The Other Realm #3

Glimmer of Death

Rate this book
I’m Jinx, a private investigator, a truth seeker and an empath. Even with all that magic at my fingertips, I don’t know if I can save my best friend.

And she’s not the only ill one. The magical creatures of the Other Realm are falling sick – even the supposedly immortal ones. The illness is striking two by two like a plague filled Noah’s Ark. The mermen asked for help first, but it turns out they’re just the tip of the iceberg.

Gato and I need to find the source of the sickness, to stop it spreading and to find the antidote. Emory’s adoptive parents are two of the ones that have fallen sick and I can’t watch him lose his pseudo parents when I’ve already lost mine. I’ll do anything to save the stricken victims - even if it means working with my parents’ own killer…

I know this much, the illness isn’t natural, and whoever is behind this has nothing but sinister intentions.

I need to find the perpetrator.

I need to find the cure.

And I need to work out how I feel about Emory. I don’t know which task will be harder…

OH MY GOD

I am still hanging from this ride... What an absolutely amazing journey!!!!

These characters and this world have formed an imaginary getaway for me and I honestly just want to lose myself in the pages of excitement...

Emory Prime Elite strong, yet soft, commanding, yet passive and a character that I can fully immerse myself in... Ms Harris has totally brought this character to life in a fully believable fashion... I am totally jealous of Jinx, Jessica who is such as bad ass heroine in her own right!

Of course, Gato remains my favourite!

I found myself pouring over these pages, the excitement and horror of not knowing what was going to happen ate me alive... It's been a while since a book pulled at me with this kind of strength, I completely lost myself in the story!

Feeling excited to start the next book but also feeling content ❤️

This is third in a UF series and there's a global arc to the stories that build from book to book. I definitely recommend reading in order.

You know what you're getting by this point. I always worry when I see a blurb for a disease storyline because, while scary, a disease is the opposite of active. Further, if it's an artificial or targeted disease, then you know you have a specific type of antagonist—i.e. one who avoids confrontation. For an action series, that's deadly. And this story was the worse for it.

Jinx and Emory struggle throughout this story to find a target. That's just frustrating. And it doesn't help that the story actually bifurcates as two factions show up behind the plot, further confusing, well, everything.

That said, there's some good movement on the overarching plot and some interesting depth to both new and old characters.

I also liked the reveals with regards to Emory and why he's so attached to Jinx. This actually worked better than I expected and fully reconciled me to his attachment to her. Only now I'm wondering if she has had time to form an attachment as mature as his. I think the jury is still out on that, mostly because she is inexperienced on the relationship front.

Anyway, I'm calling this 3½ stars that I'm rounding up on the strength of Emory's development. I'm definitely interested in the next (last?).

A note about Steamy: They have sex, but most of it isn't on page. Just barely enough of it is that I'm tipping this into the steamy category. That may be unwarranted depending on taste, but I think it got there.

These books not only have the power to pull me out of the most dire of reading slumps, but also boost my mood so much. They're so enjoyable I consider them therapeutic. Every time I think they can't get better, they do! I don't think I'll ever have enough of this series.

description

There is humour, sweetness, sexiness, mystery, sorrow, magic, and a shocker ending. Everything I could possibly ask for. I love this series so much, it's the perfect mix of magic and reality. Jinx is so... human, yet wholly unique. And oh Emory... I have no idea where this romance is going to lead but I'll definitely be sticking around to find out 👀

I'm going to add a trigger warning to this one. I would by no means consider this book dark, but it does deal with terminal illness at the start of the story. The emotional impact of this is communicated very well. Readers who have been affected by this may find it upsetting to read.

✨I adore this series! It's magical with a mix of mystery solving and a building of love story in each book installment! Jinx is the main character trying to solve each mysterious happening while trying to figure out who killed her parents and if she's ready to be in love with the same person for the rest of her life. Let's also not forget she is still learning how to hone in on her own magical powers!

