It’s Christmas time in Winterville – and second chances are in the air…
When Everley Winter lays eyes on her ex-husband for the first time in years, those are the last words she expects to hear. But it’s true, the paperwork never came through, and she’s still married to the man she thought was the love of her life.
Dylan never wanted to hurt Everley the first time, but a second time is unforgiveable. He makes himself a vow to make her happy, no matter what it takes. But when he offers her a clean divorce things begin to get complicated.
When a project he’s involved in goes wrong, Dylan and Everley are forced to pretend they’re happily married. But the time they spend together reminds them just how good their relationship used to be – and how hot the chemistry is between them.
The only problem is, Dylan is due to leave town when Christmas is over, and Everley knows that they’ll be finished for good.
Which leaves her wondering about one thing. Is it possible to fall out of love with your husband all over again?

My Review:
Carrie Elks has a knack for pulling me in and involving me in her irresistible series with each installment being fresh and crisp even while updating and entwining the characters from the previous installments. She deftly and underhandedly does this so well yet each volume can still stand alone with strong and entertaining storylines. The community she has created for this series is unique, enticing, and appealing on all levels with multi-layered and quirky characters who are so well textured with surprising details and complications that they feel alive and are living and breathing on my Kindle during perusal. I covet Ms. Elk’s magical word skills and marvel that she has churned out two deliciously engaging holiday-themed small-town romances in a row.
I loved the story of Everly and Dylan. How they learned to compromise, to recognize what others already knew—that they belonged together. What started out as a favor became real. Real became scary. Scary became the catalyst to forever as Dylan faced his fears and Everly learned that it was okay to admit her love. The length they go to in order to prove it gave some light hearted moments in the book. Their hidden affair everyone knew about was perfect for the story. Another great read in this series—am looking forward to the next installment.
It had a great premise, however it was executed with a series of “clichés” making everything entirely too predictable.
I never appreciate as much a misunderstanding or final conflict that is a result of miscommunication and things getting blown out of proportion for next to no reason.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntarily, honest review of it.
I love reading Christmas stories so when the writer Carrie Elks shared that she would write a series about a small town where the residents love Christmas with a passion, I was very curious about it. I enjoyed the first book ‘Welcome to Winterville’ (and the prequel) in the ‘Winterville’ series very much so I was looking forward to reading the second story (Hearts in winter). And after reading it I can say that I loved this Christmas story even more than the first one! I’m so happy that the writer decided to write this series.
‘Hearts in winter’ is a second chance romance story. Everley and Dylan grew up together in the small town ‘Winterville’ and they were each other first love. They married young but sadly their careers, ambitions and hidden uncertainties tore them apart and they divorced after a short marriage. Their hearts were broken but at the time they thought it was the right decision. Now 8 years later, they discover that they were never divorced!! They are still husband and wife. So now Dylan is back in their small town to make sure that this time they get a divorce. Everything is going according to plan until certain circumstances make them decide to pretend to be still husband and wife. But are they only pretending it or is it real? Will they take a second chance on love, now that they are older and wiser? Or was it never meant to be?
The writer created here a wonderful series that takes place in a charming, Christmas picturesque small town where the residents are curious and like to gossip but they are also there for each other when one of them is in trouble. The story is told in both POV’s. The main characters in this story are Holly’s cousin Everley and her (ex-)husband Dylan Shaw. Everley and Dylan are both awesome characters. You can really feel the love, the chemistry and the respect between them from the beginning but the pain from the past is also present in the background. Throughout the story we get to know them better and learn more about their past. They are really made for each other, where Everley is social, emotional, kind, dramatic and impulsive. Dylan is calm, intelligent, patient and goodhearted. They complement each other very well. Their love is passionate and deep. The story may be a bit emotional but it’s nothing dramatic, it’s perfect for the Christmas season. A great romance story with just the right touch of love, passion, emotions, family loyalty, friendship and Christmas warmth.
In the story we meet the other cousins again. The bond between them is very loving and strong. We meet some familiar and new secondary characters too and one of them has me wondering if maybe he will one day become a main male character too. I will have to wait and see. One of the things that I really like about this series is that although the stories take place during Christmastime, the writer makes it a bit more by giving the small town also a purpose in the summer.
I think it is possible to read this book without reading the first one but I also think that you will understand the background better if you read the first book (and prequel) before this book.
I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
(A little note: If you have read ‘The heartbreak brothers’ series by this writer and loved it, than try this series too. Or if you love this series and want to try another series by this writer, try ‘The heartbreak brothers’ series. For me personally, they have both the same kind of vibe.)
While I did enjoy the story, it was a step down from book 1 in the series. I love the idea of a book series based in a small community, telling the stories of different people. But honestly, getting perspectives of other characters makes me like a few of them a bit less.
