If this book had been called. A dysfunctional family it would have been a much more accurate title than extinct
In the opening chapter, we meet Emily, a science teacher and shes well created, we get an immediate sense of who she is. We meet her daughter Anna, a girl who seems smart and lives as an insulin type 1 diabetic.
Then we meet Travis, a cop and Emily’s boyfriend, Kyle ( her ex) and a few other people.

Then, the birds drop from the sky and the world turns upside down. For about 2 pages

Cars crash and Emily is hurt, then while trapped in her car, she sees her daughter being abducted

Then Anna is kidnapped and a chapter or so later, fish die. Of course fishermen are dragging them out all over the place along with dolphins and whales. That lasts for a paragraph or two.

Back to kidnapped Anna and mom Emily who have found a way to communicate

Now more and more people are brought into a convoluted story of kidnapping. Non of who actually advanced the story, but do fill a lot of pages with the stupid kidnapping story line.

Then a paragraph because, all the cows died. “This could be bad”

More dysfunctional family/ kidnapping stuff.

Then one line..

“All the animals died”

After the birds dying, there is less than a page relating to animals dying. Why call the book Extinct?

SPOILER ALERT..STOP READING HERE.

Stop now, spoiler ahead.

It is not about extinction, its about Emily’s ex and a Travis’s brother who can miraculously find a whole bunch of people to go along with a stupid kill and kidnap plan to avoid child support payments.

Something new!

What a wonderful story full of intriguing characters. They characters "stole the show" instead of the the basis for the book. I was more interested as to what was going to take to get the little girl her insulin. That was my focus, not the dead animals! But I am sure that book 2 will get into the nitty gritty of the story

"Everything is connected."
A fast paced thriller set in the horror confined of an apocalyptic event: the unexplained deaths of birds everywhere. As the chaos of the falling birds causes motor accidents jamming the highways, a twelve years old girl is kidnapped as her mother hangs trapped in their burning car. Who has taken Anna, and why? A race is on to find her: being diabetic, without her insulin medication she can only survive for a limited time. As fish, then farm and domesticated animals, also fall prey to the mysterious 'Event', the reader meets those involved on both sides in the kidnapping story. Despite a certain predictability, this is an eventful story which draws in the reader, holding attention to the very end. The apocalyptic part of the book - the animal extinction - is not, however, covered beyond brief mentions of the difficulties and chaos resulting from the initial horror. Perhaps a further volume will elaborate on this.

Narration is by Miles Meili, and was well paced, clear and with God articulation, a touch of emotional excitement breathed into his delivery. Individual characters voicings were also present. My thanks to the rights holder of Extinct, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audible Unleashed.. It was an enjoyable thriller, with reasonable character development, more than just a shoot it up story. However, for anyone looking for survival practices following an apocalyptic disaster, this is not that kind of story. Maybe next time. But this is a straightforward, if convoluted, who?, why? and how to save the day? thriller.

Ok, I enjoyed this BUT I'm super annoyed that I expected some epic about the end of the world, as implied by the synopsis blurb and instead got a story about a kidnapping and family drama.
For a book called Extinct, you would not be faulted for assuming the book revolves around the mass extinction event going on, however that is not the case which is a shame because a book that did that would be exponentially more interesting than the family drama that it ended up being.
To say that the extinction event happens in the background is an understatement, you could remove that entire part of the book (all 3 pages of it) and it wouldn't change ANYTHING about the main story revolving around the kidnapping and drama between the characters.

This is not a post-apocalyptic story as the book is described. This is just a blatant lie, the book takes place during the apocalypse.

Other than that the general story was well paced and exciting, even if the plot twist was painfully obvious.

It is absolutely shameful that a book called “extinct” barely has any actual dystopia in it. People are mildly disturbed at best.

The world we knew is gone

Birds falling out of the sky, hitting cars causing major accidents! What was happening? People panicking. Looters running around taking everything. In the midst of panic a young girl is kidnapped. Becomes a race to find her, she is a type 1 diabetic with no insulin. Every page you turn more horror is happening.
A good book to read. Great job writing Jack Hunt.

This was a very exciting book, it kept me trying to figure out who were the good guy and the purpose of kidnapping a child. The birds and the fish are a story all on there own. I couldn't put this book down. I am very glad that book 2 is already out, I hate having to wait, I am right into the story.

