Sixteenth-century French prophet Nostradamus predicted the Great Fire of London, Napoleon’s conquest, Hitler’s rule, and the atomic bomb. Can the VanOps team keep the old seer’s secrets out of blood-stained hands?
The next installment of the five-time award winning and #1 international bestselling VanOps thriller series is a heart-stopping story of spies, lies, and family ties.
Newly minted black ops officer Maddy Marshall is celebrating the completion of her training when news of a military takeover in the South China Sea shocks the world because it was predicted by a sixteen-year-old French student. When intel chatter spells danger to Avril, the young seer, VanOps Director Bowman assigns Maddy and her twin brother, Will, to protect the girl.
Emotions between the siblings are running hot due to their aunt’s recent stroke, which has reminded them of the childhood accident that scarred both his chin and her heart. Tensions ratchet higher when they arrive at Avril’s home to find the instant social media star has been kidnapped, leaving them with only clenched fists and cryptic clues that lead to a formula encoded on an etched-bronze medallion.
While Taiwan fears an invasion that will set off an apocalyptic chain of events, Maddy and Will race through medieval French towns, Italian cathedrals, and ancient Greek temples attempting to find Avril before their enemies use the girl to discover the Holy Grail of military intelligence. If the team fails, they won’t need a crystal ball to know millions of innocent souls will be destined to join Nostradamus in the afterlife.
The Doomsday Medallion is an electrifying, globe-trotting thriller that delves into humankind’s timeless fascination with prophecy and illuminates the mesmerizing and dangerous potential of a weaponized oracle.

Book Review: The Doomsday Medallion (VanOps #3) by Avanti Centrae Published by Thunder Creek Press, March 8, 2022
★★★★☆ (4.25 Stars) Rave
With her engaging brand of "east meets west and science meets spirituality", author Avanti Centrae takes her readers from the ancient mysteries of the Winter Solstice (Book 2) to the prophetic quatrains of one M. Michel de Nostredame.
The Doomsday Medallion, VanOps Book 3. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, sud de la France.
All hell breaks loose when a sixteen-old-year French social media star predicts the exact moment the People's Liberation Army capture the Pratas, a small chain southwest of Taiwan in the South China Sea, leaving the island nation beleaguered, and the rest of the world on their toes.
The teen may have unleashed an incalculable military weapon.
Avril, a black teenager with a scarred face, is subsequently besieged and threatened by intelligence agencies and mercenaries. It is rumored that her clairvoyance may stem from a secret formula tucked inside a medallion hidden for generations by descendants of the famous seer, Nostradamus.
To the rescue, the vaunted VanOps strike force led by Maddy Marshall, a twenty-something cyber coding expert turned black ops operator, distant member of the Spanish Royal family and of a secret ancient order, and adoptive mother to a precocious refugee child named AJ.
Aikidō (合気道), "The Way of Unifying with Life Energy"
Aikido master Maddy has developed an ability to hurl horrifying balls of lightning with her bare palms (Book 2), using her "Ki" (Qi /Chi), her own life force's "zero-point" energy combined with the superconductivity emitted by a mysterious artifact from space, now identified as lorandite.
As the VanOps team scours through Les Prophéties, Nostradamus' collection of 942 poetic quatrains first published in 1555, they dodge bullets and search caves, vaults and crevices in France, The Netherlands and Italy, all through the Temple of Apollo and the Oracle of Delphi on Mount Parnassus...
-----
I just love how the author creatively incorporates the legendary Japanese anime series "Dragon Ball Z"'s ball of lightning off the palms, with a more scientific, quantum computing approach.
This is one fun and engaging action-thriller that whets curiosity and the intellect, spiced with science, history, languages, ancient rituals and traditions, with a sprinkling of sci-fi, anime and YA themes.
Review based on an advanced reading copy courtesy of Thunder Creek Press and NetGalley.