✨As we continue through each book we learn more about characters we've already met and meet new characters as well suspense building and clue finding into what really happened to Jinx's parents.

✨To all my fantasy genre followers, you've got to read this series! Book 3 comes out November 1st, but the other 2 books are available now in the @amazonkindle store!

✨Thank you to Heather G. Harris for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I like this character and I like the world building but every book ends on a cliffhanger and I’m just not happy with it.

Let’s talk romance. If you like steamy then this is not it. The sex scenes happen off page so we get to see the afterglow but that’s it.

I like that she held out for love. She is so anti-insta-love and that feels refreshing.

Somehow the ending felt too rushed. The notebook at the end was a bit of a deus ex machina. It felt anticlimactic

Meh. I’m left feeling like I’m not so excited for the next one. I may read it. I may not.

“Find out who did this to my daughter and if it can be undone. Then I will tell you what you seek.” - Bastion

It’s been three weeks since Jinx learned the heart-wrenching truth about Lucy - three weeks in which she’s exhausted all efforts to save her friend. At the end of her rope, she's forced to resort to desperate measures but at what cost?

Meanwhile, Lucy isn’t the only one who’s ill. Magical creatures from the Other Realm are succumbing to a mysterious virus that is targeting two members of every species. When Emory’s adoptive parents become infected, Jinx races against time to track down the source and find an antidote before it’s too late.

In the midst of her investigation, Jinx finds herself teaming up with an unlikely ally who promises to provide her with the answers she seeks regarding her parent's untimely death. But will she be prepared for what they have to say?

Heather continues to deliver with this third instalment of the Other Realm series which picks up three weeks after the devastating conclusion of the previous book. Jinx’s desperation and anguish were palpable in the first quarter of the book and I found myself waiting with bated breath to learn the outcome of a beloved characters fate.

Meanwhile, someone is targeting creatures from the Other Realm with a deadly virus. When the team uncovers evidence that suggests the virus was manufactured in labs owned by someone high up in the Connection, Jinx must unmask the perpetrator before the stability between both realms becomes compromised.

“I lived for 120 years without the Connection and it was chaos. Vampires preyed on younglings, dryads killed anyone that damaged their trees, werewolves and vampires were fighting. There was death every day. Now we have peace. It may be built on lies, but at least we are safe. Together we are stronger. - Emory

Supporting Jinx in her latest investigation of course is everyone’s favourite dragon. Seeing their relationship develop over the course of the book was gratifying to say the least.

The authors writing style continues to tick every box for me; main characters with depth of personality that I can root for, believable background story and a balanced mix of relationships, tension, action, humour and mystery.

This is one jam-packed story, with a fast-flowing plot, myriad plot twists and a jaw-dropping reveal that will leave fans desperately awaiting the next instalment. I for one cannot wait!!

Ideal for fans of urban fantasy, magical realms, wizards, vampires, werewolves, trolls, mermaids, dryads, seers, daemons, hellhounds, secret societies and mysteries etc

This is such a fun series to get lost in. Each book brings more adventures and mayhem for Jinx and the gang. In Glimmer of Death, she is hired to investigate a mysterious illness that is targeting the creatures of the Other Realm. As Jinx follows the trail of clues to discovering who is behind the illness, she finds herself closer to learning who killed her parents.

I've enjoyed immersing myself in the magic of this world. Jinx is developing deep friendships, and the romance is getting mighty steamy. This book ends on a big cliffhanger, so I'll be starting the 4th book right away.

Thanks again to Heather for providing an arc of book 3!
Book 3 picks up a few weeks after the end of book 2. Jinx is still trying to cope with the turn of events at the end of book 2 (I wont say more because spoilers!) And it's not long before we have a new mystery to solve! There is a mysterious virus attacking creatures in The Other and Jinx is on the case to find out where it is coming from and who has caused it! Jinx is slowly learning more about her gifts and powers and with the help of others her character continues to grow. Jinx continues to be fierce, incredibly loyal and smart, she is the perfect role model.
We meet a few new characters which is great and a couple returning ones.
I loved watching the relationship between a certain 2 bloom, and I am praying to the bookish gods that they are end game because I refuse to accept anything else! The romance kicks up a notch - fades to black which is why I took half a star off because I love me some steam lol
The end of the book had me shook! Like what on earth, I did not see that coming! I cannot wait for the final book to get some answers and hopefully some closure!

