The Hunted by Lisa Childs brings plenty of mystery, violence, and secrets to the second book of the Bane Island mystery series. It’s set on an island off the coast of Maine during winter and picks up soon after the end of book one. It features Olivia Smith and Sheriff Deacon Howell.

Olivia travels to Halcyon Hall on the island, desperate to get away from the pressures of her singing and songwriting career as well as a stalker. Halcyon Hall is an exclusive spa and treatment center that caters to the wealthy and celebrities. Deacon found his first body there when the hall was closed down and still known as Bainesworth Manor. But that was 25 years ago. Since then, he has found more bodies there, include that of this wife two years ago. Now another body has been found. As Deacon tries to investigate that death and works to protect Olivia from her stalker, more evil arises.

Olivia is independent, well respected in her career, and has plenty of secrets. She has turned her bad childhood situation into an inspiration for others. Readers also get a lot of insight into Deacon’s relationship with his teenage daughter, Holly. The secondary characters play pivotal roles in the story. Some are supportive and some provide conflict. But who can be trusted? Who will survive?

The prologue will capture a reader’s attention, but it isn’t quite as strong as that in book one. Similar to book one, readers get glimpses of the antagonist. But who is it and what is their motivation? The world-building was perfect for this novel with cold, wind, snow, and treacherous roads. The plot is intriguing and gripping. The story has several twists and turns and plenty of action. However, there are also emotional and heart-wrenching scenes as well as some romance. A volatile climax leads to a satisfying ending. Readers can also derive the thread that will lead to book three. The book definitely held my interest and kept me engaged. Themes include murder, relationships, family, romance, physical abuse, trust, misunderstandings, secrets, and much more.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, which was suspenseful and entertaining, and has plenty of action and drama. I found the writing style relatable, vivid, and irresistible. I am eager to find out what happens during the next book in the trilogy. I recommend this to those that like romantic suspense and crime thrillers. This series is best if read in order. There is background information in book one that will enhance the reading of the second novel.

"The Hunted" has a really great plot, but I absolutely hate the way is is being executed. This is like a train wreck or a NASCAR race, you just can't look away. I've rolled my eyes so much I'm surprised they haven't gotten stuck in my head. I don't like anyone in this book, but I keep reading when I probably should DNF it. It all goes back to a very good plot, the baddie is well hidden, his motive not readily seen and there just could be more than one. I do love a mystery.

A Pop Singer, AKAN (also known as nobody) aka Olivia Smith, has taken shelter on Bane Island off the coast of Maine in an exclusive and guarded spa and treatment center now known as Halcyon Hall. She is hiding from the press and an obsessive stalker who has made numerous threats for several months. Of course, she hasn't reported this to the police. Exhausted from the mental anguish, she just ran. Only the place she ended up in is no refuge for any young woman as they tend to end up dead. That's a dirty little fact the owners want covered up.

Sheriff Deacon Howell has his own problems. Even as a child he found a dead woman in what is now Halcyon Hall, but in his youth it was a pile of ruins known as Bainsworth Manor, an asylum where parents sent their troubled daughters and some didn't return. Deacon has also discovered two dead women since becoming the Sheriff, one of which was his wife. Now someone is trying very hard to kill him also.

As Olivia and Deacon explore the passion that flares between them, the killer, or is it the stalker, ramps up the threats and attempts on their lives. Will they catch a killer and expose a stalker, or will they end up as two more dead bodies connected to Bainsworth Manor?

When I read the blurb for this book I thought I would be reading a psychological thriller with a smattering of a love story in it. In actuality, this is a romance novel with a smattering of mystery in it. If you enjoy a traditional romance novel this would likely be a 3-4 star read for you. I gave it 2.5 -3 stars because the combination of genres is just not for me.

This is the 2nd book in the Bane Island trilogy, and I did not have the opportunity to read the first book. That lead to the first couple chapters being a bit of an information dump for me; it took awhile for me to sort out who was who and what was going on. However, Childs does a good job of filling in the gaps and I did find the cast of characters intriguing and likable.

It is set on a semi-isolated island and the majority of the story takes place in a renovated psychiatric hospital (Bainesworth Manor) with a dark and mysterious past. The re-branded Halcyon Hall is now an exclusive spa/rehab centre with a very famous guest (Olivia Smith) who seems to be running from a stalker. Sheriff Deacon Howell crosses paths with Olivia while trying to solve some of the lingering mysteries from Book 1 (The Runaway). Sparks fly between the two and suspense ensues as they work to unravel several conflicts.

