Favorite Quotes:

Before she could move out of the way, Piers bent down, slid his arm around her waist and kissed her cheek, dangerously close to her mouth. His lips were warm and moist, and she tried to repress a gasp as she caught the whiff of beer, musky aftershave and sweaty socks that always seemed to cling to him.

‘We’re getting too old for dealing with overexcited children all day,’ her granddad replied. ‘Last time I dressed up as Santa… and I’m not even mentioning the fake beard that gave me a rash for days afterwards.’ ‘I fell asleep in the grotto and my snoring scared the children away,’ David Fern added, laughing.

‘Do you know what charms my husband gave me to thank me for the hard time I had giving birth to his three sons?’ Tim’s cheekbones flushed bright red. ‘It was a joke, Rachel…and I’m a farmer after all.’ Oblivious, Rachel carried on, ‘He bought me a sheep, a tractor and a cow! If he thinks that’s an incentive for me to produce baby number four, he is seriously mistaken.’

The shop and restaurant were boarded up, and padlocks and chains hung from the doors to the shower blocks and launderette. There was no sign of life in the office either. All that was needed to complete the desolate décor was tumbleweed blowing about and whining harmonica of a Spaghetti Western soundtrack.

My Review:

I am enamored with Marie Laval’s breezy yet absorbing writing style and creative and amusingly descriptive storytelling. Her latest delightful tale kept me well entertained and had a bit of everything; an injured helicopter pilot with PTSD nightmares staying in the manor of the absent yet wealthiest family, a comedy competition, elder abuse, holiday festivities, a sudden rash of crime in the previously safe village, family issues, a blossoming romance, sexual harassment in the workplace, ghost sightings, and a century-old mystery to solve. I adored the main characters, especially the sweet and naïve Bluebell house cleaner Cassie, who took excellent care of her clients well beyond their cleaning needs and may well have used a bit of fairy magic during her dusting. The fairy riding a feather duster painted on the side of her van brought a smile to my face every time it was mentioned, and her clever grandfather was a treasure.

Cassie Bell owned Bluebell Cleaning after her mother retired from the business, and she enjoyed nothing better than making her clients smile. She cleaned, cooked, handed out corny jokes from her grandad and generally changed moods from sad to happy. But when Cassie met Belthorn Manor’s new resident, Stefan Lambert, an army helicopter pilot who’d been badly injured while on duty and needed a quiet place to recuperate, she was shocked at his grumpy manner and rudeness. But she was doing her job and was determined to change his attitude with Christmas fast approaching.

With her grandad’s forgetfulness, a burglar in the area, issues from the past – Cassie wondered if there would be any Christmas magic this year. Could she stiffen her spine and sort it all before the big day? Could she put some cheer into Stefan’s life?

Bluebell’s Christmas Magic by Marie Laval is a sweet Christmas tale that includes good guys and bad, mischievous children, Santa, a wedding and a sparkly cleaning lady trying to mend a slightly broken man. A delightful read which I recommend.

With thanks to Choc Lit Publishing for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Perfect! That’s it, that is all I can say about this book, it really is perfect. I supposed I really should make an effort and actually write more to this review then just one word, but really when you have a book that is perfection, what more is there to say? I suppose I could lament about the beauty of the words and the originality and charming story and absolutely gorgeous hero and fabulous heroine, but once I start talking about this book, I may not be able to stop myself.

Oh, Stefan! My Gawd, how much do I love this man? I don’t think I can fully say how much I love this man… I need a gif!

He'S So Pretty I Want To Cry GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

He is THE perfect hero – in my eyes – handsome, brooding, protective, growling, glorious eyes …and other parts of his anatomy 😉 *clears throat, and thinks of something else* Anyone who knows me and who reads my reviews, will probably have an idea about Stefan and why I love him so much, I do love a tortured, fragile soul, a proud man who has been through his own hell and now a bit of a grouch as he tries to lock himself away instead of moving forward – plus he owns a uniform and he has the most seductive French accent – yep it’s true I am that shallow 😉

What I love about this and like all of Ms Laval’s stories, is that there is so much more hidden within the story then what first appears, there is more going on within this magical tale than just a gorgeous festive love story, there is a mystery or two that you become completely drawn into plus the touch of a little supernatural that weaves itself so beautifully through the background of the story. This is what Ms Laval does better than any other author, the way she so effortlessly entwines romance, mystery with the mistiness of magic is always so perfect.

