Renata: My sweet personality is one of my best attributes. At least, that’s what I thought until my friends staged an intervention on my behalf and demanded I attend racial sensitivity training. What? The suggestion filled me with special, individually wrapped curse words for each of them…until I met Rook.
Rook: My caring and unselfish ways were often complimented. I assumed the praise was genuine, until my best friend of thirty years called me a “privileged prick” and suggested a therapist for my racial sensitivity issues. What issues? I was prepared to tell him what he could do with his suggestion…until I met Renata.

KETA KENDRIC did the THANG with this novella!! Talking about racial sensitivity is a complex topic to tackle, but Keta does it SUPERBLY in under two hours with this novella. Keta makes you think about your actions and starts a conversation between her characters and yourself.

Ill be honest I couldn't finish this book . comparing a black person prejudice with a white person who is racist ,doesn't make sense. Its like comparing a water gun to the atom bomb..
Renata and Rook's story is one that excites, informs, and challenges you. If you didnt examine your self and then fan yourself, I wonder if we read the same book. Keta Kendric never disappoints, but covering this subject matter while building crazy chemistry and developing such characters in a novella is miraculous. This is not just an lunchtime read but a necessity in acknowledging and overcoming biases. Perfectly crafted.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall when Keta is plotting her books! This woman’s mind is amazing. I loved the concept. The characters were amazing and the cake Spicy!!! 💜💜💜
What in “What Would You Do” is going on here!!? Lol
honestly, great social commentary however the romance was a bit unrealistic and rushed but then this is also a novella so it was tight on time and word count 😬
What a fun novella! Let's Kendric has a knack for writing steamy romances and this was no exception! I loved this couple! Also, the humor in the book was pretty good too. A decent balance of serious topics ( each character was attempting to correct their racial biases) to some steamy love scenes to making you crack up! Enjoyable read!
I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't raised with preconceived notions about Caucasian people. My neighborhood wasn't filled with them, my school had enough for me to know they existed, my father didn't believe in "Say It Loud I'm Black And I'm Proud".
Bottom line we inhabited a neighborhood where the whites had moved out which left a decent place to grow up in.
I've been attracted to all races of men in my lifetime, so as far as that goes I'm solid.
This story was serious, funny and fun I think the world could use a lot of this type of therapy. I just wish this could have been a full book that took us to Rook's and Renata's real happily ever after... you know marriage and children.
This lifetime of programming resulted in Renata's friends and Rook's partner to do an intervention so they can see the error of their insensitive ways so far as race was concerned. After being coupled to work together on projects scheduled by Dr. Westbrook at Revelations, they slowly began to see themselves mirrored in the people they interacted with. The scales of blindness were removed from their eyes which opened them to see each other with a fresh perspective and found that they were thoroughly attracted to each other.
Rook knew that she was everything he was looking for in a woman, as the women he'd previously dated were only looking at his financial status. But Renata's nosey neighbor threw a bomb on their newly blossoming relationship when he posted a picture on social media of Rook enjoying Renata's spice cake. They were hoping no one would recognize them but everyone who knew them did. It was so funny how Rook's father and Renata's mother reacted to the news. Renata's mother was the typical black mother worrying about her child. You'd think that her daughter was a teenager instead of a 38 yr old grown widow.
I enjoyed reading this story. Rook learned a lot about what Renata had to endure in her life. Renata learned to put away her prejudice to see Rook as a man she was highly attracted to, regardless of what she was taught. All it took was for Rook to have a slice of Renata's spice cake and he wanted the whole darn cake. He couldn't get enough.
