I feel like I binge read one of most exciting cooking shows which made me rooting for amazing characters ( instead of Vanilla Joe) there is great mouth watering ethnic food combinations ( especially I got so interested in Appalachian food that I never tried and so intrigued to taste sooner), representation of diverse characters and when you add a forbidden- sweet love story of chefs into the equation, this book turns into delicious feast you never want to miss!

I enjoy Sadie’s sarcastic, hilarious narration, the way of her character’s evolving by getting rid of her insecurities, finding her own way. And Luke sharing the same name with Emily in Paris’ sexy chef was also kind, genuine from the beginning. I loved his dream to tribute to his ancestors’ traditional dishes in near future.

This book was truly educational for foodies like me, introducing so many amazing dishes and also realistically criticizing the mansplaining at the food industry ( women are cooks and men are mostly chefs which is the irritating fact! )

Conclusion of the book was also extra sweet. I felt lighthearted and kept giggling for a long time as soon as I finished it.

I am giving great introduction to ethnic food, feelgood, delicious, heartwarming four stars!

Special thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.

"My life has this irritating habit of throwing its biggest changes at me while I'm completely in the nude."

If you love:

✔️ Complex, non-stereotypical Jewish representation (according to my Jewish friends I have discussed with. Full disclosure: I am not Jewish)
✔️ Quirky, hilarious heroine who is unafraid to speak her mind
✔️ Cooking competitions! All of the delicious food! Unique culinary combinations that I would love to try!
✔️ A very light romance attached to contemporary fiction

Then this book is for you! A must read for those looking for a feel good, comforting story.

*Many thanks to the publisher for providing our review copies.

There are not enough words for me to properly express just how much I loved this book and Sadie Brooke Rosen. Amanda Elliot, this book is stellar & deserves all the accolades. First, this is some of the best Jewish representation I’ve seen as of late - Sadie is a chef competing on a cooking show a la Top Chef and her dream has always been to own her own restaurant where she can serve Jewish cuisine. This book details exactly l how Jewish food is not just bagels and lox and how being uprooted has influenced Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine over the years and I loved watching that play out through Sadie’s journey.

There are other interactions in the book (no spoilers here) where other contestants are confused about how Sadie can cook Jewish cuisine and not be Kosher - as a non Kosher Jew myself, I’ve certainly been questioned on why I’m not eating Kosher or the like. It goes without saying (or it should), there is no one way to be Jewish and it’s always a joy to see someone who observes similarly to you reflected on the page - unfortunately, there is not a ton of Jewish representation in fiction outside of WWII (it continues to increase but it’s still small) so reading a book like this is truly special.

All of this before I even get to the love aspect of the story and just how much I loved Luke … Sadie’s half Korean, fellow culinary loving love interest. Sadie on a Plate releases in March and is a must read - I truly hope those less familiar with Jewish culture and cuisine will also check this out to learn more as well.

Thank you to Berkley Romance for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.

There was… barely any romance here. If I knew that going in I probably could’ve adjusted my expectations. This is very much just focused on the cooking competition, which is fine, but I needed more from the romance and main characters.

✨Your ticket to flavortown is revoked.✨

The vibes we wanted:

The vibes we got:

And now I'm like:

**Spoilers below for who Luke turns out to be since the summary isn’t clear.**

I think I’d like this to be reworked as a women’s fic with an extra emphasis on the competition. I’m not normally one for disrupter chapters that are articles or blog posts, but I think including transcripts of the confessionals here would’ve been super fun. It could’ve added an extra layer to interactions and even pining from Luke and Sadie. Sadie was a good narrator (it’s entirely from her POV), but I ultimately wanted a little more in terms of perspective. I enjoyed the cooking competition way more than the “romance.”

Branding this as a romance and not letting the audience know in the summary that he’s a judge…just didn’t work at all for me. I knew from others it wasn’t a romance and my expectations were altered because of it, so I was able to enjoy the first half of the ride. But I’m assuming not everyone had that benefit. Luke has absolutely zero appeal to me. He’s wishy washy, flat, and we spent like 1% of the book with him and Sadie actually talking to each other. It simply doesn’t work.

He’s a judge, she’s a contestant, they literally cannot be next to each other out of competition times. How is that supposed to work?? And they also played SO fast and loose with those cameras like sweet grilled cheesus be CAREFUL. Sadie was pretty dense and he was pretty flimsy. How are they supposed make any memorable connection in this book? She doesn’t even have a way to communicate with him outside of competition times. I’m confused. I also hated how he was also a mentor of another competitor???? The competition was a farce.

