TW// murder (including of mothers), suicide, domestic/physical abuse

This volume is super depressing. There was sad stuff in the previous volumes, but something about Akaza's backstory just really got to me. I was really happy with how his character arc finished though.

I loved getting to see Kanao get her moment to shine. Truly one of the most underrated characters in the series and I can't wait to see the rest of her big battle in volume 19.

Usually I'm writing spoiler-free reviews so everybody can read them without any worries, but this time I cannot do that. If I do not write exactly what I have in mind, and name all the emotions that run through my body, I think I will explode!

TANJIRO AND GIYUU VS AKAZA.

"If you want to kill Tanjiro, you'll have to get through me first!" [Giyuu]

I already said how much I love this duo. I knew that I would cheer for them with all my might, they are two of my favorite characters in Demon Slayer, but I never thought that I will cry with gratefulness for this team up. Why? Because:

if Tanjiro wasn't there, Giyuu would die.
And if Guyuu wasn't there, Tanjiro would die.

They relied on each other HEAVILY through this battle, and it's understandable. Their opponent was an Upper Rank Three, who already killed one Hashira. Both were brought to their limits, they were barely functioning, but still stood straight, facing Akaza, trying to do everything in their might to defeat him, both painfully aware that they should end this fight as fast as possible and rush to Tamayo and Muzan. Their physical and mental strength was something to admire, for sure.

When it comes to Akaza's backstory, it was quite obvious that it will happen and it was also quite obvious that it will be emotionally impactful. You might have hated him for killing Rengoku, but I never thought of him as a bad guy, not like the other demons. He never radiated any evil aura, he was just a guy who wanted to fight (the stronger the opponent the better), and that's it. I thought that he might have been a good guy in his human life and, like the other demons, was just manipulated by Muzan. The truth was a little more complicated than that, though.

"They may whip me and break my bones, but I can endure anything for you, Dad. Even if it lasts hundreds of years." [Hakuji]

I knew that I will share tears while reading Akaza's backstory, and I was not wrong. But what I was ready for, was a romantic love story (which also happened), not an emotional relationship between a father and son.

I love romantic stories, but if you know me, you know that I'm a goner for any type of a parent-children, siblings, friends, master-students (and so on) stories. This volume brought me that, through Akaza's father and master, and I couldn't be more grateful, despite it ending with a tragedy. Hakuji was just a child, who had to grow up quickly, because of his father's illness. A purely protective child, who never cared about himself, only cared about his beloved father. Because of that pure love, he had done everything in his might (wrong things but with unquestionably good intentions) to collect money for his father's medicines, but lost him due to suicide. Can you imagine the amount of pain he must have felt, having nobody, but his father, and suddenly losing him? It could completely crush an adult, so what chances can a child have?

I had tattoos of a criminal. I never imagined having a future. Much less a future where I was loved by someone. [Hakuji]

"I could never imagine a future where I could see next year or the year after. [...] you saw my future, Hakuji. And as if it was natural, you told me there was a next year, I was really happy." [Koyuki]

After the loss of his father, Hakuji gained two other people that he felt protective of. It was so cute to see the growing love between him and Koyuki, despite her illness. These two seemed doomed for different reasons, not allowing themselves to dream about the future, but despite that, they found each other and saved each other. They were each other's future, each other's little miracle, and it was so beautiful to witness and so painful to see it fade away. For a protective person like Hakuji, losing all people he cared for completely crushed his soul. No wonder that the moment he met Muzan, he said that he doesn't care if he dies. He lost all his reasons to keep on going.

'For a moment I smelled gratitude from Akaza. Why did he smile?' [Tanjiro]

His suicide was completely unexpected. I thought that he will just let Tanjiro (or Giyuu) kill him, but his demonic body (and mentality too, I guess) couldn't let that happen. The gasp I let out when he blowed himself up had to be heard in the next room. As sad as I felt, I also felt relief for him because the suicide meant that he could finally stop fighting, that he could finally be free.