5/5

This is the third book in The Other Realm series, and it is by far my favourite so far! There is more romance in this book, and I am HERE for it!

‘You can always run to me.’

The second book left us with such a crushing cliffhanger, and the third book picks up straight away, with just as much mystery, twists and surprises.

Magical creatures of the Other Realm start mysteriously falling ill, and it’s up to Jinx to find the source of the plague. But when two of Emory’s close friends fall ill, the stakes only get higher.

‘Be brave. You can do it. You’ll rise above them all.’

Ufff this book!! I absolutely love Jinx’s character and seeing her relationship with smokin hot Emory bloom - I mean he is a dragon so what’s not to like?!

‘Both human and dragon women throw themselves at me, yet the woman that I love thinks I’m a duck.’

Heather did such a great job of keeping me sitting on the edge of my seat, not knowing where the story is going to take me.
Seriously, if you haven’t read this series yet, you should!

Whoa! This book picks up straight after the last and good grief was it emotionally charged! Within the 1st few minutes of this book, I was in tears! Who wouldn't be, when their best friend was dying and there was nothing they could do, magically or otherwise. The emotions are so raw, so gut wrenchingly, I couldn't help but feel Jinx's despair. Then, in desperation, Jinx does the unthinkable and there I was, holding my breath, my eyes like saucers, at her awful decision. A gut wrenching decision. Although, I must admit, I loved the outcome! The way Ms Harris played this out, well shoot, just fabulous! She's given us Lucy 2.0, I do so love the warm relationship Jess and lord Samuel share, these scenes showcase it superbly. And then Jinx discovers an unintended consequence of using Glimmer, can't say what ( no spoilers!) but suffice to say it's super cool! Oh gosh do I love Emory? He's not flappable, has an amazing easy going nature, he's loyal, he's strength comes from who he is, not just because he is a dragon, he's charming, he's gorgeous, he's protective, he's loving, he's just yummy! And I don't think a guy, ok, dragon, could be more boyfriend material! Their relationship is a thing of beauty, all encompassing, all consuming, how I loved seeing it progress. Jinx is one of my favourite characters ever, her fierce need for independence, is ingrained, although her trust issues threaten to override her common sense. But her love and compassion, and of course, her ability to truth seek, finally has her admitting her vulnerability to herself. I loved seeing the growth, her evolving, both mentally and magically. As the relationship between Jinx and Emory develops, she realises that she has passed the point of no return and finally embraces it, at which point, I was doing a cartwheel of delight! And Gato, well, all I can say about him, is, I want a dog just like him! I mean, who wouldn't want a hellhound who's like a gentle puppy? I do so enjoy all these characters, every one distinctly fabulous.

Another mystery presents itself, there's a deadly virus that has Jess going all out to find the who, the why and to stop the spread. The awesome new characters Ms Harris brings in, well they just fit so snuggly into the story! I adored meeting all the new creatures, the mer, the wolves, the druids, the elementals, the vampires, the griffins, we get it all! Each book gives us the comfort of familiar characters and the author expands on each superbly, giving me more insight, more depth as the story unfolds. The majesty with reading a Heather G Harris book is the pacing, the awesome action, the very cool banter, the humour which is so natural and characters who are so darn likeable! The mystery deepens throughout the book, and when they discover the perpetrators, it's a scramble to stop them. What happens next is full of drama and lots of lovely magic, unexpected allies and deadly action. Loved the plot, loved the pace, absolutely love this world! I'm thoroughly captivated by this series and am looking forward to the next installment!