Set in the Lake District, Cassie Bell is a busy little bee not only does she own the local Bluebell Cleaning business but with living with her grandfather she is practically his carer and she does worry about his lapses in memory. Bluebell Cleaning has been hired by the owner of the local Manor; Belthorn House to clean the house and look after it’s new guest and friend of the owner Charles. Stefan Lambert, French Army Helicopter pilot is there to recover from the accident that has left him injured and scarred, not just physically but he is wounded psychologically too as he suffers from nightmares about what happens to him.

Stefan wants nothing more than to be left alone to try and forget what had happened to him, hide himself away from the worlds and pitying eyes, he thinks that a desolate manor in the middle of the Lake’s would be perfect, a house that rather reflects his dire and brooding mood, only he doesn’t count on the chirpy, talkative, energetic dungaree wearing cleaner who refuses to let him wallow, she is insistent that he does exactly what he doesn’t want to and that is to start living instead of sinking into the gloom and darkness of his own mind.

I love their first meeting, her thinking him an intruder and she brandishes a feather duster at this huge, growling bear of a man who wants nothing more than to take his pain relief and be left in peace. The banter between them is brilliant, fun, witty, real, it’s laced with happiness and sadness, their different personalities just bounce off each other, Cassie and Stefan are proof that opposites do attract. I love her energy, the way she can never sit still for more than five minutes, the constant chatter even when she has nothing to say, she reminds me of myself…now I just need to find myself a brooding Frenchman who rather resembles Heathcliffe.

I do love Marie Laval’s work, she is easily one of my favourite authors as soon as I know that there is a new book of hers out there in the world, I need to read it, she is an unbelievably gifted storyteller who never disappoints, this one may be my favourite yet….but, I do say that with every one of her books 🙂

Overall, this is one of the best books I’ve read all year, it’s easily one of my favourite Christmas books, there isn’t a single thing I don’t like about this. The story is so wonderfully intriguing and enchanting, two lead character’s who will make your heart melt, plus an excellent varied support cast, it’s as the title proclaims; magical and I cannot recommend this beautiful book enough.

I will finish as I started; it’s perfect!

A wonderful and magical story that had me swept about with the history and romance and left me just wanting more! There was so much going on in this story and I found myself totally submerged in the lives of the characters - and in Cassie and Stefan you have 2 people who are polar opposites but just have that spark, that neither can explain!

Cassie runs a cleaning business and is one of life's good guys. Always there to help out whoever needs it and a real delight to be around. So when she's given the job of helping to look after a new inhabitant, Stefan, at the local manor house, she expects to receive gratitude and thanks. Stefan really just wants to be left alone so doesn't take too kindly to being 'cared' for - he's been injured abroad and isn't up to socialising much so finds it easier to push people away.

Stefan is a wonderful character to explore - seemingly a loner, you know he's got some history that has scarred him, not only physically, and you wonder if he's ever going to let his guard down and let people in to help him get through the darker times he has. In Cassie, he meets someone who is seemingly a people person! She loves to help and is an invaluable member of the local community. She also has a wonderful bond with her grandfather and their 'jokes' are a real feature of daily life!
As Stefan explores the manor he uncovers some diaries of a soldier who was at the manor in 1917, and this was another intriguing twist on the story - I do love a historical theme in the stories I read, and it all makes more sense when Cassie starts reading letters her grandfather gives her and a new story evolves about about what happened in the past.

Add to the past storyline, there's also a darker element in the present with a number of burglaries taking place which really puts a strain on the villagers as they can't believe someone could take advantage of them in such a way.

