When Christina Van Pelt is let go from her teaching position, she feels lost and rejected. Teaching meant everything to her, and without it, she wonders if she truly has a purpose. A letter from a family friend inviting her to come teach in Denver brings her to life again and she eagerly agrees to make the trip, but when she arrives, she finds that the plans have gone horribly awry.
John Hall has been teaching in the Denver schoolhouse for five years while also trying to see to the needs of his aging mother. Complications with her health have been a worry to him, as well as his seeming inability to connect with this year's students. Hearing that a new teacher has arrived in town just adds another layer to his burden—he can't lose his job because there's no one else to take care of his mother.
Meeting Miss Van Pelt turns John's entire world on its ear, and soon they realize that what they seek the most can best be found when they look toward each other.
Christina's Crusade is a wholesome historical romance appropriate for all ages and is the fourth book in the Broad Street Boarding House series.
Amelia C. Adams is a wife, a mother, and a novelist. She spends her days dreaming up stories and her nights writing them down. Her biggest hero is her husband, and you might just see bits and pieces of him as you read her novels.
She loves all things historical and enjoys learning about days gone by, but she's glad she was born more recently (she won't say how recently or not recently) because the Internet is awesome, and she's glad she doesn't have to wash her clothes by hand in a galvanized tub. She has hit Amazon bestseller status twice, once for A Clean Slate and once for A Clear Hope.
I enjoyed the start of this new series, The Broad Street Boarding House. The first book will revolve around Christina Van Pelt, a schoolteacher from North Carolina that had been asked by Mrs. Powers to come to Denver to help educate children of the miners. When Christina arrives in Denver, she learns the Powers have left for California, and she is directed to the boarding house that only houses ladies. The owners are the spinster Cartwright sisters, Sophia and Sybil. The story is a historical-based mystery, suspense, with a sweet, clean romance.
Christina Van Pelt had been a school teacher in North Carolina, but then the school board gave her job to a man, leaving her without students. Christina is an educated and opinionated woman, something that many men do not appreciate. But, she doesn't see that changing—it seems to be the problem of men and their egos, not her. Her mother's friend, Agnes Powers, comes up with a workable solution, requesting Christina to come to Denver and teach children of the miners—what a shock to arrive and find out that Mrs. Powers and her husband left and went to California. Will she have to return to North Carolina? What will her future hold?
"Her deeply held convictions bled through into everything she did. If being married meant giving up her opinions, she'd accept her fate as a spinster as cheerfully as she could."
"She’d always thought that when she moved out of her parent's house, she’d be getting married and creating a home of her own. Her life had taken her down a different road, so it was time for her to determine a new destination.”
John Hall has been the schoolmaster for the last five years in Denver. He loves his job, but for some reason, this year seems more complicated than the past several years. Not only is he responsible for a classroom, he has the worries of his mother and her failing eyesight. The one thing he hasn’t had time for is romance or to find a wife. What a shock when John hears of a new schoolteacher—has the school board decided to replace him without warning?
Mrs. Hall: The one you’ve been waiting for is finally here. John: I didn’t realize I was waiting for someone, Mother. Mrs. Hall: You might not have realized it, but you were.
The story’s plot will have Christina confronting her father about leaving North Carolina and moving to Denver, Colorado, to teach children. He tells her that they will discuss it and he will give her an answer the next day. What a shock when her parents agreed to her request and even helped fund supplies for her new endeavor. But, has her dreams been dashed before they even have a chance to come to fruition? The Powers have left, and a note left at the hotel tells her to go to Broad Street Boarding House to stay. Now, Christina must make new decisions, should she return home as soon as she can get a train back, or attempt to do what she came here for, to teach.
Christina: Miss Sophia, thank you so much. I don’t know what I would have done…” Sophia: We don’t need to worry about the what-ifs. You’re here, you’re safe, and now you may rest. We’ll work out the details later. Everything is well in hand.
When John Hall hears about a female schoolteacher from North Carolina, he is upset, confused, and feels he needs answers. What a shock to learn that she isn’t here to take away his job—she is here to teach the miners’ children—at their convenience at the mining camp. Now, why didn’t he think of that himself?
