The Sight of You

Rate this book
The Light We Lost meets How to Walk Away in this romantic and page-turning American debut that poses a heartbreaking question: Would you choose love, if you knew how it would end?

Joel has sworn off falling in love. But when he meets Callie, he can't help being drawn to her. In Callie, he sees a second chance at life. And in Joel, Callie discovers the kind of love she'd always hoped was real. They challenge each other to take chances, to laugh, and to trust that no matter how hard each falls, the other will be there to catch them.

But Joel has a secret. He dreams about the people he loves, and these dreams always come true. One night, Joel has the dream of Callie he's feared the most, and each must decide: Can Callie stay, knowing her fate? And if her days must be numbered, is there a life she is meant to live?

Told in Joel and Callie's voices, The Sight of You is a sweeping, romantic, and unforgettable American debut, about the bravery it takes to love, especially when we think we know how the story will end.

*Major Spoiler Alert*

The Sight of You excels because of its ensemble of strong robust characters and the paranormal elements that drive the narrative.

Miller wrote a tightly plotted story where, Joel, our MC, serves as the pivot around whom the other characters oscillate. Notwithstanding the blatant foreshadowing at the onset of the book, I was happy to embark on the journey with Callie and Joel and, to a lesser degree, Finn; even though it was a foregone conclusion that either one of the two main characters would meet a tragic end.

And although it was indeed tragic, I'm grateful that Miller handled that aspect with sensitivity to her readers.

Overall, a remarkable and gut-wrenching story..

I was completely enthralled with this book. It is a love story but also so much more, it’s written in such a beautiful way that will capture your heart and make you laugh and cry!!

Joel meets Callie in the cafe she works in and they are instantly attracted to each other. Joel is scared to get involved with anyone as he has dreams about his loved ones that come true. Joel cannot fight his attraction with Callie and they start dating.

The romance between Callie and Joel is so touching and I was desperate for them to have a happy ending. But when Joel dreams about Callie it will change their relationship.

This book will stay in my thoughts for a long time.

I cannot recommend this enough. I am not usually into romance, but this captured my attention from the first page.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

3 stars for a great, tug at your heartstrings debut!

A very emotional story that asks an interesting question. How would you live your life if you knew what would happen to your loved ones?

Joel and Callie are strangers who have a meet cute in a local coffee shop where Callie works. Joel is an empty human being who is blessed with the curse of being able to see the future of his loved ones. He has struggled his entire adult life with how to cope with this "gift". He has sworn off any real romantic connection because the other person only gets hurt loving someone who cannot give their full selves in return. Callie has her own share of heartbreak and is a person who lives a very safe life. She puts others before herself and doesn't do enough to break free and live out her own dreams. When Joel and Callie meet and fall in love, the reader is treated to a twist on the typical romance story and the ending is what really elevates this book the most.

I can definitely see why this book was marketed to fans of The Light We Lost and that was a smart play. While I enjoyed this book, it was predictable (particularly in the middle), but there are many strengths within its pages. The last part of the book worked most for me. I don't want to reveal too much so I will hide my thoughts in a spoiler.

Overall, if you're looking for a contemplative read and you're a romance fan, this would be a great pick for you. I really want to thank Putnam Books and Holly Miller for sending me an early copy to read and provide an honest review of.

I'm not sure were to start with this one. I absolutely adored it.
To start off with its not entirely my favourite genre of book - maybe with whats going on in the world I wanted to escape, and escape I did. I am not much for soppy and romance but I was somehow drawn to this book and lets say it did not disappoint.
This is truly a page turning debut - so much so I had to stop and check that this in fact was Holly Millers first book.
This is going to be a summer sell out - we are not talking sex or lust but a tale of love and sacrifice that will at some point have you crying. If you could see into the future what would you do with it?
Such a well written book this is a romance story with a difference and I bet will be turned into a movie.
Joel our main character is a dreamer, but he only dreams about people he knows and loves. Because Joel is special, he can see into the future with his dreams, he becomes a little bit of a recluse because of this. Knowing he cannot change his dreams in real life he doesn't want to risk love anymore. Joel doesn't want to see the future of someone he loves so he avoids people at all costs.