Still thoroughly enjoying this series! There are still holes that keep me from rating the books higher but not from me loving the journey anyway.

The plot in this installment was a bit confusing because it splits. Jinx is trying to help her friend with a terminal sickness - and there is another something that is killing magical creatures of all kinds. I’m not big into the terminal illness trope and think it lessened the very reason we read the series. BUT it does work out at the end in a super creative and interesting way, so I’m satisfied. AND, there’s a big surprise at the end that sends Jinx - and readers - for a loop. Now THAT is a genius way to keep us all reading while still tying up the ends in this installment!

I really like the way Emory and Jinx’s relationship is settling in and becoming strong. I still don’t understand this deep connection… at least from Jinx’s POV. It’s all very surface all the way around, and that is annoying. But again, I’m enjoying the ride so much we’ll let it slide and jump into the next installment with vigor!

Damned by faint praise

I am not particularly a fan of the third realm elements. It also feels like a we move through the over arching plot within the series, Jinx becomes more and more special snowflake with each book. At this rate, I'm one special ability or power away from calling her a Mary Sue.

While I do like the books, I like them in the way one stress eats-i don't currently have anything better to read, so why not? I'll probably finish the series, as the next one is currently out, and the books aren't BAD by any means- just not great.

Coming November 1st is the release of Glimmer of Death, book 3 in Heather G. Harris' The Other Realm series. For those of you who have been following my reviews of this new Urban Fantasy author, you'll know I've landed firmly on #TeamEmory with Glimmer of Hope, but for spoilery reasons, I can't tell you why this third installment has me wishing I had a dragon of my very own...

After reading Glimmer of Hope, I was really anticipating a struggle for Jinx trying to save her best friend from dying and me doing a lot of ugly crying whilst reading. I expected that sort of being the focus (in addition to obviously continuing the search for the person who ordered the death of her parents as well as the furthering of the love triangle between Stone, Jinx, and Emory), but then Harris surprised me again!

Rather than spending a lot of time and anguish on saving Lucy, Harris solved that issue pretty quickly, albeit with a bit of emotional torture for the reader, and moved right along to further cementing the bond between Jinx and Emory. A backstory I never expected emerged, which wrapped of some interesting loose ends from the previous books that weren't really loose ends... I know, I am being a bit mysterious but only because I want you to fully enjoy the way Harris weaves this series together. She never does what I expect or think I see coming, and I love every single turn of the page that takes us further deeper into the Other Realm.

Luckily, I don't have to wait too much longer for the fourth book, which while the title is yet unknown to me, at least I know it will be out on December 1st. Additionally, I finally received my paperback copies of the first two books in the series and I cannot wait to order Glimmer of Death and have it join its sisters on my shelf. The covers are beautiful online, but absolutely stunning in person. I only wish I had the ability to share the cover and title of the fourth book with all of you!

If you love urban fantasy, magic and all things paranormal, I highly recommend introducing yourself to The Other. The first two books are available in both Kindle and Paperback via Amazon, with Glimmer of Death available for pre-order!

This series just gets more and more detailed. A world of magic, characters, and wonder makes me love reading urban fantasy all over again. This is the kind of book that got me back into reading and led me to read so many different genres and tropes. Add in the fact the author is new to the writing world, and I am beyond impressed. If you have not read the first two books, I highly recommend them.

Book 3, we pick right up at the point that we ended in book 2….choices about someone's life have to be made, and that might even mean giving them no choice at all. It’s first couple of chapters are filled with raw emotions, and a twist that leads us down another rabbit hole to more magic. The opportunity to possibly speak to the person that killed Jinx’s parents, becomes more than just a chance. Jinx (FMC) finds out that her boyfriend, Emory (MMC), is more than just the prime of the Dragon’s and their relationship may be a little more complicated. Then add in Jinx learning more about her powers and what she can truly do. This book just gives you so much and like always the ending is what?….this is where you are leaving me?