On another note. I HATE that he’s a judge and she’s a contestant. Can you imagine if you found out a judge and contestant started dating after a competition??? I’d flip a major tit. As a viewer and a contestant. Yeah it’s juicy but good god at what cost. He literally helped her cook during the MOTHERFUCKIN COMPETITION.

That’s way past anything I can accept in a book that revolves so heavily around her cooking abilities. I was ONLY invested in the competition because this is straight up not a romance and I didn’t care about the romance. If I’m not angry that there isn’t steam a romance has done something severely wrong in my book. Sadie was not a competitor. She couldn’t *cook* under pressure and I was convinced she was a good cook but lord she stresses me out.

I was never really a fan of Luke. Besides barely knowing him, he let his father sway his vote as judge and that was so WIMPY. He’s compromised his ethics multiple times and way too fucking many for me.

Overall, I didn’t like either Sadie or Luke by the end because they were so frivolous with their SECRET relationship. Like good god make one good decision. PLEASE. I simply couldn’t respect them. I was only invested in the competition and the integrity of the competition failed me irreconcilably. She should’ve owned up to the meal she cooked her motherfuckin self and left the goddamn show in disgrace. The contestants weren’t even told they just got to COVER IT UP.

If they could’ve just not touched each other during the whole competition and just had crazy, pining eye sex then I could’ve handled the murky ethics. But this took it TOOHOO far. It completely brushed over how big of a scandal this actually was. But even then, in what world is this a romance? Completely half-baked. They respected nobody on that show and I can’t respect them. Unhappy! I’m gonna go eat some fancy Irish cheese and forget about all of this.

⭐️⭐️.25*/5 🌶**/5

*The first half of this book was 4⭐️s and then it all burned down.

**Okay the closed doorness of that was so pathetic why couldn’t there just be nothing??? This was so wishy washy 🤢 what have I said before? Ah yes, sex in an epilogue is a GARNISH not the whole ass meal. Ya just can’t do that and expect me to be satisfied. It was barely even a scene it was two lines lmao.

- Judge/judge works. Contestant/contestant works. Contestant/producer I’ll allow it. Contestant/camera person sounds hot. Judge/producer sure. Judge/camera person absolutely. Makeup person/ contestant yes. Makeup person/ judge yup. Judge/ host yeah buddy. Host/ contestant yeeehaw. BUT JUDGE/CONTESTANT ABSOLUTELY THE FUCK NOT.

- Another spoiler but also CW: And Derek just never suffered at all? Revenge porn didn’t tank his career?? The Derek plot-line was severely undercooked and was done a disservice.

- #teambaldjoe

- Spoiler: She didn’t deserve to get to the final four I said what I said

- On why I’m so salty over the ethics: Feels kinda like when I think about student/prof romances I'm like wow
hot and then I read it and hate it (yes I have a very specific example). This also just feels wrong. When things like this happen in contemporary romance (bc I can more easily see myself in the scenarios) I have a hard time not viewing some things from an ethics standpoint or how it would make me feel if the situation happened to or around me. It's a big reason Funny You Should Ask flopped so hard for me. Obviously this doesn’t happen all the time with me, as liking both characters goes a long way in placating my wild wild heart.

Sadie on a Plate is a debut novel that takes place on the set of a cooking show. I had so much fun reading this book and following Sadie's journey through not just cooking and finding love, but finding herself.

After being unfairly fired from her restaurant job, Seattle chef Sadie gets called to be on the biggest cooking reality show, Chef Supreme. Going into this competition, Sadie has a lot to prove. But so do the other eleven contestants there. On the flight to NYC, she meets a guy she really likes. Sadie's life is about to get even more interesting and complicated.

I used to be obsessed with watching Top Chef so this was the book for me! I loved seeing all the cooking challenges and watching all the dishes the chefs came up with. This book is described as a rom-com, and even though there were funny parts and some romance, I see it more as a contemporary romance, lighter on the romance and heavier on Sadie's journey.

This book was a pleasure to listen to and I can't wait to check out more from this author!

Thank you so much to Berkley and Netgalley for providing an e-arc of this. All thoughts and opinions are still my own.

I just want to start off by saying that this low rating isn't because this book was BAD. It just wasn't the book I was expecting and I didn't particularly enjoy my time reading it. This rating is based purely on my own personal enjoyment... or lack there of 😬

This book pitches itself as a rom-com. And this DOES have an HEA. But you'd be hard pressed to convince me that this book is a romance. Because there is no actual romantic development in here. In fact the main characters barely speak beyond the first and final couple of chapters.