FMC is a strong, independent woman. She survived her "divorce" and chose her career over her husband- fair enough, she doesn't have to move across the world so he can do what he wants. I admire her for sticking to her passion. However, as soon as they see each other 8 years later, there's immediate sexual tension and suddenly they want to sleep together again. I get being attracted, but seriously? She then makes the decision to be friends with benefits, saying she won't be heartbroken when he leaves a month later. It's like her whole character flipped- she begins making very stupid decisions. And sure, they fall in love again and he makes the effort to work from Winterville so they can be together. But they fight over the most minor things. I understand she was upset he didn't tell her the divorce went through, but you don't erupt into a screaming match over it- it's so childish.
This book was slow paced for my taste, and while I do like the characters, we don't see heaps of character development. The couple from book 1 are happy and their life is perfect. The couple in this book fight over petty things then are suddenly fine and dandy after they sleep together. It's just a bit shallow. Probably just my worldview/morals affecting how I view the whole thing, but the couple in this book was just sad.
Overall, I did enjoy the read. It wasn't anything super special, but I do enjoy the writing style of the author.
I really didn't like this book. It was boring and way to long-winded. The final argument was about something so minor I couldn't even take it seriously. I have to amit that I didn't read the entire book, skipped multiple chapters and still don't feel like I missed anything important. It really was a shame because the setting of the book really appealed to me.
Dylan and Evelyn were allright as a couple. Didn't really get Dylans reasoning behind the break-up. Evelyn's portrayed as a strong minded woman at first, because she chose het career over a man, even though she loved him. But I don't really like who she is when she's with him.
Also not a fan of the spice. Dylan was getting random boners al over the place and all the memories discussed were about his boners and sex. Seems like a less than ideal relationship to me.
Also, one last pet peeve: the usage of the word ''blink'' (54 times). There are other ways to describes emotions. Example ''She blinked at that thought'', ''Dylan blinked and turned his head''. What does that even mean???
I am completely in love with Carrie Elks Winterville series. With the release of books 1 and 2, the imagery of the Christmas holiday and the spirit of Winterville is forefront. With Welcome To Winterville: A Small Town Holiday Romance, we got a great enemies-to-lovers romance with Holly and Josh. With Hearts in Winter, we witness the second chance love story of Everley and Dylan Shaw.
Years after their divorce and on the heels of cousin Holly Winters' wedding, Everly comes face to face with her "ex-husband", only to find that their divorce papers never made it through the court system. Dylan has returned to Winterville to secure funding for the hospital in Africa that he works for, and to attain his long ago bride's signature for the once thwarted divorce. But both Dylan and Everley find that their connection and chemistry is still very strong. Could they be making the same mistake twice?
This delightful second chance is supported by a cast of family and friends, and a potential new suitor for Everley. This sparks a bit of jealousy that seems to wake up Dylan to the truth of what he feels for his wife. As he persists with his plans to return to Africa, he begins to feel inadequate as a husband and more convinced he can never give her what she needs. This sets off a blizzard of feelings as he waxes and wanes between his desire to try again with Everley, and his desire to focus on work.
Elks creates characters and situations that will tug at your heartstrings. One thing is for sure, this story will bolster tour holiday spirit and belief in well-earned second chances. 5 Stars and recommendation
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
4.5 for Hearts In Winter ( Winterville Book 2) This is the first hook I have read by this author but it certainly won’t be the last. If you love small town romance look no further than this book and for me this read was a win win because Everley and Dylan’s story is set in the holiday season which happens to be my favourite time of the year. Everley Winter can’t believe her ex husband is back in town after leaving 8 years ago but nothing could prepare her for the news that they were still married. To make matters worse she still has an attraction for the man who holds a special piece of her heart, could Dylan feel the same ……. They married young and they both had dreams that took them in different directions so could this second chance be the right time for these soulmates. This book has all the feels, it will tug on your heartstrings, it will make you smile, it has wonderful characters and it’s a sweet, second chance romance that will appeal to a wide range of audiences. Looking forward to my next visit to Winterville and reading more from this very talented author.
Hearts in Winter takes us back to Winterville where every day is like Christmas. Everly has taken over her family theatre and her life is going well, then her ex turns up expectedly and explains that he’s not actually her ex. Everly had loved Dylan with her whole heart, but he chose to leave and follow his calling as a Doctor in Africa, leaving her heartbroken. Eight years later she thinks she’s over him until she spends time with him again when there is a mix up with funding for his work in Africa and she helps him out. Dylan needs to do some soul searching to sort out his emotions, because he really does love Everly. You want to bang their heads together at times, but there are reasons for their moments of doubt. All of the characters from the first book are back which is lovely. I did find Dylan’s quirk a bit strange, but apart from that I really enjoyed, this warm, Christmas, second chance romance.