The publisher's blurb is pretty good for an intro, and no spoilers here. An amazing read! The ongoing characters are back and working twice as hard to achieve their goals. This time they are protecting a current day descendant of Nostradamus who has clearly demonstrated a facility for prophecy/predictions and posted them on TikTok. Not only are the descriptions spot on, but the author's world class imagination brilliantly conveys everything there is to see and feel in this complex and unpredictable thriller! I read the first two VanOps in 2019 and 2020 and loved them, but I did not reread in prep for this one, so I think that it probably does work for stand-alone. I requested and received a free e-book copy from Thunder Creek Press/Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) via NetGalley.
THE DOOMSDAY MEDALLION, Book Three in the VanOps series centered around Maddy Marshall—an Aikido black belt—and her twin brother Will Argones, celebrating Marshalls the completion of her black-ops training news of a military takeover in the South China Sea shock the world because it was predicted by a sixteen-year-old French student, Avril.
‘VanOps Director Bowman assigns Marshall and Argones to protect the girl.’
‘Emotions between the siblings are running hot due to their aunt’s recent stroke, which has reminded them of the childhood accident that scarred both his chin and her heart. Tensions ratchet higher when they arrive at Avril’s home to find the instant social media star has been kidnapped…’
THE DOOMSDAY MEDALLION is my first read of Centrae’s writing; color me surprised to learn the main characters hail from my neck of the woods in Northern California in the Napa Valley region, their younger years spent in Lake Tahoe. Nice!
Now, the characters may reside in Cali, but the VanOps task force in Book Three must travel the globe in this tension-filled Thriller in search of the teenage seer whose been kidnapped whilst deciphering cryptic code that will lead to…
Nope, no spoilers! ;)
I will say if you are a fan of historical fiction, I think you will enjoy reading THE DOOMSDAY MEDALLION, easily read as a stand-alone or in order.
What I love about reading historical fiction, specifically centered around places I’ve never been, is visiting these places online to vicariously experience what the characters are seeing and feeling in that moment, as described by the author.
Thank you, Blackthorn Book Tour and Thunder Creek Press, for providing me with an eBook of THE DOOMSDAY MEDALLION at the request of an honest review.
NOTE: It would be remiss of me not to mention, as a content warning, how much the storyline in the book kept reminding me of the present-day events.

Loved the detailed explanations and it wasn't rushed in any way. The slow build of adrenaline every chapter as the thrilling details the twin's mission made the book 100 times better. If you enjoy a good thriller suspense book I am very sure you won't regret it. I definitely recommend for family and friends.

I did like the Nostradamus bit. 4*.
If you like technothrillers, history, and character-driven storylines that keep you on the edge of your seat, do not miss this book!
Avanti Centrae continues the VanOps series with a heart-pounding, globe-trotting adventure that seamlessly blends action, history and technology. Centrae is a master of the page-turner. It wouldn’t surprise me if Nostradamus himself predicted The Doomsday Medallion would be a bestseller.
If you enjoyed The Lost Power or Solstice Shadows, you'll love The Doomsday Medallion.
Highly recommended for fans of James Rollins, Steve Berry and Daniel Silva.
This fast paced story had me turning pages to find out what happened next. There are secrets to be uncovered, clues to be followed and evil to be thwarted but the VanOps team are good at what they do.
Spoilers: If you are as fascinated as I am with Michel de Nostradamus and his famous prophecies then you should enjoy Avanti Centrae's third Van Ops Thriller, The Doomsday Medallion. Even if you are not and just enjoy a good adventurous treasure hunt sprinkled with plenty of suspense and character development then you still should read The Doomsday Medallion.
Centrae's third go round follows the same pattern as the previous volumes The Lost Power and Solstice Shadows in that it involved three Van Ops agents: Maddy Marshall, a psychic and Aikido instructor, Will Argones, Maddy's twin brother an engineer and expert knife fighter, and Bear Thorenson, Will's friend and Maddy's boyfriend, a seasoned agent with an interest in the humanities particularly history, art, and literature.
In the first volume, The Lost Power, the trio found themselves searching for the Aragon Chasse while on the run from Russian assassins who killed their father and Will's wife. The second volume, Solstice Shadows, found them recovering a stolen star chart that would lead to a great power while encountering treacherous relatives and a looming war.