Instead, this book is mostly a play by play of the cooking competition. Which is exactly why I'm so picky about this trope. I personally don't enjoy cooking shows and I enjoy them even less in book form. While it's a fun backdrop for a romance, I found the show itself to be far too in depth. We had scene after descriptive scene of Sadie brainstorming, cooking, judging, reflecting, repeat. And after a while I just started skipping entire paragraphs because I didn't care about each individual recipe she made of the show. I was in it for the romance.

And in the end, there just really wasn't one. Yes they have their HEA but why do they like each other? Where was the connection? The build up? Instead they meet for an hour, we get endless scenes of cooking, and we jump a year in the future and bam, they're in love.

It just wasn't at all what I was looking for and found myself disappointed and bored for the majority of this book.

I cannot even describe how much fun I had with this - how much I enjoyed this delectable audio! All I wanted to do was listen!

Do you enjoy cooking competition shows? I do. Lately, my favorite is Next Level Chef. I just love the concept and how that one plays out. This audio takes our delectable scrumptious romantic pairing to the fictitious set of Chef Supreme - where Sadie, trying to elevate Ashkenazi Jewish Cooking, competes to save a life that was flailing. And manages to unwittingly fall for a Judge on the show. Sparks fly! What a total edge of your seat pleasure where the dishes are as mouth watering as the romance! I just loved it. Sorry to see it end. Brava Amanda Elliot!

Sadie on a Plate is the author's debut adult novel. It is a fun romantic comedy that has amazing Jewish representation.

I am Jewish and am the biggest Top Chef fan around. So this book could not have been more perfect for me.

Sadie is a 27 year old Jewish chef living in Seattle. She is such an amazing heroine. I absolutely adored her.

The story focuses a lot on a Top Chef type competition. And I was obsessed with absolutely everything about this part of the story.

Sadie's cooking style is Jewish cuisine with a twist. And I thought that this was incredible. The Jewish representation in this book was amazing.

The book is so funny. But due to the circumstances the romance aspect is not the main focus of the book. However I still loved everything about it.

I have not enjoyed a book this much in a while. And I absolutely cannot wait to read the author's next Berkley Romance book titled Best Served Hot, coming out in 2023.

i’m happy to announce that i’m joining a blog tour for sadie on a plate! this book is very charming and i really enjoyed reading it 🍽

i’ve always been a fan of cooking shows and that made me love this book even more! it combines a competitive setting and blossoming romance in the best way possible and i loved the descriptions of the food that the contestants were making!

sadie, our main character, has just been fired from her job, but receives a phone call asking her to compete on her favorite tv show, chef supreme. i loved sadie as a character and her sense of humor throughout. it was fun getting to see her interact with the other contestants and become better friends with some of them. i LOVED her friendship with kaitlyn and her romance with luke.

one of my favorite parts of this book was learning more about sadie’s ancestry and how she drew inspiration from traditional jewish dishes. it was nice getting to learn more about her in this way and made me feel more connected to her and her desire to win the competition. i’m also glad that, while this was a romance novel, the romance didn’t overpower the competition and her career goals.

it was also nice getting to see luke grow throughout! i’m really happy with where things ended up for all of the characters and i think this is the perfect light and sweet book for fans of romance, cooking shows, and food!

thank you once again berkley for providing me with an early copy of this book and i highly recommend it 👩‍🍳

This was a sweet and savory story (pun intended).

I really enjoyed watching Sadie’s progression through the competition, and how she slowly developed more self-esteem in her chef abilities.

It was fun to progress through the competition with the characters and see all the challenges. I loved how Sadie incorporated her background by bringing Jewish food to the forefront. It was lovely getting that Jewish rep in a different way.

The little bit of romance was nice. It wasn’t the focus of this story but I enjoyed it none the less.

Overall a fun book and I really enjoyed and would definitely recommend.

A heads up for romance lovers, don't go into this book thinking it's a traditional romance. It's very light in the romance department. The focus is more on Sadie and the cooking competition.

[Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group and NetGalley for my gifted e-ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions reflected are my own]

Synopsis:
Sadie is a Chef on the rise in the Seattle scene, making a name for herself by creating delicious Jewish-inspired recipes, with her own special twist. She is currently unemployed and feeling down, when she gets a call from a show that is *most definitely not* Top Chef to join this season's contestants. On her flight out to the show, she ends up sitting next to another Chef, who may or may not also be competing. They both skirt around the topic and even watch a few episodes of "Chef Supreme" together during the flight. The kitchen isn't the only thing heating up... but what is this mysterious stranger's true identity? I devoured this romance in single sitting, and was left hungry for more Amanda Elliot!

