Wolf Country

Rate this book
A lot can happen in a remote cabin in a beautiful wilderness, with only one bed.
Laney thinks she's only doing a good deed when she rescues a wolf caught in an illegal trap—until the wolf transforms into a beautiful naked woman in her arms!
Sheltered Dasha grew up in an isolated werewolf pack under the rule of a strict alpha, but she immediately recognizes her rescuer as her mate. Now Laney is nursing her back to health in her isolated cabin in the gorgeous Alaskan wilderness, while the two women dance around the magnetic attraction drawing them together.
In Dasha's sparkling eyes and beautiful smile, Laney might have found the piece she's been missing—if she can learn to let someone else in, after years of being alone. And Dasha has always taken her cues from her pack ... but when mate bond and pack bond collide, she has to trust her own heart and instincts to tell her what's right.
With Dasha's pack determined to separate them and a dangerous, armed poacher on the loose, Laney and Dasha must decide what they want and fight for what's theirs, in a remote winter wilderness where the greatest unexplored country is the wilds of a human heart.
An HEA lesbian werewolf romance, with sizzling sex and true love conquering all, set in the sweeping scenery of Alaska's wild backcountry.

A nice solid shifter romance set in Alaska. Kindle Unlimited.

Laney is struggling with a degenerative eye condition while trying to maintain her independence alone out in the middle of nowhere, Alaska. When she comes upon a wolf snared in an illegal trap, she stops to help the creature who suddenly shifts into a beautiful woman, and back again!

Care and romance ensues.

Dasha is the wolf-shifter, from an isolated pack nearby - and is anxious to find out about the wider world and learn more beyond her parents narrow-minded views.

But danger is around in the form of illegal poaching, and traps being set that could expose the secret of Dasha's kind, and her family pack.

It's all fairly standard, but it's well written and I enjoyed my afternoon reading it. I wish it could have been a bit longer, and we could have spent more time with Dasha and Laney as a couple. The epilogue we get is nice, for sure. Lovely HEA.

4 🌟- well written paranormal romance

I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing in this wolf shifter romance. The characters are all very interesting, one of the MCs has some vision issues that become very important during exciting climax of the story. This was excellent and available on Kindle Unlimited. Highly recommend if you are looking for a quick paranormal read. Low angst but some exciting action/drama.

0.25 ⭐️

There’s a loooooot of problems with this book but i will highlight a few

Firstly it seems like the MC can change from human to wolf and the other way around faster than Lighting and she change back and forth, back and forth every 2 seconds and I mean that literally:

“She shifted, and pain blazed up in her leg, along with the shocking bitter cold of being naked and human with the temperature far below zero. But the pain overwhelmed all of it. Dasha screamed aloud and shifted back to a wolf on pure instinct. She lay trembling in the snow.”

In one chapter only she shifted back and forth around 6 times!!!!!!!

Second: she meet the other MC and immediately that’s my mate even though she was leaving isolated with her pack and they doesn’t have any kind of technology, the other MCs fall in love with her immediately as well

Thirdly: the pack? They doesn’t believe in mating between human and werewolf and when someone does they say to them your mistaken and doesn’t what true mate mean and they have to leave the pack because it’s hard to live with people who doesn’t believe them
The alphas of the pack is the parents of one of the MCs and the control her life and doesn’t allow her to see the rest of the world (so she doesn’t know anything about it), and when she meet her “Mate” :

“Dashenka, you're still young. You haven't had much experience of the world—"
Dasha pulled her hand away. "That's hardly my fault.”

Also they try to force to get back with them, the alphas have some kind of power to control their pack to do what they want ☺️.
Aren’t pack and specially the alphas suppose to support each other no matter what?

And finally the writing style? Children in kindergartens I’m sure can write much better

There’s more problem of course but i won’t frustrate myself more by writing them

That’s it, thank you for wasting my time, next

There's a pride month series that I was excited to read, that I had ordered six or so books from, all by authors I have loved reading, so, naturally . . . I read two short stories by an author I had not read before. heh. Loved both short stories (I think the first was around 77 pages, while this one was around 148 pages).