This time the trio's adventures take them right on the path of Avril, a 16 year old social media sensation who has impressed and frightened many with her spot on predictions. Her latest one involves a military takeover in the South China Sea. This accurate foretelling makes her the target of some suspicious characters who attempt to kidnap Avril and her guardian, Monique. Will, Maddy, and Bear are assigned to watch over the girl who is more powerful and more important than your average psychic. She is a direct descendant of Nostradamus and possesses knowledge on where some of the famed seer's missing quatrains are and what they foretell.
The book doesn't jump around as much as the previous books. Mostly Doomsday Medallion is set in France and Italy. While the settings don't give the Reader's their "Imagination Frequent Flier Miles" that the previous books do, French and Italian art and history are explored more frequently. Key scenes are set near cave paintings and Renaissance art to reveal that strong connection to the past.
The adventure sequences are as exciting as those that can be found in many blockbuster films. There are some pretty tense moments such as when the twins infiltrate a kidnapping attempt on Avril. Many times they are followed by enemies that want to make short work of them. Centrae makes her books extended chase scenes and leaves the Reader with breathless anticipation with every close call that her characters get.
While the adventure is tight, Centrae never loses sight of characterization. In The Lost Power both Maddy and Will share the spotlight. In Solstice Shadows, Maddy gets more attention while this one evens the score by having Will be the main focus. While the twins live active lives full of adventure, Maddy has been able to form a family with Bear and her adopted son, A.J. Will has not been so lucky. He still feels the loss of what might have been after his wife, Maria's death. Here he feels a paternal protective connection with Avril wanting to be the father figure in her life that fate so far has deprived him. Their chapters together are sweet and humorous with the world weary adult and the bright sassy kid arguing with and supporting each other through this adventure.
In fact Avril herself is also a very well written character who easily stands out in this book. She is gifted with this phenomenal inherited power that she doesn't fully understand but still wants to share in her own right.
Like her famous ancestor, she told is uncertain and vague about what she sees and shares her information with others for them to interpret. With Nostradamus it was through writing poetic quatrains. With Avril it's creating TikTok videos. Whatever reaches the masses, am I rite?
However, Avril is also a regular kid who loves her pet gecko, worries about her guardians, sasses authority figures, and makes social media her second home. It would be interesting if the series continues to see her equally involved in future adventures. The ending resolutions seem to foretell this.
The Doomsday Medallion is another great Van Ops adventure. I predict Book Four will be just as good.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Nostradamus was famous for his use of herbs and his predictions. It was believed by some that he discovered a formula that enabled him to see the future. Now Avril, a 16 year old French student descended from Nostradamus has predicted China’s invasion of one of Taiwan’s islands in the South China Sea. Maggie Marshall, a trained agent of VanOps, and her brother Will Argones are assigned to find and protect Avril after intel points to a kidnapping threat. Their assignment becomes a rescue mission when they arrive too late to prevent the attack. From a nearby shop, Avril witnessed the attack, managed to evade the kidnappers and has now gone into hiding. When Maggie goes to consult an expert on Nostradamus she finds Avril arriving to also meet him. Discovered by the kidnappers, it leads to a chase through France.
Avril’s prize possession is a box that once belonged to Nostradamus. As Maggie examines the box she discovers a number of secret compartments that contain cryptic clues to the location of a medallion containing Nostradamus’ formula. Deciphering the clues leads Will, Avril, Maggie and her boyfriend Bear to Belgium, Italy and finally Greece as they explore cathedrals and historic sites to find further clues. If they can find the medallion then thousands of lives may be saved. There are others searching who are ruthless and have the resources needed to track the VanOps team.
Bear is also a VanOps agent who is fascinated by history. He provides historical context and commentary for the various sites that they search. Maggie and Will are twins who are still dealing with guilt over an accident that cost their mother’s life. They are also divided by their beliefs in philosophy and spirituality. It is up to Bear to step in and keep the peace between them as they continue their quest for the medallion. Fans of the puzzles faced by Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon and the high action Sigma Force thrillers of James Rollins will enjoy The Doomsday Medallion and look forward to the next mission for Avanti Centrae’s VanOps unit. I would like to thank NetGalley and Thunder Creek Press for providing this book for my review.