Alright now! This was an eye-opening read, that made you take a deep dive into yourself, to see what if any prejudices you may have. The stares, frowns, and glares that we sometimes give off to others, just because we "assume" something about them, due to their appearance or a certain behavior. What does this say about us? Is it learned behavior from our life experiences, or something taught or preached in our upbringing? Rook and Renata are both sent to sensitivity training by their friends, due to their attitudes and behaviors toward people unlike themselves. At first, I thought that these two would not get along, but was pleasantly surprised by how serious they both were about the process. The experiments were life changing for both of them, and had them really thinking about the way they treated people in the past. All the while, the sparks are flying and chemistry is heating up. Never, ever before this training would either of them have thought to date outside of their race. However, Rook and Renata spending time together, find that they have more similarities than differences. That damn messy Mandy oh lawd! I hollered at Renata's mother and them comments she made about her being with Rook! Loved seeing two flawed people try to right their wrongs, and found something good out of it; hot ginger tea and spice cake! 😂 Damn good read! 👍👍👍
I haven't laughed this loud and hard in...whew. Although this story has triggering situations, this story was insightful and educational from several point's of view. Although this was a quick, but thoughtful read, it still packed a punch. Rook and Renata each were volun-told to get racial sensitivity training by their friends from an exclusive program called Revelations. The program put them in socially interactive situations to highlight their learned prejudices to help them identify their biases and help them to overcome them. They were matched during the program and through getting to know and understand each other's cultural and social norms, they became attracted to each other. Their one night of unbridled sex was captured on camera by a nosy neighbor who posted a picture to social media. Both Renata and Rook's parents saw the post and shenanigans ensue.
Renata's Mama and aunt are no joke when roasting Took about his intentions. The last chapter gave me LIFE! I loved this 5 star story and I highly recommend it to everyone. This is my first adventure with Ms. Kendric, and I look to reading more of her stories in the future.
This book was a real eye-opener. Rook and Renata were each a hot mess due to their homegrown prejudices about other races. Their friends sent both to "Revelations" to get clarity and their world view changed. I loved and appreciated this book on so many levels!! Not only did Ms. Kendric give us a lesson on how internal homegrown prejudices not only shape a person's world view, but it can also block you from experiencing happiness with someone that might not be from your own race and culture. Renata and Rook were such a joy to read. They not only conquered their prejudices, but they found love with each other along the way. And that "Spice Cake" dessert? That was priceless!! I had no CLUE what that was. And how is Mess Mandy always in other ppls business with her fine a$$ man? That woman always seems to be spilling someone else's tea. Keta Kendric definitely nailed it with this book!! Well worth 5⭐'s
I need to pause for a moment because this book has left me at a loss for words. Spice cake is everything that I thought it would be. It is definitely spicy, explosive and leaves me wanting more of Rook and Renata. The story is unique and deals with sensitive issues concerning racism and prejudice. Spice Cake is an interracial romance that leaves you in awe. Both Rook and Renata have similar backgrounds, which shaped the way they thought about the other race. I absolutely enjoyed reading this book, and the story is phenomenal. Yes, it is a quick read, but there is a great build-up, and the characters have attitude and sass. The description, setting and plot made this story quite entertaining and engaging.
I love the lunchtime chronicles and 8 am behind quite a few of them, but when this popped up on Unique Words, LLC as a recommendation it happened at the right time. Keta Kendric didn't rush making me feel like I had a lunchtime quickie. She let us know the characters Renata and Rook as they were to know each other while working thru their own prejudices. Why was I surprised that messy Mandy popped up because you can't do lunchtime without her. I wold give Keta extra stars if I could for the pop p picture on Mandy's page but especially the restaurant scene when Renata mama and aunt showed up. I wanted more but when I read the last sentence it was the icing on the cake
This was a quick read that delved into our own prejudices that we may or may not know about. I appreciated how mature Keta Kendric had Renata and Rook because it gave the book substance. I liked how Renata and Rook both took their assignments seriously and how they were able to recognize their own prejudices. This book also made you take a look at yourself and see if you had any underlying prejudices that you need to work through and hopefully the courage to resolve them. A great read, even with the meddling momma and sneaky picture taking neighbor.
Short read with a big impact. Renata and Rook had a similar problem when it came to interacting with other opposite race. An intervention by friends lead them both to the same place. Intervention outing or social experiments by the doctor lead the two of them to a budding friendship and understanding of each other’s race. There was a bit of an education in this short read. Thank you to Jeta for breaking it down.