First story I read by this author involved two shifters. A moose & A wolf. This short story involves a wolf & a human.

A human woman with an eye issue (loosing vision, very difficult to see at night) is driving around on a snowmobile in Alaska. Gets turned around, partly because it is hard for her to see, partly because it is not that hard to get lost in Alaska in snow. She hears what sounds like a wolf howling and or a dog whining in pain. She investigates. Would never have been nearby but for getting lost. Finds a wolf (that she thinks is a dog, or possibly a hybrid) that has one leg in a trap. A trap on her own land (apparently, even though she is lost, she knows it's her own land?). She moves closer, tells the dog what she is going to do, and the dog seems to understand her. Begins freeing dog, naked woman, dog . . . .. Is it her eyes? Was the dog briefly a naked woman? Regardless of reality or eye sight issues, she needs to help the dog, and so pulls dog onto snow-mobile. Drives back to her cabin. Whereupon, as it turns out, the dog is not a dog but a wolf, and not a wolf but a werewolf.

A cute story with a bit of thrilling action tossed in involving Laney the human, and Dasha the werewolf.

This was quite well done - the nature, the feeling of being in snow. Enough was there for me to pick up the scent of snow, of biting cold, hear the snowmobile, the howling wolves. A very enjoyable book for me.

I just felt very ‘meh’ about it.

Firstly the writing is fairly solid to be fair, my issues were more so with the story and plot.

The two were cute but I just didn’t feel like there was this chemistry there needed for a soulmate bond, or any bond at all really. It was kind of forced almost, emotionally… and I don’t know, the general pairing just felt off. I’m unsure if it’s because the dialogue felt forced or if they just didn’t feel like they worked together.

Secondly there was a lot of plot holes:

Firstly with the consistency of Laney’s sight. She’s disabled (which is awesome to see more disability rep, it’s one of the reasons I continued reading.) With sight issues leaving her partially blind in good lighting , but she is almost completely blind in dark/night lighting. However it felt like sometimes in the dark she was doing wild things when she just stated she couldn’t see much of anything (like with the wolf’s shining eyes etc) and then with the ending (no spoilers but… how?)

Then we had the plot of the person leaving traps which again no spoilers but it felt so incredibly dramatic and also, again, there was some issues and discrepancies from the beginning to the end.

This one just wasn’t for me I guess.

Mc’s are both WLW (sapphic) and the main relationship is WLW. There is disability rep also (Laney has a sight disability)

TW’s listed below please skip if you don’t want vague spoilers:

Tw//CW// attempted drowning, illegal trapping, harmed animal, sex, mild gore, guns, threat of violence, violence, vague misogyny.

She would always feel that compass needle in her head, dragging her back.

3.5 stars. Really freaking cute! A paranormal romance set in Alaska, involving an injured werewolf who gets stuck in a trap, and the semi-loner woman who finds and rescues her. This had a decent amount of world-building for something so short, and I loved the vibes. Cold weather, isolated setting/atmosphere, some survival-ish aspects, a bit of action. The romance was super sweet; a case of fated mates that I really liked. The author didn't just dump the fact that they were fated into our laps and leave it there; the chemistry between them was still cultivated. This ended up being sweet, but pretty steamy. <3 Some great disability rep too: Laney has an eye disease that is slowly eroding her vision. She's legally blind in darkness, and that makes for some harrowing situations. I wasn't totally in love with the reasoning of the villain (because there didn't seem to be any) but the plot was still enjoyable.

I'll def check out this author again!

I got this as a quick read (For me) on Kindle Unlimited. I first want to say, for a quick read, this was a very nice read. Where it fell short for me, was the emotion behind it all. There was something about this that left me feeling lacking in the relationship between Laney and Dasha. Let me be clear, the relationship was there! The emotion behind it though feels like it fell short. I'll explain because that may seem confusing. While you're reading, there is a wonderful story and beautiful emotion unfurling between the two. The difference is, it feels like you're reading the story from the outside, less like you can transport yourself into being one of the main characters. More like you're a ghost standing beside the couple as they live their lives. For some people, that could be completely okay and love that type of read! I just prefer such an indepth read that I feel like one of the characters, not a ghost. This is not me saying that the author DID NOT write an amazing story! She did! There is just something missing from it for me! I repeat (basically): Wonderful story, not it for me.

