The Family #3

The Enforcer

Rate this book
Zoe

What should you do when your boyfriends try to spring a baby on you? Fight and then leave.
What should you do when the old women in your family want to know why your sister has gone MIA in Italy? Tell them you are not, actually, your sister’s keeper, but then remember that you’re never old enough to talk back.

So that's how I end up in Naples with my cousin Shae, who is acting very strange, a broken heart, and no real plan besides finding my annoying little sister, Zahra.

But then I meet Alfonso.

Alfonso

Being Salvatore's bodyguard is the perfect kind of danger, but the past few months have been a bit much even for me. My partner in literal crime, Giulio, returned from his vacation with Zahra and now the two are nearly inseparable, and the responsibility of keeping everything in order has fallen to me.

But when Zoe bursts into the restaurant (and my life), Salvatore goes rogue, and there's another assassination attempt, everything goes to shit rather quickly, so I go home to Positano to regroup.

While hiding Zoe in my family's hillside home, I have to fight my growing attraction to her while convincing my mother and brothers that this woman I barely know is the love of my life.

I would have preferred a gunshot wound.

I love Katrina Jackson so much and this series is SO GOOD. It's a mafia series, but this one was pretty low stakes when it came to the mafia. Zoe is forced by the matriarchs of her family to take her cousin and hunt down her sister in Italy (cousin is from book .5 in the series and sister is from book 1). They go and find her sister, but they also find the men both her cousin and sister have fallen for. Plus Alfonso, who works with those men. And they're in the mafia. Someone bad is after them, so the women all split up with their respective partners, which means Zoe is stuck with Alfonso. Alfonso takes her home to where he grew up and they slowly fall for each other. They are absolutely attracted to each other, but Zoe is getting over a breakup that had to do with her not wanting kids. I loved Zoe and how fun and independent she was. She is nursing a broken heart, but she doesn't need anyone to make her happy or feel like her life is fulfilled. It was fun watching her interact with Alfonso's family and understand what kind of work Alfonso is a part of. They spend most of the novel hiding out and I just really loved the Italian setting. This whole series is just a fun time and I cannot wait to read the next book!

This is definitely one of my favorite mafia series. It’s not nearly as dark as a lot of them tend to be, the humor, the steam, I love it so much.

Full disclosure I've been waiting for this book for what seems like FOREVER (I'm being dramatic). I was able to get early access to this book for being a Patreon and let me tell you I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. Also, if you follow me on social media you know I'm a Katrina Jackson fangirl and did some teasers for The Enforcer BUT I keep it honest. I like what I like and LOOOOVEEED The Enforcer and here's why:

1. The pacing pulls you in from jump
2. The range of emotions (one minute we are laughing, next minute someone is getting shot at, the next minute we are in the middle of an orgasm) ma'am we got it all
3. The world is expanding and we get to see so many layers that might have been implied before but get some details
4. I felt transported to Positano, Italy. I could almost taste the salt air and how freaking hot it was
5. Family

Now, I do think you have to suspend some believe and Katrina was a bit cheeky about how in the world these 3 women (2 sisters and a cousin) meet and fall for the same men in this organization. Just go with it. How can these 3 men run such a powerful org (you get some answers in the companion novella Dolci so read it). How much stuff did Shae and Zoe pack for this trip. Girl they didn't take carryon. And last thing you have to be open to not having ALL your questions answered. Just move past it friends because what we have so far is just chef's kiss.

So some more reasons I loved this book and officially my favorite book in the series-the banter between the women, the council of aunties, and even between Zoe and Alfonso was beyond stellar. There were so many quality moments of dang the shade or get it together. YESSSS!