The trilogy seems to have an overarching narrative that is not solved in book 1 or 2, but each book has their own individual story lines that do reach a resolution. I didn’t find the ending to be earth shattering, but I also had to read to it all to figure out whodunit! The issue for me lie in the cliche love scenes, and I confess, I skipped through a lot of them because they made me cringe; however, I think there is a large audience for this type of writing, and many readers will enjoy the romantic portions of the book.

In short, if you enjoy the traditional romance genre and also love a bit of a mystery, this book is for you. If you tend towards more dark thrillers (i.e. Gone Girl, The Push, etc.) you might want to skip this one. I might read the third novel (if my library carries it) just to find out what the overarching mystery is really about!

⭐⭐

I really wanted to like this one more than I did. The synopsis sounded all kinds of intriguing. However, the book did not live up to that promise. The main sticking point for me was that this story was way more romance than mystery. Nothing in the blurb indicates this, and romance just isn't a genre I have an interest in reading at the moment. 🤷🏻‍♀️ On the positive side, I really loved the setting. Who doesn't love the backdrop of a spooky former asylum?!

The Hunted by Lisa Childs is book two in a trilogy. At the time I requested the book I did not know this, so highly recommend that you read book one first so not left lost. I was expecting more of a thriller but this was more romantic suspense in nature.

*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book in return for a honest review.*

The atmosphere of this book was everything you want from a secluded former asylum owned by a questionable family that is known to be notoriously cruel and full of secrets. It was easy to picture the dark and mysterious island that holds secrets with more questions than answers.

Deacon is the sherif of the island that is determined to solve the murders of women on the island and has always disliked the Cooke family since childhood. Dr. Elijah Cooke just wants to be left alone to run his health spa that was once the home of an asylum. Neither of then men like to be in each other's presence, but somehow they always seem to run into each other. The tension and banter between them was realistic and sometimes humorous.

Deacon's daughter Holly is your typical teenager that hates the world, but she has good reasons. Her mother ended up dead on the island while visiting the health spa, and though the death was ruled a suicide, Deacon and Holly both have always questioned that decision. Holly is able to meet her idol, Olivia, who is at the health spa running from her problems and past.

Of course, Deacon and Olivia have an instant attraction in the mist of all of the things going on on at the health spa and surrounding island, and Deacon constantly almost dying.

While I thought this book had a good mystery and quite a bit of action, I didn't really enjoy the overall love interest. I'm usually a sucker for romance in any of the books I read, but I felt like this time it took away from the actual mystery of the book. I really wanted more of the Cooke's family secrets and less of the constant running away of problems.

The second book in the Bane Island series is just as good if not better than the first one. It can be read as a standalone, with new characters being introduced and former characters from the first book continuing in the series. The Cook family is crazy or evil, running an asylum named Halcyon Hall on an island in Maine. But they aren’t the only ones suffering from delusions, so the stage is set for a lot of mystery and suspense as well as plenty of romance. I enjoyed learning more about the characters, especially the Sheriff who earned my sympathy due to the untimely death of his wife and his rebellious teen daughter. One of the new characters in this book is Olivia Smith, an entertainer who is being stalked and threatened and chooses to hide out at Halcyon Hall. In my mind, that alone made her nuts, but the story revolved around her, so her stay there was a necessity. As the story progressed, there were plenty of twists and red herrings, but what I liked the most is that I just didn’t know who could be trusted. The truth was there, well hidden with plenty of foreshadowing and clues. If you want to read a book that is set in a creepy place with equally creepy characters and a few normal people, then this book is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn’t want it to end. Some surprises along the way and at the end were welcome additions to my reading pleasure!

The Hunted • Lisa Childs

This is the second book in a series, I found this out after starting this book.
I definitely would recommend reading the first book if you wish to read it.
Overall this book was ok. I was very lost starting and through a lot of it. I almost didn’t finish it, as I felt like there was so much going on. 80% in I finally got into the book but it was a little too late.

I did however enjoy that every couple chapters we would have the view from the killer for a brief period.

I haven't read The Runaway, book 1 in the Bane Island Trilogy, but that didn't keep me from enjoying The Hunted. There are secrets, evil, and danger at Halcyon Hall in Maine. Deacon Howell and Elijah Cooke have known each other since they were boys. Now Deacon is a sheriff and Elijah is the director of Halcyon Hall. Recently Deacon found a dead body at the hall. While asking questions, he met Olivia Smith there. She has been staying there to avoid a stalker. Deacon is determined to solve the mystery of the murder and discover who is stalking Olivia. This is a romantic suspense book. It is filled with interesting characters and twists and turns. I found it very entertaining and now I want to read the other two books in the series.