P.s. I have a note for my smut lovers. In the description it says, "with sizzling sex". I will admit, I a lot of the time look for books with a reference (In description, reviews, tags, etc) to there being good "sizzling sex". So when I saw this, I immediately though, "Ah, a direct statement!". Maybe this is me being on Ao3 and Wattpad for 7 years, but....There is one scene between the two and I believe two of them by themselves. The one between the two is very clipped and lack luster. The same could be said about them being by themselves. THAT IS FINE! Books don't NEED smut. But, this being in the description just feels untrue. I would not have called it "sizzling" and the wording being "with sizzling sex" makes it seem like there are many multiple scenes, specifically with them being together. And there are not. It is there! Just do not expect an Ao3 standard.

I love snuggling my two wolf plush when reading wolf-shifter romance, and they’re perfect for this book. I’m very enjoying this one. Although there are lots of things that didn’t add up in there, but I’m willing to overlook it! Dasha and Laney make a cute couple, and I love how Dasha is kind of like a submissive wolf when she’s around Laney. It will make a perfect weekend read😃

Laney is a painter living in a remote part of Alaska. She rescues a wolf that's been caught in an illegal trap on her land, and is startled but not displeased when said wolf shapeshifts into a very sexy lady called Dasha who says Laney is her destined mate.

The 'destined mate' trope usually removes the tension too quickly to feel satisfying for me, and I think that's true again here. However if you don't mind that, then Dasha and Laney have a sweet love at first sight romance. I also really liked the descriptions of the freezing landscape and how they survive in this unforgiving land, that all felt very tactile and real.

Dasha's traditional werewolf family and Laney's chronic health issues are the more convincing speed bumps to their happy ending. Less convincing to me was the villain character, who seems to exist only as a plot device.

I received this ARC for free with no obligation to review.

Wonderful atmospheric short story

The only negative i can think of is the cover image, which is OK. (Beautiful cover images attract more readers, some of whom are difficult to satisfy. )

In Laney and Dasha, the story has two convincing protagonists that really work well together, and all the other characters are charming and I found them easy to relate to, evoking people I have known. I found myself wishing for a longer story, but realizing that that would have diluted the action too much. Making Laney have a vision impairment was a brilliant stroke. I have known people like Laney, stunningly handicapped, but stubbornly determined! A lot of thought has gone into this story, and leaves us hungry for more. (Having created such a delightful world, the temptation to squeeze out another story in it must be strong; give in once more!)

Even before I knew that the author had grown up in rural Alaska, I could tell by how the book was written. So many good descriptions of Laney's cabin life, the nature surrounding her, and the wildlife litter this story, but that's about where my praises end. I think this work could have been a great way to present a wonderful puppy love story (pun intended) between a blissfully ignorant, sheltered werewolf with dreams of doing more than what life with her pack had to offer, and a lonely artist struggling with her impending vision loss, capturing all she can before she potentially loses it forever. Unfortunately, it fell short of what it certainly could have been.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed this read, but I find myself wanting to see what it could have been if it was longer and if a bit more care had gone into the crafting of the story, not just the setting.

Honestly? Not enough

This was such a nice reading, because of the length we don't get to dip too deep into the intricacies of the shape shifters or the main characters, but it didn't take away the experience, of watching the MC coming along, the thrill of some events. It makes you happy, but wanting more.

So I loved it! So much so that I think there should be more, about the couple, the pack. I want to be witness of Dasha shifting(pun intended) into the woman we got the idea she can be. And also how Laney's thing may or may not interfere in her/their life. I'm just curious about them.

p.s.: I think the blurb makes things sound way harsher than they actually are.