Whaaat just happened?
Book 2 left me with a lump in my throat now I’m just screaming at the ending in Book 3 total groan out loud face planting happening here.
But honestly this book had me on the edge of my seat. We get the chance to really see Jinx, the author does a wonderful job at exploring her character more. Her relationship with Lucy and the importance of family and friends. But did I see any of that happening hell no.
Seriously Glimmer even though it’s a knife (magical at that) it definitely has sass.
There were parts where Jinx anguish just felt like they were seeping out of the pages, felt like my heart was being ripped out.

I absolutely loved the series and Glimmer of Death was just right at the very top.
I honestly wasn’t sure about the emotional connection between Jinx and Emory but you know what I’ve re read it and it is just perfect for the setting and pace of this book. I love their story and I loved them both from the get go. I mean a freakin dragon what ever else do you need.

The middle part of the book, was just a massive light bulb Moment of realisation, that spark of adventure and excitement. I literally saw none of that coming and Heather does a fantastic job of not letting you see what is going on until it literally slaps you in the face, cream pie moment.

You get to actually work things out at the same time Jinx does, it’s like working the case with her.

Blitzing through 4 books in a weekend makes it hard to write individual reviews after the fact, because they kind of all run together into one big story. That said, I particularly loved this one - puzzling out the virus, and Jinx's backstory ... plus so much wonderful Jinx/Emory. I'm hooked!

someone is using the supernatural creatures as testing ground for a designer virus.
More romance with Emory, a revelation about her parent's murder and Lucy is dying.

So lots going on in this one.

Safety is good but I wanted some justice for Lucy and there was NONE. wtf?
Maybe in a future book?

Hmmm

I still had fun reading this one though.

Woah… Book three was just as amazing as the first two. I adore Jinx. She is probably one of my favorite main characters in all 600ish books I have read. She’s so relatable and I feel connected to her. This just shows how good the author is! This series is one of my top five favorite series. Every time I revisit this world I’m reminded just how much I love it. I can’t wait to read the next book!

I have been enjoying the world and the characters, but there were way too much action and different plots crammed into one short book.

1. The FMC Jinx's best friend on the verge of death and save her.
2. Time travelling shenanigans, especially with her romantic interest Emory.
3. General relationship development with Emory and integrating with his dragon brethren.
4. Investigating her parents' murders and tracking down the assassin responsible.
4a. Meeting the griffin assassin Bastion and adding a mysterious motivation around his significant help.
5. Investigating a mysterious virus getting spread among the creatures, plus some kidnappings.
6. Learning to use her IR, empath, and truth seeking abilities.
7. Figuring out her bond with the vampire Nate and the other vampyrs.
8. Running her general private investigation business with the Other realm.
9. Finding and dealing with the corruption in the Connection.
9a. Overthrowing a corrupt .
10. Her relationship with the Connection enforcer Stone (if any).

With so many different issues going on, a lot of them ended up developed at a very surface level with plenty of deux ex machine plot devices to solve the problem in a few pages. Jinx is building up to be quite the Mary Sue - she has these special snowflake empath and truth seeking powers, has a bonded hellhound that allows her to time travel and go between Other/Common realms at a whim, bonded a vampyr for convenient emergency help, bonded a sentient dagger that can give her (and others around her) arbitrary Other abilities, and is conveniently the mate of the Prime Elite, who is rich and powerful in his own right.

The ending note mentioned that book 4 would wrap up everything for Jinx, so onward we go...

Romance:

WOW! I This is a third book in a series and I can honestly say it is by far the best book yet! As a huge romance fan I especially appreciate the romantic aspect of the book. I love Jinx and Emory and I think they are perfect together. Their story goes even deeper than I would have expected. The author did an amazing job creating it in a way that is surprising and simply beautiful. It makes you look a things differently but at the same time, it just makes sense. They both deserve their happy ending and I cannot wait to see it. (Stone, who? 😂)

The second book left us with sad news, and while the first part of the book was emotional, all I’m gonna say is that Jinx is never giving up on her loved ones, especially after loosing her parents the way she did.