I didn't connect to the protagonists of book 2 (The Hunted) quite as much as the ones in book 1 (The Runaway). The romance came on a bit too quick and felt only skin deep, but the mystery kept me flipping pages. Once again the main mystery is resolved, and I walked away with more answers to the overarching questions, but there are still more that have me rushing to dive into book 3 (The Missing).

IT WAS INTERESTING UP TO ALMOST HALFWAY THEN IT GOT KINDA' SILLY & CORNY THEN FELL APART. THE CHARACTERS DIDN'T SEEM REAL AND THEY WERE DISCONNECTED SOMETIMES THEY JUST DIDN'T INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER. LIKE A BAD MOVIE WITH A TERRIBLE SCRIPT, CONFUSING AND A DRAGGING OUT WRITING STYLE. SMH! ;<

Sheriff Deacon Howell holds a deep hatred for Halcyon Hall, a former asylum known as Bainesworth Manor turned health spa. When the place claims another victim, he intends to catch the murderer. However, someone does not want Deacon to expose Bainesworth Manor’s oldest and darkest secrets. He never expected to be fascinated with one of its residents, a woman with her own deadly secrets. Can Deacon find the murderer before they kill again? Or will he lose more to Bainesworth Manor?
Olivia Smith is a famous pop star. She checks into an exclusive spa in Maine to escape her stalker. Olivia soon learns about the place’s horrific past. During her stay, she finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation. Olivia trusts no one, especially not the handsome sheriff on the case. When her stalker strikes again, she wants to run but impassable roads keep her at the resort. Will Olivia become another victim of Bainesworth Manor? Can she learn to trust Deacon?
Deacon is a man haunted by his entangled past with Bainesworth Manor. The place has always been his greatest downfall. I empathize with Deacon over his rocky relationship with his teen daughter. He truly cares for Holly and her wellbeing; he just does not know how to communicate with her. What I admire the most about Deacon is his integrity. He refuses to follow in his father’s corrupt footsteps. Instead, Deacon intends to bring all the past wrongs to light at great risks to his life.
Olivia is an inspiration for women and mistreated teens. She is a woman who has survived an abusive and neglected childhood. I admire how Olivia used music as an outlet to purge herself of the toxicity from those experiences. She could have bottled up all that negativity until it corrupted her soul. What I like the most about Olivia is her ability to recognize other tormented souls. She understood the turmoil and pain Deacon and Holly were experiencing. Olivia may not have set out to help father and daughter, but she did help the two to bridge the gap between them.
THE HUNTED is book two in Lisa Childs’ romantic suspense series, BANE ISLAND TRILOGY. I have not read the first book, so there were instances when I felt that I missed some vital information. However, it did not hinder my ability to follow the story’s plot. I wish the author would have stuck with just the hero, the heroine, and the villains’ point-of-view. The others seemed to boggle down the story’s pacing.
THE HUNTED is a thrilling tale of two people learning to accept their shortcomings during a terrible time. I hope the next book is about Edie and Elijah. I cannot wait to learn the rest of Bainesworth Manor’s lethal secrets.

I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the first book in the series as the story continues in this one. Sheriff Deacon returns home to the island after his father becomes unwell, but things to not go well for him. His wife apparently commits suicide and his daughter blames him. Olivia is running from the stress of her success and a stalker and lands herself in the middle of more trouble at Halcyon Hall. Deacon is trying to solve the murder of a body found in the first book and someone doesn’t like it and tries to kill him. During the investigation Deacon and Olivia get close but because of their pasts neither of them are very trusting and misunderstandings get in their way. I found this book a little depressing as everyone seemed to have had some sort of trauma in their lives. I liked the setting and the characters and I know this is a romantic suspense book but I would have liked a little relief from the drama. The story is not fully resolved and expect another story with Elijah & Edie as the main characters which I would like to read as I want to know how everything works out.

The setting for this series has a lot of potential: a former sanitarium/asylum (where nefarious things happened) converted to a fancy, private, exclusive health spa and resort run by the same sinister family that operated the asylum. The isolation (we're on an island) is palpable, the hold this place has over the rest of town eerily strong. So this book should be really creepy. It's not. There are hints of a creep factor (like the guest who hears the dead) with a whole lot of romance. Love develops very quickly and very passionately on Bane Island!

There is resolution to some of the big mysteries left hanging from The Runaway (book #1 in the series). While many chapters end in cliff hangers, The Hunted has a greater sense of closure while leaving plenty of fodder to fill up the series finale. These are quick, easy reads. I'll tune in to find out how it all ends, keeping my fingers crossed for more creep.

I was hoping for something more thriller and mystery with a little romance. Instead it was a whole lot of romance with a little bit of mystery. The author doesn't do the best job blending the first book information into the second book instead she gives it to you all at once which can be distracting and take readers out of the story. The author created the series so that one book follows the next making sure readers need to read the last book to discover all the answers.