I loved Cassie and Stefan and the way their particular storylines played out - they both had to deal with some harrowing situations but found support when needed, and especially with Cassie who had dreams of a different career and finding out that those she thought she could trust were not quite so honest towards her, you just wondered when she'd get her break. It gives a good message throughout of being careful who you trust, with some startling things going on that really added shock value.

Loved it!

This book was simply perfect. It filled me with love and happiness and all things bright and nice.

Cassie owned a cleaning service. At the manor, she met a borrish Stefan. He hadbeen injured and pain made him gruff and rude. Cassue was determined to clean the exterior and bring out the sparkle to his interior. Christmas was approaching, and she had to work her magic fast.

Marie Laval is a wonderful storyteller. Her writing made the characters come alive. I loved Stefan as I understood him. He was damaged, and it was Cassue’s softness which soon won him over. Their opposite nature did lead to some sparks which soon became the flame of attraction and love.

This was not just romance, the author added other subplots to give this story an added depth. There was mystery and magic, fun and cheer, good and bad guys. All that made the story so vibrant. I couldn’t resist the lure of it and read the book at one go.

This was simply brilliant. I loved it.

I got to page 93, chapter 13 and decided this story was not for me, I was wanting more by this time, more of the countryside, more ramblings of walking, more of the lake district. It was too character, orientated for my liking.
So dnfing and not rating, but take a look at the blurb and see if this one suits you.

Do you ever get a feeling about a book like you know you're going to love it before you even open the cover? That you are going to fall in love with the writing and the characters, even though you have never read a book by the author before? Well, this is exactly what happened with Bluebell's Christmas Magic and me. I don't know what made me choose the book, but one look at that cover and I got this warm crazy feeling and it wasn't wrong.

Bluebell's Christmas Magic was an absolute delight to read, that really did remind me of Beauty and the Beast, but without the animated furniture, I love Cassie and Stefan's characters from the beginning. I loved that Stefan acted on his feelings to protect Cassie, even when she seemed too naïve to believe that not everyone has good intentions. I love that this book was set in the Lake District, an area that I have never actually visited, but from the way that the author describes it, it's magical.

For me Bluebell's Christmas Magic was magical, I totally got engrossed in the book from start to finish and was completely enchanted by the author, from her writing style to the plot, it truly is a perfect Christmas read.

A book can be compared to a secret gift. You get a box but you have not the slightest idea what is hidden inside. Opening the book is like opening the box. You can take a peek and slowly start unpacking all the goodies.

What did I find in this parcel?

Snow, because it’s a story that takes place in the festive season to create a winter wonderland.
Love, old and new. Old between friends, between family members. New because two people are finding their way to each other’s heart
Suspense, because there are some fishy characters in town
Laughter, because there are a lot of little hilarious jokes
A happy ending, at least for those who deserved it. Others were less lucky
The author is a born storyteller and even though it’s a big book I finished it in no time. That’s what a good book does to you. It does not leave you alone and keeps on screaming ‘Pick me up and read on’. Me, being a good girl, I listen to its pleads of course ;).