Review:
This book is tasty, delicious fun! I loved all of the recipe ideas, it definitely makes you hungry as you read! If you are an aspiring chef or home chef, you'll love all the foodie mentions - however, it inspired me to want to go out to a fancy restaurant (not much of a cook). The romance is sweet and a tad spicy, and there are a few surprises around each corner - which I thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn't overly predictable, and was so much fun!

Tropes:

Thank you to Berkley + NetGalley for this advance reader’s copy to read and review and the chance to be on the blog tour — 4.5 stars from me for this delightfully swoony romance set during a cooking competition!

_____

"We're not trying to feed people food," I said. "We're trying to feed them feelings."

I have read MANY a foodie title lately, but this one ended up being a favorite, it was just such a sweet romance with a fun meet cute and the focus on a food competition. I was instantly wrapped into the story as Sadie + Luke met and discovered they would be working on the show together, it was an element of the cooking show trope that I hadn't read before and just loved.

Sadie's backstory and the drama she is forced to face even on the how was one of my favorite pieces of her growth, and I really enjoyed the display of the restaurant and food industry as a whole in this one. For me this book was much more than just a cooking competition, full of hearty emotion and exposing yourself in a relationship, how we open up to one another.

"Being Chef Supreme is more than just being able to follow a recipe. It's about cooking from your heart to someone else's heart. It's about being vulnerable, and putting who you are, all you've got, on the plate, but ultimately it should be as much about the other person as it is about you."

I really, really loved this debut romcom between Sadie, a reality tv cooking competition contestant and Luc, one of the judges. Sadie is Jewish and wants to open her own restaurant featuring Jewish inspired foods. She meets Luc on the plane to NYC where the two really hit it off not realizing he's going to be a judge on the show.

What follows is soooo many amazing recipes, lots of new friendships and a slow burn, forbidden romance between two foodies. My only critiques were that it was closed door and a tad predictable at times but all in all none of those things really made me love it any less.

Perfect for fans of Master Chef or books like Love and other disasters and great on audio narrated by Emily Lawrence. Much thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Romance for my advance review copy in exchange for an honest review. Available now, you definitely want to add this one to your TBR!!

3/5 💫 Many thanks to Berkley Romance for the e-ARC in exchange of an honest review.
You know what? I am sad with that rating too. I went into this book thinking it would be a romance. I was so disappointed when I realized that romance was a sub-plot of the book. Trust me, I like books with all kinds of plotlines. Romance is not a precondition for me enjoying a book, but when a book has been marketed as a romance, and then it turns out that isn't - I will ofcourse, be sad. 😭

Let's talk about the good things, shall we? Sadie on a Plate was really easy to get into. I was hooked from the very first line - the starting was *chef's kiss* 💕 I loved how funny Sadie was and how she could make any situation hilarious with her witty dialogue. Her passion for cooking was infectious. I was so proud of how hard she worked for her dreams. Her chemistry with Luke was amazing too ~ even though we didn't get to see a lot of it since the romance got sidetracked because of the cooking competition plot.

I loved the descriptions of the items that Sadie cooked, and the processes that involved in a cooking challenge. I especially loved how the author gave us a behind-the-scenes peek to reality cooking shows. It was very entertaining, and I loved seeing the dynamic between Sadie and her participants.

Here's the thing, if you like reading about food and recipes, this book will definitely be your best friend. I do love reading about food, but if it's talked about for a major part of the story, I will get bored. And that's what happened with Sadie on a Plate. I loved the cooking competition theme a lot, but I skimmed through a lot of pages that contained information about how Sadie prepared food. It's a "me" thing, obviously. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I really wanted to see more of Luke and Sadie's romance 😭 They were so perfect together, they deserved more screentime 😭 I also wanted to see more of Kaitlyn and Sadie's interactions, as their friendship bloomed throughout the story.

The last few chapters were quite phenomal though! I was not expecting the twist at all, so that was a pleasant surprise! I loved how the book was wrapped up. The ending was really satisfactory. 💕

Overall, Sadie on a Plate was a fun read with a lot of relatable moments! If you're a fan of cooking shows, you should definitely pick this one up!

A Jewish chef cooking Jewish foods on a cooking competition show? I was predisposed to love this book, but even if I hadn't been, I would have been won over. Following along with Sadie on her journey to cooking stardom and self-discovery/self-acceptance was a delight. Her rapport with Luke was lovely to watch grow (and Luke, although not a POV character, had a great arc of his own). And the pacing and supporting characters made this impossible to put down. A sweet (and savory) romance that I devoured too quickly!