Confession I skipped all the love scenes to get to the meat of the story.

2.75 Hearts So the first book in the series was really dark. This one was a bit more of a romance but still had a bit of violence that was too much for me.

I am just not that thrilled with this trilogy but now that I have read the other two I will probably pick up number three from NetGalley.

I would suggest reading book one before reading book two. There is some background from book one that helps in book two. Yes, it does sum it up a bit but not as much as if you read book one.

If I had read the first book then I think I would have liked this one more. It wasn't bad, but the beginning had me confused and hindered my progress. Some of the dialogue was off for me, and felt unnatural. This is more of a romance with mystery and suspense added in. The last half of the book was my favorite. I enjoyed the atmosphere and some of the characters were more interesting than others. The ending definitely has me interested in checking out the third book in the trilogy.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books/Zebra for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the 2nd book in a series, but I think they need to be read in order. I have not read the first and I was sort of lost. The plot seemed really convoluted-but I think if you read the first it would make more sense. This was just an ok read for me. I struggled to get through it. 3 stars It would probably be higher if I read the first one.

A little bit of mystery and a little bit of romance is what you will get reading The Hunted. Throw in some suspense and lots of drama to round the story out.
Lots of dead bodies being found around the asylum.
Lots of attempted murders.
You will be kept in suspense and guessing until the end.
It was a ok read for me….not great but ok.

If I could give it 3.5 stars I would. Overall read was good. Storyline was kind of all over the place. Too many characters introduced at once. Alive and dead including. Very drawn out on the explanations. This is a sequel and quite possibly trilogy in it's near future. Wasn't the best book but it was still good read.

No właśnie.

Gdyby wyciąć co drugi opis lasu, morskiej bryzy i architektury Halcyon Hall, książka byłaby o połowę krótsza i o wiele bardziej dynamiczna.

A przecież thrillery żyją z finału!

Confession time dear friends, a book that I requested in Net Galley, purely for its cover image. Well, nothing new, anything like an eerie mansion, and I will surely be reeled in like a cat to fish. This is book #2 in the Bane Island Trilogy that I strongly recommend reading in order to understand the mysteries expertly interwoven thru the story.

Each book has a different couple in focus but the central mystery that haunts Bainesworth Manor is spread across the 3 books. I had no problems in following the story in this coz the author has mentioned the required details to understand the plot but as a trilogy, I think it is best read in order of the series.

The story begins with Sherriff Deacon Howell returning to the hall with a warrant to talk to its residents about their knowledge of a body discovered in the woods. His initial meeting with Olivia Smith sets the sparks as his daughter Holly inadvertently creates a misunderstanding between them. Deacon believes the manor house to be cursed and his wife’s death in the same place hasn’t helped matters with gossip abound of his hands in her death.

Multiple plotlines are running in the story, of course, the main mystery of the tragedy that has been forced upon the residents of the place when it was an asylum is kept hovering on the top but running in parallel to it is the murder attempts on Deacon, the stalker behind Olivia, the teenage angst of Holly who is hell-bent on being a spoilt brat and not listening to her father culminating in an action-packed climax with kidnapping added to the mix. The romance between Olivia and Deacon was exciting what with the bang-bang action happening around them adding to the thrill.

The brittle cold weather enhances the atmosphere with escape routes being cut off and the author uses this to create a gripping and entertaining thriller with equal parts action and romance. There are enough twists in the story that keeps the reader engaged and the highlight of the novel for me would be the sisters Evelyn and Bonita who run the boarding house in town. I loved Evelyn’s banter with the reporter Edie which indicates the thread of book #3 and I can’t wait to untangle the mystery hidden in the Bainesworth Manor.

Thoroughly engrossing, The Hunted would be perfect for fans of romantic suspense.

Many thanks to Net Galley, Kensington Books, Zebra, and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.

„Jak długo będzie tu bezpieczna? Ile potrwa, zanim prasa ją znajdzie? Albo – co gorsza – zanim on ją znajdzie?”

„Ścigana” to thriller z elementami romansu, osadzony w klimatycznym, odizolowanym miejscu z mroczną historią.

🔥🔥🔥RECENZJA 🔥🔥🔥

Dzień dobry Kochani. Zapraszam Was dzisiaj na moją recenzję na temat książki @lisa_childs_author pt. ,,Ścigana". Książkę tą miałam przyjemność przeczytać dzięki #współpracabarterowa z wydawnictwem @skarpawarszawska.

Olivia Smith to słynna i rozpoznawalna gwiazda pop.

Sceneria idealna do napisania wciągającego thrillera.