To make a long story short : I really enjoyed it. 5 stars

Thank you, Marie Laval, Choc Lit

If there's one thing that this Ginger Book Geek likes to do, it's discovering new authors. Marie Laval is certainly a new author for me. Judging by how much I enjoyed reading 'Bluebell's Christmas Magic', I can guarantee that I will be reading more of her work in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Bluebell's Christmas Magic' but more about that in a bit.
I couldn't help but take to both Cassie and Stefan from the first moment I met them. They meet when she is hired to take care of Stefan whilst he is staying at his friend's house. Cassie has taken over her mother's cleaning company and she puts her heart and soul into her work. She is certainly persistent as she is determined to do what she was employed to do despite Stefan's attempts to get her to go away. Their first meeting certainly made me chuckle as I imagined Cassie scared out of her wits by this tall, scruffy looking man, who is equally scared of this bubbly and bright woman, who brandishes the feather duster as if it were a weapon. When they first meet Cassie doesn't know too much about Stefan. Stefan is a quiet, brooding, handsome sounding hero but he has been psychologically and physically scarred by an incident that led to a breakdown. He is staying at his friend's house to aid his recovery and allow him to heal away from everybody and everything. He certainly hasn't reckoned on Cassie's persistence. What does the future hold for Stefan and Cassie? Will they get together? Well for the answers to those questions and so much more you are just going to have to read the books for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
It took less than half a page to convince me that this was going to be one hell of a read. I became totally absorbed in the story from start to finish. I immediately took to both characters and I think that because I was so fond of both of them, I just couldn't help but hope for the best. Of course I had to keep reading to see how the story panned out and if my suspicions about what was going to happen were correct or not. Unsurprisingly reading 'Bluebell's Christmas Magic' became a serious addiction and it was an addiction that I didn't want to break. The pages turned increasingly quickly as my desperation to find out what happened grew and grew. All too quickly I reached the end of the story which I was disappointed about. I realise that that sounds negative but I don't mean it that way. I was enjoying the author's writing style, the characters and the storylines so much that I just didn't want the book to end.
'Bluebell's Christmas Magic' is well written. The author has one of those easy going writing styles that is easy to take to and easy to get along with. Reading her writing felt more like I was chatting with a friend rather than reading a book. I hope that makes sense. Marie certainly knows how to get your attention from the start with an early scene which made me chuckle out loud. I am referring to the scene where Cassie and Stefan meet for the first time and both jump out of their skins. I also loved the way in which Cassie wielded a feather duster as a weapon. Even now I am still chuckling away as I imagine Cassie going all kung fu ninja with a feather duster. Marie uses such powerful and realistic descriptions that I really did feel that I was part of the story myself.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Bluebell's Christmas Magic' and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of Marie's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 4* out of 5*.

I don’t know if I’m losing my critical faculties as I grow older – although I’ve always been a fan of Christmas books, this year they’ve been better than they’ve ever been. And for those of you who might look the other way when I enthuse about a book’s Christmasness (ok – that may be a made up word) I’d really hate anyone to miss out on this one – it might be a Christmas read at heart, but it’s SO much more than that, and I loved every minute. In fact, I loved it so much that I sat and devoured it in one glorious gulp, and the decking of the halls had to be put off for a few days longer than I’d intended.

The characters are just wonderful. There’s Cassie, the aspiring interior designer (is there any room that can’t be improved by a strategically placed colourful cushion?) who has taken over the running of her mum’s Bluebell Cleaning business. She’s really good at what she does – and enjoys sharing her joy of life with everyone whose lives she touches, even leaving one of her grandfather’s corny jokes as her calling card.

But she might have something of a challenge on her hands with Stefan – a French helicopter pilot, badly injured in a dramatic overseas incident (and not all his scars are visible), spending time alone at Belthorn Manor in the run up to Christmas. Cassie is being paid to look after him – even if, initially at least, he wishes she’d just leave and never return. But, of course, things don’t stay that way – Cassie’s personality is irresistible, there’s a great deal more depth to Stefan than there appears to be at first, and the developing chemistry between them was something I so enjoyed.

But there’s so much more to the story than whatever might be developing between the two main characters. Cassie’s grandfather seems to be having problems with his memory, causing her some real concern. And then there’s a whole slew of rather less likeable characters – the burglar who causes the finger of suspicion to point in Cassie’s direction, the odd-job man who makes her feel distinctly uncomfortable, the obnoxious local bully, and the man from her past. Even the cat-owning lady over the road becomes a problem she’d rather not have – but the persistent (and fragrant) Fluffy does play a rather key part in unravelling some of the plot.

There are echoes of the past through the discovery of a 1919 diary (an added element I always enjoy), and a really well-handled touch of the supernatural – all against the backdrop of the approach of Christmas, its joyfulness sometimes looking increasingly unlikely, as the Lakes weather continues to do what it always tends to do.

And while we’re talking about backdrop, I really loved the setting of this book – the community of Red Moss, where everyone knows everyone else’s business, then the glimpses of the wildness of nature, the dark tarns, the ruined abbey, the ancient stones.

