Olrik consegue capturar Mortimer após uma perseguição tenaz. Antes de ser detido, o cientista esconde os planos do ambicionado avião-foguete de combate. Apesar das ameaças e pressões, o herói resiste a revelar o que sabe. O capitão Blake consegue infiltrar Nasir, um sargento do Makran Levy Corps, na prisão de alta segurança onde foi colocado Mortimer e passar-lhe instruções no sentido de fingir que colabora com Olrik. O cientista convence os seus carcereiros que perdeu os planos do projecto, mas que está disposto a reconstituí-lo – ganha assim um preciso tempo para que Blake organize a evasão. Mortimer fornece falsas informações enquanto tenta comunicar aos amigos o local onde está escondido o projecto. Basam Damdu é que não está disposto a esperar mais e Mortimer começa a ficar em perigo. Nasir avisa Blake de que a libertação do cientista, tal como a recuperação do plano perdido, se tornou uma questão de vida ou morte...

Edgar Pierre Jacobs naît le 30 mars 1904 à Bruxelles. Il se passionne très tôt pour le dessin et la musique. Après avoir exercé quelques petits métiers, il travaille dans la publicité. Parallèlement, à partir de 1921, il devient figurant au Théâtre Royal de la monnaie à Bruxelles. Le 25 août 1922, le futur chanteur d'opéra signe son premier contrat d'artiste aux cotés de Mistinguett pour la Grande Revue du Casino de Paris. Le 29 août 1929, le baryton reçoit le premier grand prix de chant. Il sera engagé juste après, comme artiste lyrique, à l'opéra de Lille.
En 1940, il doit abandonner la scène, à cause de la seconde guerre mondiale, chose qu'il regrettera toute sa vie. Le "baryton du neuvième art" allait dès lors s'illustrer dans des travaux graphiques alimentaires (publicité, catalogues, presse) qui le mèneraient à d'autres "planches", celles de la Bande Dessinée, dérisoires à ses yeux, qui pourtant lui assureraient une gloire de diva.
En 1941, il entre au journal "Bravo". Après quelques illustrations pour divers contes, nouvelles et romans, il se voit confier, en 1942, la reprise de "Flash Gordon", cette saga américaine dessinée par Alex Raymond ne parvenant plus en Belgique. Il s'en acquitte avec bonheur mais la censure allemande interdit la série quelques semaines plus tard.
En 1943, Jacobs élabore une nouvelle bande dessinée de science-fiction intitulée "Le Rayon U". Jusqu'en juillet 1946, il collabore à "Bravo". Entre-temps, il fait la connaissance d'Hergé. Ce dernier lui confie, à partir de 1944, la mise en couleur et les décors de ses albums. Il entreprend des corrections, des remises au format et les coloriages de "Tintin au Congo", de "Tintin en Amérique", du "Sceptre d'Ottokar" et du "Lotus Bleu". Il travaille également sur le "Trésor de Rackham le Rouge", les "Sept Boules de Cristal" et le "Temple du Soleil". Cette collaboration liera les deux hommes d'une profonde (et rivale) amitié qui culmine au lendemain de la guerre lorsque Jacobs n'hésite pas à jouer du gourdin pour défendre Hergé contre les épurateurs d'une autre espèce de "collaboration".
En septembre 1946, Hergé invite son compère à participer au lancement du journal "Tintin". Le 26 septembre de cette année-là, dans un numéro 1 aujourd'hui recherché comme une pièce de trésor, paraît la première page du "Secret de l'Espadon". L'aventure de nos trois immortels héros : Blake (inspiré par son grand ami Jacques Laudy), Mortimer (inspiré par son autre grand ami Jacques Van Melkebeke) et Olrik (inspiré de Jacobs lui-même) commence. Ce dernier, colonel et gangster à monocle, est l'incombustible prince du mal que combattent deux chevaliers de l'ordre historique et scientifique : l'émérite capitaine d'aviation Francis Percy Blake, chef du "MI5", blond et flegmatique Gallois, et son "good old fellow", le professeur Philip Edgar Angus Mortimer, bouillant barbu rouquin (né aux Indes), spécialiste de physique nucléaire tout autant que de biologie moléculaire.
En 1947, Jacobs abandonne sa collaboration avec Hergé et se consacre dès lors de manière quasi-exclusive à sa propre série où il fait vivre de multiples et périlleuses aventures à ses very British Héros. It says something about my disappointment with Part 1 that it took me several months before I dug into Part 2. I actually reread Part 1 again just to refresh my memory. (Not that reading a 60-page comic takes that long.) Where Part 1 is almost entirely a chase across the globe, Part 2 does start to bring in some intrigue. The subtitle of this volume is "Mortimer's Escape," and that's pretty much what this one is about. Mortimer is captured and made to reproduce his plans for the "Swordfish," the secret weapon that the world's nations intend to use against their conquerors.
Although Part 2 is better than Part 1, these early volumes of Blake and Mortimer are still pretty rough. The emphasis is more on ACTION! than on character development or clever plotting, so the result feels like one of those big, dumb summer blockbuster movies. But it can certainly be enjoyed on that level.