But then I saw Muzan and I screamed.

I am sure that it wasn't the real Muzan (since the real one is trapped and had a slightly different look), but a personification of Akaza's demonic personality or his will to keep on fighting and becoming stronger. Still, I was so angry at this Muzan, I mean, how dare he interfere?! Hasn't he done enough already?! Leave the guy alone, damnit!! Then Koyuki had also showed up, and it was interesting to see the two sides of Akaza fight for his attention. It was a relief that Koyuki had won, for both Akaza's sake and for the sake of his opponents (Tanjiro and Giyuu would have been killed, there is no doubt about it).

"I'm home, father. I'm back. Master... Koyuki... I'm home." [Hakuji]

I let out a whole river of happy tears for this guy, truly. As much as I could hate him for killing Rengoku, I can't. All I could feel was enormous joy that he found his way back to his beloved ones, for a short time only, but still, it was such an incredibly emotional and impactful scene. I hope that he's feeling at home, free, no matter where did he land after his death.

P.S. Tanjiro and Giyuu passed out, who's gonna go to Tamayo and Muzan??

KANAO VS DOUMA.

"You're actually an empty shell. A ridiculous joke. Why were you even born?" [Kanao]

THIS WAS SO SHOCKING!! These words came out of a mouth of a girl who had trouble with speaking and deciding for herself. These words came out of a mouth of a girl who was always sweet, gentle and kind, a true angel. I know that she spoke them to a demon, a truly disgusting killer who deserves the worst, but o my gosh. I did not expect from her to be so mean! I understand the anger perfectly, she just lost a person she thought to be not only a master, but a sister, but these words caught me off guard. After my initial shock I cheered up, because how could I not?! And I wanted to see Kanao fight, she had to be incredibly strong considering the fact that she was Shinobu's tsuguko. But at the same time, was it possible for her to win this, since Shinobu, a Hashira, couldn't?

THE UNEXPECTED FLASHBACK. INOSUKE JOINS THE FIGHT.

"Have we met before?"
"I don't remember meeting a maggot like you before. Don't touch my fur with your dirty hands!"
"No. We have. I know you."

As much as Kanao's attitude was shocking, Inosuke joining her against Douma and Douma revealing their connection made my jaw land on the floor. Say what?! Huh?! I thought that Shinobu's fight was personal, I never expected Inosuke's one to be too (to be fair, he never expected it either)!

"Inosuke, your mom will protect you." [Kotoha]

As much as Akaza's backstory was an emotional one, Inosuke's mother's backstory wiped out all the competition and took the crown for me. I thought that she didn't threw her baby off a cliff to kill him, she cried while doing it, so it was obvious that she didn't want to do so, but she didn't have any other choice. But I hadn't expected of this story to come back, and certainly hadn't expected that it's connected to Douma! The amount of tears I shared was way bigger than the one I shared for Akaza, Kotoha's story crushed me. What a poor soul! She had no parents, no family and the two people that she should count on, her husband and her mother-in law, mercilessly abused her. She gave birth to a baby as a teenager. It must have been so incredibly scary, living with abusers, giving birth and having to live with them, exposing herself and her baby to such cruelty. No wonder she tried to run away and was seeking shelter.

Why it had to be Douma's cult, though? :(

She must have fallen for his fake charming personality and his sweet promise of a save heaven. She didn't have any other place to go, of course she agreed. The moment she realized that she lived with a demon, she tried to run away, but it was too late. She lost her life, but she made sure that her baby survives. That's why she threw it off a cliff. She never wanted it to die, SHE WANTED IT TO LIVE.

"Kotoha was so unfortunate. Was there ever a happy moment in her life? She had a pointless existence." [Douma]

He was talking about a woman who faced abuse. He was talking about a woman who gave birth as a teenager, having nobody to rely on, but herself. He was talking about a woman who loved her baby so much that she gave away her life for his. He mocked her for being stupid and helpless, she apologized to her baby for being stupid and helpless, but she was one of the bravest people in Demon Slayer. She was a mother. A true example of a mother, who loved her baby with all her might, and made sure that it will have a future, knowing well that she will not be by its side.