And then there’s the sheer quality of author’s writing – confident, assured, as deft in the handling of the emotional moments as with the moments of slapstick, and the most wonderful natural touch with dialogue.

If you don’t mind a bit of snow and the brief appearance of an unlikely Father Christmas (and who would?), you could really enjoy this book at any time of the year. I thought it was just wonderful, and I really can’t wait to see what Marie Laval does next.

Although I have read wonderful reviews of Marie Laval's previous books I haven't been able to fit them in. I was determined not to miss out on her Christmas novel and I'm so glad I did because I loved this heart-warming story from the first page till I put it down with a satisfied sigh.

This is the story of Cassie Bell, who lives with her lovely Grandad and runs a cleaning business called Bluebell Cleaning in a village in the beautiful Lake District. As well as her regular cleaning jobs for her old ladies, she cleans holiday homes and has just been hired as a house-keeper for the local big house, Belthorn Manor. The owner's friend, French Army helicopter pilot Stefan Lambert, has come to stay as he recovers from a traumatic incident. Cassie is not too keen to go to Belthorn, a place she finds rather frightening and Stefan is not too keen on being looked after!

From the minute we first met Stefan, I liked him and wondered about this man who described himself as broken in mind as well as body following a helicopter crash. Cassie Bell was also a character I instantly liked and who made me smile as she brandished a feather duster in defence against what could have been a rather burly burglar! Why was she so worried about going to Belthorn? As soon as an author hints at some past mystery, that's me hooked! Marie Lavel's characters are perfectly drawn. Cassie's cheerful enthusiasm about Christmas contrasted with Stefan's dislike of the season. I loved Cassie's relationship with her grandfather too and the way they both cared so deeply for each other.

Marie Laval created a fantastic setting with big old house set in an isolated area. The landscape of the Lake District mountains, the tarns, the abondoned abbey, the sanctuary stone and the silence made it a perfect place to retreat from the world. But the world always finds a way of getting in. Cassie and Stefan find letters and diaries from the past relating to events at Belthorn Manor. These events mirror the present day situation although the past has a tragic ending. I really enjoyed this part of the story which was a little mysterious and spooky and added an extra element of interest to me.

Another aspect of the story was that there were some awful entitled men who Cassie had to to deal with but she didn't allow herself to be pushed around, even though it could mean quite a personal cost for her. She remained true to herself and was a very principled person. I really admired that in her.

I really think it's hard to beat ChocLit authors for beautifully written romance which will pull at the heartstrings. Bluebell's Christmas Magic is a fabulous Christmas romance, in fact, just a wonderful story which could be enjoyed at any time of the year. Cosy up and get ready to enjoy this beautiful love story.

Everybody needs a housekeeping fairy like Cassie!

Cassie Bell has her own cleaning business, Bluebell Cleaning. In Red Moss she cleans with great pleasure houses and adds a little joke to cheer everyone up. Because a smile can lighten up your day.
When she’s hired for the Belthorn Manor, she doesn’t have another option than accepting. She doesn’t like that place at all of what happened a few years ago.

Resident at the moment at the Manor is Stefan Lambert, an injured army helicopter pilot. He’s staying there to recover from his accident, mentally and physically, even if some injuries will never heal.
He just want to stay at the Manor in quiet and peace, and doesn’t need Cassie or her cheerful moods!
But what will happen to the both of them as they are spending more time together?

I didn’t know what to expect from this story, but it was just amazing to read! For me, it was a bit a combination of Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, mixed with some mystery.
Cassie is a ray of light in the darkness of Stefan’s mood, will that be enough to make him also cheerful?
She’s this caring woman, looking after her granddad, but also after her customers. For her, they are so much more than customers.
But when her situation gets messier than ever, is she strong enough to get over them?
And Stefan… you understand where he is coming from… he is still coping with guilt after what happened. And he just knows everybody is suspicious of him because of his scars…
Soon in the story you see that despite his reluctance, he is a man who wants to protect his dear ones. He always want to do the right thing.
During the story he opens up and you realize he’s just amazing!

