SPOILER ALERT!
This story was AMAZING! From the concept to the implementation of the plot to the memorable characters, I was completely enthralled with this book from start to finish. It’s a wild ride of suspicion, betrayal, and the external dilemma of knowing who’s right and who’s wrong. Amanda Dew is such a talented writer. Her voice really spoke to me. I understood all her narration and thoughts, and I thought her descriptions, in particular, were really grasping.
There is SO MUCH to love about this story, so I’ll break down my thoughts into parts.
CHARACTERS:
Aurora “Rory” (the protagonist): I thought Aurora was a great protagonist for the story. I loved her importance to both The Dream organization as well as the rebels. The reveal that she is the only lobe tech capable of extracting/seeing memories was such an insane and unexpected twist. It really played into her journey of who is using her and who is not, who are the good guys and who are the bad. Reading about her internal dilemma really piqued my emotions, as it was a great way to keep my intrigue throughout the story.
Jordan & Emma (the lovebirds): Jordan and Emma have that romance you really crave in your life. Their commitment to each other, through memories and lack of memories, is really shown throughout the story. To know how much they love each other and to know what they have had to sacrifice for the rebels is so heartbreaking to read but also something that kept me invested. They were intoxicating to read about, and they are the emotional crux of the story. I also loved how each one of Jordan’s memories that Aurora saw was named after an emotion. It was a clever foreshadowing.
Noah (Emma’s brother): Noah has that rebel charm. I liked how he played into Rory’s questioning about who/what she was working for, and I liked reading how he challenges/taunts her with more lighthearted yet necessary dialogue. He felt like a release in the story—kind of like the comedic timing—but he also kept up the threat of the rebels and The Dream. I felt like I got a little sense of some attraction with Aurora and Noah . . . Will they get together in the sequels?
PLOT:
The plot was fast-paced and gripping. It felt like a psychological, dystopian thriller. The mind games that were displayed in each scene wonderfully distorted my sense of “Wait, are they good or bad?” I really loved guessing who the bad guy was. Also, I really feel like this book is a really genius book. The idea of looking into someone’s thoughts to get information on weather-controlling terrorists? Such a fun, imaginative idea. The plot twists were also another bonus because each one was so surprising and thrilling. I loved them! My eyes couldn’t read this book fast enough.
ENDING:
And with all this, the ending spurred my hunger for the rest of the series. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. The story was wrapped up in a really nice way, where most of my questions were satisfied in the plot, and I felt like the open-ended scenes at the finale did well to set up a sequel/series. I would definitely be interested in knowing what happens to Rory, Noah, Jordan, and Emma next!
FAVORITE LINES:
“The familiar breathlessness and darkness take over, and I patiently wait until I’m thrust into my awe-inspiring playground.”
“I’m in the story.”
“The mix of perfume and her spearmint gum is intoxicating. And it’s dripping in sarcasm. If sarcasm had a smell. Whatever it is, her smell is the best smell.”
“The sound hits my ears like a chorus of bells played by a flock of angels or some crap like that.”
“I may not be able to give Emma the world, but I can give her tonight.”
Thanks for such a tremendously engaging read!
