The Paper Dragon

Another brilliant action packed book. I love how these characters have grown and how much they care for one another. I’m getting nervous about Gavin possibly leaving for a while without Wrenlow. I love their friendship. On to the next one.

Another adventure awaits..
To start off this story we find Gavin finally working with Anna of the El’aras to control his magic and better understand it. He is still questioning wether he should stay in Yoran or leave. This seems to be a running theme in the last few books as Gavin feels he’s responsible for all the bad things that are happening in Yoran. This one is no different.
Imogen’s character is being greatly expanded upon which I am very happy about, she is a very mysterious character.
Once again there’s a new magical threat to Yoran but this time it’s something Imogen is familiar with and once again the “gang” must once again band together to resolve it.
The book still manages to keep things interesting by adding new rich characters and of course expanding on the recurring ones.
As the book concludes there is betrayal and a battle which doesn’t disappoint which kept me entertained. I felt this book was enjoyable but perhaps titled differently would be best as future readers will find out at about 90% in..

Highly entertaining book, that has you involved with the characters new and familiar. Loved the other books, but each seems to get better. Ready for the next book.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was provided an advanced readers copy of the book, in exchange for an honest review. As with the previous four books in this series, I will purchase this book once it is available in print (either paperback or hard cover).
I have found this series to be highly entertaining and this book, book 5 in the series, did not disappoint. With the following summary, I am attempting to offer some basic description without spoiling the story for you, the potential reader. The primary character, Gavin, in this book, has accepted and embraced his non-human, magical heritage, and is using it to the benefit of his team and adoptive city, Yoran. Within the book, Gavin continues to grow as a leader and as a team member, learning to get along better with those around them and to take their interests and input to heart. I feel there is a lot of character growth over the course of the last book and this book, and it is particularly noted as Gavin again leads a team effort outside of his adoptive home city to help Imogen complete a quest of hers that has the potential to effect the region if not the world. My only critique of this is that the ARC does not have any maps, of either city or the region. As the travel times vary widely based upon the method of transportation, it really is unclear how close cities are to one another, and how close they are to other geographical areas of interest. Further, as the description of the destination city, Loruv, is fairly barebones, with only a couple of areas of interest described in meaningful detail, a city map might be helpful to help fill in some details for the reader.
While this book is about a "former" assassin, who has taken on a role of city protector, the fight scenes are not particularly gory, and do not serve to glorify violence, but serve only to advance the plot. The book had only passing references to relationships, and no appreciable sexual content or innuendo. I don't recall any harsh language in this book, so if there was any, it was isolated and limited. I do not recall any content that would trigger strong reader emotions such as sexual violence, domestic violence, etc. The book does continue a trend of talking about racial differences, as they exist in that fantasy world, but the discussion does not take on a tone of superiority of one race over another, but simply acknowledging differences between the races.
It appears the next book is intended to end the series. At six books, this is what I would consider a longer series, but not the longest fantasy series I've read. The author has done well to maintain the reader's interest, with a tight, compelling story. With the progress of the story to date, I anticipate that the sixth book should bring the story to a satisfactory close, not that I look forward to the story ending, but I think that at that point, the story will have been adequately told. Given that the primary character is still learning to control his abilities, and not having mastered them, in book 5, one could argue that a whole new series could open for at least some of these characters, with Gavin's powers fully appreciated and understood. That is completely true, but the nature of the story would change significantly, and would warrant its own series at that point.
I am happy to have had the opportunity to read this book and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I look forward to when it is available in print on Amazon.

This story is mainly about Imogen's quest, one she did not manage to resolve but was forced to do so now. Gavin saw the danger of her quest and offered his support, so together with Gaspar and Theren, an El'aras fighter they leave Yoran and travel to Imogen's past home, Loruv. Gavin really liked Theren, finding him a very pleasant travel companion, however his hatred for sorcerers made him a dangerous pawn in the game. They needed to locate the keystone in order to obliterate the Hyadan, who were creatures of darkness and whose power corrupted those who chose to use it. These shadow creatures fed on magic, and also had the ability to replicate, thus were like a never ending foe. A massive battle took place pitching the forces of light against those of darkness using all their fighting skills and enchantments and Gavin using all of his core reserves of magic to shatter the stones, channelling through the power of the ring but even though he used all the techniques Anna, the Risen Shard had taught him he wasn't sure it would be enough to defeat such a powerful and highly trained enemy. I love the animal enchantments they travelled upon and more so the paper dragon who was awesome. This is another very exciting episode in the chain breaker series and one which is calling for Gavin to move on as his time in Yoran seems to be up, or is it?