I loved every bit of it, both reading about Cassie and her family, getting to know Stefan better. I gasped when Cassie her situation was going for the worse, and I hoped the mysteries soon would be uncovered.

Marie wrote an easy story to read, managing perfectly to switch from romance to mystery and even drama!
I quickly found me submerged in the story and wanted to know how it all would end. But on the other side, I didn’t want it to end, because it was such a great story!

Feather dusters at the ready readers

This had me chuckling to myself (on the train I might add) and wasn't at all what I expected.

Cassie is a little bundle of energy and her mission as a professional cleaner is to spread happiness and joy to all her clients. She loves to spread (and spray) a little bit of magic everywhere she goes.

Although, this proves to be more challenging when she has to return to Belthorn Manor - to a place that haunts her.

She has been asked to clean Belthorn Manor as Stefan Lambert is residing there, taking time out and to try and recover from his injuries whilst on tour with the Army.
He is also carrying around a lot of demons and sadness and just wants to be left alone.

As Cassie tries to find the correct key, the door of the Manor is opened and she is greeted by a rude and grumpy man giving her the shock of her life. Her first thought is - BURGLAR ... and so brandishing her weapon (a feather duster) she screams and starts waving it in front of her like a sword.

Turns out the grumpy man is also a bah humbug when it comes to Christmas as well and barely cracks a smile.

Not to be put off, Cassie dusts and hoovers and polishes, cleans and cooks her way into Stefan's life (aka Mr Grumpy) and they both get into a routine of visits.

There are a lot of strange things happening in the town and Cassie finds herself at the centre of malicious gossip. Her world is turned upside down and spun around - and even worse, Stefan seems to believe the ugly rumours being spread - which hurts her even more.

Cassie is a little gem and I would love her energy and enthusiasm (as well as the affectionate and caring man she unexpectedly finds herself falling for).

I don't want to give too much away as this is a lovely book with some unexpected surprises and outcomes.

Happy reading !

Tis the season and I have another fun Christmas romantic comedy for you with lots of laughs, a beautiful setting, and a bit of a mystery.

Cassie Bell is struggling to keep her business, Bluebell Cleaning, running, taking care of her 77-year-old jokester of a granddad, staving off unwanted advances from her lecherous landlord, and rescuing a hard-headed and attractive Frenchmen from himself by giving him a Christmas to remember.

Stefan Lambert came to the Cumbrian village of Red Moss to hide from the memories of his helicopter accident in Mali. All he wanted was some peace and quiet and to forget about Christmas, but a certain cheerful fairy elf with a feather duster kept intruding into his house and his thoughts. Not to mention her recklessness and trusting nature seemed to require his protection from herself.

I was immediately charmed by this book. Its plot was engaging and the winter setting sounds beautiful. Of course, I knew early on who was burglarizing the houses, but I was intrigued to find out how it would be uncovered.

The story was told very well in Cassie and Stefan’s perspectives. I have to say Cassie’s work ethic is incredible and I love her idea of leaving post-it notes with her granddad’s jokes at each house after every cleaning. I am also a fan of Joseph Bell, Cassie’s loving and happy Granddad. She definitely gets her cheerfulness from him.

I loved this sweet and mysterious Christmas story with its interesting characters and fun plot. I read it in a day because I couldn’t put it down. And by the way, this story brings new meaning to how to use a feather duster. 😉