This is one of those super fluffy while still be adorably entertaining shifter fictions. There is a bit of action 3/4 of the way through, but a very sweet epilogue is a welcomed treat. The two mains living in the frozen tundra of Alaska- you just knew the environment would become a main character at some point and when it does, grab your blankets and some hot cocoa because bbrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! I like a shifter/human mate pairing and enjoyed them discovering each other. Very sweet. Very short read, but worth it for the Kodak moments.

It was sweet and well-written, and especially after the halfway mark I liked it a lot. Loved the details about life in Alaska, you can really tell the author is from there and it's lovely.

I was just left with a lot of...indifference to the main romance? I wasn't sure what made them tick as a couple. Also, so many things I love about shifter romance were absent here, which was kinda underwhelming. A fated mate trope that doesn't have that much scent stuff or lust or any passion is sad to me, which I guess may say more about me than the book.

This was one of those subgenres that I sort of knew existed, but didn't realise exactly how big it is. Picked up the story out of curiosity, and found that I really enjoyed the story. Wolf Country is short and sweet shifter tale, the premise and setting suiting the tale and well written. It had me engaged the entire way through, and hoping the best for the characters, even with the issues that they had and the issues that they faced. Definitely gets a recommendation.

I love werewolf and vampire wlw books but during the whole story we hear about her wanting to leave and go to college. So is it HEA??? The whole story was kind of sad because you have one that's going blind you have another one that's a werewolf and wanting to go to college and see the real world and her girlfriend is a recluse so it's kind of sad and depressing but then again they have a happy ending but is it really all that happy???

Wolf Country

Mar Delaney has created delightful characters in Laney and Dasha. Reading how Dasha's wolf immediately recognized Lahey as her mate was great, especially with Lahey not being afraid of Dasha in wolf form. It was also nice for Laney to fall in love at first sight with Dasha. This book is a fun read.

Very sweet and thoughtful

This story isn't typical of shifter romance, it's got some of the same elements but it's far softer and more pensive than most I've read.
If you're a fan of the genre it's quite refreshing.
I enjoyed it, and I really liked having a main character with a disability that doesn't just get fixed by her supernatural love interest.

Just a sweet, short romance with one terrifying chase scene.

I've also never read a book before about someone having retinitis pigmentosa. Afterwards I googled it and learned a bit about a truly terrifying disease. In this book though, it truly leads to one of the sweetest endings i've read in a while.

I recommend :)

I’d been missing reading some shifter books when I came across this title and had to read it. So much for doing any chores today. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. Both main characters were likable but also flawed in some way, although their situations were different than the usual. The chemistry, the situations and the hint of mystery kept me reading.

3 stars. I thought the romance between Laney and Dasha was super freakin’ adorable. It’s insta love but I don’t mind when it comes to paranormal and mating type of stuff. They were great together. There was some action at the end that was fun as well. This was a quick and entertaining enough read. I liked it!

True love

Well written story of true and fated love

Laney a loner losing her eyesight living in the wilderness saves what she thinks is a dog from an illegal snare

What happens next is a love story found in fairy tales but you wish would happen to you... Ya know minus all the attempted murder and stuff

Good but too short paranormal romance

A little too short I feel it could of gone on and explored the rest of the werewolf family rather than only one couple.Other than that I enjoyed it .there is an HEA.

Lovely

Exactly as advertised, cute little very well written novella, little bit of supernatural, little bit of sweet love, characters could be more developed I guess but that's hard in the novella format, very enjoyable and I highly recommend :)

Great book

I loved this book. It proved that that even though they didn't know each other they helped each other out when they were in trouble. I loved how they felt a connection as soon as they met and it was wonderful how everything worked out.

First FF Shifter Book

This is my very first FF shifter book. It is a short and light read, not as hot and steamy as their MM counterparts. It could use a bit more romance but overall an enjoyable read.

Thank you for writing this story!

Wonderful writing of a wolf shifter and a human and saving the human when the wolf's parents said it was passing phase. They believed each other and their motivation of standing firm when the human was in danger. Enjoy!
