The Stasis Stories #7

The Mistress of Space-Time

Rate this book
This hard Sci-Fi novel is the seventh book in the “Stasis Stories,” a series of optimistic tales of technological innovation in the near future. This one is about Kaem Seba’s daughter, Zaii, a young woman who, like her father, has extraordinary math talents.
Eager to do her part in the war against the aliens from Epsilon Eridani, she becomes a Space Force ROTC cadet. Soon after that, she’s proving to be a superb young officer. However, as she studies potential warfighting strategies that might be used against the Eridanis, she realizes that the defenders of Sol system have a problem.
The humans won the first battle against the Eridanis by using the technical advantage afforded by the invulnerability of stasis. But, the Eridanis jump and biowarfare technology could easily allow them to wipe out the human race on Earth and thus win the war.
Offered the opportunity, she sets out to study the wreckage of the Eridani ships from the first battle. She hopes to figure out how jump works, thus appropriating that technology for human use and evening the playing field.
Can she figure this out in time to keep the Eridanis from exterminating homo sapiens?
It turns out to be a lot harder than she’d hoped; and to require help from someone she tries to avoid asking…

I was born on the island of Cyprus where my dad was employed as a mining engineer. We moved to the Philippines (more mining) when I was three and then to Arizona when I was 9. I went to med school at the University of Arizona and did a residency in Orthopaedics at the University of Kansas. I taught Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until I retired in 2017.

I've always loved science fiction and it's been great fun getting to write some. I also like music and have a little home recording studio. You can read more, listen to some music and look at some of my art, at http://laury.dahners.com/ if you like.

Great new installment in the Stasis-Series. But I'd recommend to anyone at least to read Book 6 before starting with this one.

bad writer, no cookie

Most of this is fine. I mean, the MC (2Lt Vera) is incredibly OverPowered, to an almost super-human extent, removing a lot of conflict and drama. But the narrative flows pretty well and most of the challenges don’t push her physical abilities, so it’s not difficult to look past.

BUT.

In chapter 5, BGEN Asic sends a video message to 2LT Vera and essentially criticizes decisions of the general’s superior. Huge no-no. Entirely unprofessional and should directly result in Asic’s removal from service via court martial. ‘Prejudicial to good order and discipline’ is the charge.

Is Asic correct? Yes. Should she have that conversation with a junior officer? Absolutely NOT. To actually record those words? Moronic.

I know some people will disagree and think I am being too particular in a science fiction novel. But I feel if you set things in a near future, then certain things need to fit. Military services have rules for conduct that shouldn’t be idly thrown aside.

I’m going to continue reading.

Later: a more correct senior-subordinate relationship appears later, though the general needs to be a bit more pointed and cold.

The problem I had in chapter 5 still is bothersome. A senior officer simply cannot even obliquely criticize other officers in front of such a junior officer. General Ramirez may *be* wrong, but it should not be stated as such by another general to a boot lieutenant.

I’m still probably going to buy the next book/series Mr Dahners releases. One of the best *hard* SF writers around.

5 We're On The Tiger; By God, We've Got To Ride It! Stars

The Mistress of Space-Time is the seventh book in The Stasis Stories series by Laurence Dahners.

I'm sad it's over! *long wail into the abyss* This has been an exhilarating journey. Starting from Kaem inventing Stade, to facing roadblocks in making it open for all humans to utilize, to fighting a war against an alien invader. Dahners achieved so many of my subconscious checkmarks for literature. Within Sci-Fi humanity is usually, and rightfully so, depicted as the aggressor going to extremes in their pursuit of malicious intentions. I appreciate that we, even fictionally, weren't prepresented in that manner at least once.

Zaii Vera was a character I knew I would adore from the moment she saved Shelle. Her command presence and unparalleled ingenuity were going to ferry her to great heights. That she was both capable of standing up for herself, and other women, without being depicted as a bitch is simply icing on the cake. There were numerous similarities between her and Seba, to the betterment of the story itself.

If there was a spin-off series, I would read it immediately. This world was enlightening, and enjoyable to peruse. For the human race to advance so much, win against our basest natures, and manage to Unite as a whole is unbelievable. I'm thankful that Laurence Dahners could bring this future to fruition, even if it's very unlikely to occur realistically.

Refreshing

Sad to some degree but this book is very refreshing. Many of the characters we’ve come to know and love throughout the series don’t make an appearance but that is to be expected because time has simply progressed they simply are the main characters anymore. We get to experience learning and understanding new characters and their motivations and the mechanisms behind their behavior. The story overall is great it’s what we’ve all come to expect a main character who has stellar capabilities and you get to see them employed on a regular basis. Aside cast of characters who help flush out the story and well more that you’ll love but I don’t want to spoil anything.

No complaints about this book whatsoever. I do have a question for the author we would love to see some more books in your other series. Hypos Family, Bone Setter, Stasis, and El are some of the ones I live. This new series well it’s not new anymore knocked me off my feet but still want to see some of those old series finished out. They had great characters I’d love to get back to explore more of that universe as well. Keep up the good work love the books.

