Knowing about an author gives you incredible context to their writing.

A central moment in New Doc in Maple Ridge is the main character, Ed, refusing an unethical demand from Tony Malto, a local gangster who tries to bully the doctor. We can safely assume that physician "Ed" is a stand-in for the physician-writer Bob Bell.

The irony - if you know Bob Bell - is that in his personal life he is a typical uncaring, unethical surgeon who will do whatever it takes to get ahead. And he has been very successful at this.

While President and CEO of the University Health Network his staff was responsible for multiple offences of criminal negligence that he helped cover up. Nurses would spend hours of time on facebook in the ICU neglecting patients, security guards would spend hours watching porn in view of the public - while getting paid by taxpayers, personal health information was misplaced, lost, or stolen without any investigations. The hospital was a complete mess.

I find it fitting that Dr Bell has decided to write a fairytale book about an ethical Doctor - as if in his old age he thinks making up a nice story can undo years of pushing his boot down on top of the face of Canadians he was supposed to be serving as both CEO of UHN and then Deputy Minister of Health and Long Term Care in Ontario from 2014-2018.

If you are not already aware: Long Term Care in Canada is a disaster and thousands of needless deaths during COVID were due to mismanagement - mismanagement that began under Dr. Bell's "leadership".

I would advise against purchasing this book for any reason other than to read between the lines and see the manipulative attempt Bob Bell has made to cast himself in a favourable light. It is garbage, literary garbage, just like the person who wrote it.

I truly hope we see an end to this kind of self-published trash by old white men trying to rewrite their history.