Everley and Dylan has me guessing what happened all those years ago between them. This story started out really strong but as I read on it kinda lost its shine. Don't get me wrong this was still a great read and all but something happened in between and I can't just put my finger on what it was.
Their past is filled with hurts that neither of them had dealt with appropriately. They both had their heads stuck in the sand for so long that they didn't even realize it. But being together has brought back all the hidden feelings which they couldn't ignore anymore. They still have a few obstacles in the way but feeling as strong as theirs are, nothing but HEA can be the end result.
And now I am excited to see how playboy Gabe meets his match in the next book of this series.

Overall I liked this book. Everly and Dylan were married. However, they find out their divorce never went through. Of course they end up falling in love again. Luckily this time their happy ending sticks.
Took me nearly a month to finish this and I can read books in a day so you could say this wasn't a good one 🫠 almost a dnf but I'm no quitter 😂 will not be reading the rest of the series. I have read other books from this author which I've liked but this series isn't it.
I will admit I am typically very critical about a second chance romance. I need the reason that couple isn't together to make sense. I also need whatever caused their break to be easily resolved without too much drama. All of that said, I went into Hearts in Winter with a skeptical eye. I quickly was invested in the story of Dylan and Everly.
This story had so much tension as these two continued to fight against their attraction and really love they have for each other. For Everly and Dylan they married two young and did not realize you don’t have to give up your dreams to be with each other.
The unexpected emotion of these two and the journey to get to their HEA was beautiful written and captivating. I am also enamored with town of Winterville. If you are a fan of Hallmark Holiday Romances and are looking for a little bit more spice you should give The Town of Winterville a try. This story was 4 Bright shining Christmas Stars!

In ‘Hearts in Winter’ we read the story of Everley and Dylan. Everley and Dylan used to be married. But marrying young didn’t work for them. After one year of marriage, Dylan left and broke Everley’s heart. Now, 8 years later Dylan is back in Winterville and tells Everley that they never got divorced. How could that have happened? And what do they do now? When Everley and Dylan are forced to act like they are a happy married couple things start to become even more complicated.
‘Hearts in Winter’ was from the very first page a book I couldn’t put down. I already loved the small town of Winterville since reading the first book, but through this book I seriously love it even more. The two main characters Everley and Dylan, loved each other intensely years ago. They married young and had this explosive passion between them. But they both wanted very different things from life, and they separated. But they both never really got over each other. And when they meet again after all those years, they realize they still love each other. But nothing has changed. They both have very different lives. So things might end in heartbreak yet again.
Everley and Dylan are definitely my new favorite characters in the Winterville series. Boy did I love them!! The chemistry between them is something you could easily feel flying of the pages. And yes I definitely mean flying!! Their connection is intense and I couldn’t stop reading this book until I read every single page. (Thank you for yet another sleepless night Carrie :’) ) The romance part was just so good. I loved every single page.
My favorite character was definitely Everley. She was very easy to like. Hardworking, passionate and kind. And I loved how she loved Dylan with everything she has. But Dylan’s character was also amazing. Yes, he did have his troubles. But above all he was just a very good guy and I loved how he just wanted to take care of Everley.
The setting of Winterville is definitely one of my favorites. I love romance, and I love Christmas. So a small Christmas-crazy town with some great romance? This series is definitely checking all my boxes and I can’t wait for the next read in this series.
I really liked this winter romance between Dylan and Everly.
Dylan figures out by accident that they are still married after 9 years of thinking that they are divorced. So he returns to Winterville to inform Everly of this. He works as a doctor in Africa and he is also back in America to get an endorsement to open a hospital from a rich couple who helps endorse projects in Africa. He finds out that he by mistake wrote that he is married in his application which he technically still is but is Everly ok by being his wife in front of this couple and other benefactors until they are truly divorced and can their smoldering chemistry keep them from ending in sexy but also though situations? And what happens when they are divorced and he has to leave again?
Everly and Dylan are amazing together unfortunately she was a little to dramatic and they were both to stubborn for my liking. They were also very sweet and you can’t help falling for them as a couple even though they try everything to push each other away. I loved the meddling from several characters in Winterville and I loved the married couple too they were so sweet and happy to have a young couple in their midst. Unfortunately I had a little problem with the ending and it was a little too long for my liking.
I can’t wait until the next romance in the Winterville series. It is a best friends sister and temporary roommate romance between Gabe and Nicole. Love those tropes.
I can definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a very sweet winter/Christmas romance that is reminiscent to a Hallmark movie, a very dramatic but sweet and self sacrificing heroine and a sweet, handsome hero who does what he thinks is best for everybody else but doesn’t think of the consequences of his actions. Great Side characters and an amazing town build up around Christmas. WELCOME TO WINTERVILLE;-)!