A good story, but...
I really do like the story even though I get absolutely impatient with Gavin. His "Tristan paranoia" drives me to distraction. However, the "but" isn't about any of that.
I'm generally not what one might refer to as a "grammar Nazi" since my grammar skills are lacking. Regardless, when it becomes awkward, taking away from the continuity it can be jarring to one that reads as I do. I totally immerse myself in the story and when there are the kind of errors where there are words missing it tends to take away from the story. There were enough errors in the editing that I had to say something. At one point, Imogen seems to be in 2 places at the same time.
I know the author turns out a volume of stories for which it might be difficult to keep up. However, may I suggest a re-read, in its entirety, before you turn them out? I believe that would help a lot.
All that being said, it's still a good story and well worth the read. Obviously I like the story. This is the fifth book in the series after all.

Fun read
I do like this series, but it feels like it is becoming a little formulaic.looking forward to the next one. Hopefully it doesnt end with the whole main charachter beats down the bad guys to where he doesnt have any energy left then takes the drug to let him beat down bad guys some more then when he has nothing left finds some little something to let him win the day and collapses at the end.

And the data continues
I enjoyed the Paper Dragon better than the third and forth books. Paper Dragon felt more fast paced. Could be because the story is coming to a conclusion and our questions and theories are being answered. I think we will see Gavin, the chain breaker evolve into something more. The book ends with Gavin struggling to come to a decision. Or gives into the fact that he has to move on. He needs to be prepared for when the Order returns.

If I have to read the words "core reserves" one more time......I made it through book 5, but I doubt that I'll continue. This book was annoying. "Am I being manipulated by Tristan? Is Tristan behind all of the world's evils? Did Tristan make me think that?" Plus the continuing problems with the MC using his magic, unless, of course, he needs to win some battle. Then he miraculously is able to use it in just the right manner to win. Anyway, I'm done with this and on to better books.

Summary: Good fantasy story, very interesting characters, great plot, and layers of intrigue. Really enjoyed this one. Book 2 build on the theme - really good. Book 3 even better. Book 4 dragged a bit, but still entertaining. Book 5 really good but I've had enough

Gavin must accompany Imogen and Gaspar to Loruv to help Imogen recover a stolen item.
Great new adventure with plenty of twists and turns. Plus Imogen's Back story is revealed and some more of Gaspars.
Gavin is starting to understand more about is power and how to use it. Definitely recommend this story and the whole series

Loved it. I was excited before i read it because i couldn't wait for him to use the Dragon he got in Stone Wolf. So many things happened in this one. I learned more about Imogen, Gavin is learning more about his magic, Anna is starting to let some information slip, etc. I can't wait for the next one.

Buildup to a Conclusion
Gavin perseveres despite his lack of control over his powers. Friends start to drift away. Should Gavin stay or go? The choices he makes seem to be orchestrated by others instead of himself. He really doesn’t know what he wants from life. Maybe he will come to some decisions in the next installment.

Another good book. Each book in this series expands all the main characters and we learn a bit more about them. There were a couple of confusing spots in this book that were cleared up as the book went on and a couple more that I expect will clear up in the next book. Definitely worth reading

I always enjoy these books. Yes, sometimes the hero is overpowered and you usually know he's going to win. But real life is bleak enough. Gavin is enjoyable and we got to learn much more about Imogen and other parts of their world.

Holmberg’s best book in the series so far. Filled with intrigue, suspense & plot twists. He also filled in some of the history of the main characters. Great character development and further bonding between the main characters. Can’t wait to see how he continues Gavin’s story.

First off, “Wow”. Seems the more of this series you read, the better they get! The paper Dragon definitely had me on the edge of my seat to the point that it was hard to put the book down. This is a huge change since book 1.