I love that Zoe is more than what she seems on page. She's an older sister, who has always been the family fixer, and often times have to put her feelings aside to care for others. Zoe is pure Virgo energy!!! She's direct, asks for what she wants, but also makes sure Shae and Zahara are good. I love her and want to be her friend. She also takes up space and does not apologize for it. She doesn't shrink not one time like yes I know society might think I should make myself small as a plus size Black woman but I will not. Last observation (not really) the subtle way Zoe talks about her anxiety is easily mixed. There are moments where she describes always having to take things in, be calm, or not freak out. Essentially there's whole lot of emotional management done in her head and how control might be a valuable coping mechanism. There are some other examples but I don't want to spoil it. She is also grieving what she thought her future would look like but coming to terms it will not be that. I felt her disappointment but also was rooting for her to pivot. And what a better place to do in Italy with a man who literally uses his body to stop people.

Alfonso (new book bae) now talk about peeling back the onion. Similarly to Zoe, Alfonso is more than what it seems. He is grappling with something I think we don't always get to unpack with male main characters- specifically confronting the image people created who they THINK you are. He was told from young he's a bad kid because he liked to fight so that became his profession. But was it true or was there something else? Read the book to find out. What I will say is when given the space and language he shows up different. And to support my argument he has 3 brothers that all bring out different sides of him. There were tender moments because he cares about what they think. Ugh his mother was the sweetest and also very funny. Alfonso is a pleaser in every sense of the word and that man cannot get enough of Zoe.

Friends the way they pleasure each other CREATIVE at best.

All in all LOOOOOVVVVEEEE this installment. I still have questions but we get another novella and the Don. Girlies I cannot wait.

CW/N: voyeurism, killing and torture on page, fights, shake down/black mail, gun violence, pain kink (blood drawn and scars from the play), family guilt, assassination attempt

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?

Katrina play too much. How am I supposed to read another romance by another author again?

I went into this knowing that it would be great BUT HOT DAMN! 🥵🥵🥵

From past books in the series, I wasn't fond of Alfonso so I went into with a hesitation. Zoe quickly won me over. I instantly connected with her—her humor, forwardness, love for the women in her family, her voracious sexual appetite. Alfonso was slower for me to come around to but by the end of the first third, I knew I would pull a gun on someone for him and would pull the trigger for them both.

I cannot stress how fantastic this romance is. Jackson has once again got me to see an aspect of romantic/sexual relationships in a new manner, and isn't that what great fiction does? Teach you someone new or show you something you thought you understood only to be shown how little you really know?

I hope Katrina Jackson keeps this series going for a while because I am eating it up! Her brand of Italian mafia just plain works for me. I absolutely loved The Hitman and The Enforcer gave it a run for its money. Zoe is highly skeptical that both her cousin and sister randomly fell for these mafia men and she’s sure it’s not going to happen to her. But when they all need to split up for safety, Alfonso takes her to his family and we all know what happens when that kind of forced proximity comes into the picture. Alfonso is a henchman who is good at doing what he’s told…I did not expect that to also apply to the bedroom and I was very much here for it. It was HOT. Zoe is a force to be reckoned with and I loved seeing her rise to every occasion. I loved that they are both adamant about not wanting to have children. This story takes place over a short period of time and it ends with an HFN, one that made perfect sense to me. Alfonso is completely gone for Zoe, as well he should be, but she needs more time to figure out her feelings for him. It ends on a hopeful note for them and a cliffhanger setup for next book. Maybe we’re finally going to circle back around to Shae and Sal?? I sure hope so.

Characters: Zoe is a fat polyamorous Black journalist. Alfonso is a fat white Italian bodyguard/mafioso. This is set in Positano and Naples, Italy.

Content notes: murder, violence, physical fights, assassination attempt on secondary character, pregnant secondary character, blind secondary character, masturbation, mutual masturbation, on page sex, D/s, pain play, exhibitionism, public sex, alcohol, gendered insults, ableist language

This one was interesting. Zoe is a character and I mean that in the best way, I loved her! She is blunt to a fault, a good thing if you want to know what she is thinking, a bad thing if what she is thinking doesn't match up to what you want.

I really liked how Alfonso seemed a bit dumbstruck by her. He was attracted to her, but it was more. He kept flipping her shit and she kept flipping him shit right back, which seemed to throw him off at first, later it seemed to be a bit of fore play for them.