Bon Dieu! I decided to experiment with 'Part 2' and go with the French edition despite not being able to read French.... because I had thought that 'Part 1' relied too heavily on the text to explain what was happening in the pictures.
The idea being to see whether I could satisfactorily follow the story well enough to enjoy it without any idea of what was in the text.
Obviously this meant that I missed any of the humour in the banter between characters but there were a few gags I couldn't miss... like Blake's disguise and of course Chinese Hitler (I didn't say they were funny gags). There's nothing subtle about this first Blake and Mortimer comic and it was pretty easy to work out the gist of the events.
However, I think too much text is probably better overall than not enough text, at least for this comic... if it had been planned to be textless or minimal text the frames would probably have necessarily had a humour of their own.
I think I followed the story well, but perhaps not well enough to enjoy it as much as I'd hoped for. I did pull my English copy out after I finished to double check a few panels and what I missed didn't seem to change the story.
I like our insider, Nasir. He's always in the right place and cunning enough to pick up the slightest clue. Colonel Olrik on the other hand could be duped by Mortimer's half-assed charade into wasting time on a goose chase.
I'm enjoying the adventure for what it is but I am also pretty ready for this story to finally reveal l'Espadon (The Swordfish) to us. Apart from the title it has barely made it into the script so far.
Anyway that was a crazy experiment, not highly recommended. I may try a Dutch edition for 'Part 3'... I know about 5 words in French but I have about a dozen Dutch words in my vocabulary and hopefully the majority of what I don't know will be closely related to German so that I can decipher it. Fingers crossed.

It's pretty good at building up the tension of the escape from the Empire. The notion of an organized army using the full extent of their reach to try to kill you is very well captured.

This album continues the story begun in the first album,
The Secret of the Swordfish, Part 1: The Incredible Chase
, and Blake and Mortimer struggles to make their escape to the secret base, carrying the secret plans for the Swordfish (as yet unrevealed) and trying to avoid capture by Olrik and the forces of the Yellow Empire.
There are still issues with text heavy speech balloons, but there appears to be some overall improvement, suggesting that Jacobs was learning the full craft of comics creating as he was ploughing ahead.

Better that the first volume. Not so many in your face English-decline-of-the-empire arrogance.
The drawings are still top notch. The intrigue is set right and the teasing on what could be the Swordfish gains strength, taking the reader easily to the next volume.

A parte l'abitudine di introdurre il volume con spoiler pazzeschi, per il resto è una figata pazzesca. I colori sono stupendi, i disegni anche, i dialoghi lunghissimi ma anche molto interessanti (a parte il testo minuscolo) e la trama non ha niente da invidiare a un thriller. Consigliato.

November 8, 2024بلیک و مورتیمر برخلاف سلفهای مشهورتر بلژیکی-فرانسوی طراحی بانمک و غراقآمیز ندارد و شاید همین هم برگ برندۀ آن باشد. قصه خیلی جدی است و پر از ارجاعات مختلف به جنگ سرد و کشورهای مختلف دارد. حتی لوکیشنهای واقعی هم در کتاب وجود دارد اتفاقاً بخشی از همین کتاب در ایران میگذرد. قصه خیلی هیجانانگیز است و به اندازۀ سه جلد کشش دارد. برخلاف کمیکهای دیگر قصه در چند روز یا چند ساعت اتفاق نمیافتد و زمان نقش مهمی در ماجرا داشت. البته که اتفاقات شانسی که قهرمانان را هم نجات بدهم در قصه زیاد است. یکهو وسط بیابان نجات پیدا میکنند.
به جز بالنهای دیالوگ، با مستطیلهایی هم طرف هستیم که انگار راوی ماجرا را تعریف میکند و این بخش خوشایند نبود چون تصویر به اندازۀ کافی گویا است. برخی صفحهها تک فریم هستند و یکهو دیدن چنین فریمی خیلی جالب است. اینکه قصه شبیه آدمهای واقعی است ماجرا را جذابتر میکند و البته اینکه در انگلستان میگذرد و آنها قهرمان هستند تکراری است و شاید به چشم امروزی مسخره. قصه سه جلد ادامه پیدا میکند و شبیه فیلمهای بیگپروداکشن است. دریا، صحرا، شهر، آسمان و همهجا قصه وجود دارد. شخصیتها انگار ویژگی خاصی ندارند و شاید ویژگیهای خفنتر آنها را بعداً کشف کنیم و البته نباید از شخصیت منفی هم گذشت که واقعاً هوشمند و جذاب است.

Het tweede deel van de reeks.
Het verhaal gaat iets meer richting intrige en een beetje actie dan echt avontuur zoals deel 1. De verdere ontwikkeling van de personages is een goeie zet.
Het tekenwerk blijft eerder ruw, maar is klassiek. De grote tekeningen blijven een leuke toevoeging.

Godam ! L'épisode central de cette trilogie laisse à nouveau nos protagonistes sur le point d'être pris par les forces impériales jaunes. Encore un autre cliffhanger pour la série !

Un deuxième tome qui oppose au grand spectacle du premier une action bien plus resserée, un thème beaucoup plus près du sol avec la détention de Mortimer.

The subtitle "Mortimer's Escape" is a good description, revealing both that Mortimer is captured in this album and that he subsequently escapes.