I cried for hours after this.

"Allow me to thank you for letting me remember. But I won't just cut your head off now! I'll show you what true hell is like!" [Inosuke]

I hope that Inosuke will do what he says, because if Douma's ending will just be disintegration, like the other demons, I will scream my anger out to the heavens. He deserves to SUFFER, painfully and mercilessly SUFFER, for everything he had done to all the poor women that he had killed. He and Muzan as well, they both can't just die easily, I want them to truly pay for everything. I will be truly upset if it's not gonna happen.

Anyways, this volume was such a big surprise for me. It was an incredible experience, I cried so hard. I am both excited and worried of what will happen next, I mean, it was just volume 18, how much I will have to endure until the finale??

The see-through world is a special ability that Tanjirou uses against the battle of Akaza. Tomioka's life was flashing before his eyes when he fought Akaza. A very tense but also emotional battle.

Douma's battle is back in action. He's the type of character that tells his own backstory but loves talking about the backstories of others more. This new backstory reveals something shocking that will cause many more readers to hate Douma. If not, you are one of the few that don't hate him. Congratulations, I guess, though I wonder what that says about you as an individual.

Hakuji's past is so unfortunate. I think this was the saddest past for me when I first read Kimetsu no Yaiba. Totally get why many others also sympathise for this character that many haven't known well before that. It's scary how little one knows about some characters until their past is revealed. It was two chapters long, one of the longest backstories, but it is so worth reading about. It reminded me a lot about A Silent Voice 'cause there was a similar scene and I'm very emotionally attached to this film so I also felt emotional when I first heard of Hakuji's past.

The way I STAY feeling bad for demons because of their amazingly crazy, deeply written backstories 😭😭😭 It's literally so insane how I can go from hating them to being on the verge of tears for them. The amount of character development packed within such a short time span is incredible.

This is one of the greatest volumes by Koyoharu-sensei. It starts off with the battle between Tanjiro and Akaza and he defeats him but he won't give up and then we get one of the most beautiful backstories about a guy who lost his father because of other people but when he found a family he lost them again and the way it happens and his times with them is explored here and its so good, its one of the best things ever. It makes you cry the things that happened to him. Its one of the most beautiful backstories ever.

Then the battle between Doma and Kanao starts with Inosuke coming in and the way it connects to his backstory too, the history that Doma and Inosuke share makes it so much interesting and makes it way better and personal. Its gonna be an epic fight next. I loved this volume so much and man the author pulled out everything she had to make it a worthwhile read.

EN I've mentioned this before, but one of Demon Slayer's greatest strengths is its ability to humanize its villains. By delving into their pasts and showing the events that led them to become Demons, the story adds depth and complexity to every character.

This volume exemplifies that beautifully. It’s incredibly emotional and profoundly moving.

A fantastic read!

--

Re-read 2023: Well, still as fantastic and well written as before. Sad, wonderful, and really gets you to know all the characters as they fight for survival. Still a 5 out of 5.

Original Review: Happy for this to be my 700th review of the year, since Demon Slayer is probably the best manga I've read all year along with Spy X Family.

This volume starts off amazing with Tanjiro and Giyu putting up a hell of a fight against Akaza and boy oh boy do both struggle and play off some awesome moves. On top of that we get Akaza background, and as much as we hate him at this point, his background sure adds so many layers to make him a better character. Then we switch over to Doma and his fight with Kanao. It's bitter and tough to watch but also great. Then my boy Inosuke comes in to help and things get even better. We also get more Ino background, hell yes.

This is a fantastic, fast paced, brutal chapter with multiple characters facing near death experiences while also pushing on. How the hell are we going to end this? I'm expecting to cry soon.

A 5 out of 5.

Me quedan 5 volúmenes 🤭