Sadie on a Plate will not win any book awards. However, I really appreciated and enjoyed the book. It's so hard to find a Jewish-centered book that isn't about World War II or isn't full of stereotypes. I love food competition reality shows and I really felt invested in this part of the story. The book definitely focuses on the competition, Sadie's personal growth and how food impacts our culture. The romance takes a back seat and, honestly, it was almost a distraction. By the way, I read this book during Passover and felt the need to make matza brei after Sadie cooks it in the book.

Although I loved the cooking competition plot and spunky heroine, I’m confused why this is marketed as a romance. The romance was so light! I’d say this is more regular fiction than a typical romance novel.

For that reason I was disappointed. I think the competition was fun and interesting but it was definitely the main story vs the very rare instances of chemistry with the love interest.

I wanted to love it so much.

Beautiful book! Such an endearing main character and just so interesting to read start to end. If you’re a Top Chef/Food Network competition fan, this book needs to get in your hands.

In my opinion, this book isn’t a romance 🤭 the covers a bit deceiving, the description even more so. It’s so backseat, closed door I just don’t think it makes sense in the romance category.

Pick this up if you want a women’s fiction empowerment read that explores Jewish cuisine and culture!

Well, well, well. I freakin loved this book! First of all, I had to have a snack on hand at all times while reading because the food in it sounded too delicious and I was jealous. AND the Jewish food representation?? YES. Although I could still do without the gefilte fish. Everything reminded me of top chef with a light romance. FAIR WARNING: I genuinely wouldn’t consider this a romance. I didn’t mind it at all, but it’s very light on the romance part. It mainly focuses on Sadie during the Chef Supreme show with her crush on Luke. Also, this book was so suspenseful for me because I just needed to know what was going to happen with Sadie on the show. Anyway, highly recommend if you love food network and wanna know more about Jewish food!!

After a brutal break up with her former boss, Sadie Rosen is trying to re-create her career as a chef. She’s stunned and thrilled to be offered a spot on a successful cooking reality TV show, Chef Supreme. If she can win the top prize, it could jump start her career and maybe even get her a restaurant of her very own.

Sadie lives in Seattle but she has no problem getting on the next plane to New York for the TV show. She immediately hits it off with the man sitting next to her, Luke Weston. Unfortunately, due to the TV show’s rules, she cannot have any outside contact for the six weeks the show will be filming. Not the best way to start a new relationship, but she hopes he will wait for her.

When she arrives on the set for her first day on the show, she’s more than surprised to learn who Luke really is. She vows to solely concentrate on the competition but it’s very hard to ignore Luke.

This is women’s fiction at its finest. Often in these types of books, I want to shake the main character because she does ridiculous things. That’s not Sadie. She knows what she wants and knows what she needs to do to get it. She’s not overpowering. I found her to be delightful, sweet and a little vulnerable.

The sparks fly whenever Luke and Sadie are alone. The entire cast of characters, are well developed and come to life. It’s a quirky group, but each one has their own personality. I wouldn’t mind some sequels involving several other members of the supporting cast.

This story is a fun and delicious ride. It’s one of those “feel good” type of books that I didn’t want to end. I enjoyed my time with Sadie and her friends and I hope I get another chance to visit with them again.

Warning: This book could be dangerous to your diet. There were so many delicious-sounding foods being prepared by these amazing contestants. I could practically taste each dish.

"We're not trying to feed people food," I said. "We're trying to feed them feelings."

Your blood will be sparking just reading about all the food in Sadie on a Plate! *insert drooling emoji*. I LOVE food shows and I love romcoms; however, the story fell a little flat for me. Luke and Sadie are adorable. I was salivating for MORE from this OTP! Sadie on a Plate is perfect for foodies! Fans of Top Chef will devour Amanda Elliot's debut romantic comedy. Heavy on the com!

Ok if you are a Top Chef fan this one is a must, it felt exactly like binge watching an entire season of the show! I mean to a tee, you follow Sadie from beginning of the show all the way until the end and it’s just as exciting and tense as watching episodes, maybe even a bit more fun actually. The food descriptions alone were to die for so make sure you have plenty of snacks handy when you start this, you’ll definitely be hungry and the Jewish flair Sadie brought to each and every plate was so so fun! I’m no expert on Jewish cuisine at all but reading about Sadie’s modern takes on old classics made me drool and had me wishing she was a real life friend so she could cook for me. Despite my love of the food angle I also really liked Sadie as a character as well, she was funny and quirky and easy to root for. My small and tiny complaint is that I wanted more romance, I get Luke and Sadie had to hide their feelings for each other but I definitely was hoping for some more of that aspect. But overall a super fun read that was a love letter to Top Chef!
