Sally Morgan is recognised as one of Australia's best known Aboriginal artists and writers. She is one of a number of successful urban Aboriginal artists.
Sally was born in Perth in 1951, the eldest of five children. As a child she found school difficult because of questions from other students about her appearance and family background. She understood from her mother that she and her family were from India. However, when Sally was fifteen she learnt that she and her sister were in fact of Aboriginal descent, from the Palku people of the Pilbara.
This experience of her hidden origins, and subsequent quest for identity, was the stimulus for her first book My Place published in 1987. It tells the story of her self discovery through reconnection with her Aboriginal culture and community. The book was an immediate success and has since sold over half a million copies in Australia. It has also been published in the United States, Europe and Asia.
Her second book Wanamurraganya was published in 1989. It is the biography of her grandfather, Jack McPhee. She has also written five books for children.
As well as writing, Sally Morgan has established an international reputation as an artist. She has works in numerous private and public collections in Australia and the United States, including the Australian National Gallery and the Dobell Foundation collection. Her work is particularly popular in the United States. Her work as an artist is excellently described and illustrated in the book Art of Sally Morgan.
She has received many awards, including from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission. As a part of the celebration in 1993 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, her print Outback was selected by international art historians as one of 30 paintings and sculptures for reproduction on a stamp representing an article of the Declaration.
My Place remains her most influential work, not only because of its very wide popularity but also because it provided a new model for other writers, particularly those of indigenous background.
She is currently Director of the Centre for Indigenous History and Arts at The University of Western Australia.
I am an absolute sucker for anything Disney relating to concept art and behind the scenes things plus Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios so what wouldn’t I love about this? I had to take a star off because none of the showcased art work in the book was from any of the female artists/animators who contributed. I really loved and appreciated the bios of the main animators in the back, but I feel like they all should have had some of their work shown somewhere throughout.
It is no small secret that Disney is a huge love in my life, other than reading books. So when I saw the Disney Animated Classics collection I couldn’t help but buy them. These books are beautiful hardback editions, filled with artwork from the films which is really interesting to look at, as they use both stills from the final cut as well as artwork from when they explored different designs and storyboards. Unfortunately, the writing is very basic, and rushes through the story which made this a VERY fast 10 minute read.
This is an incredibly quick read as it is very short and is essentially just the plot of the film laid out on paper. However it has some artwork from the film as well as concept art, and I love looking at artwork for animated films. It’s really interesting seeing the process from initial conception to final product and how the characters appearances change and develop throughout the process.
In the animated credits, David Pruiksma's animation drawing is listed on page 68, there is no drawing on this page. Same for Mel Shaw, animation drawing listed on page 64, there is no drawing. Chris Sanders animation drawing on page 67, no drawing.
Perfect for Beauty and the Beast fans, Disney Fans, and or Art fans. Loved the concept art that were the illustrations. I like learning more about each artist in the back of the book.

For as long as I can remember, this has been one of my favorite Disney stories. Despite the story being considerably abridged, again a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. 🌹
This is the coolest book I’ve recently discovered!!! It contains the classic Disney story we all know and love, but it adds a mix of the original illustrations, as well as animated pencil sketches and vintage photos from the classic fairytale- I paid more attention to the photos than the text, but a lot of great books have pictures, in my opinion 🤩
This was soooo dreamy! A much needed dose of nostaglia! AND THE ILLUSTRATIONS??!! UTTERLY WONDERFUL! Can't wait to pick it up again this coming winter.
*gently places it on the shelf and stares at it with utter adoration*
Beautiful! I loved the retelling of the story with the different illustrations from the concept art and the movie. It was really nice that they included a little summary of some of the people that worked on Beauty and the Beast. A great addition for any Beauty and the Beast fan.
Edición muy cuidada, pero tiene muy poco texto y no se disfruta apenas, se lee en media hora. Para niños está genial, pero para adultos, un poco corto.