Nostradamus was a world-class prognosticator who encoded many predictions that have proven to be true. Major world powers caught wind of a walnut box left to his offspring that may hold some predictions having world affecting results. A mad scramble has begun to find the box and utilize its’ potential.
Avril is just sixteen when her grandparents tells her about the box. Her mother was tragically lost when she was born. She made a prediction that China would attack and take control of a small island near Taiwan. This happened and now and the major world powers want to know how she could have known! A couple of operatives are sent from the Lake Tahoe, California region to find and protect the young girl. China also sent a very skilled team to capture her.
Avanti Centrae is very adept at building and keeping suspense throughout her story. At her age, Avril’s major fault is that she feels competent enough to do everything on her own. She ditches the people sent to protect her and rushes headlong into a foreign powers’ clutches.
Can Avril be found in time or will she disappear into the dark world of espionage and be forever lost to the world as she knows it?
This saga is very entertaining and will keep most readers flipping pages of the well-plotted, fast-paced technothriller. 5 stars – CE Williams
We received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are his honest opinions.
That’s pretty much the million or should I say billion dollar question that haunts not just us mere mortals but political leaders around the world.
Over the years many have attempted to predict the future, the most famous among them being Nostradamus with many of his predictions coming true.
It is often said that he who knows the future ‘controls’ the world. How far and to what depths would you go?
The Doomsday Medallion by Avanti Centrae is a spine chilling historical adventure that takes you across the world. It is literally a gasp from the past.
The book trails the adventures of twins Will and Maddy, covert operatives working for the mysterious Van Ops Agency as they try to stop a military takeover in the South China Sea. The world is in shock as this unprecedented war has been predicted by a 16 year old girl, Avril. As the brother-sister duo and enemy factions’ race across the world to find the girl who can predict the future, one question is hot on every one’s lips.
How did she do it? Is she the real deal? As the discovery of her lineage comes out, all hands point to Avril being the real deal. The twins and their team are in a race against time as they try to decipher Nostradamus’s clues to the location of a bronze medallion that might hold the ‘power of prophecy’. A prophecy that could start or stop a war.
Rib-smashing action, cryptic clues and lots of ‘masala’ as we in India would call it; make this book an absolute delight. Avanti’s writing style has you hooked from the first word in. The research into the life of Nostradamus is extensive and keeps you hooked and spellbound. The third in the Van Ops series, this book can be read as a standalone as well. A fair warning-though, it will entice you to read the other two books in the series too. I can’t wait to get my hands on them.
Perfect for fans of Dan Brown, Matthew Reilly and Andy McDermott (Like me). The film buff in me thinks this will make a great screen adaptation as well.
So glad I got this RC it was an absolutely adventurous roller-coaster ride. Hope you liked my fair and honest review.
I found this story and writing style to be similar to that of the Da Vinci Code and A. G. Riddle’s Pandemic and Genome. The first scene is some harmless action that introduces you to the characters and gives you a hint about their backstory, and then it dives right into the real action and doesn’t stop until the end. Racing around European countries, finding clues, dodging literal bullets, car chases, and it’s all to unlock secrets by following breadcrumbs that were left long ago.
The idea behind the story is fascinating in itself. Secret messages hidden in compartments of a centuries-old walnut box directly from Nostradamus, descendants of the great seer himself, codes, secret locations… it’s all incredibly mind-blowing. I love going on an adventure like this! And to have to decode messages and find the medallion right now means literal life and death for so many people. It’s a race against time and the hands of evil doers. At the same time, the characters are deeply connected to this mission in a way they don't begin to understand until later.
I suspected a couple of things along the way, and I love the feeling I get when I’m right about something in a novel, but the way it’s revealed is still thrilling. And there were still more shocks that were revealed. I love being able to think back to certain things that were said at the beginning of (or throughout) the story and make the connection at the end and think, "Oh, THAT'S why the author put that in there!"
This story was well written and enjoyable, with lots of historical references and travel (both of which I love!). I recommend it to anyone who loves a good code-breaking, action-filled thriller.