But when Callie enters his Realm things could be different. Joel slowly allows himself to fall in love against his better judgment and the story unravels.
I cant say to much because I would ruin it for you... but set across six years we hear narration from Joel and Callie. Poor Joel in agony because he knows whats going to happen in the future. Does he tell Callie and does Callie want to know what he sees in his dreams? How would you react? Would you want to know what Joel dreamt about you?
You'll have to read it to find out.
With such a depth to Joel and his love for Callie he lives his life with realism and sacrifices that Im not sure I could make.
The exchange at the train station and the last scene had me gasping so much that my dogs came over to check I was ok. The characters lift you up, and are perfect examples of how you can be happy in life, whatever it throws at you.
A gloriously beautiful novel that comes recommended, you'll sit and devour it. Holly Miller I am waiting for you next story. I hope it comes soon.

i read this because i wanted to cry and this sounded like it could deliver - it didn't.

while it did have sad undertones and definitely was a rather touching story, there was just something missing to get the kick that i wanted.

nevertheless i enjoyed both Joel and Callie as characters and i did like their story.

i originally gave this 4 stars (yesterday) but i find it kinda hard to write a review as the details are already slipping from my mind so we're lowering this to 3 as it definitely didn't have that big of an impact on me that it would warrant a four star rating.

some closing SPOILER thoughts though:

i think Callie dying at the end was more a self fulfilling prophecy in a way than anything else. i think seeing Joel and him confirming that yes, today's the day i dreamed you would die, was the direct cause of her heart attack.
had he stayed away from that place on that day or had she not seen him or had he intercepted her a bit before and just asked her out for a coffee chat or something - i'm fairly certain she would have stayed alive.
so him "knowing" that she will die and making her aware of it directly contributed to her actually dying.
just my opinion though.

The Dreams-Man

Joel is not a Spider-Man because he doesn't crawl like a Spider. Since he’s not large nor particularly muscled he’s no Iron-Man either ...

In fact, Joel is … a Dreams-Man!!!

Sounds poetic and sensitive, doesn’t it?!… Cold, cold, cold!… You couldn’t be more wrong!…

He dreams about promotions, pregnancies, haircuts, grocery shopping, home routines, lunches, dinners, sports, etc, etc...

So far, so good! Those are the ones he can handle!…

However, he also dreams about that friend who will crash the car with his baby girl in the back seat, or …about that lady who will die of cancer but is still in the most pure ignorance of the fact, etc, etc...

All this oneiric diversity, although heterogeneous, has something in common: everyone of these dreams is a premonition — Joel invariably dreams of something that will happen in an eventually near future!

How does this strange gift affect his existence?!…
Will he be allowed to enjoy drama-free relationships?! And if he happens to meet the love of his life?! Will he rejoice with that wonderful gift of destiny or simply retreat, fearing that some fate that lies ahead will sneak into his dreams, sending him straight to the abyss?!…

Generalizing:
To what extent do we forget about ourselves to surrender to Love without expecting nothing in return?! Is love unconditional or… some sort of commercial trading?! A Giving always conditioned by some eager Taking?!…

Although the plot doesn’t explore that alley, I couldn't resist letting these questions hang in the air…

Before ending this review, I have to compliment the main characters of this book cos they are simply delightful: Callie and Joel inspire us — they are both human, sweet, respect nature and animals, and… it was an immense pleasure to meet them — 5 shiny stars mainly for them!!! 💖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💖

😜 How to Fix a Heartache 😜

How frustrated would you feel if you finally met the love of your life, but knew for certain that everything would soon fall apart, leaving you devastated and heart broken?! Would you stick to the one you love although she/he’s about to “kick your ass” to the bottom of the well?! Or would you start banging your head against every wall?! After all, if a dog bytes your ankle you immediately forget about a troubling headache, right?! So why shouldn’t you apply the same pattern to your heart?!…

Pity that useful experiment didn’t occur to the main character of this novel. I would definitely appreciate some development!😜
Anyway, this book made me think about an eventually efficient way of dealing with heartache! 😉😜

The Sight of You by Holly Miller. (2020).