I would suggest that anyone that likes post apocalyptic books give this one a try, I enjoyed it

Torn

I thought I was getting post apocalypse and instead I got…kidnapping thriller. I thought Kyle was supposed to be smart. Way too many characters, poorly fleshed out. Why did everyone have a dead relation? Why did everyone in the book brutally murder someone? Why was the animal extinction an afterthought in this book? So many questions that one only hopes Hunt can answer in the second and third instalment of this trilogy. A decent writer but this one a messy miss for me.

Fast moving, great characterization. Realistic portrayal of humans in horrendous situations

This writer Is really skilled in showing how people can overcome the worst situations. I enjoyed the fact that the bad guys had more layers but still not enough to feel a loss when they died. The good guys were not perfect but tough enough to make it through.

Good Story.

This was a fast paced story packed full of adventure. Its a great 2 to 3 HR read, I prefer Mr. Hunt's books that go way more in depth in regard to characters but hopefully that will happen in the next installments to come. Regardless its a well written highly entertaining story. I enjoyed it.

They were facing an unknown world, a terrifying future that brought only questions. What now? No one could tell what lay ahead or how bad it would get, only that the battle to survive wasn’t over, it had only just begun.

Driving home should be been the standard traffic jams and drivers raging, but instead Professor Emily Mansfield would find herself lost in a pandemic with her young daughter Anna. Out of the blue the birds fell from the skies, causing worldwide panic and accidental gore. Finding herself flipped in her SUV, her daughter was scuffed up but alive and was desperate to find help for her mother. With a shattered leg and trapped in a vehicle about to catch fire, Emily was fighting to remain conscious as she watched two strangers snatch her daughter and drove away. Unable to free herself or aod her daughter, she herself barely managed to get out of her vehicle before it caught on fire. Reaching out to Travis Young, he was now her diabetic daughter's only hope as she's stranded on the freeway. A park ranger who's at the top of his game, Travis is falling head over heels for Emily as she navigated a nasty divorce from her police his and Kyle. After he rose a fist to her, she knew it was time to get out and she was fighting tooth and nail for full custody of their children; Anna and Lucas. As the event around the world began unfolding, it brought Kyle and Travis together as they began working across Vermont to get to Anna.

“What is happening? That’s what people are demanding to know. It’s been several hours since the birds fell, and large numbers of fish were found floating in lakes, rivers, and oceans. So far there have been no further reports of any other animal deaths but questions are still arising. What we do know is that top military officials are preparing to roll out the National Guard in response to what could become a breakdown of society as people of all nations react to this. How will this affect the economy? Will this endanger the waterways? And what are the long-term effects? It’s unknown right now. But first and foremost, scientists are scrambling to figure out if this is some kind of airborne pathogen that could affect humans. So far there are no signs of that. Thank God. Tune in later to find out as we bring in a panel of experts to discuss the impact this will have on the biosphere, the oxygen levels, and the livelihoods of millions working within the global commercial fishing industry, which we know accounts for hundreds of billions of dollars every year, and countless jobs including the tourism industry.”

Taking Lucas and dropping him off with his sister Steph, Travis is equipped with his own brother Danny and Emily's sister Carla as they race against time. Knowing every minute without her insulin pushes Anna closer to death, it would fall to more unfortunate accidents as they kept trying to to track her. Able to access her location and message her through her I watch,Emily kept talking to her daughter through her ordeal and trying everything to make sure they find her. Unbeknownst to her, Kyle hired the very people who kidnapped her daughter and the same individuals working their way to Steph's Inn where her other son waits vulnerable. When Travis learns of Kyle's true part he played, it was too late for his brother Danny who was fatally stabbed by Kyle and left for dead in a restroom. With Carla's help, they split ways where she went to find Emily and he went to get Anna back. Confronted with the last living member, Bill, he forced his hand and allows him to escape as he threw Anna over pard into the dead fish infested water. Saved in the nick of time, she's becoming stable as she fights off the effects of her ordeal. Meanwhile, Carla manages to make it to a severely battered and bruised Emily who would aim the shotgun and finally take Kyle's life. Reunited with her daughter, they all now have to have a world where animals have been knocked instinct and figure out just what is left for humanity.

“Simply put, too many distractions keep us from realizing what is happening until it directly impacts us.