“You appear to be a woman of great sense and a good heart—I believe you’ll choose to stay, but if you feel you must go, I’d like to move forward with the idea in your absence. I’m rather ashamed that my entire focus was on bringing the children to the schoolhouse and that I never investigated bringing the school to the children instead. You’ve opened my eyes, and now I can’t see anything else.”
The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people. Christina and John are both dedicated to seeing that everyone has a chance to learn, including the adults. Another female border that joins them at the boarding house finds herself kicked out by her father, her fiancé calling off the wedding, all because another man made a false accusation. With the support of all the ladies, she will take a stand against her father, remain at the boarding house, and even find a job in town. The situation at the mining camp is sad; even the children are forced to work in the mines, the women are overwhelmed with cooking, laundry, and watching small children, so will anyone have time to learn?
“It’s all fine and good to have dreams, Miss Christina, but you’ve got to look at reality too.”
Best of all, two people find each other—two people so well matched, they both have a love for education and teaching—and yes, God brings them together. I love the sweet romance that develops between John and Christina—they are both smitten with one another from their first meeting. It doesn’t take long for them to acknowledge their feelings and find their happiness.
“In love? Oh, I don’t know, but the seeds for it have definitely been planted, and with some encouragement, I’m sure they’ll bloom.”
This is a sweet and heartwarming story with outstanding characters. This is Christina Van Pelt and John Hall's story, and the character development is outstanding. Christina is disappointed when she arrives in Denver to supposedly take a teaching job only to learn the job is no longer available. The sisters of the Broad Street Boarding House are only to happen to take her under their wing and introduce her around town. When Christina meets John, she learns he is actually the teacher, and John is very taken with Christina. The couple work together to teach the miners' children and the sparks begin to fly between them. Will their relationship become a HEA? Be sure and read this great story to find out. I know you will enjoy it.
The Van Pelt family is an unusual one for this era. Christina has a passion for teaching and is eager to go west to teach miners’ children. Then there are her parents who are willing to let her do this, okay, they did have their limits. It was so good to be able to visit with Miss Sophie, Miss Sybil and Mary again. As always Amelia C. Adams has given us a story with wonderful characters and a story line that will touch your heart.
Wonderful story in which literacy is brought to the forefront. Christina is invited to Denver to teach the underprivileged to read. But upon arrival her sponsor has moved on and the local teacher thinks she is there to take his position. But once set straight and seeing how lovely she is, he is on board her plan to stay and let the plan grow.
A fun clean romance that made me smile and laugh. The Cartwright sisters, some new friends and some real life challenges make this book hard to put down until the end!! Grab it, a favorite beverage and enjoy an afternoon delight.
I am loving this series. This book is well written and the characters have a great depth. Very good plot and it keeps you reading from chapter 1 though to the end. I enjoy meeting new people and love the interactions of the sisters with the new people each book...
A sweet refreshing love story. Catherine and John both found a love they didn't know they were looking for by doing something that they both love, teaching. They found a community.
Christina is a courageous young lady who speaks her mind much to the chagrin of her family ...
Christina is excited for a new adventure teaching miners children and she runs into a few bumps along the way but she picks herself up and pushes forward.
This is a very sweet romantic story. Christina lost her teaching position and was lost because she felt teaching was her life's destiny. John, himself a teacher, was determined to help her achieve her desire.
Christina's Crusade was an amazing story! I really enjoyed all of the new characters we've met and I look forward to more instalments in this series! 💗
I enjoyed reading John and Christina's , it was fun, sweet and awesome. Everyone wanted to help with the school and it finally worked. Thanks Amelia C. Adams.
Choosing a path is the easy part. The hard part is following it. Coming to teach with no contacts or students created the challenge and this couple meets it.
I listened to this one on audio. The narrator did a great job bringing it to life. This book is short and sweet but packed with a great story and fantastic characters.
John- a teacher in Colorado Christine- a teacher from NC going to Colorado to help miners read and write. I enjoyed reading this engaging story that is well written with charismatic characters. Their story has a loving HEA!!