Thank you to Ms. Laval for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

I bloomin' loved this festive treat of a read from Marie Laval; it was adorable and addictive, I also feel like I want to read it all over again to experience the sprinkles of Christmas magic emanating from the pages. Pure delight!
Cassie Bell took over her mum's cleaning business a few years ago and Bluebell Cleaning is particularly busy during the festive season with holiday lets in the Lake District village fully booked. Cassie has also been assigned a late project to cook and care for Stefan Lambert whilst he's recuperating at Belthorn Manor.
Stefan Lambert is a French Army Pilot, during his last exercise he was injured badly, his good friend Charles, the owner of the manor, assured him of plenty of peace and quiet to aid with his recovery. However, Stefan didn't expect a whirlwind of sparkle and cheer that being Cassie Bell to disturb his equilibrium. Cassie wasn't at all perturbed by Stefan's grouchy behaviour in fact it quite suited him with his rugged war-torn looks and gruff voice. She continued to clean and work around him leaving little notes of joy to cheer him up … but was Cassie's sprinkle of magic working on Stefan?
As Cassie and Stefan continue to work alongside each other a sizzling chemistry soon develops but they are both suffering from traumatic events in their past. Can they both learn to face their fears and open up to each other?
With Christmas fast approaching the villagers are looking forward to lots of fun events with Guess the Santa, Comedy Night and a family wedding. However, when the sudden spate of burglaries becomes more widespread fear spreads and suspicion causes animosity between them all.
Bluebell's Christmas Magic is one of those gorgeous, addictive, sexy reads that you just want to devour again and again!

BLUEBELL’S CHRISTMAS MAGIC has a little bit of a whole lot of things that I love about Romance, particularly Christmas Romance. Take one super optimistic, bubbly heroine add one grumpy, growly wounded (both mentally and physically) hero, a definite danger lurking around the edges, a villain(s) skulking around being nasty and with very bad intentions, a crew full of funny, ironic, quirky secondary characters and maybe a ghost mixed liberally with humor, tears, and that pesky unexpected part about falling in love – really, what more could I ask for?

I had such fun with Cassie and Stefan. If you’re in the mood for a story that will make you smile, sigh, and flip pages quickly then you’ll want to check out BLUEBELL’S CHRISTMAS MAGIC. The story is fun, the characters believable and the tensions, in all areas, were strong enough to keep me up later reading than I should have been. This is the first story I’ve read by this author, and I’ll definitely be looking for her backlist.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Choc Lit/ Ruby Fiction. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

I have found that Marie Laval's novels seem to be a satisfying mix of romance and mystery and this one is no exception, with the added spice of a little touch of magic (maybe...). I thoroughly enjoyed Cassie and Stefan's story. They were such a good contrast at the beginning. Stefan is a broken soul who has been through a traumatic experience and is scarred, physically and emotionally. Enter the bustling Cassie with an open- hearted personality and desire to make life better for those she knows. Watching how Stefan reacts to her kindness and her wish to do her best enables you to begin to see what is going on under the surface.

Mixed in with the suspicion and nasty goings-on of some characters, we have some light-hearted touches to add humour. Cassie's grandfather's jokes raise a smile as does the last minute Tarzan themed wedding which Cassie has to design. I also loved the setting of the isolated house where Stefan is hoping to cut himself off from the world. This is a great festive read, full of family and warmth and there are plenty of subplots to keep you interested right to the end.

In short: Beauty and the Beast

I love Marie's writing and although not an out and out fan of Christmas books, I have to say this ticked all the boxes. Cassie was a great heroine. A mixture of warmth and strength, she was so patient in her dealings with Stefan, the French helicopter pilot staying at Belthorn Manor after a bad accident. He was grumpy and resentful of Cassie at first. Her breezy attitude as his cook and cleaner wasn't what he thought he needed. But she was a character who grew on not only him but me as well. Life wasn't straightforward for her either. There was unwanted attention from the local handy man and the manager of Belthorn Estate plus the worry that her grandfather, who she lived with, might be facing major health problems. Added to this, a series of burglaries had fingers pointing in her direction.
Wrapped around this present day story there is also a mystery to solve as both Cassie and Stefan stumbled on a diary and letters which are linked to a post World War One tragedy involving a local girl and her French lover. A lovely story filled with great characters (I loved granddad's cracker jokes) and Christmas warmth. Highly recommended.

Having read and enjoyed two other books by this author I enthusiastically snatched this up as soon as it became available. I wasn't disappointed, Bluebell's Christmas Magic is lighthearted and fun.