Would you choose love if you knew how it would end?
Joel is afraid of the future. Since he was a child he's been haunted by dreams about the people he loves. Visions of what's going to happen - the good and the bad. The only way to prevent them is to not love someone. Callie can't let go of the past. Since her best friend died, she's been lost. She know she needs to be more spontaneous and live a bigger life. She's just struggling to go back to being that person. Joel and Callie both need a reason to start living for today. From the moment they meet it feels like the start of something life-changing. Until Joel has a vision of how it's going to end...

I absolutely loved this story which is the debut novel for the author, and what a fabulous debut it is. It is a contemporary romance love story, with a slight fantasy twist in relation to Joel's prophetic dreams about those he loves. Over the course of the story it was easy to become emotionally attached to Joel and Callie, they were both such likeable personalities. I can tell you that when I finished this book, I had tears pouring down my face which to me is a perfect example of excellent writing that it affected me so much. I found this book to be a unique and beautiful story, and it was extremely moving. I've literally been telling so many people about this book because I can't stop thinking about it.
Overall: an extremely well-written "not your average" love story that I'd highly recommend.

The synopsis was calling my name!
Joel has been having prophetic dreams, what’s going to happen to people he loves, days, weeks, years down the line. Then he meets Callie, they fall in love and later he has a bad dream regarding her...
This emotional and heartbreaking story was my cup of tea.

I wanted to read about Joel and Callie but there were so many friends and relatives involved in details, filling the pages, and my interest was lost.
I thought that these characters wouldn’t suddenly disappear from the forthcoming storyline. Then I thought maybe skip a few paragraphs - but I rarely do, so I dnf it at 10%.

This is one of those books that take a bit of time to get over them and this one is asking for a couple of days… even though this novel is so bittersweet in the end, I want to keep it alive in my head for a little bit longer. Ever since I read The Man Who Didn’t Call I’ve been searching for a novel to match it, a novel that could make me feel the same way and I had to wait until this one to finally find it, The Sight Of You is the answer to my quest. I felt my throat closing up and a single tear (that’s all I’ll admit to!) might have snaked its way out of the corner of my eye. My suffering was silent, much like how this novel presented its secret. Nothing was overdone or written to be sensational or super dramatic, there was in fact just a quiet kind of sadness that you can feel and read throughout the pages.

I love novels about impossible love stories, but is this one impossible? At times I thought so, other times I felt the exact opposite. There’s so much love though, even if people keep fighting it, if they don’t admit it, if they don’t want to fall in love. What are you going to do? The heart wants what it wants and love hurts, every single time. And then it really begins. Joel has dreams about the people he loves. It’s his best kept secret and has messed up his life since he was about 9 years old. So you can’t blame him for not wanting to fall for Callie. It’s not a big surprise how the story develops, the title is pretty much an omen, but that doesn’t matter because it’s just written with the right amount of dazzle.

My heart is so full for this novel, and I think I could talk about it for days. It’s very much a head versus heart kind of novel, and one that makes you think too. How would you react? There’s an important lesson here to live your life and I was happy to see both Joel and Callie do just that. A beautiful novel, very highly recommended! Don’t miss out on this heart-breaking tale!

Let me start off this review by saying that I am in the clear minority on this book. There are a lot of 5 star reviews, but ultimately, this one just wasn't for me.