I was surprised by how much Zoe rolled with things, learning about Shae's surprise, finding out about Zahra's Italian lover and all the things that happened with Alfonso, from the steps, to his family, to having to sudden leave.

The one bad thing I can say about the whole book is how it ended, a damn cliff hanger and a doozy at that. I hope the next book comes soon!

I am OBSESSED with this series. Truly. It is hot and steamy and bananas. Alfonso was such a precious bean. I loved getting to hang out in the Italian countryside with these two. I am normally not into mob /mafia type romances but this series is the exception. It is magical and ridiculous and absolute perfection.

I looooved! Zoe was so stubborn and being fresh off a breakup and always pushing against people’s expectations, it makes sense, but who would’ve thought that 200+ stairs, good Italian food and a teddy bear who enjoys pain would be the answer to her non-prayers? Zoe was right about whatever they’re putting in the water over there in Naples

#1 beautiful & dirty ★★★☆☆
#2 the hitman ★★★★★
#3 the enforcer ★★★★☆
#4 dolci ★★★★☆
#5 the don ★★★★☆

i really enjoyed the beginning (the drama of it all!!!) but i didn’t love this one as much as the previous one

content/trigger warnings; violence, blood, murder, ableism, explicit sexual content, pregnancy mentioned, alcohol consumption,

rep; zoe (mc) is fat, black, and polyamorous. alfonso (mc) is fat.

i guess my main issue is that i kind of feel like this series is the same story/relationship slightly tweaked a bit each time. the characters are distinct, but the plot and relationship developments are a bit too similar.

Another cliffhanger but oh so good

I read/finished this series a couple years ago but forgot to complete the review. So, I had to reread it in order to write it and fell in love all over again. It’s got intrigue, so much drama, family craziness. It was damn near perfect.
Zoe is sent to Italy to bring back her younger sister, Zahra (book 2). She’s going with her cousin, Shea (book 1) who is acting weird for unknown reasons and they’re trying to retrace Zahra’s location in Italy. Well, if you read the first 2 books, things got real when they ended back at the small pizza shop in Naples from book 1 and that’s when things get fun!
Alfonso is the muscle. He’s fine with that because it’s what he’s good at. He has a great relationship with his boss and “co-worker” and is always ready. What he’s not ready for is for a beautiful, black woman to come bursting through the door, his boss reaching immediately, an assassination attempt and an impromptu family reunion. But, based on circumstances, they need to spilt up and Zoe, who he is immediately attracted to, is his to watch over. And that means leaving Naples and heading to his home town of Positano.
We get to learn more of the dynamics between Alfonso and his family. We witness Zoe trying to follow full conversations in Italian. But, more importantly we see 2 hard headed people come to grips that they just might be the right people for each other. Zoe is a big, black and beautiful woman, talented, highly opinionated and loves herself first. Alfonso is a big guy who knows how to fight, is uncertain there more to him than that and gets off on a bit of pain. Weirdly enough, they bring out the best in each other.
I especially enjoyed how the author described their body’s. These are not tiny people. They are big people with bellies and thighs and high sex drives. Their sexy sexy times were beautiful intimate and explicit. There’s nothing better than a person who is confident in their skin.
As I said, all of these books end in cliffhangers (so far), so I’m off to reread the next one.

This is the 3rd installment in The Family series. Zoe and her cousin Shae are being sent across the ocean to Naples, Italy, by the Council of Aunties to bring back Zoe’s sister, Zahra. Zoe is processing her *very* recent breakup with her boyfriends, and Shae is in the process of leaving the apartment she shared with her ex-boyfriend to move in with Shae. Is the timing the worst, or perfect? Before she can adjust to the time zone, Zoe finds herself embroiled in what seems to be a mafia war, being protected by 3 men, two of which her sisters seem to know *very* well. In an order to keep everyone safe, the three men split up and each take one of the women with them. Now Zoe is staying on the side of a mountain in a small Italian village with a man she barely knows, who has told his family she’s his fiancée so there won’t be questions. Will she be able to get her sister home safely? Will she be able to resist the attraction to Italian men with sketchy ties that her family seems to have?

