Joshua Slocum was the first man ever to sail around the world single-handedly and this is his account of his 3 years and 2 months on his trusted sloop “Spray” which kept him on course against all odds. In fact, he and the “Spray” were so perfectly attuned that, though alone, he found himself with plenty of time on his hands for sleeping, cooking, singing and reading for hours on end.
Although I don’t know the first thing about sailing and the jargon went right over my head this was a very enjoyable and interesting read describing in a light-hearted way with touches of Mark Twainish humour his experiences with waves, wind and weather and the people he meets in the various bustling ports and, not as amicably, in the harsh, lonely places of Tierra del Fuego. He makes clear that his feat was not a picnic in the park, yet for him it was the thrilling, exhilarating adventure of a lifetime.
Fascinating true story. The author truly lives through spectacular events at every page, the story is in all almost to eventful to be true, but for all I know he spoke the truth. He really meets some interesting people and I am amazed by the different places and people that existed (exists) all around the seas. A truly spectacular adventure written in a sympathetic and glad way, like a saga. Written by a fascinating and excentric man. A pleasant read.