3.5 stars. I liked this and buzzed right through it. It isn't really what it's billed to be though, a post-apocalyptic thriller. The whole apocalypse this was really quite interesting, but it was more of a back story, just something happening - the actual events (kidnapping and rescue attempts) would have happened regardless, and the whole apocalyptic situation just made it so that everyone was really crazy and murderous and won't have to face any consequences, because there is just too much going on. It just felt like a little too much, a bit of a "really?" if you think about it all. I think everyone kills someone before it's all over-ish.

The whole apocalypse ... I am interested to know what the cause was and what happens, and this is a first in a series, so maybe we'll see. Glancing at the series (trilogy) I do LOVE the consistency of the covers. Looks like the next book takes up with some of our characters and fast-forwards to four years in the future, actually living in the apocalyptic world. But as mentioned ... here, although the birds lead to some action (car accidents, riots) it's really not the main focus, more of an afterthought.

I went with the audio edition. Narration was good. Text included in KindleUnlimited (but I don't currently have a subscription, or I might have glanced through and made some additional notes). I received a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Stirringly creative twist on the apocalypse

Given Jack Hunt's inability to tell me bad stories (at least so far), I knew I'd be in for yet another treat in the apocalyptic department. The man sure knows how to keep my attention.

And my attention was good and properly kept.

Because despite this latest event ravishing the planet, in which animals all over the world start to mysteriously die off, there's something even more sinister at play right in the middle of it all. Chaos erupts rather swiftly from the sheer mass of birds falling from the sky, sending the lives of our main characters into a tailspin. And that chaos is the ultimate fuel to feed the crazy things going in this story. It's quite the wild ride, and in some cases, that's LITERALLY what it is.

Some folks may be turned off by the fact that the apocalyptic occurrence of mass animal deaths, though significant, isn't the full main story at all. Nope. It's more of a setting where the real story is taking place. There's a lot of other mess to contend with. But honestly, what good is an apocalypse if you don't capitalize on the ugly side of it all, including, no, ESPECIALLY humanity? We sure do make a mess of things and this book is literally no different. There's some mess, I tell ya. Thrills and violence and surprises and MESS.

An excellent start to the trilogy and I look forward to seeing what happens next.

This was really an abduction/attempted murder mystery with disaster only used as a backdrop. The very horrifying event of the sudden and world-wide deaths of animal species only reaches us from snippets of news that the main characters are hearing as they are trying to rescue two women. The military has a saying that no plan survives first contact with the enemy and this murky murder and abduction plan did not survive first contact with the perpetrators. As much bungling as occurred when they were trying to complete this crime, the rescuers were not much better. They stopped absolutely everywhere and picked up almost everyone along the way. I feared they would eventually forget what they were trying to do with all of the distraction. The disastrous death of species served mostly to up the tension and to prevent help from law enforcement. Though 911 never would work, they could communicate via Apple Watch. I would suggest that all law enforcement be issued Apple Watches from now on. I'm kind of curious as to what caused the rapid extinction of wild and domestic animals, but also on the fence about continuing in case Book 2 only uses the disaster as background noise.

I wish it focused more on the death of the animals. I went into this thinking it was going to be more of an apocalypse book. It is one but it’s more so focused on a mystery/abduction.

The diabetic information in this book? There’s a decent amount that’s wrong and it bothers me a lot.
If she’s not eating, her blood sugar is going to get lower. Do you know what else lowers blood sugar? Water. Drinking large glasses of water will lower your blood sugar.
So she would have been dangerously low and that insulin they gave her probably would have killed her.
It’s much safer to have a high blood sugar since you have a much larger range of numbers before it gets very dangerous.
And they forgot the back of the arm. Much more popular spot the take insulin than the leg or butt.

I know I’m being really technical but two of my immediate family members have diabetes and I also work with it a lot. I tried not to let it bug me but I failed. Sorry.

They also felt like they weren’t in a major rush to get to Anna. Could just be how I read it but oh well.

Overall it’s okay, I’m still fascinated by the idea of all animals dying. That will keep me going to the next book.

*This book was given to me by the author at my request, and I provided this voluntary, unbiased review.*

3.9/5

From the author blurb, I was expecting a post-apocalyptic/survival thriller. I think I got about half-way through expecting the post-apocalypse to occur and what I would expect to see. Instead, we are thrown into an urban suspense thriller, with a global event happening in the background. This story is technically a pre-apocalyptic thriller! While I was a bit 'meh' on this fact, the actual meat of the story was convincing.