Each time I read a book by Katrina Jackson I am reminded of how much I love her writing and how it pulls me into the world of the book. This book was no exception. I loved the all of the characters, Zoe and her family, Alfonso and his. The side characters rounded out the story, and it was amazing how well you got to know them even if they were only featured for short periods of time. I love how Zoe knows who she is and what she wants and never hesitates to tell people. Alfonso is the kind of guy that on paper I fall head over heels for even though I know in reality he’s just a giant red flag. What can I say, his dangerous demeanor is more than appealing. This is a mafia romance, so be sure to check the CWs. I would recommend this to fans of mafia, bodyguard, and dark romance, as well as anyone looking to diversify their reading.

This one didn't really jive for me

🌹 The MMC felt bland and one-note. While he had somewhat of a "jock" charm to him (no, if he's a mafia man who kills people I refuse to call him a himbo). However, I kept wanting more from his character besides "likes fighting and FMC". I liked the little we got from his family, and the conflict he had with himself from their expectations

🌹 The FMC felt like a prop or caricature used to convey a message, rather than an actual character/person. The annoying thing is, that I agree with the messages. They just felt unfitting in the moments used and for the type of relation we're trying to build in a romance. She felt callous and mean rather than strong.

🌹 I didn't like that the FMC legit didn't know how to cook. That's just a basical life skill, girl. I do not think she should be forced to be the cook or to perform that task while with his family. But not knowing how to cook at all and being proud of it??? Nah, everyone should know that

🌹 The femdom was okay. I got a bit bored with the sex scenes because I felt so little connection between the characters

🌹 The emotional ending for me didn't work:
That is a stone-cold bummer. Realistic, but what a bummer. I like the emotional highs and intensity in romance, and this was definitely not that.

Zoe is sent with her cousin Shae to bring Zahra back from Italy after she has not made contact with anyone in their family. From there, everything goes off the rails. Zahra doesn't want to come home, Shae runs into her baby daddy, and Zoe is stuck in the middle. They decide to all split up after an attempt on the life of Shae's baby daddy (also the head of the mafia). Zoe gets stuck with Alfonso and they end up getting together. This book was okay just like the rest of the series. There is nothing particularly exciting about these books but they are enjoyable.

This book also ends on a cliffhanger, much like the other books. Technically the romance is not truly complete for this book or any book. However, it seems that all of our couples are happily together (or at least happy and together enough for me) that I think I am going to stop reading this series at this point. Right now I am happy with the romances and I am not particularly interested in going more in depth. I find that sometimes when authors revisit a relationship in a future book, there are subtle changes to the characters that I don't enjoy or events occur within the relationship that I do not like. For this reason, I am content to leave this series as is for now.

3.5 stars. Something was missing in this for me. Maybe I just really didn’t relate to the FMC. I think I started off annoyed because at the start of the book it felt like they made the fat FMC do all these things like constantly complain about exercise and always eating. I think maybe the book was mostly doing pretty positive fat representation, but at the beginning my hackles were up. Then it felt a little like the FMC was emotionally kind of a bit stunted. Not in a relatable way, but in a way where she’s so about self-care and thinking she’s amazing that she doesn’t think about others. It was just in little ways, and once again, by the end of the book it was a little better. But I spent most of the book feeling a bit not into it. I did love that this woman was very forthright and knew her boundaries, but I got a little exhausted by how in live with herself she was. And that’s probs not fair, but it’s just so the opposite of my own life experiences that it was hard. I dunno. I both loved it, and was exhausted by it. Haha.