Cassie Bell has taken over her Mother's cleaning service and cares for most of the elderly people in her village. Her most recent job at Belthorn Manor is a challenge, acting as housekeeper and generally looking after Stefan Lambert, a French soldier, who's escaping from the horrors of war and requires utter peace and quiet to recover. He doesn't want her in the house, her sunny sense of humour and encouraging Stefan to acquire some Christmas spirit, is driving him mad. He can't persuade her leave as she was employed by the Manor's owner to look after Stefan and she continues to appear every day always ignoring his bad temper. It takes a near tragedy before Stefan begins to relax and realise Cassie could be his Christmas present and future.

An absorbing and intriguing read, recommended.

In this new novel by Marie Laval (the third published by Choc Lit, and I hope there will be many more), an "overly cheerful" cleaner (and aspiring interior designer) meets a injured helicopter pilot who thinks that meeting her is "enough socialising for one day" (and even "No, make that a month"). I immediately liked both of them, as well as Cassie's grandfather with his silly jokes and puns. There are also some much less likeable characters with bad intentions that the reader can often guess long before Cassie, while Stefan suspects more but doesn't always have all the clues. That creates a "when and how will they realise this?" kind of suspense that I enjoyed. And I was particularly interested in the journal from 1919 mirroring Stefan's situation - a little frustrated that we didn't get to read much of it, but still happy with its role in the story and link to Cassie's family history.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A charming Christmas romance, with a cast of interesting characters, some lovely, others are not, a mystery and a something unquantifiably mystical.

Cassie is an optimistic, happy woman, who works hard and goes out of her way to make others feel happier. Meeting Stefan is unexpected and he appears unmoved by her kindness. Hurt at first, until she realises his physical injuries are just the tip of the iceberg, and his emotional damage is far more severe.

A historical family drama seems to reflect Stefan and Cassie's situation. There are a few paranormal interludes and a lovely gentle romance all weaved intricately into this lovely festive tale.

It's hard to put into words the magic of this story, but it keeps you reading, and when it ends, although the conclusion is perfect, you are sad it's finished.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

They say when life throws you lemons, make lemonade, but, how many of us would ? Cassie has a “magical” personality and takes that with her wherever she goes trying to bring a touch of happiness to everyone she interacts with. Unfortunately she is also having to battle the biggest of all monsters, “fear”, followed by the finger pointing blame game. To top it off, one of her clients is battling his own demons and that makes for some strained exchanges.

Bluebell’s Christmas Magic is a page turning read which I devoured quickly and highly recommend to anyone at this special time of year when all of us need a little Christmas Spirit and cheer.

This story is a bit of a take on the Beauty and the Beast. Cassie’s cleaning company has been hired to look after a temporary visitor to Belthorn Manor, a place she is reluctant to be in, but she has to fulfill her obligations, despite the reluctance of the visitor! However, Stefan is drawn in against his wishes, throw in a few villains, some historical background and events, a good resolution, and there you have an enjoyable read (for any time of year really). Sit back, put your feet up, and prepare to be entertained.

This is a modern take on the beauty and the beast story. When Stefan comes to Cassie's town to recover from an horrific helicopter accident alone he is met by a good fairy in the guise of Cassie. As Christmas approaches she is determined to help Stefan despite the difficulties and problems that keep cropping up. A good romance with a Christmas setting. OK, I could have guessed the end but the route was very winding and made this a good book to curl up with beside the fire, perhaps even with your own Stefan by your side.

I loved this book from start to finish. A bubbly heroine and a wounded hero - can they get past their fears and history to actually find love? Supported by a great cast of characters from local villagers, to a loving family and from some shady guys to a possible ghost! A wonderful story, highly recommend!

Not too bad

This was ruined by the silly unfunny jokes. Why did the author think they would enhance the story. Shame really

If I could give it 0 I would.
The least Christmasy book ever literally is only mentioned in the final chapter.

Contemporary romance at its best with twists and turns in the development of the characters.
A captivating story with well intertwined events. Marie never fails to make her characters interesting and I didn't want the story to end as in previous titles written by her. Her writing is just so imaginative!!!