What a compelling story in The Doomsday Medallion by Avanti Centrae. I have become a big fan of this author! This author brings the story to life. The characters had a lot of depth and were very intense and intriguing. This story definitely had its share of action, and thrills. Nothing is ever as it seems, and there are so many twists, and unpredictable results, that it makes for an interesting journey for the reader, and the characters. Chaos and danger threaten lives, and tension definitely is at a high in the story. It is a very well-written story, and I enjoyed it. It’s one of those embraceable stories. It’s definitely un-put-downable! The thrills and intrigue is written clearly. The title drew me in, but the story made me stay. Who wouldn't love a story with the word "doomsday" in it? The Doomsday Medallion is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author.
A first read of this authors books has opened my eyes to an exciting and high octane series. This is book 3 in the VanOps series and whilst it may help to have read the first 2 books it can be read as a stand alone. A complex and well written story it is fast paced and full of suspense.
Briefly, twins Maddison and Will Marshall along with Maddies close friend Bear all work for the secretive VanOps organisation. Their job is to stop foreign operatives from stealing and using items Nostradamus used to make his prophecies. But when a teenage girl in France announces that China is going to invade Taiwanese owned islands, and it comes true, it’s assumed she has the Doomsday medallion. When she is then kidnapped and her grandfather killed by masked intruders VanOps are tasked with finding her and ensuring the girls safety. They also need to find the medallion.
So starts an electrifying escapade around Europe with nail biting moments. On the journey a mystery concerning the twins own family history is finally revealed. Great fun to read and hopefully there is more to come. 4.5⭐️
I'm excited to find a female author of fast-paced, danger-laden, globe-trotting thrillers. Surely there are multiple female authors in this subgenre, but one thinks first of various famous [bestselling] male Thriller authors. THE DOOMSDAY MEDALLION is the third in the exciting VanOps Series, featuring a covert government subset whose agents include meditators and users of a form of ball Lightning energy. So this Series is cutting-edge, and its combination of well-characterized emotions with exciting plot lines and intense villains creates an involving read. In THE DOOMSDAY MEDALLION, Chinese invasion of a South Pacific island very near independent Taiwan is inextricably linked to the search for a lost Nostradamus formula for viewing the future, the goal of a pair of stop-at-nothing villains.
The Doomsday Medallion by Avanti Centrae is a curious combination of historical fact and fiction combined with a spy thriller. The story being part of a series; it follows a group of people who work for an organization known as VanOps. These people have fascinating skills that allow them to achieve their goals on their missions.
While not a huge fan of this genre, I figured i would give it a try with this book and I can say I enjoyed it. This was probably due to the slight fantasy aspect that this series has.
The character of The Doomsday Medallion are well written and their interactions feel realistic, even if they may have some strange powers. The story of the novel is also very good, though I could not help but feel as though it ended a bit abruptly and person some of the loose ends felt a bit forced when tied up.
All in all The Doomsday Medallion is an entertaining book and worth picking up!
As the story is a series of puzzles as the Vansops how the prophecy has a teenager to accurate the attacks of China islands near Taiwan. The young woman leads them on a wild chase as she wants to find the medallion which they believe has the capability the prophecy made by Nostradamus make in the 1200s. A Chinese to determine how the girl made the accurate action description of the Chinese raids. Most of the story is studies of quatrains found in the Nostradamus books. Most of the solving of the mysterious quatrains drags on for most of the book. The problems are difficult, but even as they are solved, the ending is not what had been understand. I found a great of history, but the education was more value than the ending.
Another winning effort by Avanti Centrae! The action continues from where it left off in her first two novels. It is great to see the main characters develop and mature as this story unfolds. This is yet another page turner with lots of adventure, action and twists.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thunder Creek Press who provided me with a copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This was a fun action packed thriller! The author did a great job blending so many different backgrounds and elements. Science, history, and traditions, with a touch of sci-fi and anime. I haven't read the other books in the series but I didn't feel like I was missing anything. The characters Maddie, Bear and Will are wonderful! Great read!
Thank you Blackthorn Book Tours and Avanti Centrae for sharing this book with me!
