and characters that you can’t help but fall in love with . This book has it all . Everything that you could ever want or need in a romance
Eve, Eve, Eve... You always leave me wanting more with your stories and have me want to save them in case of emergencies because they are my guaranteed happy time, my guaranteed reading slump cure. Your words are magic and this book was no exception. I mean, you had me starting to like Zel and I honestly thought that was impossible. Seriously though, your stories just have such an excellent flow to them and with such honest and believable relationship progression and just relationships in general. Keep working that magic and bring us book 3.
2.75 ⭐️ I have no fucking clue what happened in the last 5 chapters. I literally read it twice and parts of it still don’t make sense or are super random or just plain stupid. Like bitch endured centuries of torture because some dude slighted her?? I know I’m missing something, but it better be explained fast in book 3 or im gonna DNF.
Holy moly 😳 this book was epic! Eve L Mitchell is just such an AMAZING writer! I loved everything about this book. Star is becoming a kick butt gal! And I love the relationship between her and Sam! There were so many twists and turns ans the angst! The world building is the best I have read. You feel like you are right there. Eve's writing jumps off the page and sucks you right in. It picks up right at the end of book 1...there's just so much to say...but I don't want to give you spoilers....I just can't recommend you this book enough!! It's so wonderfully good!
I loved this book, so I'll tell you why I rounded down instead of up. It's quite simple really. There just wasn't nearly enough of Sam! Oh, how I love that demon. He can manhandle me any day.
So I stalked Netgalley like crazy hoping for this book to also be offered there. And when it wasn't, I had no choice but to buy it. I have zero regrets. This one wasn't nearly as fun and exciting as the first one but it was still really good.
Was Star always this frustrating? I don't remember her being this bad in the first book. But here she was driving me absolutely insane. I was getting so mad with her trying to keep Sam at a distance, and worse, her flirting with the new guy. Now, I liked Cross....but I also hated him. He is suspicious as all get out and, damn it, I hated the flirting between the two! I can't even tell you how thrilled I was when Star finally admitted that she was Sam's as much as he was hers. But did that change anything? NO! Goddammit.
Anyway. It shouldn't come as any surprise that Star is not really dead after Sam stabs her in the heart. What he didn't plan on was for Star's soul to be taken from him and having to search everywhere for her. She ends up with a guy named Cross who says he's protecting and hiding her from everyone that is looking for her. And it's quite a few people at this point. He also wants to help train her to use her powers because she's actually one of the very few who would be considered under his authority. This is Star we're talking about, so the training doesn't really go very well or very quickly. And finally FINALLY Sam finds her. Let's just say he's less than pleased with Cross. Even so, he leaves Star there for her training. But he doesn't stop visiting her and drawing her to him in her sleep.
After the watchers finally find Star, the story moves along a little bit more. Chaz has given himself up in an attempt to save Star and one that she loves. A decision that has him suffering horrifically every second of every day. A scene that Star has front row seats to. And she is determined to save him no matter what it takes. No matter how hard she tries to fight it, Sam and Star have a connection that nothing seems to be able to break. And when they come together it is so freaking hot. I hate being jealous of fictional girls....
Plans are made to save the two brothers that are captive, another prince is met, and Star forces actions onto others that will have devastating consequences. And there is so much betrayal and layers of hidden agendas all throughout. Some more shocking than others. While some things end as hoped, there is no happy ending. Star's final action is a violent and unexpected one that will give her what she wants but at a terribly steep cost.
The final chapter and epilogue were absolutely insane. I was legitimately freaking out with excitement at where things are going to go. So it should be no surprise I have already pre-ordered the next book.
Fantastic read. Love this world that Eve has created. This book starts where the last one ended. Star has been betrayed and broke by someone she had already forgiven once and here she is again. Sam not only has stabbed star but emotionally tears her down every chance. and Star just forgives him and lets him in. Im not sure Sam is worth her forgiveness especially when one of his brothers impersonates him and she gets the blame from not only sam but from his brothers too. to be called a names for something that was not her fault well Star is a stronger woman than I. This book shows Star rising above and becoming powerful in her own right. I really hope that the next book shows that the watchers need to do more than watch but to grovel and learn to worship star because right now she deserves more. Brilliant read cant wait for the next
Mind-blowing!!! 🤯🖤 WTF just happened in this book??? 😳 I was left heartbreaked, shocked and speachless at the f'ing cliffhanger in book 1, needing answers asap... I got them in this second book and then, all went to h3ll, literally!!! 😫😭 This installment is an intense, wild and distressing journey, with twists and turns I didn’t see coming, including that final blow... WTF??? 🤯 What now???, I can't wait till February to know what will happen, I need it now!!! 😭 This is one of the best series I have read this year and it surprises me, as Eve is a new author to me... you have got a new faithful stalk... follower Eve!!! 😍❤
My mind is honestly scrambled with this 2nd book from Eve. It carries straight on from book 1 and my brain can't cope. Lies, deceit and dishonesty everywhere that you never know what's going to happen next. I loved it.....
This is such a great story. Love all the twists and turns. I admit I was disappointed there wasn’t the kind of vengeance I feel should have been distributed, but there was some. I don’t forgive as easily as some do. Can’t wait for book 3!
Dang, the plot twists and cliffhangers in this series are KILLING me. Star was so naive in the first book, but I loved how she was outwitting everyone in this book. I always love a book where I (the reader) don't know the MC's plan until all of the characters are finding out after she wins, and that is exactly what Star did. Also, the Watcher fallen angel/demon side characters (Ros, Pen, Zel, and Chaz) have me laughing out loud, and I'm obsessed with Star's relationship with Cross and Hound. Can't wait for book 3!