The beginning started out strong and I was immediately interested in Joel's story and his dreams. But then, well, things just got predictable. I will be the first to admit that Me Before You moved me to tears, so I was really looking forward to this story. There was beautiful women and handsome men and a picture perfect love story where everyone just adores everyone's flaws; you know the type.

I was hoping that there would be more "beef" to the dream story line, other than the fact that Joel is tortured by them. There was just so much potential here and I just felt like there was so much unwritten that would have made this story so much more.

Three and a half stars.
Joel, used to be a vet till circumstances forced him to abandon it. Joel also has a secret. He dreams about people he loves seeing future events sometimes years before they happen. For this reason he mostly cuts himself off from people and especially from falling in love. But then he meets Callie. Despite his best efforts he falls for her fast and deeply. In Callie he experiences love. But then he has a dream that shatters his new found joy. His dream reveals Callie’s death. Is there any way to prevent this happening?
The story is told in alternating chapters from Callie and Joel’s points of view. It is lyrical and engaging. It got me in. But then about midway it started to bog down a little when nothing much seemed to be happened. It picks up again though and then had me turning pages faster. Can Joel and Caitlin be together when he knows that too soon it will end ? Or is love always worth the risk?
Both Callie and Joel are likable characters and it does raise thought provoking questions. Would you want to know when your death will occur if you could or not? Steve, Joel’s friend is also a lovely character as are a couple of the other secondary characters.
While I enjoyed it, I’m not convinced it was as compelling a read as some writers said on the blurb though. However it is an interesting concept and definitely worth reading.

Kaip gyventi, kai sapnuose regi mylimų žmonių ateitį? Kartais visiškai nereikšmingus įvykius, kartais džiaugsmingus, o kartais tokius, kuriems kelią visomis jėgomis norisi užkirsti. Ar laikytumėte tai dovana, ar prakeiksmu? H. Miller knyga būtent tokį siužetą ir pateikia. Pagrindinis veikėjas Džoelis regi pranašiškus sapnus ir dėl to stengiasi nemylėti. Ar bent - neįsimylėti. Iki tol, kol vieną dieną sutinka Kelę..

Natūralu, kad turbūt iškarto tampa aišku, kad laukia meilės istorija. Taip. Ji laukia.

I am wrecked after finishing this one ... very well written. Heartbreaking and uplifting, if that is possible.

It was very emotional and for a debut novel, I was very impressed. Will definitely check out more by this author.

I switched between reading and audible ...

Joel is a loner. Since childhood, he has had dreams that always come true. His dreams are only about those he loves so he keeps his circle small. He avoids romance and has few friends. Some dreams reveal happy news to come, some foresee bad things that can be avoided with some creative warnings. Others show future illnesses and tragedies.

When Joel meets Callie, there is an immediate attraction he tries to resist as Joel fears that if he falls in love, he may dream of something tragic about Callie. Which is exactly what happens. So if you know something bad is going to happen to the person you love, can you stay together and make the best of things even if you are on borrowed time? Joel is heartbroken as he knows her fate. Callie doesn’t want to know what is to come. Would you?

The Sight of You is a moving story of love and sacrifice. It’s a beautiful, well-written book where tears are unavoidable. If you don’t mind getting all weepy at the end of a book, I recommend you go on this journey of two people who have finally found true love but know that it is going to end.

Rated 4.25 stars.

A compelling “what if” question lies at the crux of Holly Miller’s poignant and life-affirming debut which explores the concept of whether it is possible to love someone wholeheartedly given the knowledge of how and when it will end. Despite the quirky scenario the novel is surprisingly thought-provoking and a bittersweet look at selfless love and the importance of living in the moment.

