Yaongyi began drawing at a young age, and dreamed of becoming a comic creator as a child. She had brief interests in other career paths, calling them "flings" in her interview with LINE Webtoon, but always returned to art. She worked a handful of jobs before eventually creating True Beauty. Her real name is Kim Na-young and she was born on April 24, 1991. Many fans were impressed with her looks following her face reveal one year after 0rue Beauty's debut, stating that "an angel is drawing an angel".
𓂃 𓈒𓏸 The key to appreciating this is ignoring everything minus the romance (ᵕ—ᴗ—) good thing I’m the queen of ignorance-on-demand, teehee (≖⩊≖)
Because, ladies and gentlemen… this is how you do a love triangle ~
I cannot remember the last time I felt this level of tension.
Cannot remember the last time a love triangle was an actual love triangle and not a straight line with two points. Two equally strong contenders for love interests? In this economy? *le demure gasp*
Thank you for making me grin like a goof all day long, cuz DAMN YOU, SUHO!
And damn you too, Seojun don’t think I forgot about you being sinfully attractive every page, you bitch!
P.S. I hope the next volumes keep focusing on the romance like in this one, because it’s frankly godawful at handling everything else
I love this series. I watched the show before the webtoon was turned into books and I like the fact that the show followed the books almost exactly. I do still picture the actors who played the characters when I'm reading the books. The artwork is great and the fact that you can see the changes in facial reactions on each characters is amazing. I like that you get a visual even in the books of what it's like for females who feel like they are ugly unless they wear makeup.
I do feel bad for the main character though because her mom doesn't seem to treat her as well as she treats her brother and sister. I guess it's the middle child curse people talk about.
I know how the storyline goes and I can't wait for the next volume to come out so I can read it and see if there are any differences between it and the show.
Jugyeong and Suho are on a date to watch The Evil Dead and play games together in an arcade ?! My heart can’t take it lol 🥹 and he obviously prefers the way she looks without makeup, which will help her self confidence so much, as she only feels beautiful when she is wearing it !!
The “prettiest” and most popular girl at school, Sujin, doesn’t like how close Jugyeong and Suho are getting. She wants Suho all for herself so befriends Jugyeong and sets her up with her friend, Wooheyon. But he’s a total player and she doesn’t even know it yet. Will these two get in the way of Jugyeong and Suho evidently burgeoning feelings towards one another?
This is definitely becoming my comfort series atm 💖 a fun 4 star read! I’m starting to get as addicted to Manwha as I am to Manga 😅 the art style is gorgeous and the story is getting deeper and darker at some points for some characters in their personal lives.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of True Beauty Volume Two by Yaongyi. I really enjoyed this volume; there was some mystery and a lot of plot twists added! I like that the message of the story is changing and developing into being more self aware about what ‘True Beauty’ is and how it’s about much more than just looks. I will definitely be continuing with this graphic novel!
Jugyeong bounces between utter embarrassment/happiness and humiliation in this next volume. But maybe if she can overcome her sketchy Mother she could have a career path lined up ..
Although not quite as cohesive in its plot as the first volume, this second continues to point out the cruelty of pretty privilege, something it excels at. While our heroine is more comfortable with her dual selves - and doesn't hesitate to go out without makeup on occasion - others are caught up in the trap she's still at least a little stuck in. More interesting is the way that we start to get a look at how boys also suffer from the same thing, as the idea of boy bands is introduced and forms a throughline in the book. Add to this one absolutely horrible and abusive mother and the series can be hard to read at times...though I think it'll be worth it in the end.
Yaongyi did it again! This volume was just as hilarious as the first volume but somehow the drama is even juicier!!
There is a love triangle beginning to form (womp womp) but I still enjoyed it. Also Seojun? Whew. I know I should root for Suho but Seojun is so fine and so bad!! I can’t help liking him!
In this volume, Yaongyi adds depth to characters from previous volumes. I wasn’t ready to start feeling sympathy for Sujin! Bruh. Just when I thought I had her all figured out.
Jugyeong is so sweet and easy to root for. Her budding friendship with Gowoon was the highlight of this volume. The way Gowoon opened up to Jugyeong about being bullied really moved me. That whole scene really struck a chord with me.
In my review for volume 1, I hoped for a more in depth discussion of lookism and outward appearance. Vol. 2 lays the ground work nicely!
The abrupt ending was murder. Cannot wait for volume 3!
Thank you NetGalley and Wattpad Webtoon Book Group for providing me an eARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Okay, after reading the final episodes, I feel much more interested in where this series is going!
I felt pretty lost much of this volume and not sure if it's because of the bouncing around between different people Jugyeong was interacting with or not. She got a boyfriend and then lost a boyfriend, hung out with her friends, met a new guy who's pretty grumpy, and then having study sessions with Suho but suddenly got a job? It felt pretty rushed and jumpy, BUT!
I LOVED the last few episodes quite a bit! I felt things settled down and was 100% cheering for our main girl in pursuing her new dream! She didn't say it was her "dream" necessarily, but after her realizing what she would like to do, it makes me wonder why she didn't think of pursuing that already. (It didn't even cross my mind either and like how?! LOL!) I hope that goal/dream will play a much larger role in the next volume as well as the new young woman she meets. I really liked her!
Also Suho! I continue to really love his character! He didn't have nearly as much page time as the last volume which was a bummer, but he never fails to make an impact when he's on page! I absolutely loved loved loved the last scene he and Jugyeong have because is that a signal the ship could be sailing soon?!
I think the biggest surprise was how heavy the language was. I was super caught off guard by the amount of F-bombs and other language, which was personally jolting for me. I was glad it toned down as the volume progressed.
Overall, I was super unsure if I would keep up with this series after reading about half of volume two, but I'm genuinely interested in reading the third volume with that ending! Jugyeong continues to have some of the funniest expressions and liked her questioning about "lookism." Hoping we see a few of the new faces we met in this one and seeing her dream unfold!
*I received an e-ARC from the publisher. All thoughts expressed are my own.)*