Just as the previous two books, this story is full of mystery and surprises, you might suspect some but you will never guess the other ones. The Glimmer of Death focuses on a mysterious illness that attacks the Other Creatures. There are characters from the previous books that we all know and love (or not) and we get to meet new characters, some good, some bad, but all equally important to the story. Jinx is once again hired to investigate what is happening in the Other Realm, working closely with her friends and Emory. Along the way she’s learning new things about herself, the people behind what’s happening to the creatures and about her parents.

This book is gonna leave you wanting more, just like the other two did, and you won’t want to miss the finale. I am counting days until I can get my hands on the last book so I can finally learn what really happened, and why.

I received and ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I can’t pinpoint what it was about this book that made me a little less into it than the first two, but there was something.

I am definitely getting a bit confused about Stone’s character and his role in the series. Book one he was the love interest- easy. At the end of book two, we find out that he wasn’t ignoring Jinx by choice, and that he still wants her- and even though she’s with Emory, he makes a (admittedly very lame and desperate) declaration about how he wants to spend the rest of his life with Jinx. Okay… so it seems like we’re setting up a love triangle here, right? Right?

Wrong. Stone is kept on as a side character, but a VERY minor side character, and he literally never mentions his supposed love for Jinx again. Huh? This honestly just reads like the author originally intended for Jinx and Stone to end up together, but midway through writing the second book decided Emory was cooler and went with that instead. Don’t get me wrong, I like Emory, but Stone’s roles in the series has been strange to say the least.

Also, the world-building gets murky in this one. So we can all share each other’s powers just by giving a few paper cuts with the magic dagger? Soooo… why aren’t we giving EVERYONE EVERY power? Like, literally what’s stopping us from doing that if there’s no consequences whatsoever?

The plot was interesting enough to read, although I definitely couldn’t always remember who was who and why they were doing whatever they were doing. I still like Jinx’s character, though. I’m going to finish out the next book, so we’ll see.

The h is turning into a real Mary Sue. She’s only known about magic for a couple of months but can outdo everyone and do all sorts of different kind of magics that others can’t.

She’s also really bossy and self-centered. She decides that she is tired and tells Nate (a vampire) to take her to a place where he can’t enter. So while she sleeps the night Nate has to stay outside in the car. She could have gone to her house where Nate could have stayed in her spare room.

I am absolutely loving reading this series straight through! Each book just gets better and better and I have no idea why left it so late to read!

In this one Jessica, aka Jinx, and Emory have a battle on their hands with a deadly virus that is attacking the creatures of the Other realm, those who are dragons, trolls, mermaids and so on. None of the human side being are affected at all. However, as they dig deeper and deeper, things escalate and while they manage to fit the many pieces of the puzzle together, it's not an easy task to find who they are looking for.

In this one, Jinx also confronts her parents' killer and despite her feelings towards him, he actually turns out to be a fairly good ally in this race against time. I just wish he could have given her more answers than he did!

The romance level finally heats up between Jinx and Emory as well, after Jinx finally admits her feelings for him firstly to herself and then to him. I think they definitely have the makings of a good relationship here and I can't wait to see how it all works out for them.

Jumping straight on to the next book in this series! Can't wait to see what is in store for them this time!

Well, that was a full-on book. From start to finish, a lot is going on. First Lucy and the pain around her illness. It clawed at my heart that did. The author explains grief and fear so well that it's tear filling.
Second, we have the story and what she's hired for this time. It's filled with action and magic and a fight against hate. That doesn't mean I didn't get a little choked up.
Last is the love interest. Finally, more than a snog...but sadly and this has to be because of the other smutty books I've read. There are indications of what steamy things are going to happen, no description, though. So no smut, just the open door, and they are down. That's just my preference, maybe. It just seems a shame not to get some good steamy scenes after the build.
Still good without the smut.