A few of the events seems to be tall tales, but I enjoyed it all the way through. Lots of characters to like and baddies to not like just the same. I also love Vermont, and loved the scenery of Vermont back-country. All in all, I would still give this book a recommend, even with its *maybe* mis-categorization. I think you'll like it!

Different “flavor” from J. Hunt, but GREAT READ just the same! …..

Jack Hunt is one of the top writers of modern fiction in the apocalypse genre. His world building and character development is sublime. Anyone who has read a Jack Hunt book would instantly recognize his writing.
That’s why this story surprised me a bit. There was a different element to it. Perhaps… it was the “murder mystery” feel, though it was more a “whodunnit” storyline within the book.
In any case — it’s a solid, well written, engrossing, thrilling read. And it sets the stage for Book 2 in every way … where the tale of surviving within this global crisis, or “new world,” will begin in earnest.
I couldn’t put it down - I read it in one day! Starting Book 2 same day! You really cannot beat a Jack Hunt book. They’re truly addictive.

Walker Texas Extinction

Man I try not to give two star reviews because it is hard to write a book, and put yourself out for criticism. In its favor, the book moves along. It doesn't get bogged down in exposition or back story. The story is consistent and easy to follow. Problem is it's more like Walker Texas Ranger than a story about extinction.

Occasionally, someone mentions, "birds are dead now fish. Gee that could be bad." That's about it. The story is about divorce, custody arrangements, corruption, and dysfunctional family dynamics. All of the characters are messed up in some form or fashion.

It's a fast read. Oh cows are now dead.

Ok, so I really enjoy books by Jack Hunt, but I did not give this a 5 star rating simply because it was too close in plot to the movie Greenland with Gerard Butler (great film!). Diabetic kid kidnapped while the adults run around trying to find & save their family as the world is ending. It was also very similar to the book Flight 3430 by Jacqueline Druga, with the mass animal die-off, although with that book there was an explanation. Still, if you like apocalyptic novels, Extinct is a fast-paced read and the women were kick-ass!

The Apocalypse was a backstory to the kidnapping and return of Emily's daughter. True, it starts out as hundreds of birds falling from the sky, but that's Not what the book focuses on. It's all about the kidnapping, and the roles of all the adults involved in trying to get her back. Occasionally a character will mention a new development in the "event".

Ex: Man stops at gas station to refuel
Cashier: Did you hear about the fish dying??

Just an example of how the new events were introduced into the story. It was a s if they were all afterthoughts. Oh, BTW all the bees have died off.

Excellent writer, novels never disappoints, a must read

Storyline is fast-paced,lots of action, twists and believable characters. This author is one of my favorites because his novels are well-written, characters have depth, and his editor deserves an A. This was a gripping page turner for sure. The idea of all animals on Earth becoming extinct in a matter of days is quite the shocking backdrop for a story. That premise unfortunately gets pushed a bit too far to the back in this first book, which is why I rated it only 4 stars instead of 5. The suspenseful storyline of abduction and deception takes up about 90% of the book, but I am highly curious to see where the story goes from here with this sort of dystopian world created by the author.

It’s not awful; it’s just not what you think it’s about.

Marketed as an apocalyptic book, but the primary plot driver is a dysfunctional couple in the midst of a messy divorce and the soon-to-been-husband/father arranges a kidnap of one of his children (completely forgetting the other) and/or the murder of his soon-to-be-ex-wife.

Very little in the way of character development, and what there was was stereotypes.

Not awfully written.

Well written but unexpected plot.

I think I must not have read the blurb as I was expecting more of the extinction plot rather than a child abduction thriller. I still enjoyed it and it was really well written with some good characters.
Not sure it was what I was looking for though, hence the 4 stars.

not a good time and getting worse

list all the ways civilization spirals down to end and you have it in this story. OF course the news is still being reported to show us how bad things are. yes, it is well written, but I am not sure it will help anyone to survive if this really happens. needless to say the situation is very dark in this case.

An exciting read

While frightening events occur worldwide, little is known or delved into in this, the first book of the series. However, nonstop action closely follows the main characters. Letting me forgetting there is a global catastrophe occurring. I expect answers to be revealed in time. Starting book 2 now of this well written series.
