I woke up in a battlefield triage tent, bloody, battered, and crippled. It wasn't just my arm and shoulder that was broken, but also my mind. I couldn't remember anything—my name, who or where I was, or what had happened to me.
Could that get worse? Of course. The battle wasn’t over, and it appeared that our enemy wasn't just content with victory. No. They sought to wipe us out. But why? If I lived long enough, perhaps I would find out.
Not everything was bleak, however. I had friends at my side—ones who challenged our cowardly leaders and fought to give me a chance. We could fight together and escape. But in an ether-ravaged, post-apocalyptic world cast back into the dark ages, where feudal lords once again fight for control over land and resources, that may be easier said than done.
Join Takemi in this wuxia style progression fantasy, as he journeys through a post-apocalyptic landscape. Ether ruined the old world, but it is building a new one, where mental constructs called mind palaces grant cultivators game-like perks and unlock almost superhuman abilities.
Tak wakes up at the end of a large battle which his group of mercenaries lost badly. He got knocked on the head and now he doesn't remember anything.
It's twenty something years after the apocalypse happened, and no one wants to talk about it anymore. They're all talked out. Electricity is a thing of the past, and ether has now appeared (gamers call it mana). Humanity has regressed to a semi-feudal system of city-states, with the wilds in between the cities left in shambles.
After a lot of work repairing his body, Tak is eager to get back and do some more missions. He doesn't remember his old life, but since there is nothing he can really do about it, he wants to move forward.
So.... they take a mission.
I'll stop there. This is an interesting, and perhaps more realistic take on an apocalypse. Statistics don't appear in the corner of your eye here, you need a special device which only nobles have. As mercenaries, they take the jobs they can get their hands on. Some are good, and some aren't.
From there we watch Tak start to increase his abilities, not just internally but with his swords.
This felt like a dark, gritty story to me. Tak and the team of mercenaries are well developed, and the story world is sketched out well. It almost feels like we skipped book one of what happened during the apocalypse and moved on to post apocalypse life. The story is very linear, although the first 16% is harder to get through simply because we don't know what's happening.
Stick with it. It gets better. The ending was odd, and while I won't spoil it, I came up with a couple different alternative endings. I get why it ends the way it does because of the setup for book 2, but still.
The notifications are few and far between because it requires a special device. The editing is excellent.
Mistakes: I found four and listed them on Goodreads.
Plot: I found this to be rather boring. It's been years since the collapse of the civilizations of earth. Surviving cities have turned into city states. Those in power know what happened and how to use a new power called ether to make themselves stronger, faster, better. Those outside the halls of power seem to know very little even after all these years. Even after figuring stuff out, why didn't they hunt more and get stronger???
Characters: The four main human characters are ok when it is just them. Get them around their ladies and they turn into giant dorks, that can't seem to hold an intelligent conversation. Talk with the support characters should be no different than with each other. Found the sex added very little to the story. Also found it funny that they had no problem killing, but when very bad people fell into their hands that needed to be killed, all of a sudden morality would show up and they would let nature kill them so they wouldn't be murderers??? This made no sense and really bothered me. The wolf was the best character. Yes his new pack is stupid.
There's a wolf named Omega and he becomes part of the two-legged wolf pack. There's action. There's wolf-like strength and abilities (agility & sense of smell & awareness). I gave this three stars for Omega alone to be honest.
Wolfpack will hunt you down and make you finish it.
This book starts off in a kind of strange place, our MC wakes up in a surgical tent with no memory of who he is. The amnesia doesnt effect his skills he quickly finds out, and the story takes shape from there. Our MC, Tak, struggles to regain his memories while rebuilding his life from the ground up. Things quickly spiral out of control as he and his friends, who havent given up ok n him despite his amnesia, take an job for money. The stats on this one were a nice mix of oriental elements with light crunch for actual numbers as well as skills and minor abilities. The combat was very nice, and the premise of the post apocalyptic world is intriguing. I cant wait to learn more about how the ether came into the world and things changed, as well as the current state of things. And of course to see what happens once Tak inevitably regains his memories.