This is book two in the Winterville series and is Everley's story. These are sweet, funny romances set in the town of Winterville, where every day is Christmas. I enjoyed this one and loved the push and pull of Everley and Dylan, the angst and making up was addictive and I loved reading this story.
Everely lives in Winterville where she runs the theatre in her families town. Dylan is a doctor and her ex-husband. Well, she thinks he is. That is until he turns up at her cousin's wedding while on leave from his post in Africa where he is a doctor. He then lets drop that this isn't the case and things get interesting. I loved these too but at times I just wanted to slap them and hope they got the hint to talk to each other!
Of course, with the Winterville books, you get a whole host of family members who live and work in the town. It was nice catching up with their lives and seeing new interests develop. It's the sort of story that you know you will be getting to read about the others soon and that's a pleasing thought.
If you are looking for a gentle read, with some heated moments and a Christmas vibe, then this book is the one for you.
Another fantastic addition to a heartwarming sweet as sugar series. This one again gives the reader the feels, the heart aching loss of a first love with characters we’ve got to know in previous books, a lost romance from young love. It’s clear as day these two are still in love, the pretending came easy and they slipped into a routine that came naturally. They both loved each other but married young and both had dreams that didn’t work together, after Dylan gave Everley the ultimatum….. follow me or it’s over, well it was all over. Dylan’s dad didn’t do something he’d promised ( not spoiling lol ) and 8 yrs later they find themselves dealing with the issue again, only with them both still in love with each other things get complicated. Now one of my favourite thinks in this series is seeing all the family characters in each book, it keeps me engaged and North I think is my favourite character, he’s loving caring and super protective. I’m looking forward to his story.
Everley Winter is in for a shock when her ex husband Dylan Shaw shows up after eight years away with news that she does not want to hear. It's her best friends wedding Holly and Josh are setting off for their honeymoon so she wants it kept quiet, the attraction is still there for them both but his job in Africa and hers in Winterville its not a marriage that would ever work all this needs to get sorted as quick as possible, she loves her life where it is always Christmas every day at Winterville can they keep their hands off each other? A delight to read at the seasonal time of the year, sexy, loving, exciting to be enjoyed. I am loving this series will they follow their hearts and make all the wishes come true. loved it.
“Wanna come in and have a cup a coffee?” The lead women said to her male cousin (after thinking how ridiculously attractive he is) (“damn, he was disgustingly good looking, like his brothers. and he knew it” was the exact quote)
“Drinking coffee with a married women after midnight? What would the town have to say about that” The male cousin responds.
Ew ew ew ew ew. Fuck that gross gross.
Idk about you but I don’t want the characters I read about to be joking about that kind of shit. It’s not just me right? That scene and joke were incest vibes and hell to the fucking no
I’ll be honest, I didn’t even try to read past that part because the entire book gave me the ick. Never heard of this author before and I’m sad I know who she is now
Loved this second chance romance. What do you do when the love of your life/ ex-husband comes back into your life after 8 years and tells you you’re still married? Even after all these years of thinking he broke your heart when he left he still makes you tingle... attraction is still there. Worse still... now you’re both playing the happily married couple to secure him a grant for his hospital. This one tugs at the heartstrings. Dylan and Everley are gorgeous together. Wonderfully written with amazing characters. I want to live in Winterville A definite must read
I was given an ARC but voluntarily chose to review
No matter how much time goes by, this will always be one of my favourite books. It’s heartwarming - Dylan and Evie finding their way back to each other 🥰 - and showcasing that love that love is patient, healing, and worth choosing even after loss and heartbreak. Their journey reminds us that true love isn’t about perfection or flawless timing, but about vulnerability, trust, and the courage to open your heart again. Watching them confront their pasts and grow together makes their reunion feel deeply earned, proving that when love is genuine, it endures, warms even the coldest winters, and helps two broken hearts become whole again.
I loved Everly in book 1 of the Winterville stories and I’m so glad she got her happily ever after in this book. Evenly and Dylan’s second chance at love is sweet yet as fiery as their tempers and passion. Everly discovers she and her “ex” husband aren’t actually divorced. They fill out the paperwork and that’s it right? WRONG! Playing pretend with your soon to be ex is bad enough, but falling in love with them all over again in the process is torture. Welcome to love in. Winterville, where the magic of Christmas makes crazy things happen. Like falling for your husband all over again.

Wow! This series gets better with each new book. Everley and Dylan are obviously made for each other and are the kind of characters you fall in love with from the very first page. Their story is emotional without being sappy and feels as warm and genuine as a hug from an old friend. I can’t wait to return to Wintersville!
I’m a sucker for sweet, second chance romance stories. This series is fantastic so far and one I recommend you read. It’s full of so many feelings that will tug at your heart strings and make you not want it to end. Dylan and Everley have that connection you dream of but life and thoughts interrupt. If you want to know what happens, make sure to click this. It’s one not to miss.