Dahners, Laurence E. The Mistress of Space-Time. Stasis No. 7. Kindle, 2021.
Laurence Dahners’ Stasis stories began with the invention of a stasis field by a young man named Kaem Seba. Now, in The Mistress of Space-Time, Kaem’s daughter Zaii is a lieutenant in the newly established space force. Her team is charged with developing tactics and technology to defeat a second attack by an alien invasion force intent on using a bioweapon to eradicate humanity and leave the Earth free for colonization. Fortunately, Zaii is just as smart as her dad. She morphs her dad’s stasis field into an interstellar jump drive. The action of the story moves along nicely and the angst of Zaii’s coming-of-age story is muted by the novel’s more intellectual concerns. Occasionally, we also get to look at things from the aliens’ perspective, which adds to the fun. Dahners is a writer who understands his talent and its limits. If you like semi-hard science fiction that takes an idea and stretches it, you will probably like Dahners’ work as well. 4 stars.

I somehow missed that Deep Space - Hidden Terror and The Mistress of Space-Time, the 6th and 7th books in Laurence E Dahners’ The Stasis Stories series had come out. A bit bummed that I could’ve gotten to these gems sooner but the silver lining is that even though there’s not a real cliffhanger, these books really are a set and ideal to read (or in my case binge) one after another. Kaem Seba and his equally brilliant and talented daughter Zaii (who is mostly a high schooler and young adult now) are the true stars of these sets, with a many story line focusing on handling an alien invasion (though the side stories are totally fun too). Great speculative science (the wonders of controlling a degree of time and space), great action and character development. Totally wonderful fun. These books were really fantastic, and easy to highly recommend.

It's a very long time since I was so bereft to come to the end of a series. They were all good, but book 7 has a new lead character — albeit one related to the previous lead character — and she is even more interesting and compelling than anyone in the first six books.

[minor spoiler]

When I got to the end of The Mistress of Space-Time, it became clear that various storylines were being neatly wrapped up, and there would be no need to take the series further. Possibly the only time I have been more upset in relation my reading, was when we learned that Iain M Banks had terminal cancer. To put some perspective on this, I have read Iain's Culture books three or four times now, and I am not so sure that the Stasis books will get reread, but so long as Laurence E. Dahners is with us, I will live in hope of more Stasis books.

Another good space hero adventure

I've been following this entire series and this book lives up to the previous ones. The hero being a woman is a fun, I do have granddaughters after all and have a great desire to see them thrive. But this is good, well written fiction that keeps my mind engaged as Vera stays way ahead of me as well as all the other characters in the book. There are a lot of aspects of science, battles, and relationships going on at once and the characters all set high standards which is a nice switch from the daily news around me. As usual, I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting Well done Mr. Dahners!

A mind boggling good end to an awesome series!

Lovers of military space warfare stories rejoice, this book will blow you away! Not to mention it will make your whole day, possibly your whole week or even your whole month. Author Laurence Dahmer's is scary good at the whole enchilada: plot, action, and characters. His "what if" high tech science fiction stories are so good that they will blow you away! Read this series and this book now, you WILL be sooo glad that you did. Guaranteed! :)

Awesome Series! Like old school Sci-fi at its best.

I need to go back and revive all the booked in this series...I honestly got so deeply into reading the books I read them one after another without break. The luxury of retirement. I would recommend this series to anyone who love to read any kind of book not just Sci-fi.

Dahners is like a cross between Michael Crichton and Isaac Asimov.

WOW!

Awesome Series

This science in the Fiction explores what if we could use stasis as a material. Also it tells the tail of a minority young man whom people dismisses until he creates a fictional boss. It sucks because it is true. In this book his daughter reverse engineer alien jump drives.

The Mistress of Space-Time

I have read all of his books. All have been so well written that I could hardly wait to read the next one. My only complaint is that he does not write new books as fast as I would like. Will not truly complain as long as the quality of his books remains so high.

Excellent story

Another hit my opinion. I always look forward to your new books coming out. To me there are page Turner always looking for how the technology is going to advance to help them in time. Keep writing novels and I'll keep buying them. I've read all your books multiple times except for 6 bit, not really into short stories.

I waited until the Stasis Book#7 was available at midnight then read it till I finished it in one sitting! All I can say is "Wow! Another fantastic book and one of your best so far." This is a very satisfying conclusion to the Epsilon Eridani war and possibly a fitting end to the The Stasis Stories as well.

Hope there will be more novels in the series!!

Once again Laurence Dahners knocks it out of the park! Perhaps space opera spend offs to the series featuring Zaii Vera? One can only hope! My problem with Dahners is that there's only one Laurence Dahner! He has a number of ongoing series which begs continuations!

Amazingly wonderful

I have loved every single book I've ever read by Laurence Dahners. And unfortunately I've read them all by this point and have to wait for him to write me more. But every one has been a delight to read. Every. Single. One. So I hope he writes quickly.

Well. Good

My complaint is the dramatic events seem to form patterns, from series to series. Otherwise, a pretty good read. Though my favorite is still Ell

Fast paced action with astoundingly well written sequences. Main character is way over powered but that's what I love. Another winner from Dahners

Most excellent story! Pacing, plot, characters, just a good read. It would be very nice for humans to have someone as smart as her on our side. A read for most ages.

Satisfying despite having no real sense of risk/challenge. Zaii seems to be the Wesley Crusher of Earth's space navy. I'm okay with that.

Great story

Loved it. Yes, the heroine is too perfect, but that's just the way Laurence Dahners' stories are.
I like it when the good guys win. I like when we're the good guys.