“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis. I hate trying to define my enjoyment and describe facets of it that would appeal to someone else. It is simply not my style. But for the sake of those fishing for clues:
Character development: good Game elements: very minimal Harem elements: none Tone: serious and tense throughout
I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.
Overall, I liked the story despite there being some bumps along the way. There were a few errors and pacing issues, that ultimately didn’t detract from the story too much. My biggest critique would be that the “villains” in the story always come across as trying too hard to be evil almost. In what is supposed to be a world with a lot of grey areas, it seems like the villains were always the blackest of villains. It broke my immersion a bit. Otherwise, I enjoyed the story and the magic/cultivation system and look forward to the next in the series.
I have read some of the other books that this author has written, and this book is by far his best. It is a post apocalyptic tale of an ether incursion into our world.
This book has many mysteries and only answered some of the questions that I had, but left many more still unknown. I can say that there were some interesting twists to the story. It was a cultivation realrpg fantasy adventure mystery. spaß!
I was sorry when it ended. Hoping the next installment will come soon.
I never get tired of the amnesia trope. It's such an easy way to seamlessly squeeze enormous amounts of exposition into a complex fantasy world. But is that all that's going on here? Is Takemi the same man he was before the accident? There's a mystery buried here.
While this book is an easy read, it's really a set-up for the series. More questions are asked than answered. And our protagonist, along with his team, is clearly at the start of an adventure.
I liked this enough to check out at least one other series by this author. Here's hoping I strike gold.
Good read. The MC awakens with amnesia and some new abilities. Very few seems to have his new abilities and he has very little idea how to progress. This is the first in a series where he is learning/relearning this new post apocalyptic world. He is a bit thick at times but is learning and should be a fun series as he learns his new powers and helps his friends as well.
I was on and off about trying this for months. I will just take the plunge.
This didn't go how I expected this would have turned out. They (author) used the ole' amnesia trick, so we the readers can learn about the world, and ask questions whose answers should already be know. "meh".
The whole wolf thing and apocalyptic world wasn't anything new, but it passed the time.
Whether you are in to LITRPG, Sci-Fi or cultivation stories this has you covered. The beginning has some necessary world building and can be a little confusing. Don’t stop reading because the character building and adventure starts and it never slows down. I throughly enjoyed this book and so will you!
I want to encourage anyone who likes cultivation stories to read this. There are elements of apocalyptic events, the breakdown of political systems, mercenaries, ether (mana) manipulation, romance, wolf partners and so much more. I want to know more about Takime's background and growth, along with his friends.
Economics I’m not sure about in this world. No mention of farming, food production, etc. Our supply chain is way different than in medieval times. Say 90% in medieval times worked in agriculture, vs now around 1% in the US.
I Liked the mc and the overall story. The cultivation was interesting but somewhat confusing as the main party had little information on how it worked and their success was hit or miss.
The story is a bit hard too follow at first but once you understand it is worth the effort. I love omega such a great way to narrate the story. I can't wait to read the next one.
The book is really good. For me it started out. Slow. But got better and better. Was disappointed when I got to the end because I wanted more. Cannot wait to the next book
Once past the first half it got increasingly better. Then the Wolf on the cover showed up! Ended without a cliffhanger, BUT obviously needs the next volume! Pretty Intense story/action after the 60% mark! 😎
Has everything going for this book. Great fighting sequences, powerful monsters, strange locations, plots and unique cultivation system. Can’t wait to read the next book.
A finely crafted new series!!! This first book really opens your eyes to a what if society failed! Excellent world building, powerful characters both good and bad. A nice spin on cultivation and mixed weapon warfare!!! More more more
I found the story invigorating and addicting once I really got into it. The main characters help to really pull in the reader and now I can’t wait to read what happens next.
The narration of the story is amazing Omega's in particular. The plot in particular. So as usual Thank You Mr Lange very good story.Number Two soon please.