Maddie, Will and Bear find themselves on a new mission to find out if a young girl in France can really predict the future and to endeavor to stop the invasion of Taiwan by China. This mission takes them all over Europe facing danger everywhere as they race to uncover the secrets of Nostradamus whilst keeping his descendant alive. Its exciting and action pact and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Have no idea how to explain how good this book is without giving spoilers. Strongly encourage anyone who likes mystery/thrillers with an overseas twist to try this book.
Although the book stated off slow, the book was amazing and incredible to read plots in this book gives lots of thrilling action. I highly recommend it Will read again
Centrae has given readers another action packed novel. I like how she combines history, science, and legend into an engaging story. The VanOps characters are a mixed bag. Some have special abilities, like Maddy throwing fire balls. While the ability might seem like science fiction, Centrae gives a reasonable scientific explanation. Other characters appear to be quite normal, even with an irritating habit of making jokes in the midst of a serious time.
I like the central aspect of the plot of powerful people wanting the ability to predict the future. We learn quite a bit about Nostradamus when one of his descendants, a teen, hits the mark in one of her many predictions. The ultimate lesson learned from the chase for Nostradamus' secret is surprising and enlightening.
There is lots of travel by the Van Ops team, from one end of Europe to the other. Part of my enjoyment of novels by Centrae is all the locations involved. The action in the novel is periodic with sections of travel and historical investigation in between. I really appreciate Centrae's historical note at the end, indicating fact and fiction.
This is another engaging and informative novel in the series.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Finished reading Doomsday Medallion by Avanti Centrea. This is a VanOps thriller and the third book in the VanOps thriller series.
Even though I didn't read the first two, I was able to enjoy this one as a stand alone book.
It starts with the story of twins Will and Maddy along with Bear, who are VanOps agents, an organization that works with the US government on top secret missions. They are made aware that China is about to invade Taiwaneese owned islands and this prediction was made by a french teenager, Avril, on social media, right before the invasion. They are also made aware of Nostradamus predictions in the past and how people in today's world are still looking for his walnut box that he passed down to his progeny and hence this prediction made by this teanager can put her life in danger. All this leads to VanOps team's adventure in Europe where they are trying to protect Avril and at the same time uncovering mysteries of the past.
This was a fast paced story full of suspense and thriller. I really enjoyed reading it.
I was granted an ebook copy of this book and then offered an audio - since I’m a huge fan of audiobooks I jumped at the chance! Since I chose to go the audio route I’m late posting, but better late than never, right?
First off - the narrator is absolutely everything. I was hooked immediately just on his voice. Perfection. Great choice, especially for the type of book.
This book has a ton of short chapters. I know this is a factor for some people on liking books - so if you like more shorter chapters…this one has them!
This is an interesting book! It’s book 3, and I have not read the first two however other than a little bit of confusion about some things, this works to start with. I did eventually catch up on my confusion and figure it out. Black ops is an interesting take to follow. It definitely gives me Fox and O’Hare vibes. It’s not the same, not at all, but the vibes are there….possibly because it’s the same narrator.
Overall, I listened to this in a weekend. I was sucked in, wanting to know what happened. I’m intrigued enough to check out the rest of the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Know thyself, know others. You’re a soul and so are others.
A deadly prediction spells danger for its teller, and so the countdown begins. Brother and sister are assigned to protect the prophet, but can they concentrate on the matter at hand as their emotions threaten to tear them apart? Now the prophet has been kidnapped, only clues to her whereabouts remain. The author weaves a clever novel of intrigue, mystery and adventure in Doomsday Medallion. It is the perfect story for fans of Dan Brown and Matthew Reilly, as it has the power to transport the reader to distant tropical lands, and plains teeming with mystery. The characters are engaging and bursting with vitality. A finely embroidered tale, mixing fact, philosophy and non-stop action. I loved it and so I award the novel 5 stars. Thank you, Avanti Centrae, for sharing your work with the Book Dragon.
Andrew Bell, Official Reviewer of Audio Fiction of the Book Dragon.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Doomsday Medallion is the third book in the Van Ops series.
Will, Maddy, and Bear must keep Avril safe. If they fail, the secret of Nostradamus' accurate predictions will fall into powerful hands - and the abuse of that power can only have catastrophic results.
Avanti Centrae takes readers on a hazardous journey with explosive action and a mind-blowing plot.