CW: violence

This was a fast-paced continuation of The Hitman (The Family, #2) by Katrina Jackson . Zoe and Shae are sent to Italy by the Council of Aunties to find Zahra, Zoe's sister and Shae's cousin. They stumble on Shae's one-day stand and into Salvo's troubles. Zahra shows up and Salvo declares that they have to separate to avoid whoever is trying to kill them while they figure out who that is. Zoe is sent off with Alfonso, who takes them to his family home on an island. Zoe is fresh off a break-up and has a lot of emotions to come to terms with as well as jet lag. Alfonso and Zoe lust after each other and start to see things they like about each other than their figures. I do like how they are becoming soft for each other. This is definitely an HFN rather than a HEA, plus it ends on a cliffhanger.

AUTHOR HAS SUPPLIED CONTENT WARNINGS!

FAKE! *wheeze* DATING!!!!!!!!!!!!

I.... I am in love with Ugo and only Ugo (I see you Nicola, but Ugo has too much of my heart). Someone send help. I can't stop thinking about how soft this man is, tending to his garden, taking walks instead of driving, just generally being a gentle giant. And knowing how everyone else is, I can imagine what he can unleash when pushed and just.... Yum, David!

I should be concentrating on Alfonso and Zoe, but my ass was completely, one hundred per cent taken by Ugo and his soft ass. And Lord, Lord send me an Ugo please, I promise I'll be good to him 🥺🥺. I'll even take up gardening, Lord, I'll even sometimes play dutiful housepersonthingy and cook and clean (👀☠️). I'll treat him right, promise, promise.

Ugoooooooooo!

I loved The Hitman, so this was a huge disappointment. When I saw that Mina Reads gave it two stars I was shocked. But now I see why.

I didn't see the attraction between the two, I didn't believe the relationship. I didn't find either character interesting or compelling, or believable. The s*x was meh. sigh.

I'll read the third book, at some point, because for some reason I find Shae and Sal so compelling based on their novella Beautiful & Dirty

Totally Worth It

The writer gives us such a funny, sexy sweet story that's filled with mystery and a whole lot of sizzle. We get to come full circle with the ladies and the men that they fall in love with, not to mention that love is so so complicated. This is very good writing that moves at pace that feels like you not only know these characters but you see it in folding. This story ends on a cliffhanger but you kinda want this because you so want more of these really great characters.

I wish I could give 10 ⭐️

Okay let me say that I am IN LOVE WITH THIS SERIES!!!! I wanted to rate book one, but was too excited to get to book two, then equally as excited to get to book three. I am about to start book four, but felt the need to express to Ms. Jackson that she's an AMAZING writer. I love all of the characters...the settings...the plot of the story. Girl you have officially made it to my top five FAVS.

Romance with some action!

I was hoping that book two would bring a conclusion to the Zoe, Zahra and Shae's Italian adventure. Although I am enjoying the story, I am hoping this ends with book three and that book three offers more action. I understand the need to tell each man's story, but I want book three to be action packed and worth the wait. An enjoyable read.

Loved The Enforcer! I've really been enjoying this series and was excited to read the newest book. It's sexy, escapist, has oldest sibling vibes--as an oldest, this was so relatable--and then it hits you with themes of finding and being yourself with family. Highly recommend.

I'm friendly with the author on social media but I purchased this book and this review reflects my honest opinion.

Enjoyed this one from start to finish. Zoe and Alfonso were great! and so so steamy together.

I loved the Council of Aunties...Zoe, Shae and Zahra together and Zoe interacting with Alfonso's family. Made me really want to visit Italy some day. It's on my list!

However...that ending had me screaming but ahhhh cliffhanger and we have to wait for the next book I WANT IT NOWWWW!

So happy to have found the follow up books of that series. Loved this one! Zoe was great. I liked how she acted and the dynamics of her relationship with Alfonso which was refreshingly different from the usual, without making any of them any less interesting. Got very interested with K and T. Hope they find the on who will match with them ! Great writing ! Can't wait to read the next book.

Alfonso and Zoe had an attraction surrounded in control and lost. Who knew the brooding giant had pain kink. A kink that Zoe was all to happy to indulge in. Can't wait for the next book!