Thirty-five-year-old former vet, Joel Morgan, is difficult to get close to and keeping his guard when he meets a woman is his default position. Since he was seven, sensitive and sincere Joel has had very specific prophetic dreams - good, bad and mundane, with the subjects always the people he loves. Barely able to function and trying everything in a pursuit of a dreamless sleep Joel doesn’t want to fall in love with nature loving barista. Callie Cooper, whose life has been on hold since the death of her best-friend and moves in upstairs. Both emotionally vulnerable but quickly caught up in an all-consuming love affair, the ultimate test comes when Joel dreams of Callie’s death. Whilst Joel knows the date he is unable to foresee what causes Callie’s death and she doesn’t want to know given how it will overshadow her remaining time and the implications it will have for their relationship. But Joel is encumbered by the knowledge of his dream and fervently wants to prevent Callie’s fate, causing him to seriously ask himself if there is a future they can share together..

Narrated in the first person with chapters which alternate between Joel and Callie the story conveys both characters empathy, resilience and compassion in the face of extraordinarily testing circumstances. Despite not being a fan of love stories this one had rather more depth to it than usual and the characters actually felt like they had a meaningful connection and convincing rapport.

Whilst I enjoyed the beginning of the book and the slow dance of flirting and early weeks of a relationship my interest did wane as Joel and Callie settled into their relationship. Part of this was because both characters felt a little too good to be true and aside from Joel’s dream issues, they both felt to flawless to be credible. The entire middle of the novel dragged for me sadly and although Joel’s prophetic dream is made clear in the premise and readers know what is in store. the slightly rambling events were heavily drawn out. Thankfully the ending injects a necessary bit of pace and is played out perfectly in an pleasantly understated manner that unexpectedly warmed my heart.

4.5/ 5 stars

The Sight of You is listed as book one in The Sight of You series (listed as two books). However there is no cliffhanger. And the story ends with a complete ending.

The story takes place in the UK. The book is sort of Contemporary Fiction, mixed with Women's Fiction, mixed with Romance.

The book has two narrators: Joel (35) and Callie (34). Both are 1st person POVs.

The book is divided into parts. The book starts with a very interesting prologue. It is some type of letter and it is from some point in the future.

The book then continues with the most bizarre first chapter. I did not read the book blurb. So I was very confused. But I was extremely interested in what I was reading.

We then find out what Joel's secret is. I personally did not want to know in advance what it was (but it is listed in the book blurb). But it has to do with dreams.

I was completely fascinated by everything in this book to do with dreams. If this had been the sole focus of the book throughout its entirety I would have adored this book. It does play a very important part of the book. However there was definitely a part in the middle that was slower and less focused on it.

This book is emotional, meaningful and significant. There were parts that were absolutely heartbreaking. And there were parts that made me cry.

The last part of the book brought up so many emotions. It made me feel so much.

If you want a book that will only make you feel happy then this book is not for you. But if you want something that will make you think and feel then this is your book. The premise of this book was incredible.

I am absolutely curious to know what book two could be about since this book seemed like it was finished. Will it be about the same people from this book? A next generation? Side characters? I contacted the author and she said that book two was something totally different, not the same characters. So it will be interesting to see how the book is connected to The Sight of You.

Thanks to edelweiss and G.P. Putnam's Sons for allowing me to read this book.

Callie is working at a coffee shop, honoring the dream of her best friend Grace who died in a tragic traffic accident. She enjoys her job but her education and passion has always been for the environment and animal habitats. She is intrigued by Joel who begins to frequent the coffee, always alone.
Joel has chosen to live a life of solitude, afraid to let anyone get too close. He has the unusual ability to see the future of those he loves in his dreams, from little disasters to major life events. Falling in love and sustaining a relationship is a risk he is unwilling to take. But the more Callie and Joel interact, the greater the attraction between them. They are good for one another, encouraging each other to follow their dreams. As Joel begins to let down his guard, their love continues to grow stronger. But when Joel has a prophetic dream about Callie, he knows he must let her go, giving her the opportunity to live a full and complete life filled with adventure and passion. But can he? Can Callie walk away from the man she believes is her soulmate?
Emotional, touching, thoughtful the story pulled at my heartstrings in so many ways. A great debut perfect for fans of JoJo Moyes " Me Before You".