Lunchtime has not been so enlightening in such a short time. And Room was just plain wrong for his desert recommendation to Renata’s mother and aunt.
he was too much. cool, calm, and collected. when they were racially profiled, he just let it roll off his back. he didn't care he expressed to her several times that he was attracted to her and wanted her. loved how he told her that she was going to enjoy it enough to make her beg him to move in. he was too much. wined and dined mom and auntie and invited them to a warm piece of spice cake because he had just had some 3 days ago. and he loved it. they both got over their racial issues.
Ms. Keta. The exchange between Rook & the homeless vet was one of my favorites. Seeing people for who they are instead of whom we think they are was a powerful message. Thank you for the whole set-up of this story. While the dessert was as hot and sexy as I’ve come to expect from you, I gotta say the whole meal was utterly delicious and I was definitely there for it. 💜
Lessons learned that it doesn't matter if you're black or white, you can both be racially insensitive and prejudiced as Renata and Rook found out and acknowledged about themselves. Which in turn, allowed them to accept and act on the growing attraction between them that led to one of the hottest sex sciences and the hilarious aftermath that resulted from it. Her Mom and Aunt were priceless but Rook got the last laugh. Spice Cake indeed!😂😂😂
This was a very entertaining book and I truly enjoyed it! Loved the chemistry between Rook and Renata it was smoking hot 🔥! There was some very prevalent issues covered and the way they were introduced was interesting . The mama and Aunt was true to life I highly recommend this book to my fellow romance readers you will not be disappointed. I just wish it was a little longer .
This book came at you from a different prospective. It made you think while introducing you to two amazing people. Rook and Renata made an awesome 😎 couple. Their experiences taught them to talk and be openminded. Sadly, no amount of experience prepares you for the reactions of the elderly and family. Like always, I wanted more by the end. Happy reading!
I rated this a 5S+ because of the overall content and topic. The romance was cute but the story was much more valid. At least it was for me. Racism is a word that has been so misused and mistreated. The world will never conquer Racism, however, that does not mean we cannot live together better. But in order to do so,,, people (individually & all races) must look within themselves and make the necessary changes. And,,, Stop placing the blame elsewhere.
Rook and Renata are both very prejudiced towards other races and don’t think nothing of it because to them they are acting normal. That is until their friends taking intervention measures, pointing out their poor behavior and send them to a program , a rehabilitation of sorts … Well, Rook couldn’t help been attracted to beautiful Renata and the attraction wasn’t one sided. Find out what happened by getting your own copy!
This book will make you take a long look in the mirror and ask yourself do you like what you see inside. Rook and Renata both had to do this after being confronted by their friends about their behavior. They didn't like what they saw but was glad they were able to do something about it.
Spice Cake is definitely a must read. This book had me cackling out loud. I loved ALL the characters. Mr. Story was something else. I loved how Renata and Rook had to go through racial sensitivity training and the different exercises they had to do. I loved the book!!
Rook and Renata were awesome! I easily related to Renata. I've been her long ago. I enjoyed watching her open up to new cultures and situations. Rook was an instant book boyfriend for me. I really enjoyed the assignments from Dr. Westmore and want a book about the doctor for some reason. Keta did a bomb job!!
Loved the start, middle and finish of this short story. They were both the same with their prejudices and it was lovely seeing them develop into more tolerant and less judgmental. A wonderful story that I'd like to read more about. Perfect lunchtime chronicle.
Rook and Renata have major social problems which need to be addressed. Both have friends with their best interest at heart. Will these two acknowledge their home grown problems and break these long established habits? This book was deep, makes you really think. Another well written KK book. LOL embarrassingly good.
I laughed this whole book. When I tell you Rook and Renata gave me life. Whew Keta did the thing with this one. This was a great lesson for both of them to learn including her mama and aunt. Rook said his favorite dessert is Spice Cake. Alright now so is they together together or what? Loved it!
WHere can you get a dose of open your eyes to your own prejudices and being open to romance? Lunch Chronicles! The situations that the H and h were put in made me stop and think. Totally unexpected, and still entertaining! Another hit ! Looking forward to the next story. Great job.
A great storyline. The story was interesting, thought provoking and romantic. I would not have expected less from Ms. Kendric. I just wish there was more of an ending. It only served to whet my appetite. More than worth the read. The lesson alone was very meaningful.
